Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh
Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh
Theses
The purpose of this Thesis is to study the life of liquid crystal display devices as at present available in the market place. To accomplish this, accelerated tempera-ture conditions at 77°C and 85°C were used.
During the last few years, there has grown a tremendous interest in wide range temperature operating and fast LCDs. It is therefore important to understand how LCDs behave under these conditions.
The reliability of a liquid crystal display is usually measured in terms of a quantative degradation in electrical performance and a degradation in visual appearance. The degradation in visual appear6knce may manifest itself as …
A Survey Of The Literature On Moisture In Building Construction, Lawrence Charles Tiboldo
A Survey Of The Literature On Moisture In Building Construction, Lawrence Charles Tiboldo
Theses
The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the literature on moisture in buildings for its usefulness in the understanding of the theory involved in moisture transfer in buildings. Because analysis of the effects of moisture migration and development of condensation control strategies in structures depends on the knowledge of heat and moisture transfer theory as well as on the documented data on building material properties, evaluation of the usefulness of the reference material will serve as an indication of the availability of pertinent information.
To fulfill this objective, the literature listed as references to Chapter 21 of the 1985 …
Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang
Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang
Theses
A computer model-based on VAX-ANSYS system was developed to model the behavior of multi-layer rock systems reinforced by pretensioned rock bolts. Three models were utilized for this study. The third model represents the friction between interlayers occuring due to the tensioned rock-bolts. Results obtained from this study compare favorably with those obtained from equations developed from model studies. An attempt has been made to study the effects of creep on the behavior of the rock-layer system.
Spectrum Analysis And Real-Time Analysis Of Electroencephalograms, Suzanne Hesook Won
Spectrum Analysis And Real-Time Analysis Of Electroencephalograms, Suzanne Hesook Won
Theses
The analysis of the EEG background waveform is studied by two techniques, spectrum analysis and real-time analysis. The spectrum analysis is performed by using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) on a segment of the signal. The resulting signal is classified into different band types such as delta, theta, alpha and beta, to see the power in each band, and the magnitude of the power on the left and right side if the brain is evaluated for asymmetry. The mean power frequency shows the frequency where the maxinum power exists in each band type. This type of analysis provides overall information of …

Reliability Evaluation Of Liquid Crystal Displays Under Accelerated Test Conditions, Ravi Sankar Kalyandrug
Theses
This study has determined the effects of high temperature and humidity on the reliability of liquid crystal dis-plays.
Reliability life testing was done on variety of LCD samples under different operating conditions. All the besting was done under accelerated conditions, including high temperature of 85°C and relative humidity of 70%. A number of failure modes were identified in the long series'of tests.
Among many failure modes such as peeling of seal, degradation of polarizers etc., the most important is the degradation of alignment of liquid crystal molecules. Leakage current measurements were made on all the LCD samples before and after …
Model Experiment Of Rock Fracturing Caused By Driving Piles, Dai-Heyng Lee
Model Experiment Of Rock Fracturing Caused By Driving Piles, Dai-Heyng Lee
Theses
The geotechical construction problem of rock fracturing caused by pile driving is investigated using a laboratory model. One inch diameter closed bottom steel pipes were driven into a simulated rock mass consisting of masonry bricks having an average compressive strength 3,200 psi. Both single pile and five pile model groups were tested. The single pile tests indicated that a threshold of penetration behavior occurred at a theorical hammer energy of 100 ft-lb and this was used for the group tests. Penetration rates were measured using an optical level.
Piles in the five pile model group were initially driven to a …
Laminar Flow Through A Porous Annulus With Surface Suction, Stelios C. Nicolaides
Laminar Flow Through A Porous Annulus With Surface Suction, Stelios C. Nicolaides
Theses
A theoretical investigation was conducted to obtain the velocity, pressure and shear stress distributions for incompressible, steady, fully developed, laminar flow through an annulus, with a uniformly porous inside tube wall. Suction at the walls is a result of the pressure difference across the porous wall.
