The compositions utilized for immobilization of high-level nuclear wastes (HLW) are controlled using glass property models to avoid the deleterious effects of crystallization in the high-level waste (HLW) vitrification melters. The type and size of the crystals that precipitate during melter operations (typically at 1150 °C) and idling (∼1000 °C) are significantly impacted by glass composition and thermal history. This study was conducted to measure the impact of melt composition and heat treatment temperature on crystal size and fraction. A matrix of 31 multi-component glasses canvasing the expected Hanford HLW compositional space was developed and the glasses fabricated, and heat …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The topography of electro spun fiber scaffolds modifies astrocytes toward in vivo-like morphologies and behaviors. However, little is known about how electro spun fiber diameter influences astrocyte behavior. In this work, aligned fibers with two distinct nanoscale fiber diameters (808 and 386 nm) were prepared, and the astrocyte response was measured over time. Astrocytes on the large diameter fibers showed significantly increased elongation as early as 2 h after seeding and remained significantly more elongated for up to 4 days compared to those on small diameter fibers. Astrocytes extending along larger diameter fibers were better equipped to support long neurite …

Random Subspace Projection For Predicting Biogeographical Ancestry, Tanjin Toma, Tayo Olufemi-Ajayi, Jeremy Dawson, Donald Adjeroh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Human biogeographical ancestry estimation using genomic information is an important problem with applications in population stratification, admixture mapping, forensic ancestry inference, and in healthcare. Various studies have proposed panels of ancestry informative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for distinguishing between widely separated continental populations. There has been limited investigation on identifying SNP panels for sub-continental ancestry prediction, especially given the difficult challenge of identifying SNP markers to distinguish closely associated sub-populations, for instance, within a continent. In this study, we propose an ancestry informative SNP selection algorithm exploiting the concept of random subspace projection using supervised learning. The proposed approach identifies …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the influence of process-induced shrinkage and subsequent annealing on the thermomechanical behavior of unidirectional laminates made of continuous glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (GFPP). We use two different industrial lamination processes: static hot-presses (SHP), and double-belt press (DBP) that are characterized by different cooling rates and pressure levels and most importantly, by the use of a closed mold in the case of SHP manufacturing. We measure the longitudinal and transverse shrinkage during the manufacturing and annealing processes using embedded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The SHP molding reveals much lower induced shrinkage in GFPP as compared to the DBP process, although …

Magnetic electro spun fibers are of interest for minimally invasive biomaterial applications that also strive to provide cell guidance. Magnetic electro spun fibers can be injected and then magnetically positioned in situ, and the aligned fiber scaffolds provide consistent topographical guidance to cells. In this study, magnetically responsive aligned poly-l-lactic acid electro spun fiber scaffolds were developed and tested for neural applications. Incorporating oleic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles significantly increased neurite outgrowth, reduced the fiber alignment, and increased the surface nano topography of the electro spun fibers. After verifying neuron viability on two-dimensional scaffolds, the system was tested as an …

3-Dimensional Path Planning For Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Yiheng Wang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Jan 2019

3-Dimensional Path Planning For Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Yiheng Wang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new algorithm for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) path planning in 3D space to visit multiple targets using Dubins curves. For a given target-sequence, the 3D path planning is usually solved by two steps: Step 1 projects 3D targets to the X-Y plane and designs a 2D path on this plane; Step 2 maps the 2D path into 3D via interpolation. The proposed new algorithm defines a local coordinate system (LCS) for each pair of targets and designs the 2D Dubins curve in the LCS, then uses the Euler's rotation transformation to convert the 2D dubins curve …

Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion Jan 2019

Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion

Masters Theses

"We live in the world of "aging infrastructures". In this environment, critical and heavily utilized infrastructure, i.e. ships, planes, bridges, etc., are operating at or beyond their designed age. Replacement is no longer an option and "retirement for cause" is the current approach to maintenance and replacement. Consequently, there is an ever-increasing demand for efficient and robust nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods that can determine the physical health of these structures. Large structures, which are primarily made of metals, either steel or aluminum, are susceptible to high-stress cracking and corrosion. Stress-induced cracks in heavily corroded steel, used in bridges, railroads, storage …

This report describes a software tool that calculates costs associated with the reconstruction of supply chain interdependent critical infrastructure in the advent of a catastrophic failure by either outside forces (extreme events) or internal forces (fatigue). This tool fills a gap between search and recover strategies of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (or FEMA) and construction techniques under full recovery. In addition to overall construction costs, the tool calculates reconstruction needs in terms of personnel and their required support. From these estimates, total costs (or the cost of each element to be restored) can be calculated. Estimates are based upon …

Magnetic Composite Biomaterials For Neural Regeneration, Jessica L. Funnell, Bailey Balouch, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nervous system damage caused by physical trauma or degenerative diseases can result in loss of sensory and motor function for patients. Biomaterial interventions have shown promise in animal studies, providing contact guidance for extending neurites or sustained release of various drugs and growth factors; however, these approaches often target only one aspect of the regeneration process. More recent studies investigate hybrid approaches, creating complex materials that can reduce inflammation or provide neuroprotection in addition to stimulating growth and regeneration. Magnetic materials have shown promise in this field, as they can be manipulated non-invasively, are easily functionalized, and can be used …

Real-Time Electrical Impedance Monitoring Of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Laminates Undergoing Quasi-Static Indentation, Khaled Almuhammadi, Arief Yudhanto, Gilles Lubineau Jan 2019

Real-Time Electrical Impedance Monitoring Of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Laminates Undergoing Quasi-Static Indentation, Khaled Almuhammadi, Arief Yudhanto, Gilles Lubineau

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laminated composites are vulnerable to damage from out-of-plane loading, particularly impact loading, and the incurred damage is often only detected by evaluating the post-impact condition of the composites. Real-time monitoring techniques are desirable for early detection of damage. Utilizing changes in the electrical properties of composites to track incurred damage is promising, but the interpretation of such measurements is still challenging. Here, an electro-mechanical system is introduced to understand how well we could detect mechanical degradation in carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates undergoing a quasi-static indentation (QSI) test, which is representative of an impact load. The system measures the in situ, …

An Experimental Approach That Assesses In-Situ Micro-Scale Damage Mechanisms And Fracture Toughness In Thermoplastic Laminates Under Out-Of-Plane Loading, H. Wafai, A. Yudhanto, G. Lubineau, R. Yaldiz, N. Verghese

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Studying the response of laminated composites under out-of-plane loading routinely involves mechanical tests, such as quasi-static indentation or impact. The phenomenology during these tests is so complex that it is difficult to identify different material properties related to each failure mechanism (damage mode). We aim at providing an experimental approach, which is practical and fast, for assessing the in-situ micro-scale damage mechanism and extracting the fracture toughness in thermoplastic laminates under out-of-plane loading. To this end, we developed a dedicated, micro-scale, three-point bending (micro-3PB) test fitted inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In a single experiment, we were able: (i) …
