Shear Performance And Behavior Of Long Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete, Benjamin Paul Gliha Jan 2018

Shear Performance And Behavior Of Long Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete, Benjamin Paul Gliha

Doctoral Dissertations

”In this study, a laboratory testing program was developed to investigate the shear performance of fiber reinforced concrete beams. Long carbon fibers, to be included with a traditional fresh concrete mix, were developed and their shear performance was evaluated and compared to the performance and behavior of unreinforced concrete, traditionally reinforced concrete, and fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) with other fiber types.

The experimental program consisted of 30 large-scale beams tested for shear performance under monotonic loading. In addition to the large-scale beams, small-scale specimens were constructed of the same materials to correlate large-scale performances to ASTM C1609 testing and to …

Effects Of Milling Methods, Cooling Strategies And End-Mill Coatings On Machinability In High Speed End-Milling Of Inconel- 718 Using Carbide End-Mills, Paras Mohan Jasra

Doctoral Dissertations

“Inconel-718 superalloy is used extensively in aerospace and nuclear industries due to its excellent properties such as: high strength-to-weight ratio, ability to retain its properties at high temperature, high corrosion and creep resistance. However, Inconel-718 is characterized as a “difficult-to-cut metal”, because it poses severe problems during machining such as: high temperature at the cutting zone due to low thermal conductivity, hardening tendency at elevated temperature, high cutting forces, rapid tool wear and high chemical affinity with many cutting tools. Appropriate cooling strategies, milling methods, tool coatings and cutting speeds play important roles in addressing these problems. This research presents …

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr Jan 2018

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr

Doctoral Dissertations

"Recent efforts have demonstrated confinement in porous scaffolds at the nanoscale can alter the hydrogen sorption properties of metal hydrides, though not to an extent feasible for use in onboard hydrogen storage applications, proposing the need for a method allowing further modifications. The work presented here explores how the functionalization of nanoporous carbon scaffold surfaces with heteroatoms can modify the hydrogen sorption properties of confined metal hydrides in relation to non-functionalized scaffolds (FS). Investigations of nanoconfined LiBH4 and NaAlH4 indicate functionalizing the carbon scaffold surface with nitrogen can shift the activation energy of hydrogen desorption in excess of …

Critical Buckling And Post-Buckling Behavior Of Thin-Walled Liners Encased By Underground Pipelines In Saturated Soils, Zhaochao Li Jan 2018

Critical Buckling And Post-Buckling Behavior Of Thin-Walled Liners Encased By Underground Pipelines In Saturated Soils, Zhaochao Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study aims to investigate the structural stability of thin-walled liners encased in functionally-obsolete underground pipelines in saturated soil under external hydrostatic pressure, a concentrated load, temperature change or their combination, and develop a simplified circular arch model of thin-walled liners when not constrained by the pipelines. The friction and adhesion on the interface between a liner and its constraining surface (pipeline or grouting), and the pressure gradient on deeply-buried pipelines are neglected. The critical buckling load of elastic liners is analytically derived under a plane strain condition using the principle of minimum potential energy. The analytical solution is either …

Mechanical and material characterization tests were …

Computational Dynamics And Virtual Dragline Simulation For Extended Rope Service Life, Muhammad Wardeh Jan 2018

Computational Dynamics And Virtual Dragline Simulation For Extended Rope Service Life, Muhammad Wardeh

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dragline machinery is one of the largest equipment for stripping overburden materials in surface mining operations. Its effectiveness requires rigorous kinematic and dynamic analyses. Current dragline research studies are limited in computational dynamic modeling because they eliminate important structural components from the front-end assembly. Thus, the derived kinematic, dynamic and stress intensity models fail to capture the true response of the dragline under full operating cycle conditions. This research study advances a new and robust computational dynamic model of the dragline front-end assembly using Kane's method. The model is a 3-DOF dynamic model that describes the spatial kinematics and …

Exploring The Use Of A Time-Frequency Domain Technique For The Filtering Of Acoustic Emission/Microseismic Data, Charles Mborah, Maochen Ge, Zhigang Wang