The continuity equation, momentum equation and the Darcy's law for suction velocity are analysed with an integral method. The resulting differential equations were solved using a numerical technique.
For the same radii ratio, dimensionless inlet pressures on both sides of the porous wall and dimensionless porous resistance, the dimensionless length required to reach zero …
Frequency Characterization Of A Thin Linear Antenna Using Diakoptic Theory, Howard Harold Smith
Frequency Characterization Of A Thin Linear Antenna Using Diakoptic Theory, Howard Harold Smith
Theses
A frequency dependent analytical expression for the input impedance of a thin wire antenna is obtained using diakoptic theory. In diakoptic theory the linear antenna is seperated into electrically short segments where each segment is treated as a two-port network. This approach eliminates the need for an integral equation formulation. An impedance matrix is found which characterizes coupling between all segments. By expanding the free space Green's function in a power series in wavenumber k each entry in the resultant impedance matrix is obtained as a function of frequency. Enforcement of the continuity of currents and equality of scalar potentials …
Identification Of Linear System With Feedback Input, Jyh Yang
Identification Of Linear System With Feedback Input, Jyh Yang
Theses
A new procedure with feedback input is presented for identification of continuous-time systems. Using Lyapunov's direct method to prove it asymptotic stability. For the procedure to be applicable, it's assumed that all the state variables of the plant are accessible and that there is no measurement noise so the model reference scheme can be used to identify the parameters of the plant.
The procedure results in the convergence of every parameter of a model to the corresponding one of the system as the time approaching to infinite i.e. t→∞. Digital computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the …
The Effect Of Single Electrolytes On The Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Of Mixed Solvents, Peggy Tomasula
The Effect Of Single Electrolytes On The Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Of Mixed Solvents, Peggy Tomasula
Dissertations
A group-contribution model for the prediction of salt-effects on the vapor-liquid equilibria of multicomponent electrolytic solutions containing a single electrolyte is presented. Coulombic interactions are represented through a Pitzer term. Solvation effects and short-range interactions are represented through a UNIQUAC-type expression. An ion-size, a solvation and three ion-solvent interaction parameters per salt-solvent binary are required for multicomponent predictions.
All parameters are obtained only through the correlation of binary salt-solvent osmotic coefficient and vapor-pressure depression data at 25°C, in most cases, and binary solvent VLE data. The salt-solvent binary data were correlated with an average percent error in CD of 2.5 …
Ternary Ion Exchange In Fixed Beds : Equilibrium And Dynamics, David W. H. Roth
Ternary Ion Exchange In Fixed Beds : Equilibrium And Dynamics, David W. H. Roth
Dissertations
A model was developed to simulate ion exchange within fixed beds for ternary systems. Models of the fluid phase material balance, phase equilibria, and diffusion of ions through the film and within the resin phase incorporated the latest advances in ion exchange theory. The separate model elements were combined after testing into an overall general model. Non-linear regression support programs were developed to estimate equilibrium parameters and resin phase diffusion coefficients.
A computer program was developed to estimate axial dispersion coefficients from experimental data. General correlations derived from literature sources were tested, and axial dispersion terms were included in the …

Determinants Of Acceptance Of Computer Mediated Communication System, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Starr Roxanne Hiltz, Elaine B. Kerr, Kenneth Johnson, Murray Turoff
Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports
Acceptance of Computer-Mediated communication Systems (CMCS) by managers and professionals corresponds to its incorporation into their daily patterns of communication and work. Acceptance includes at least three inter-related dimensions: amount of use, subjective satisfaction with the process of using the system, and a perception that system use has positive impacts upon productivity.
