Computer Aided Mathematical Modeling Of A Once Through Claus Type Sulfur Recovery Process, Yuriy Osyp Kutny

Theses

The computer aided mathematical modeling of the once through Claus process for hydrogen sulfide conversion to sulfur is presented herein. This vapor phase oxidation reaction is carried out using one thermal reactor and up to three bauxite catalytic reactors with sulfur condensers in between. The method of catalytic reactor feed reheat and its ramifications upon reactor performance and total model convergence is of major importance.

The reactor feed preheat can be carried out in either of the following ways: (1) indirect heat exchange using some external heat source; (2) indirect heat exchange using other hot process streams as heat source; …

An 8052 Ah - Basic, Based Development System, Suresh Vishwanath Leley May 1986

An 8052 Ah - Basic, Based Development System, Suresh Vishwanath Leley

Theses

This project exploits the latest in microcontrollers-an entire environment for developing and prototyping a microcontroller application. With one key chip, a little glue, and a Dumb terminal a powerful system is achieved at a vanishingly small cost. This "one chip" system is adequate for realizing a wide range of applications calling for a small computer or an embedded processor.

Besides economy of system cost, the turn around time from concept to functioning application can be extremely short, even when the development engineer is not particularly well acquainted with traditional assembly language and microprocessor development practices. This economy is achieved by …

Stress Analysis Of A Pressure Vessel By The Finite Element Method, Hsin-Te Liao May 1986

Stress Analysis Of A Pressure Vessel By The Finite Element Method, Hsin-Te Liao

Theses

The objective of this paper is to take a finite element program, called ANSYS, to analyze the surface stress distribution of a thin-wall pressure vessel with a spherical head.

The computer program ANSYS, which primarily applies the principle of virtual work in solid continuum, has been used to solve shell problems with quadrilateral element. Problems solved are: <1> hoop stress <2> meridional stress (<)3) maximum shear stress.

In this paper, the theoretical finite element formulation of axisymmetric elasticity of the ANSYS program is presented.

Finally, some numerical examples of shells with spherical heads of various radius are given. The solution obtained from ANSYS is very …

An Analysis Of Minimum Shift Keying From The Viewpoints Of Quadrature Multiplexed And Multi-H Continuous Phase Modulation Signaling, Alfred Anthony De Seta

Theses

Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) is a bandwidth efficient modulation scheme which offers superior performance over Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) and Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (OQPSK). This paper discusses these modulation techniques from a quadrature multiplexed signaling viewpoint and compares them in terms of error performance, bandwidth properties and bandlimiting and hardlimiting effects. MSK is also considered as a special case of a multi-h Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) signal and the Viterbi algorithm is presented as an optimal detection scheme for this class of signals. A computer simulation is performed with the VA as the detection mechanism for an …

The Conversion Of The Process Flowsheet Simulator, Flowtran, For Fortran 66 Based Mainframe Computers, Timothy Edward Roche

Theses

The process flowsheet simulator FLOWTRAN was converted from FORTRAN 77 code to FORTRAN 66 code. The conversion was accomplished by developing a number of subprograms to handle FORTRAN 77 intrinsic functions that are missing in the FORTRAN 66 standard and by altering the code to take advantage of the developed subprograms. Also developed were a set of procedure files for executing the FORTRAN 66 FLOWTRAN on a Sperry-Univac 90/80-4. The new FLOWTRAN was tested and performs identically to the FORTRAN 77 version. The FORTRAN 66 FLOWTRAN can be installed on any mainframe computer with a FORTRAN 66 compiler.

Theses

Chebyshev polynomial and collocation methods are adapted to solve general ordinary differential equations ( initial-value problems and boundary-value problems ). Approximate solutions of initial-value problems are obtained in step-by-step fasion. the solutions have minimax absolute error in the interval and correct values at the end points. The approximate solutions of boundary-value problem will be continuous on the whole domain and have piecewise Chebyshev approximation characteristics in each subinterval of the chosen partition.

Implementation Of Finite Element Method On A Microcomputer, Chi-Yuang Huang May 1986

Implementation Of Finite Element Method On A Microcomputer, Chi-Yuang Huang

Theses

A finite-element program FEM2D has been implemented on a PHILIPS microcomputer. The program has a generation preprocessor and thus makes finite-element analysis on a microcomputer considerably easier than before, since it allows models to be created and edited much faster than by manual method. The interactive program FEM2D prompts the user to input data directly from the screen. It is convenient for the user, both in teaching and learning.

