A Learning Receiver For Communication In Three-Component Multipath Channels, Richard Paul Brueggemann Jan 1972

A Learning Receiver For Communication In Three-Component Multipath Channels, Richard Paul Brueggemann

Doctoral Dissertations

"An adaptive receiver is designed for transmissions through a time-varying multipath channel which may include both specular and diffuse components. The design is based on the theory of unsupervised learning machines and the receiver is a recursive structure which does not grow in complexity with each new observation, but is Bayes' optimal at each instant of time. The multipath medium is modelled as an aggregate of L conditionally independent transmission paths, each consisting of random and/or fixed reflections, and is identified in terms of three components: (1) indirect diffuse scatter, (2) indirect specular reflection, and (3) direct transmission. The channel …

Iicads--Integrated Interactive Computer Aided Design System, Archie Golden Lambert

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research has three goals. The first goal is to develop a software interface (supervisor) to support and control a variety of interactive subsystem modules; thus eliminating manual scheduling of interactive jobs. The second goal is to develop a common methodology for interactive subsystem design. The third goal is to develop a linear systems analysis package using the facilities developed under the first two goals. A software interface (supervisor) to support and control a variety of interactive subsystem modules is described. The supervisor operates under the constraints of a large multiprogramming variable task operating system as opposed to a time …

Synthesis And Properties Of Cadmium Manganese Ferrites, B. W. Jong Jan 1972

Synthesis And Properties Of Cadmium Manganese Ferrites, B. W. Jong

Doctoral Dissertations

"The formation sequence of (Cd,Mn,Fe) (Mn,Fe)₂O₄ from the individual oxides,x CdO + (1-x) MnCO₃ + α-Fe₂O₃,was found by X-Ray diffraction. Cd(Mn,Fe)₂O₄ was formed completely from CdO·Fe₂O₃ and CdO·Fe₂O₄ at 900°C and reacted with MnFe₂O₄ for 0 < x < 0.5 and with α-Fe₂O₃ for 0.5 < x < 1.0 to form a single phase of (Cd,Mn,Fe) (Mn,Fe)₂O₄ at 1150°C. This is the first time that the details involved in the formation sequence of CdMn-ferrite have been shown. A mixture of 0.5 CdO + 0.5 MnCO₃ + α-Fe₂O₃ was calcined at 900°C for 2 hrs forming Cd(Mn,Fe)₂O₄ with no Cd present in the other phases. Sintering was accomplished at 1150°C for 30 minutes forming a single phase of Cd₀.₅Mn₀.₅Fe₂O₄ with a bulk sintered density of 98-99% of the X-Ray density. The rate of changing density followed the relationship, p = K ln t + c, at temperatures between 1050°C and 1300°C. Magnetic properties of CdₓMn₁₋ₓFe₂O₄ were affected by composition x. A relationship, B = gx + h, was found between maximum magnetic flux density B and composition x at room temperature for 0 <̲ x <̲ 0.3. This was rationalized by a modification of Néel's theory. The maximum magnetic flux density decreased with increasing cadmium concentration for 0.3 < x <̲ 0.5. This decrease was attributed to the changing direction of the magnetic moment in the octahedral site sub-lattice according to the superexchange theory. No magnetic properties were observed due to the formation of a compensated antiferromagnetic phase for 0.5 < x <̲ 1.0. Maximum magnetic flux density increased with bulk density, while the coercive force decreased with the grain growth and the initial permeability increased with the bulk density and grain size. A stator core used for a-c electric motor application was formed by pre-sintering at 900⁰C for 2 hrs. Slots were then sawed with a tungsten carbide blade and final sintering was accomplished at 1150⁰C for 1 hr"--Abstract, pages iii-iv.