Pre-use and follow-up questionnaires were distributed to 150- 250 new users of four different CMCS. Three are conferencing systems, designed to support "group work." They differ in terms of comprehensiveness or complexity of design, and size and nature of the user communities; COM/KOM, a Swedish system with mostly …
Investigation Of Pre-Detection Signal Processing Of Pseudonoise Communication Signals In The Presence Of Additive White Gaussian Noise And Cw And Bursty Interference, Israel Mayk
Dissertations
By comparison to conventional communication systems, spread-spectrum systems are known to be less affected by interference because of their large dimensionality in signal space. Nevertheless, significant performance degradation is experienced when large interference exists in a few or even one signal coordinates. In this case, interference reduction techniques are also known to provide additional processing gain. A novel class of pseudonoise (PN) invariant algorithms is derived to reduce the impact of interference and restore much of the structure of PN signals received in the presence of interference and noise. A PN signal received by a pre-detection signal process (PDSP) implementing …
Kinetic Modeling Of A Laminar-Flow Reactor, Shih-Hsin Chang
Kinetic Modeling Of A Laminar-Flow Reactor, Shih-Hsin Chang
Dissertations
The laminar-flow reactor considering radial dispersion for a species incurring first-order homogeneous (bulk) and heterogeneous (wall) chemical reactions was mathematically modeled. The equation was solved both analytically, and by the Crank-Nicolson finite-difference technique.
The response surface method was used to obtain the optimum values of the two rate constants. The optimum values interact because the wall and bulk reactions proceed in parallel. Varied reactor diameters serve to decouple the bulk and wall reactions to locate the true values of the rate constants.
Four dimensionless variables were defined and used to characterize the reacting system. In addition, their values were shown …
The Effect Of A Higher Order Pole On The Optimum Design Of Minimum Threshold Phase Locked Detectors, Bernard Zivotofsky
The Effect Of A Higher Order Pole On The Optimum Design Of Minimum Threshold Phase Locked Detectors, Bernard Zivotofsky
Dissertations
The phase lockedloop is widely used as an FM demodulator known as a phaselocked detector (PLD). It is particularly useful in the detection of weak signals because lower threshold is possible with a PLD than with a conventional limiter discriminator. An enhanced version PLD known as an extended range phaselocked detector (ERPLD) is capable of further threshold reduction. The most popular PLD is a second order type I system employing a loop filter having one real pole and one real zero.
One implementation of an ERPLD calls for the addition of a differentiator to the standard loop filter which replaces …
Automated Eeg Spectrum Analysis System, Marinela C. Laguna
Automated Eeg Spectrum Analysis System, Marinela C. Laguna
Theses
A computer system has been designed to acquire EEG data from monkeys and to perform the spectral and statistical analysis. The system is capable of processing two channels simultaneously, acquire 64 Kbytes of EEG data for each channel on floppy disk, do the spectrums and averages of the spectrums, and calculate the histogram amplitudes of 13 frequency bands in a range of 0-71.1 Hz.
The software gives the user a lot of choices with respect to data acquisition and processing. The relative spectral power differences between "no-drug" and "drug" experiments give information about the drug effects on the central nervous …
Vapor Pressures Of Some Coal Oil Fractions, David G. Gaydos
Vapor Pressures Of Some Coal Oil Fractions, David G. Gaydos
Theses
New data on coal tar oils and data from the literature on pure compounds and oils derived from coal were used for testing the predictions by the correlation of Maxwell—Bonnell. Based on the observation that the discrepancies between the predicted values and the data are systematic, recommendations were deduced on needed modifications to the correlation. A proposal for modification to the Maxwell and Bonnell correlation to improve prediction of vapor pressures of highly aromatic fuel fractions with characterization factors of8 UOPK 10.5 was made.
Experimental data were taken on vapor pressures of fractions of coke oven coal tar oils and …
The Biodegradation Of Phenolics Using Mixed Liquor From Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners Plant, Newark, New Jersey, Daewon Pak
Theses
The biological degradation of phenol, O-chlorophenol, and 2,6-dichlorophenol was studied at room temperature in aerated 5 liter batch reactors using mixed liquor from Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners Plant (Newark, New Jersey). From the concentration versus time data, kinetic rate constants were determined for phenol (at 100 ppm), 2'-chlorophenol (at 20 ppm), and 2,6-dichlorophenol (at 10 ppm). Air stripping and adsorption were determined to be insignificant removal mechanisms for the three compounds studied.