The FEM2D is a two-dimensional finite-element program capable of solving two-dimensional problems, such as plane elasticity, heat transfer and imcompressible fluid flow problems. It is developed with a formulation of a …

Comparison Of Several Manufacturing Techniques Used To Produce A Sterile Antibiotic Powder, Antonio Joseph Barberio May 1986

Comparison Of Several Manufacturing Techniques Used To Produce A Sterile Antibiotic Powder, Antonio Joseph Barberio

Theses

There are several manufacturing processes (crystallization, spray drying, freeze drying, and closed crystallization) that are used to produce a sterile antibiotic powder. A pharmaceutical manufacturer is faced with the problem of deciding which process is best suited for their operations. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a comparison technique that might aid in a solution to this problem. In the first step of the comparison technique, a fixed rating is assigned to a number of different categories (i.e. initial cost of equipment, product purity, etc.) for each process. The fixed ratings were established from an industrial survey, and …

Modelling Of Pile Load Tests In Weak Rock, Daniel Walter Caruso May 1986

Modelling Of Pile Load Tests In Weak Rock, Daniel Walter Caruso

The static load testing system applied loads hydraulically, and the load settlement behavior was monitored using an electronic load cell and a linear variable differential transducer (LVDT).

Tests were performed using 1" diameter steel pipe piles driven in a five pile group pattern at spacings of two diameters and four diameters. Piles were driven into a simulated rock mass consisting of …

Pozzolanic Admixtures In Concrete Mix, Ronghao Chen May 1986

Pozzolanic Admixtures In Concrete Mix, Ronghao Chen

Theses

Fly ash and condensed silica fume are two main mineral pozzolanic admixtures in portland cement concrete. The increasing use of the fly ash in concrete projects and concrete products during the past 3O years and condensed silica fume in several projects during the past 1O years indicates a greater acceptance of them as the mineral pozzolanic admixtures in concrete. Although the engineers are of some identical views in using these industrial byproducts in concrete projects, there are different views on how the behavior and utilization of fly ash con-crete and condensed silica fume concrete since the byproducts are not the …

Pressure Drop In A Strainer Element By The Finite Element Method, Wei-Long Chen May 1986

Pressure Drop In A Strainer Element By The Finite Element Method, Wei-Long Chen

Theses

The pressure drop in a strainer element which consists of a channel and a diffuser has been investigated by the finite element method and the semi-empirical analysis.

An existing finite element program, FEM2D using the penalty parameter model, was employed. It was found that the range of Reynolds numbers in the strainer element was 0.193 to 4.824. For the pressure drop in the channel, the finite element method is in agreement with the analytical solution. For flow in the diffuser, the finite element method failed to give satisfactory results due to flow separation.

Biodegradation Of Multiple Substrates In A Batch Reactor, Nilesh Naik May 1986

Biodegradation Of Multiple Substrates In A Batch Reactor, Nilesh Naik

Theses

The biological degradation of multiple substrates was studied at room temperature in aerated 5-liter batch reactors using mixed liquor from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners wastewater treatment plant (Newark, New Jersey).

Two substrate mixtures were used (with initial concentration indicated in parenthesis): (1) phenol(100ppm) + nitrobenzene(10ppm) + 2,6-dichiorophenol(10ppm); (2) 2-chlorphenol(20ppm) + nitrobenzene(10ppm) + 2,6-dichlorphenol(10ppm). From concentration versus time data, kinetic rate constants for zero-order, first-order, and Monod models were determined. Most of the data were best fit by either the Monod or zero-order model. For all compounds tested biodegradation was the primary removal mechanism, and in many cases the rate …

Substructuring Analysis For Impact Dynamics Using Ansys Finite Element Package, Chang Ho Cho May 1986

Substructuring Analysis For Impact Dynamics Using Ansys Finite Element Package, Chang Ho Cho

Theses

This thesis is intended to serve as an introductory guide to ANSYS finite element package for the analysis of impact dynamics. Substructuring technique has been used to reduce the degrees of freedom.

Finite element method is essentially a numerical technique to calculate elastic deformations. However, by introducing some techniques like gap element, the technique can be easily extended to rigid body dynamic analysis. To solve the equation of motion both for rigid body and elastic deformations, direct integration technique is used in this thesis, i.e., Houbolt method.

