I-65 South Split Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement, Tommy E. Nantung Mar 2014

I-65 South Split Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement, Tommy E. Nantung

Purdue Road School

Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is constructed with reinforcing steel placed in along the entire length of the pavement. CRCP forms tight transverse cracks to evenly transfer loads without the need of contraction joints. The result is a continuous, smooth-riding pavement surface capable of accommodating heavy traffic loads in a severe environmental condition. First constructed in Indiana more than 75 years ago on US-50, CRCP became popular with the construction of the Interstate Highway system in the 1960s and 1970s. Many sections of interstate and non-interstate highways constructed at that time are still in service today, having outperformed their original …

Kitchen Table Meetings: Applying The Golden Rule To Property Owner Outreach, David N. Goffinet, David Pluckebaum

Purdue Road School

Property impacts are unavoidable with most road construction. Rather than the owner’s first experience being a drilling rig pull up in their drive-way, the kitchen table meeting process takes a proactive approach to sitting down in the “safety and comfort” of their home, upfront to discuss the type and timing of activities that will occur during design, property acquisition and construction— reducing the “unknown” in this multi-year process that happens too fast for some and too slowly for others. Learn how this approach has not only resulted in increased project acceptance and perception, but also in valuable knowledge that can …

Security Of Graph Data: Hashing Schemes And Definitions, Muhammad U. Arshad, Ashish Kundu, Elisa Bertino, Krishna Madhavan, Arif Ghafoor

Cyber Center Publications

Use of graph-structured data models is on the rise - in graph databases, in representing biological and healthcare data as well as geographical data. In order to secure graph-structured data, and develop cryptographically secure schemes for graph databases, it is essential to formally define and develop suitable collision resistant one-way hashing schemes and show them they are efficient. The widely used Merkle hash technique is not suitable as it is, because graphs may be directed acyclic ones or cyclic ones. In this paper, we are addressing this problem. Our contributions are: (1) define the practical and formal security model of …

Corrosion of metal in biomedical devices could cause serious health problems to patients. Currently ceramics coating materials used in metal implants can reduce corrosion to some extent with limitations. Here we proposed graphene as a biocompatible protective film for metal potentially for biomedical application. We confirmed graphene effectively inhibits Cu surface from corrosion in different biological aqueous environments. Results from cell viability tests suggested that graphene greatly eliminates the toxicity of Cu by inhibiting corrosion and reducing the concentration of Cu2+ ions produced. We demonstrated that additional thiol derivatives assembled on graphene coated Cu surface can prominently enhance durability of …

Sub-Diffraction Laser Synthesis Of Silicon Nanowires, James I. Mitchell, Nan Zhou, Woongsik Nam, Luis M. Traverso, Xianfan Xu Jan 2014

Sub-Diffraction Laser Synthesis Of Silicon Nanowires, James I. Mitchell, Nan Zhou, Woongsik Nam, Luis M. Traverso, Xianfan Xu

Birck and NCN Publications

We demonstrate synthesis of silicon nanowires of tens of nanometers via laser induced chemical vapor deposition. These nanowires with diameters as small as 60 nm are produced by the interference between incident laser radiation and surface scattered radiation within a diffraction limited spot, which causes spatially confined, periodic heating needed for high resolution chemical vapor deposition. By controlling the intensity and polarization direction of the incident radiation, multiple parallel nanowires can be simultaneously synthesized. The nanowires are produced on a dielectric substrate with controlled diameter, length, orientation, and the possibility of in-situ doping, and therefore are ready for device fabrication. …

Integrating Non-Planar Metamaterials With Magnetic Absorbing Materials To Yield Ultra-Broadband Microwave Hybrid Absorbers, Wei Li, Tianlong Wu, Wei Wang, Jianguo Guan, Pengcheng Zhai

