Model Reference Control For Ultra-High Precision Positioning Systems, Lan Yu Jan 2011

Model Reference Control For Ultra-High Precision Positioning Systems, Lan Yu

Dissertations

Due to the increasing demands of high-density semiconductors, molecular biology, optoelectronics, and MEMS/NEMS in the past decades, control of ultra-high precision positioning using piezoelectricity has become an important area because of its high displacement resolution, wide bandwidth, low power consumption, and potential low cost. However, the relatively small displacement range limits its application. This work proposed a practical ultra-high precision piezoelectric positioning system with a complementary high displacement range actuation technology. Solenoids are low cost, high speed electromagnetic actuators which are commonly used in on-off mode only because of the inherent high nonlinear force-stroke characteristics and unipolar forces (push/pull) generated …

Underwater Communication Via Particle Velocity Channels : Principles, Channel Models, And System Design, Huaihai Guo Jan 2011

Underwater Communication Via Particle Velocity Channels : Principles, Channel Models, And System Design, Huaihai Guo

Dissertations

A vector sensor is capable of measuring important non-scalar components of the acoustic field such as the particle velocity, which cannot be obtained by a single scalar pressure sensor. In the past few decades, extensive research has been conducted on the theory and design of vector sensors. On the other hand, underwater acoustic communication systems have been relying on scalar sensors only, which measure the pressure of the acoustic field. By taking advantage of the vector components of the acoustic field, such as the particle velocity, the vector sensor can be used for detecting the transmitted data. In this dissertation, …

Seismic Characterization Of Recycled Aggregate Concrete, Amin Jamali Jan 2011

Seismic Characterization Of Recycled Aggregate Concrete, Amin Jamali

Dissertations

There are significant environmental benefits of recycling waste concrete and reusing it as aggregate for structural concrete, but the use of Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) is yet limited to non-structural applications such as road sub-base. Widespread application of RAC in areas such as seismic design requires an improved knowledge of RAC behavior under multiaxial state of stresses.

The main objective of this research is the characterization of seismic properties of RAC by developing a stress-strain model which can reasonably describe the behavior under both unconfined and confined conditions. An extensive experimental program, including testing of several plain RAC cylinders as …

In the second part of the research, the nanohybrid was melt dispersed in the polymer to produce ternary (API/ Clay/ Polymer) composites. For comparison, API-polymer solid …

Emg-Based Determination Of Upper Extremity Virtual Trajectory, Akshata Anand Korgaonkar Jan 2011

Emg-Based Determination Of Upper Extremity Virtual Trajectory, Akshata Anand Korgaonkar

Theses

Movement and position of the limbs of the human body are controlled by the interaction between the muscle and the peripheral and central nervous system. This interaction is nothing but the neural signals. Neural signals are electrical in nature and referred as action potentials. An EMG is a summation of action potentials from the muscle fibers under the electrode placed on the skin. Thus it is easy to estimate the nature and timing of the movement from the firing of an EMG signal. Kai Chen in his dissertation has built the model to represent the arm movement with stiffness, damping, …

Three haptically rendered targets at different points in space were presented to the subjects using stereo virtual environment. The simulation was programmed using Visual C++ and OpenGL. Eight …

Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel Jan 2011

Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel

Theses

Aortic stiffness increases with hypertension and aging, and much of this increase has been thought to occur due to changes in the extracellular matrix. However, an increase in cell stiffness could also be important. To study the cellular contribution to aortic stiffness, a reconstituted aortic tissue model (composed of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a collagen matrix) was developed. VSMCs isolated from thoracic aortic samples of 5-week and 18-week old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were passaged four times and then separately incubated in collagen for two days on a cylindrical mandrel. The resulting …

Design And Fabrication Of A Tapped Densification Apparatus For Bulk Solids, Joshua H. De Jong Jan 2011

Design And Fabrication Of A Tapped Densification Apparatus For Bulk Solids, Joshua H. De Jong

Theses

Experiments are commonly used to ascertain the flow properties of bulk solids. One such property is a measurement quantity known as the tapped density. Here, a container of granular material is subjected to a long sequence of discrete taps, after which the bulk density - the total mass divided by the volume occupied –- is determined. Current technology exists to achieve the maximum tap density by subjecting a container to a user defined number of taps at a specific, predetermined amplitude and frequency. However, the final bulk density is known to be dependent on the tap parameters. It can therefore …

Motor Data Scaling By Respiration Frequencies In Rest, Amit Madhukar Kamble Aug 2010

Motor Data Scaling By Respiration Frequencies In Rest, Amit Madhukar Kamble

Theses

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is widely used as a tool to see activations in the different brain regions. Motor data acquired from fMRI scan is accompanied with signal due to hemodynamic changes taking place during the scan. This hemodynamic signal is dominated by parameter alteration in the large vessels of brain. Scaling of task induced BOLD signal with hypercapnic or breathold data is one of the effective methods to minimize the signal due to large vessels. Patient discomfort and compliance has been a major issue with these methods hence in this study we used respiration frequencies in rest data …