It was noted that the biodegradation rates increased after the organisms were acclimated to 100 ppm phenol. In addition, on substrate exposure, the degradation rate increased from the …

The Kinetics And Hepatotoxicity Of Benzyl Chloride Vapor In Rats, Hari V. Rao
Theses
Male Sprague Dawley rats (250g) were exposed to benzyl chloride vapor at a concentration of 220 ppm for 6 hours. During inhalation, the blood benzyl chloride concentration increased to reach a steady state level of 9-10 ug/ml between 4 and 6 hours of exposure. A small concentration of benzyl chloride (0.86 ug/ml) was present in the blood four hours after the termination of exposure. The absorption half life was 0.53 hours (0.39-0.81) and the elimination half life was l.12 hour (0.93-l.40).
The absorbed benzyl chloride was largely retained in the blood and some of it (0.22 ug/g) was sequestered into …
Protective Laboratory Measures For The Flexible Wall Permeameter And The Atterberg Limits Tests Using Hazardous And Toxic Chemicals, Robert A. Tetla
Protective Laboratory Measures For The Flexible Wall Permeameter And The Atterberg Limits Tests Using Hazardous And Toxic Chemicals, Robert A. Tetla
Theses
Safety procedures for performing geotechnical testing with hazardous and toxic materials, excluding radioactive wastes, are developed for the Flexible Wall Permeameter and the Atterberg Limits Tests. The tests were evaluated in detail to determine the critical points at which the technician would be exposed to the hazardous and/or toxic permeant. It was found that the following safety measures should always be taken; 1) the apparatus and all testing should be undertaken in a sliding sash hood using the proper face velocity, 2) air monitoring using a personal dosimeter and/or a detector tube is required to assure that the concentration of …
Improving The Capabilities Of The Chemical Engineering Simulation System (Chess) Computer Program, Thomas Zvolensky
Improving The Capabilities Of The Chemical Engineering Simulation System (Chess) Computer Program, Thomas Zvolensky
Theses
Chemical process simulation programs have become an indispensable tool to chemical engineers in the preparation of heat and material balances, and energy conservation studies. Since the 1960's several dozen process simulators have been developed which are in use today within companies and through computer service bureaus. Due to advances in the areas of unit operation analysis and thermodynamic relations, these programs require periodic modification. This thesis describes the programming modifications made to the Chemical Engineering Simulation System (CHESS) version 2.0, computer program. This undertaking was considered warranted since no improvements have been made to CHESS since its release in 1971. …
Human Factors In The Design Of Computer Graphics Input/Output Interfaces, Michael Uche Amadi
Human Factors In The Design Of Computer Graphics Input/Output Interfaces, Michael Uche Amadi
Theses
Computers are used for solving problems of various kinds and therefore, if the users are to fully benefit from the systems, they must be considered during the earliest stages of the system development. There are three major classes of computer users namely: naive, managerial, and scientific-technical. These users have different characteristics that the designer must consider within his/her system. Only by including such distinctions will these user groups each be able to perform at their respective optimum levels. Just as there are different users, there are also numerous applications to which computers can be applied. This thesis will be restricted …
Buckling Of Some Grooved Columns, Clovis Georges Baaklini
Buckling Of Some Grooved Columns, Clovis Georges Baaklini
Theses
Columns with two types of transverse grooves are analyzed: a one-sided groove whose bottom is parallel to a vertical plane and cross-section is constant, and a concentric uniform groove. Then, for illustration and to be more specific, round columns are selected such that the cross-section becomes partially circular, for one-sided grooves and totally circular for a concentric groove. The columns are simply supported at both ends and subjected to a compressive eccentric load P at eccentricity e. The static equilibrium of such columns is studied via two types of solutions: the solution to three-segment column and a substantially simpler but …