Birck and NCN Publications

Broadening the bandwidth of electromagnetic wave absorbers has greatly challenged material scientists. Here, we propose a two-layer hybrid absorber consisting of a non-planar metamaterial (MM) and a magnetic microwave absorbing material (MAM). The non-planar MM using magnetic MAMs instead of dielectric substrates shows good low frequency absorption and low reflection across a broad spectrum. Benefiting from this and the high frequency strong absorption of the MAM layer, the lightweight hybrid absorber exhibits 90% absorptivity over the whole 2-18 GHz range. Our result reveals a promising and flexible method to greatly extend or control the absorption bandwidth of absorbers. (C) 2014 …

Jamming Rheology Of Model Cementitious Suspensions Composed Of Comb-Polymer Stabilized Magnesium Oxide Particles, Lisa R. Murray, Kendra Erk Jan 2014

Jamming Rheology Of Model Cementitious Suspensions Composed Of Comb-Polymer Stabilized Magnesium Oxide Particles, Lisa R. Murray, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The colloidal microstructure of concentrated suspensions containing anionic comb- polymer-stabilized magnesium oxide (MgO) particles in water was analyzed by shear rheometry for indications of changes in particle microstructure based on particle size and comb-polymer usage. As the suspensions were sheared at different rates, jamming in the sheared MgO suspensions was observed as shear stress overshoots. The shear-induced evolution of the suspension’s microstructure was strongly related to the perceived interactions between neighboring MgO particles in the suspension. In the jammed state, interactions are believed to be enhanced by the formation of entanglements between opposing comb-polymer side-chains. Steric repulsion between side-chains was …

A Method For Clustering High-Dimensional Data Using 1d Random Projections, Sangchun Han Jan 2014

A Method For Clustering High-Dimensional Data Using 1d Random Projections, Sangchun Han

Open Access Dissertations

Clustering high-dimensional data is more difficult than clustering low-dimensional data. The problem is twofold. First, there is an efficiency problem related to the data size, which increases with the dimensionality. Second, there is an effectiveness problem related to the fact that the mere existence of clusters in sample sets of high dimensions is questionable, as empirical samples hardly tend to cluster together in a meaningful fashion. The current approach to addressing this issue is to seek clusters in embedded subspaces of the original space. However, as dimensionality increases, a naive exhaustive search among all subspaces becomes exponentially more complex, which …

Nanoparticles For Multimodal In Vivo Imaging In Nanomedicine, Jaehong Key, James F. Leary Jan 2014

Nanoparticles For Multimodal In Vivo Imaging In Nanomedicine, Jaehong Key, James F. Leary

Birck and NCN Publications

While nanoparticles are usually designed for targeted drug delivery, they can also simultaneously provide diagnostic information by a variety of in vivo imaging methods. These diagnostic capabilities make use of specific properties of nanoparticle core materials. Near-infrared fluorescent probes provide optical detection of cells targeted by real-time nanoparticle-distribution studies within the organ compartments of live, anesthetized animals. By combining different imaging modalities, we can start with deep-body imaging by magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography, and by using optical imaging, get down to the resolution required for real-time fluorescence-guided surgery.

Non-Faradaic Impedance Characterization Of An Evaporating Droplet For Microfluidic And Biosensing Applications, Piyush Dak, Aida Ebrahimi, Muhammad A. Alam Jan 2014

Non-Faradaic Impedance Characterization Of An Evaporating Droplet For Microfluidic And Biosensing Applications, Piyush Dak, Aida Ebrahimi, Muhammad A. Alam

Birck and NCN Publications

We have developed a general numerical/analytical theory of non-faradaic impedance of an evaporating droplet, and validated the model by experiments involving droplets of various analyte concentrations deposited on a surface defined by coplanar electrodes. The impedance of the droplet Z(n(0),t,f) is analyzed as a function of the concentration (n(0)) of the ions in the solution, the measurement frequency (f) and the evaporation time (t). We illustrate the versatility of the model by determining the sensitivity enhancement alpha(t) of the droplet-based impedimetric nano-biosensor under different regimes of operation. The model should have broad applications in the characterization/optimization of droplet-based systems, especially …