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of acoustic emission/micro seismic (AE/MS) monitoring systems in mines is greatly impacted by background noise interference. Mine trucks/vehicles, fans, blasting and electrical spikes generate noise which negatively affect AE/MS signal quality. Using such datasets without filtering may lead to inaccurate determination of first arrivals and hence wrong source location. Also, data contaminated with noise makes manual identification and picking of the first arrivals impossible or difficult to achieve. This paper explored the use of stationary discrete wavelet transform as a filter to augment noise reduction on mine AE/MS data. The output of a test run on both noisy …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical resistance monitoring (ERM) has been used to study the effect of the z-binding yarns on the initial electrical resistance (ER) and its change of three architectures of 3D woven carbon fiber composites namely (orthogonal "ORT", layer-to-layer "LTL" and angle interlock "AI") when tested in tension. Specimens are loaded in on-axis "warp" and off-axis "45°" directions. In situ ERM is achieved using the four-probe technique. Monotonic and cyclic "load/unload" tests are performed to investigate the effect of piezo-resistivity and residual plasticity on resistance variation. The resistance increases for the off-axis loaded specimens (∼90%) is found to be higher than that …

Metabolism And Photolysis Of 2,4-Dinitroanisole In Arabidopsis, Hunter W. Schroer, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, Craig L. Just

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

New insensitive munitions explosives, including 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), are replacing traditional explosive compounds to protect soldiers and simplify transport logistics. Despite the occupational safety benefits of these new explosives, feasible strategies for cleaning up DNAN from soil and water have not been developed. Here, we evaluate the metabolism of DNAN by the model plant Arabidopsis to determine whether phytoremediation can be used to clean up contaminated sites. Furthermore, we evaluate the role of photodegradation of DNAN and its plant metabolites within Arabidopsis leaves to determine the potential impact of photolysis on the phytoremediation of contaminants. When exposed to DNAN for three …

Amplification Of Earthquake Ground Motions In Washington, Dc, And Implications For Hazard Assessments In Central And Eastern North America, Thomas L. Pratt, J. Wright Horton Jr., Jessica Munoz, Susan E. Hough, Martin C. Chapman, C. Guney Olgun

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The extent of damage in Washington, DC, from the 2011 MW 5.8 Mineral, VA, earthquake was surprising for an epicenter 130 km away; U.S. Geological Survey “Did-You-Feel-It” reports suggest that Atlantic Coastal Plain and other unconsolidated sediments amplified ground motions in the city. We measure this amplification relative to bedrock sites using earthquake signals recorded on a temporary seismometer array. The spectral ratios show strong amplification in the 0.7 to 4 Hz frequency range for sites on sediments. This range overlaps with resonant frequencies of buildings in the city as inferred from their heights, suggesting amplification at frequencies to …

Shockwave Interaction With A Cylindrical Structure, Phillip R. Mulligan Dec 2017

Shockwave Interaction With A Cylindrical Structure, Phillip R. Mulligan

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An increased understanding of the shockwave interaction with a cylindrical structure is the foundation for developing a method to explosively seal a pipe similar to the Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico. Shockwave interactions with a cylindrical structure have been a reoccurring focus of energetics research. Some of the most notable contributions of non-destructive tests are described in ``The Effects of Nuclear Weapons'' (Glasstone, 1962). The work presented by Glasstone examines shockwave interaction from a 20-megaton bomb with a cylindrical structure. However, the data is limited to a peak overpressure of less than 25 psi, requiring several miles …

Investigation On Ti6al4v-V-Cr-Fe-Ss316 Multi-Layers Metallic Structure Fabricated By Laser 3d Printing, Wei Li, Frank W. Liou, Joseph William Newkirk, Karen M. Brown Taminger, William J. Seufzer

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Joining titanium alloy and stainless steel is becoming an urgent need since their outstanding mechanical properties can be utilized integratedly. However, direct fusion joining of Ti6Al4V to SS316 can cause brittle Ti-Fe intermetallics which compromise join bonds’ mechanical properties. In this research, Laser 3D Printing was applied to explore a new Ti6Al4V to SS316 multi-metallic structure. A novel filler transition route was introduced (Ti6Al4V → V → Cr → Fe → SS316) to avoid the Ti-Fe intermetallics. Two experimental cases were performed for comparison to evaluate this novel route’s effect. In the first case, SS316 layer was directly deposited on …

There is a compelling need for the development of new sensory and neural prosthetic devices which are capable of more precise point stimulation. Current prosthetic devices suffer from the limitation of low spatial resolution due to the non-specific stimulation characteristics of electrical stimulation, i.e., the spread of electric fields generated. We present a visible light stimulation method for modulating the firing patterns of electrically excitable cells using surface plasmon resonance phenomena. In in-vitro studies using gold (Au) nanoparticle-coated nanoelectrodes, we show that this method (substrate coated with nanoparticles) has the potential for incorporating this new technology into neural stimulation prosthetics, …
