A Sensitive Temperature Measuring System, Larry Dean Morris Jan 1972

A Sensitive Temperature Measuring System, Larry Dean Morris

Masters Theses

"A sensitive temperature measuring system, providing an analog output proportional to sensor temperature, has been designed for use in the wall temperature control system of a cloud simulation chamber. A platinum resistance element is the sensor, and a precision wirewound resistor is the reference in a bridge circuit which uses four low cost operational amplifiers arranged to provide two precision 1000 Hz current sources. Problems with an initial bridge amplifier design were corrected in the final design by the use of a low Q bandpass amplifier for the bridge signal followed by a phase detector and an output low pass …

High Speed Magnetically Supported Vehicles For Reducing Transportation's Degradations Of The Environment, Pravinchandra Shukla

Masters Theses

"The development of new techniques for higher speed transportation is desirable to satisfy the environmental, conservation, and economic requirements of society. Some of the important factors are presented for developing magnetically supported vehicles. A new method for improving the ratio of lift force to drag force is suggested and discussed. An application of the new technique to vehicles that would ride on a carpet of magnetism and would operate with less waste of energy is suggested "--Abstract, page ii.

The Morphology Of The Cellular Precipitation Reaction In A Pb-3.0 Wt% Sn Alloy, Federico Sequeda Osorio Jan 1972

The Morphology Of The Cellular Precipitation Reaction In A Pb-3.0 Wt% Sn Alloy, Federico Sequeda Osorio

Masters Theses

"The complete development of the cellular precipitation structure at selected grain boundaries in a Pb-3.0 wt% Sn alloy during aging at 34°C and 23°C was investigated by light microscopy. The cellular structure in this alloy consists of lamellae of solute depleted lead solid solution and lamellae of ß tin precipitate. The cellular precipitation reaction begins by local migration of a grain boundary with concomitant grain boundary precipitation of ß tin. The grain boundary bows around the ß tin grain boundary precipitates which then begin to lengthen in the direction of boundary migration thus forming the precipitate lamellae of the cell. …

Design And Construction Of A Drop Generator For Use In A Vertical Wind Tunnel, Danny Ray Conner Jan 1972

Design And Construction Of A Drop Generator For Use In A Vertical Wind Tunnel, Danny Ray Conner

Masters Theses

"A drop generator, based on the principle of a vibrating capillary, was designed and built for use in the UMR vertical atmosphere wind tunnel. The drop generator worked very well on a test stand where it was firmly supported, but was not consistent when tested in the wind tunnel. Vibration of the wind tunnel walls and a slight turbulence near the forward edge of the generator caused an oscillation in the position of the stream of drops. The oscillation resulted in some of the drops hitting the edge of the collector cup, where the drops would accumulate until a large …

Computer Simulation Of The Primary Recoil Spectra And Damage Cross Section Of Fe₃Al Using Endf/B Ii Data, Daniel Willard Smith Jan 1972

Computer Simulation Of The Primary Recoil Spectra And Damage Cross Section Of Fe₃Al Using Endf/B Ii Data, Daniel Willard Smith

Masters Theses

"A computer program, using Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF/B II) information, was used to develop energy-exchange kernels which delineate the energy transfer probabilities between neutrons and Fe3Al lattice atoms. The kernels combine all available information on elastic and inelastic scattering contained in the ENDF/B II data.

The computer program used to generate the primary recoil spectra is SAKI, a modified version of RICE (1). SAKI is designed to calculate energy-exchange probabilities in any binary alloy as well as damage cross sections and optimum cutoff energies for use in comparing displacement effects in different reactor spectra."--Abstract, page ii.

Laboratory Studies Using Diffused Oxygen And Air For Hypolimnion Reaeration, Chin-Ming Pai

Masters Theses

"The purposes of this research were to study the oxygen transfer rates and the oxygen transfer efficiencies of different types of aerators using different sources of oxygen in different types of water bodies, and to evaluate the number of diffusers required to be installed in a selected lake for hypolimnion aeration.