Prediction Of Spectral Phonon Mean Free Path And Thermal Conductivity With Applications To Thermoelectrics And Thermal Management: A Review, Tianli Feng, Xiulin Ruan Jan 2014

Prediction Of Spectral Phonon Mean Free Path And Thermal Conductivity With Applications To Thermoelectrics And Thermal Management: A Review, Tianli Feng, Xiulin Ruan

Birck and NCN Publications

We give a review of the theoretical approaches for predicting spectral phonon mean free path and thermal conductivity of solids. The methods can be summarized into two categories: anharmonic lattice dynamics calculation and molecular dynamics simulation. In the anharmonic lattice dynamics calculation, the anharmonic force constants are used first to calculate the phonon scattering rates, and then the Boltzmann transport equations are solved using either standard single mode relaxation time approximation or the Iterative Scheme method for the thermal conductivity. The MD method involves the time domain or frequency domain normal mode analysis. We present the theoretical frameworks of the …

Identidroid: Android Can Finally Wear Its Anonymous Suit, Bilal Shebaro, Oyindamola Oluwatimi, Daniele Midi, Elisa Bertino

Cyber Center Publications

Because privacy today is a major concern for mobile applications, network anonymizers are widely available on smartphones, such as Android. However despite the use of such anonymizers, in many cases applications are still able to identify the user and the device by different means than the IP address. The reason is that very often applications require device services and information that go beyond the capabilities of anonymous networks in protecting users’ identity and privacy. In this paper, we propose two solutions that address this problem. The first solution is based on an approach that shadows user and application data, device …

Lab-Scale Fast-Hydropyrolysis And Vapor-Phase Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation For Producing Liquid Fuel Range Hydrocarbons From Intact Biomass, Vinod Kumar Venkatakrishnan Jan 2014

Lab-Scale Fast-Hydropyrolysis And Vapor-Phase Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation For Producing Liquid Fuel Range Hydrocarbons From Intact Biomass, Vinod Kumar Venkatakrishnan

Open Access Dissertations

Liquid transportation fuels are primarily produced from petroleum-based non-renewable carbon sources. Sustainably available lignocellulosic biomass, as a renewable form of atmospheric carbon, could be utilized to produce hydrocarbon-based fuels with high energy density. One of the process options for this conversion is the H2Bioil process, where biomass is rapidly heated in a hydrogen environment to produce fast-hydropyrolysis vapors that are catalytically upgraded in downstream hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) to produce hydrocarbons. This process has been modeled to have high carbon and energy efficiencies of ~70% and ~75%, respectively.

This dissertation presents the results of a lab-scale experimental proof-of-concept for the H2Bioil process …

Concession Analysis For Highway Infrastructure Projects Financed As Public-Private Partnerships, Tanaphat Jeerangsuwan Jan 2014

Concession Analysis For Highway Infrastructure Projects Financed As Public-Private Partnerships, Tanaphat Jeerangsuwan

Open Access Dissertations

Public funds allocated to the improvement and maintenance of highway infrastructure have reached the limits due to a rapid rate of socioeconomic growth and deterioration in infrastructure system performance. A public-private partnership (PPP) concessions a contractual and project financing mechanism that helps public authorities lessen the impact of their limited financial resources. In this project financing scheme, a public authority enters into a partnership with a private concessionaire for the purpose of developing a specific infrastructure facility. In return, the concessionaire receives the right to operate for a specified period of time. This creates strong potential for the delivery of …

Piecemeal Versus Integrated Design: Framing Meets Design Thinking, Stephen Secules, Ayush Gupta, Andrew Elby Jan 2014

Piecemeal Versus Integrated Design: Framing Meets Design Thinking, Stephen Secules, Ayush Gupta, Andrew Elby

Design Thinking Research Symposium

Systems thinking is an important component of engineering design thinking but one that is often difficult for beginning designers. In this paper, we present an empirically grounded case that sometimes the novice-like design behaviors emerge, not due to a lack of skills/knowledge on part of the student designers, but by the nature of the way the activity is structured and the implicit and explicit messages communicated to the students on the nature of the design task. Our analysis draws on video-records of brainstorming and design review and briefing meetings between students, instructors, and stakeholders in the context of a service-learning …