The Effect Of Impurities And Additives On The Electrowinning Of Zinc, Haruhisa Fukubayashi Jan 1972

The Effect Of Impurities And Additives On The Electrowinning Of Zinc, Haruhisa Fukubayashi

Doctoral Dissertations

"The effect of various impurities, commonly found in zinc electro-winning solutions, on the surface morphology of deposited zinc was investigated. Individual additions of the impurities Al, Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ge, Mn, Ni, Sb, Sn, Ti, PbO₂ , PbSO₄, and HCl were studied. In a few cases additives of animal glue, gum arabic, and Na₂SiO₃, were used individually or in combination, to determine their effect on the surface structure of the deposited zinc. Comparisons were then made with deposits from a pure electrolyte consisting of H₂SO₄ and Zn⁺², 200 and 65 g/l, respectively. The zinc was deposited on a …

Secondary Techniques For Increasing Fault Coverage Of Fault Detection Test Sequences For Asynchronous Sequential Networks, Lewis Ronald Hoover Jan 1972

Secondary Techniques For Increasing Fault Coverage Of Fault Detection Test Sequences For Asynchronous Sequential Networks, Lewis Ronald Hoover

Doctoral Dissertations

"The generation of fault detection sequences for asynchronous sequential networks is considered here. Several techniques exist for the generation of fault detection sequences on combinational and clocked sequential networks. Although these techniques provide closed solutions for combinational and clocked networks, they meet with much less success when used as strategies on asynchronous networks. It is presently assumed that the general asynchronous problem defies closed solution. For this reason, a secondary procedure is presented here to facilitate increased fault coverage by a given fault detection test sequence. This procedure is successful on all types of logic networks but is, perhaps, most …

An Exact Analysis Of Two-Dimensional Radiative Transfer In An Absorbing And Emitting Gray Medium, William F. Breig Jan 1972

An Exact Analysis Of Two-Dimensional Radiative Transfer In An Absorbing And Emitting Gray Medium, William F. Breig

Doctoral Dissertations

"The exact formulations for the radiative flux and the emissive power are presented for a two-dimensional, finite, planar, absorbing and emitting, gray medium in radiative equilibrium. Exact expressions are obtained for the medium subjected to the following types of boundary conditions: (1) cosine varying diffuse, (2) cosine varying collimated, (3) constant temperature strip, and (4) the strip illuminated by a uniform collimated flux. The solutions for the physically unrealistic cosine varying models are used to construct the solutions for the more practical finite strip models. The two-dimensional equations are reduced to one-dimensional equations by the method of separation of variables. …

Deformation And Fracture Of Concrete Under Uniaxial Impact Loading, Esteban Eulogio Miranda Jan 1972

Deformation And Fracture Of Concrete Under Uniaxial Impact Loading, Esteban Eulogio Miranda

Doctoral Dissertations

"Stress wave propagation and interaction in plain concrete leading up to spall fracture was investigated experimentally with a computer numerical analysis of the bar-geometry axial-impact loading. The critical normal fracture strain energy U and mechanical energy W criteria are proposed for the spatial and time dependence explanation of spallation in concrete. The energy criteria are special cases of a more generalized cumulative damage model of the form:....

Finite-difference analyses of the wave propagation and interactions in the split Hopkinson bar showed that early failure in brittle materials limits the application of the conventional method of analysis because equilibrium in the …

A Method For Generating Uts Assignments With An Iterative State Transition Algorithm, Dattatraya Govind Raj-Karne Jan 1972

A Method For Generating Uts Assignments With An Iterative State Transition Algorithm, Dattatraya Govind Raj-Karne

Doctoral Dissertations

"There is a lack of systematic procedures that can be used to find uni-code totally sequential (UTS) assignments from a flow table description of an asynchronous sequential circuit. Presented here is an iterative internal state assignment method. This method consists of three algorithms. The first generates a minimum variable initial assignment from a flow table description. The second tests the validity of this assignment by constructing minimum length transition paths without crossover and the third augments this assignment by adding an internal state variable in the event that all transition paths cannot be constructed without crossover. The second and the …

The Morphology Of Cellular Precipitation In Aluminum Rich Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Santiago Ibarra Jr. Jan 1972

The Morphology Of Cellular Precipitation In Aluminum Rich Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Santiago Ibarra Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"The morphology of cellular precipitation in Al-29.8wt%Ag alloy has been investigated in bulk specimens by transmission electron microscopy and in solution treated specimens by means of hot stage microscopy. Both cellular and general precipitation were observed to occur simultaneously in quench-aged and isothermally aged alloys. By studying the early stages of precipitation in the hot stage, the mechanism for the growth of cells in Al-Ag alloys was developed. According to this mechanism, the grain boundary allotriomorphs begin to form, the boundary then interacts with the allotriomorphs by bowing, and then either trailing precipitation forms on the allotriomorphs or new lamellae …