The experiments were conducted using a specially designed column. Four types of aerators, including a cylindrical stone diffuser, a spherical stone diffuser, and 2 ceramic diffusers (types A and B) which differed in pore size, were utilized as the aerators. The water bodies selected for the studies were Rolla …

A Study Of The Effect Of Drilled Holes On The Concentration Of Elastic Stresses Around A Notch, Glenn Michael Kmecz Jan 1972

A Study Of The Effect Of Drilled Holes On The Concentration Of Elastic Stresses Around A Notch, Glenn Michael Kmecz

Masters Theses

"Hole drilling as a method for improving the toughness of notch weakened tensile specimens is investigated by means of a photoelastic technique. Tests were performed on 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% notch depth specimens machined from PSM-1 photoelastic material. The basic criteria for success was no increase in the elastic stress concentration factor. The photoelastic results were verified by a finite element stress analysis of the 60% notch depth specimens. Comparison of the experimental and numerical results provide conclusive proof that no increase in the elastic stress concentration factor occurs when proper positioning of the drilled holes is accomplished"--Abstract, page …

Drag Reduction On Non-Ionic Surfactants In Aqueous Systems, Jen-Lin Chang Jan 1972

Drag Reduction On Non-Ionic Surfactants In Aqueous Systems, Jen-Lin Chang

Masters Theses

"The use of polyoxyethylene alcohol non-ionic surfactants as drag reducing additives in aqueous systems was investigated. Significant drag reduction was obtained with suitable combinations of one percent Alfonic 1214 and salts at 30°C such that the surfactant was near or above its upper critical solubility temperature. Maximum drag reduction was observed at the cloud point. Relative viscosity values also peaked at this point. No upper critical shear stress was attained up to wall shear stresses of 2,000 dynes/cm2 with one percent Alfonic 1214 solutions at their cloud points.

At a fixed temperature, the salt concentration required to reach the …

Effect Of Glass Aggregates Upon Abrasiveness Of Asphaltic Mixtures, Dwarka Prasad Gupta Jan 1972

Effect Of Glass Aggregates Upon Abrasiveness Of Asphaltic Mixtures, Dwarka Prasad Gupta

Masters Theses

"The utilization of glass as an aggregate in asphaltic concrete pavements has been suggested as a means for reusing the increasing amounts of waste glass generated each year in the United States. Recent studies have shown that asphaltic mixtures containing glass aggregates can be designed to meet Marshall requirements for stability, flow and void content but the abrasiveness of mixtures containing glass aggregates had not been investigated. The objectives of this study were to develop a laboratory wear testing apparatus and compare the abrasiveness of asphaltic concrete mixtures using glass aggregates with the abrasiveness of mixtures using several different conventional …

A Study Of Right Turn On Red At Signalized Intersections, Ronald Duane Rains Jan 1972

A Study Of Right Turn On Red At Signalized Intersections, Ronald Duane Rains

Masters Theses

"Traffic engineers have discussed the controversial subject of allowing drivers to make a right-turn-on-red (R.T.O.R.) for many years. There have been many strong points given for and against allowing this movement.

Within this paper R.T.O.R. is discussed and conclusions are drawn for a research of literature and questionnaire survey.

Questionnaires were sent to ninety-three cities and all fifty states. Many valuable unwritten facts and opinions were received from the seventy city and thirty-six state traffic engineers that completed and returned the questionnaires.

It was determined that 63.8% of the states replying and 64.3% of the cities are presently utilizing R.T.O.R. …

Kinetic Analysis Of The Radiation Polymerization Of Methyl Methacrylate–Kaolin Clay Composites, J. J. Beeson, Kenneth G. Mayhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the first of a two‐part series, a kinetic study has been made on the effects of gamma rays (60Co) in air and inert gas on the polymerization of a 50:50 weight‐mixture methyl methacrylate (MMA)–kaolin clay system. The effect of dose rate (7.35–24.9 rads/sec), temperature (25° to 75°C), and total dose on the percentage conversion of monomer to polymer was studied. The rate of formation of polymer at 25°C in the composite system was found to be faster when compared to a bulk MMA system at the same dose rate. This acceleration showed that the clay had a catalytic effect …

Dissolution Potentials And Activation Energies Of Insb Single Crystals, Martin E. Straumanis, Lih Da Hu Jan 1972