ANSYS is a large scale general purpose computer program for finite element analysis. …

Emergency Stop Devices And The Human Factors Of Response, Robert Paul Guinter May 1986

Emergency Stop Devices And The Human Factors Of Response, Robert Paul Guinter

Theses

The manual emergency stop Was recognized as an im- portant aspect of machine control very early during the history of powered mechanical systems. The purpose, of course, was to allow machinery to be quickly stepped during emergencies to minimize equipment damage and/or personal injury. Today, however, the emphasis of control is being shifted more and more toward totally automatic systems. Often, the importance of manual emergency stopping and override of these systems is lost in the zeal to perfect automatic controls. The problem that evolves is how and when to provide an efficient human-machine interface to allow a manual emergency …

Circular Plate Analysis Using Finite Element Method, Shyh-Rong Chiu May 1986

The ANSYS computer program is the application of finite element methods to large-scale engineering problems. In this work the ANSYS program has been employed to solve the circular plate under uniformly loaded with various boundary conditions as follows: (1) clamped along entire edge, (2) simply supported along entire edge, (3) clamped at several points along the boundary, (4) simply supported at several points along the boundary, and (5) simply supported 36 points with 4 points clamped..

The results obtained from the ANSYS program illustrated that the finite element method has no boundary conditions constraints and presents good approximations to the …

Fracture Energy And Tensile Behavior Of Concrete, Wen-Jinn Chiou May 1986

Fracture Energy And Tensile Behavior Of Concrete, Wen-Jinn Chiou

Theses

Fracture behavior of concrete has been a subject of investigation for the past two decades. The need of understanding the complete tensile response of concrete is absolutely essential for theoretical modelling as well as design application of plain concrete structures.

In this study, attempts were made to investigate the validity of two important fracture parameters, namely, the fracture energy and the critical crack tip opening displacement. Three types of test specimen, dog- bone shaped tension specimen, notched beam and compact tension specimen, were investigated. These tests were conducted using the closed-loop MTS 810 strain-controlled testing system. For the uniaxial tension …

Reliability Studies On Solid Tantalum Electrolytic Capacitors By Means Of Accelerated Life Tests, Venkata R. Golthi May 1986

Reliability Studies On Solid Tantalum Electrolytic Capacitors By Means Of Accelerated Life Tests, Venkata R. Golthi

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to understand the failure mechanisms in Solid Tantalum Capacitors encapsulated in plastic, and to suggest the precautionary measures that prevent the occurrence of these failures.

The reliability of Solid Tantalum Capacitors encapsulated in plastic is of considerable interest because in some applications where the mechanical accelerations or shocks are considerable the "better" "hermitically" sealed type are not able to sustain themselves. Poor adherence between the dielectric film and the base metal Tantalum under the conditions of sudden mechanical shocks, causes problems.

Our study was carried out in two different directions, theoretical and experimental. The …

Theses

The writer of this thesis was once involved in the order processing function with the company studied and recognized that there is a need for a better method of processing customer orders that could be applicable to other companies.

The company studied is considered a "high tech" company, meaning that it is engaged in the design; manufacture, and sale of the latest state of the art products that employ modern computer technology. It is ironic that this company, on the leading edge in its field; is in great need of reform in the office methods used to order its products. …

The Dielectric Slab-Wedge Antenna, B. Keith Christensen May 1986

The Dielectric Slab-Wedge Antenna, B. Keith Christensen

Theses

A theoretical model and numerical investigation of the directive gain of a dielectric slab-wedge radiator is presented. The model is based on a union of the classical dielectric slab equations, local mode theory, and equivalent current distribution treatments of the truncated dielectric slab and wedge geometries.

The far field is developed from the sum of two current distributions. The slab region, up to the transition plane between slab and wedge, is replaced by equivalent electric and magnetic surface current densities. The wedge contribution is developed from a volume polarization current distribution.

Conservation of power is used to approximate the field …

Computer-Aided Design Of A Waveguide To A Suspended Stripline Transition For Millimeter-Wave Applications, Hsin-Yen Peng May 1986

Computer-Aided Design Of A Waveguide To A Suspended Stripline Transition For Millimeter-Wave Applications, Hsin-Yen Peng

Theses

Realization of millimeter-wave systems on suspended striplines necessitates transitions from such lines into waveguides for measurements and other purposes. Transition can be obtained through coupling TE10 mode in the waveguide into a TEM mode in the suspended stripline. A continuous transition using tapered complementary unilateral finline and two gradually increasing conducting tapered ridges is studied here. The tapered region is modelled using a number of uniform sections with gradually changing cross sections. The junction separating the tapered section from the suspended stripline is modelled via physically and electrically continuous terminations. Physical continuity approach is more flexible for manufacturing purpose at …