Motivation Of Community Partners And Advisors To Participate In Community Engagement Engineering Programs, Julia D Thompson, Brent Jesiek Jan 2014

Motivation Of Community Partners And Advisors To Participate In Community Engagement Engineering Programs, Julia D Thompson, Brent Jesiek

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

Since 2000, research in service-learning has started to investigate partnerships and community voice, but this research trend has received little attention among engineering education scholars. This study aims to fill this gap by developing a richer understanding of community-university partnerships in engineering community engagement from the perspectives of academic programs and served communities. In part inspired by the existing service-learning literature, this study addresses the question: Why are individuals and local community organizations involved in engineering service-learning partnerships? This study utilizes a single case study design, with data collection including in-depth interviews with community partners, faculty and program administrators (n=11) …

Design For The Other 90% And Appropriate Technology: The Legacies Of Paul Polak And E.F. Schumacher, Lindsey Anne Nelson Jan 2014

Design For The Other 90% And Appropriate Technology: The Legacies Of Paul Polak And E.F. Schumacher, Lindsey Anne Nelson

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

Recent movements showcase engineering design activities on behalf of poor people, inspiring engineering educators to create global service-learning programs. People who encourage engineers to “design for the other 90%” envision globally engaged businesses paving a new way forward for poverty eradication while other engineers pursue forms of “appropriate technology”to create socially-just technological systems. The engineering practices related to these phrases raise questions of which people benefit from engineering design for poverty alleviation, how engineers define “poor” people, what indicates “success” when engineers design for poverty alleviation, and how engineering educators create meaningful global service-learning programs for students. This paper uses mediated …

Analysis Of The Influence Of Organic Corrosion Inhibitors On Corrosion Of Reinforcement In Concrete Bridge Structure Under Simulated Field Service Environment, Liang Shi, J. Ye, C. C. Chen, Y. Wu, J. Z. Liu

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

For concrete bridge projects in marine environments, attention must be paid to the reinforcement corrosion problems caused by chloride intrusion. As kinds of functional admixtures, which can reduce the reinforcement corrosion rate, corrosion inhibitors are becoming very popular in China in new bridge projects. Corrosion inhibitors cover both inorganic and organic inhibitors. Nitrite is representative of inorganic corrosion inhibitors, but its carcinogenicity has hindered its further development. Organic corrosion inhibitors such as small-molecule-based alcohol amine series are becoming the focus of attention. To guide the scientific applications of organic corrosion inhibitors, China is carrying out broad applications technology research. But …

Cognitive Challenges To Resilience Dynamics In Managing Large- Scale Event Response, Barrett S. Caldwell Jan 2014

Cognitive Challenges To Resilience Dynamics In Managing Large- Scale Event Response, Barrett S. Caldwell

School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

In early 2014, a number of large-scale adverse weather events in the United States (and elsewhere) have renewed discussions of event response and resilience. Unlike events caused by human error or malicious intent, adverse natural events can be seen as uncontrolled and unpreventable; the measure of response success is the mitigation of adverse and disastrous effects. However, significant cognitive limitations interfere with human decision makers’ ability to effectively estimate likelihood, magnitude, and effective response of large-scale events in the face of multiple forms of uncertainty and system dependencies. Some authors highlight stability and maintenance of original design capability as …

Parents As Critical Influence: Insights From Five Different Studies, Brianna L. Dorie, Tamecia R. Jones, Meagan C Pollock, Monica Cardella

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

Parents play a number of roles in engineering education: they can motivate children’s interest in engineering in early childhood, as well as later when their child is in the process of selecting a major at college, they can provide support in learning engineering concepts and thinking skills, and can serve as role models if they themselves are engineers. Several empirical studies have shown that parents play a significant role in the occupational aspiration and career goal development of their children. In addition, parents’ own beliefs and aspirations have been found to be important factors in children’s career and academic aspirations. In …