Hardware Support For Real-Time Network Security And Packet Classification Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Nitesh Bhicu Guinde May 2010

Hardware Support For Real-Time Network Security And Packet Classification Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Nitesh Bhicu Guinde

Dissertations

Deep packet inspection and packet classification are the most computationally expensive operations in a Network Intrusion Detection (NID) system. Deep packet inspection involves content matching where the payload of the incoming packets is matched against a set of signatures in the database. Packet classification involves inspection of the packet header fields and is basically a multi-dimensional matching problem. Any matching in software is very slow in comparison to current network speeds. Also, both of these problems need a solution which is scalable and can work at high speeds. Due to the high complexity of these matching problems, only Field-Programmable Gate …

Properties And Device Applications Of Silicon And Silicon-Germanium Nanostructures With Different Dimensions, Han-Yun Chang

Dissertations

Defect-free crystalline Si/SiGe(Ge) nanostructures are demonstrated despite the 4% lattice mismatch between Si and Ge. The lattice mismatch-induced strain is sufficiently relaxed through the designed, cluster morphology, or nanowire (NW) structures. Future device applications of these nano structures require complete understanding of their structural, optical, electrical and thermal properties. This study explores these properties in two-dimensional (2D) Si/Si:B delta-doped multilayers, 2D Si/Si1-xGex planar multilayers, three-dimensional (3D) Si/Si1-xGex cluster multilayers, one-dimensional (1D) Si NWs and 1D Si/Ge NW heterojunctions (HJs).

Raman scattering and photoluminescence measurements show that by alternating heavily boron-doped layers with layers of …

The Floating Contract Between Risk-Averse Supply Chain Partners In A Volatile Commodity Price Environment, Mojisola Kike Otegbeye

Dissertations

In this dissertation, two separate but closely related decision making problems in environments of volatile commodity prices are addressed. In the first problem, a risk-averse commodity user's purchasing policy and his risk-neutral supplier's pricing decision, where the user can purchase his needs through contract with his supplier as well as directly from the spot market, are analyzed. The commodity user is assumed to be the supplier's sole client, and the supplier can always expand capacity, at a cost to the user, to accommodate the user's demand in excess of initially reserved capacity.

In the more generalized second problem, both parties …

Shape memory polymers are novel material that can be easily formed into complex shapes, retaining memory of their original shape even after undergoing large deformations. The temporary shape is stable and return to the original shape is triggered by a suitable mechanism such heating the polymer above a transition temperature. Glassy shape memory polymers are called glassy because the temporary shape is fixed by the formation of a glassy solid, while …

Transport Mechanisms And Modeling Of Riser Reactor, Dawei Wang May 2010

Transport Mechanisms And Modeling Of Riser Reactor, Dawei Wang

Dissertations

Riser reactors are extensively employed in various industrial applications. In a riser reactor, the hydrodynamics is closely interacted with kinetic reactions. Common models for the performance prediction of riser reactors overlook this vital coupling effect, which not only miss the important reaction characteristics in the dense-phase transport regime of riser reactors but also misinterpret the kinetic properties via ad hoc adjustments. It is noted that the modeling of hydrodynamics in riser flows has major flaws in its predictability of phase transport in both dense-phase and accelerating regimes where most reactions occur. In addition, with the spray feeding of reactants at …

Optimizing Integrated Service For A Transit Route With Heterogeneous Demand, Yavuz Yusuf Ulusoy May 2010

Optimizing Integrated Service For A Transit Route With Heterogeneous Demand, Yavuz Yusuf Ulusoy

Dissertations

The methodology developed in this dissertation attempts to optimize integrated service that minimizes the total cost, including user and supplier costs, of a transit route with heterogeneous demand. While minimizing total cost, a set of practical constraints, such as capacity, operable fleet size and frequency conservation, are considered.

The research problem is presented in three scenarios, consisting of various service patterns (e.g., all-stop, short-turn and express) under heterogeneous demand. A logit-based model was used to estimate passenger transfer demand. An exhaustive search method was developed to find the optimal solutions for a simplified transit route with six stops, and a …

Mechanisms For Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In Networks With Extended Services, Zhen Qin May 2010

Mechanisms For Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In Networks With Extended Services, Zhen Qin

Dissertations

The emerging network traffic with various Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements creates a demand for QoS service provisioning beyond the best effort service that Internet currently provides. QoS provisioning requires a framework that satisfies users' QoS and cost demand while maximizes benefits for network service providers. It is considered that QoS provisioning involves three issues: a) estimations of the network QoS performance, which can be achieved by performing network measurement; b) dissemination of the measured QoS states throughout the network with states exchanged among different network routers; and c) QoS routing. In this dissertation, these three issues are addressed.

In QoS networks, …