An Asynchronous Circuit Design Language System, Gregory Martin Bednar Jan 1972

An Asynchronous Circuit Design Language System, Gregory Martin Bednar

Doctoral Dissertations

"This paper presents a system for specifying the behavior of asynchronous sequential circuits. The system consists of a special purpose Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (ACDL), a translator and a flow table generation algorithm. The language includes many special features which permit quick and precise specification of terminal behavior. It is best suited for problems originating from a word description of the circuit's operation. The translator is written with the XPL Translator Writing System and is a syntax-directed compilation method. From the translated ACDL specifications, the flow table algorithm generates a primitive flow table which is the required input for the …

Determination Of Thermal Contact Resistance Between Metals Using A Pulse Technique, William Edward Stewart Jr. Jan 1972

Determination Of Thermal Contact Resistance Between Metals Using A Pulse Technique, William Edward Stewart Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation reports the results of an experimental and analytical investigation to determine the thermal contact resistance of several metal specimen pairs using a relatively new pulse technique. Metal specimens were aluminum 2024-T3, aluminum 6061-T6, aluminum 7075-T6, copper 110, stainless steel 304, molybdenum, and Armco iron. Thermal contact resistance was also determined for dissimilar metal specimen pairs of aluminum 6061-T6 - copper 110 and aluminum 7075-T6 - copper 110. Aluminum 7075-T6, copper 110, and stainless steel 304 specimens were tested to determine the variance of contact resistance with time after loading.

Specimens were circular cylindrical disks between .033 and .061 …

Synthesis techniques are presented for the realization of circuits containing distributed networks that can be used to simulate the partial differential equation for given boundary conditions. Several heat flow and vibrating string examples are included to illustrate the application of the …

Mass Transfer With Second-Order Chemical Reaction Inside Circulating Fluid Droplets, Roy James Brunson Jan 1972

Mass Transfer With Second-Order Chemical Reaction Inside Circulating Fluid Droplets, Roy James Brunson

Doctoral Dissertations

"The solution of a mathematical model is presented which describes mass transfer accompanied by a second-order chemical reaction inside a circulating, fluid sphere for the laminar flow region. The values for eight different mass transfer indices are presented as a function of the Peclet number, reaction number, diffusivity ratio, concentration ratio, and the dimensionless contact time. The results of this work are compared with the film and penetration theories for mass transfer with reaction as modified to apply inside a fluid sphere. This work corrects the three factors which limit the accuracy of applying previous theories to fluid spheres: geometrical …

Grain Boundary Diffusion In Ionic Crystals, Kulwant Singh Sabharwal Jan 1972

Grain Boundary Diffusion In Ionic Crystals, Kulwant Singh Sabharwal

Doctoral Dissertations

"The diffusion of ¹³¹I in single crystals and along the tilt grain boundaries of pure and calcium chloride doped (142±5 ppm) bicrystals of sodium chloride, grown by Czochralski technique, was investigated using a microtome sectioning technique. Results on bulk diffusion in pure NaCl agree well with the results of earlier investigators and are represented by the D=(504 cm²/sec)exp (-2.27 ev/kT). Enhanced diffusion of ¹³¹I is observed along the grain boundaries and the presence of the dopant lowers the grain boundary diffusivity over the entire temperature range of 430ºC - 570ºC studied in the present investigation. Thermal activation and electrical polarization …

Hydro-Thermal Generation Unit Commitment And Dispatch Using A Dynamic Programming Approach, Warren Dean Graham Jan 1972

Hydro-Thermal Generation Unit Commitment And Dispatch Using A Dynamic Programming Approach, Warren Dean Graham

Doctoral Dissertations

"The problem of thermal unit commitment is solved with dynamic programming. A practical example is given which solves the problem for a six generator system over a one year time span. This long range solution is used with a hydro optimization procedure to give an optimized hydro-thermal unit commitment solution. From this, a worth of hydro value is computed for each month, which may be used in the daily dispatching of thermal units and hydro. Applications of the program are also shown for aiding in generator maintenance scheduling and evaluating purchase power contracts with neighboring utilities. Error analysis is made …

Effects Of Cr-Plating And Environment On The Cracking Of Low Alloy Steels At High Temperatures, Robert C. Tooke Jan 1972

Effects Of Cr-Plating And Environment On The Cracking Of Low Alloy Steels At High Temperatures, Robert C. Tooke

Doctoral Dissertations

"The cracking of low alloy Cr-Mo-V steels under cyclic stress at 1000-1100°C. was studied using a specially designed test apparatus. The results obtained from specimens plated with hard chromium are compared to those of unplated specimens. Tests conducted in gas mixtures of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide showed that a high CO/CO2 ratio retards cracking in both plated and unplated specimens. Both external and internal oxidation are used to explain these results. Inherent microcracks in the hard chromium plating promoted cracking in all CO/CO2 environments. It was also found that these steels are severely embrittled in the presence …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Ambient And Heated Steady Flow And Intense Sound Levels On The Response Of Acoustic Filter Elements, Raymond H. Schaffart Jan 1972

An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Ambient And Heated Steady Flow And Intense Sound Levels On The Response Of Acoustic Filter Elements, Raymond H. Schaffart

Doctoral Dissertations

"The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of flow and finite amplitude waves on the response of acoustic elements. A further purpose was to evaluate the effects of elevated temperatures and cross-sectional dimensions on element performance. As an integral part of this work various laboratory techniques were explored for their suitability.

Empirical models for the acoustic impedance of side branch resonators were developed for the two operational modes, i.e., flow past the resonator and finite amplitude wave inputs. A description of the complex variation of the acoustic resistance of the resonator with flow past and variable …

A Monte Carlo Calculation Of Neutron Reflection From Various Curved Surfaces, Charles Jack Kalter Dec 1971

A Monte Carlo Calculation Of Neutron Reflection From Various Curved Surfaces, Charles Jack Kalter

Doctoral Dissertations

"Plane parallel neutron beams normally incident upon the curved surface of a solid reflector are studied with the Monte Carlo method. The geometries studied are cylindrical, parabolic, and hemispherical. It is shown that when the curved surface is cylindrical, a small "focusing effect" occurs in the reflected neutron beam. Parabolic and hemispherical surfaces do not show "focusing". A study of the factors which determine the spatial dependence of the reflected flux shows that the probability of emergence of a neutron, traveling a fixed distance from a point inside the reflector, depends upon the curvature of the surface. It is only …

Thermal Expansion Of Tungsten At Low Temperatures, Jayant S. Shah, Martin E. Straumanis Dec 1971

Thermal Expansion Of Tungsten At Low Temperatures, Jayant S. Shah, Martin E. Straumanis

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lattice parameters, thermal expansion coefficients, and Grüneisen parameters of tungsten are determined by an x-ray method in the temperature range of 180-40 K without the use of liquid gases. Lattice parameters are expressed as a function of temperature. Thermal-expansion coefficients decrease with temperature and show no anomaly in contrast to a hypothesis proposed by Featherston and Neighbours. Grüneisen parameters γ are decreasing with temperature in accordance with the theoretical predictions. © 1971 The American Institute of Physics.

Turbulent Interface Detector Using A Multiple Array Of Single Hot Wires, W. H. Schwarz Oct 1971

Turbulent Interface Detector Using A Multiple Array Of Single Hot Wires, W. H. Schwarz

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Intermittency circuits can be used to experimentally determine some of the properties of the turbulent interface that occur in turbulent shear flows. The signal I(x,t) is unity if turbulence is present at x and zero otherwise. Using the signals obtained from detectors at one or more points, certain statistical measures of the interface position Y(x,t) can be determined. Also using a linear array of conventional single hot-wire probes, the position of the interface can be detected continuously to within some small error. The intent of this h-detector is similar to the wave-height detector used in studies of sea surfaces. The …

Experiments In Magneto-Fluid-Mechanic Natural And Forced Heat Transfer From Horizontal Hot-Film Probes, P. F. Dunn, P. S. Lykoudis Oct 1971

Experiments In Magneto-Fluid-Mechanic Natural And Forced Heat Transfer From Horizontal Hot-Film Probes, P. F. Dunn, P. S. Lykoudis

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Experiments investigating magneto-fluid-mechanic effects on the heat transfer of quartz-coated hot-film probes are described. A standard heat transfer-velocity calibration curve is obtained by traversing a probe, whose axis is aligned horizontally, in the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the probe's axis. The working medium is mercury. Results indicate a significant reduction of the probe1s heat transfer in both the free and forced convection regimes.

Turbulence Measurements With The Split-Film Anemometer Probe, B. W. Spencer, B. G. Jones Oct 1971

Turbulence Measurements With The Split-Film Anemometer Probe, B. W. Spencer, B. G. Jones

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The newly developed split-film anemometer probe, manufactured by Thermo- Systems, Inc. of St. Paul, Minnesota, has been applied to the measurement of two-dimensional turbulence characteristics, including turbulent shear stress, in mixing layer and boundary layer shear flows. Probes of both 6-mil and 2- mil diameters were used which had the same physical dimensions as ordinary hot-film anemometer probes. The film on this sensor is split into two 170° elements resulting in two independent sensors. This enables the probe to detect vertical as well as axial components of the instantaneous velocity vector. It therefore serves the same purpose as an x-probe, …

The Unpolarized Electrode In A Pulsating Poiseuille Pipe Flow, B. M. Bergmann, T. H. Hodgson Oct 1971

The Unpolarized Electrode In A Pulsating Poiseuille Pipe Flow, B. M. Bergmann, T. H. Hodgson

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

In recent years three workers have described methods of measurement of unsteady flow quantities in water using unpolarized electrodes. Both Binder and Chuang have attempted measurements of turbulent velocity fluctuations, whereas Dumargue described a method of fluctuating pressure measurement.

In this paper, analysis and experiment were used to critically compare the previous workers' experiments. From measurements in an oscillating Poiseuille pipe flow it is concluded that an electrode positioned in the wall detects a signal with a phase angle of π/4 ahead of the fluctuating velocity as measured by a hot-film probe in the pipe center. This is exactly the …

Current Investigations Of Turbulent Shear, S. J. Kline, G. R. Offen, W. C. Reynolds Oct 1971

Current Investigations Of Turbulent Shear, S. J. Kline, G. R. Offen, W. C. Reynolds

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The paper covers first a short review of the history of research on turbulent shear and second a description of current experiments which may lead to further understanding.

The first portion categorizes the kinds of data which have been taken and discusses what can be learned from each. It then summarizes what is firmly established concerning the nature of turbulent shear, mostly from work of the past decade. A description of the several interpretations of these data under theoretic study by current leading researchers is then given.

The second portion of the paper discusses the extraordinarily difficult problem of identifying …

Interpretation Of Hot-Film Anemometer Response In A Non-Isothermal Field, W. E. Burchill, B. G. Jones Oct 1971

Interpretation Of Hot-Film Anemometer Response In A Non-Isothermal Field, W. E. Burchill, B. G. Jones

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

A new technique for interpretation of hot-film anemometer sensor response is described. This technique has been applied to simultaneous measurement of profiles of mean velocity, the three components of velocity vector fluctuation, and temperature fluctuation in non-isothermal pipe flow of water using multiple sensors. Sensors operated in the constant temperature mode (CTA) respond to both mean and fluctuating velocity and temperature. The influence of mean temperature gradient on CTA sensor response was eliminated by appropriate adjustment of the sensors' operating resistances as the temperature gradient was traversed. The adjustments were derived from analysis of linearized CTA sensor response. A sensor …

On Velocity Measurements In Non-Isothermal Turbulent Flows, R. Chevray, N. K. Tutu Oct 1971

On Velocity Measurements In Non-Isothermal Turbulent Flows, R. Chevray, N. K. Tutu

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Turbulent velocity measurements in non-isothermal flows are conventionally performed by constant current hot-wire anemometry. The procedure involved however is cumbersome, the output signals are nonlinear and more critically a continuous signal of velocity fluctuations is not provided. The method described here utilizes two orthogonal wires situated a fraction of a millimeter apart. The upstream wire is operated in a low overheat, constant-current compensated mode thus providing a signal proportional to temperature while the down-stream wire, practically unaffected by the thermal wake of the first wire is operated in the constant temperature mode. Compensation for the effects of local temperature on …

Near Wall Visual Measurements In Drag Reducing Flow, H. C. Hershey Oct 1971

Near Wall Visual Measurements In Drag Reducing Flow, H. C. Hershey

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

A review of several explanations for the mechanisms of drag reduction is presented. Visual studies of ordinary liquids are reviewed briefly, and visual studies in drag reducing flow are discussed. Finally, current work at Ohio State University is described where high speed motion pictures will be taken of drag reducing flow using the technique of Brodkey and Corino.