Dissolution Potentials And Activation Energies Of Insb Single Crystals, Martin E. Straumanis, Lih Da Hu

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The rest (or corrosion) and dissolution potentials of InSb single crystals in HC1 were determined. There is no potential difference (within error limits) between the inverse {111} faces in pure HC1. A difference of up to 44 mV and more develops as soon as the InSb electrode is anodically dissolved. The potential becomes less noble in the sequence In{111}, {100}, {110}, Sb{111}. The Tafel relationship is observed over three decades of current density. With additions of FeCl3, FeCl2, K3Fe(CN)6, K4Fe(CN)6, H2C4H4O6 to 2N HC1, the anodic potentials of both inverse {111} faces are shifted to more active values; the e'H …

Irradiation Enhanced Decomposition Of A Nickel-Carbon Solid Solution, B. L. Shriver, Manfred Wuttig Jan 1972

Irradiation Enhanced Decomposition Of A Nickel-Carbon Solid Solution, B. L. Shriver, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This investigation was performed to determine the effects of room temperature neutron irradiation on the distribution of carbon in a nickel-0.3 wt.% carbon alloy. The experiment consisted of comparing the amount of carbon in solid solution and the internal stresses of both unirradiated and irradiated (1013 fn-cm-2 < ΦF < 1018 fn-cm-2) samples following isochronal anneals between 100 and 1200°C by using the magnetic Dis accommodation technique. The results indicate that the amount of carbon remaining in solid solution decreases with increasing neutron dose. At temperatures below 200°C this is due to the trapping of carbon by mobile irradiation-produced defects. Between 200 and 600°C the formation of metastable carbides is enhanced by the presence of irradiation-produced defects. No differences are observed in irradiated and unirradiated samples above 600°C. © 1972.

Activation Volumes Of Carbon Diffusion In Fcc Iron-Nickel Alloys, J. Keiser, Manfred Wuttig Jan 1972

Activation Volumes Of Carbon Diffusion In Fcc Iron-Nickel Alloys, J. Keiser, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Dis accommodation technique was used to determine the activation volume of carbon diffusion, ΔV, in six fcc iron-nickel alloys. Measurements were made at temperatures ranging from 68 to 90 °C and pressures up to 6 kbar on samples having a nickel content between 31 and 63 at.%. A maximum activation volume of 3.9 cm3/mole was found at 34 at.% nickel. The compositional dependence of ΔV is satisfactorily reproduced by a magnetic-energy continuum model in which it is assumed that the activation free energy of diffusion is essentially ferromagnetic in origin. © 1972 The American Physical Society.

Low Temperature Lattice Parameters And Expansion Coefficients Of Ai2au And Lif Gruneisen Constants Of Lif, Martin E. Straumanis, Jayant S. Shah

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is no difference in the thermal expansion behavior of an intermetallic compound (Al2Au) and of an ionic (LiF), except in the magnitude of the expansion coefficients, which for both compounds upon cooling below 40°K approach zero. The lattice parameters of the two compounds mentioned decrease uniformly and without anomalies with lowering the temperature, approaching a constant value below 40°K. The a–T relationship between 40 and 180° is given in form of equations. A pump working on the Joule‐Thomson principle was used for cooling. The GRÜNEISEN parameter, γ, of LiF between 40 and 180°K is a constant, contrary to theoretical …

Effects Of Cold Working Under Pressure On Subsequent Yield, J. G. Hoeg, Robert L. Davis Jan 1972

Effects Of Cold Working Under Pressure On Subsequent Yield, J. G. Hoeg, Robert L. Davis

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method utilizing high pressure fluid environments is described whereby a three-dimensional subsequent yield surface was determined for 304 stainless steel cylindrical parent specimens of this material were prestrained in axial compression under fluid pressure and then small sub specimens were sectioned from these parent specimens. Finite element techniques were used to optimize the parent specimen size so that a zone of uniform axial stress woidd result during the prestraining. Longitudinal strains in this zone were monitored during the prestraining and the subspecimens were cut from this region in a manner that did not allow the machining to appreciably affect …

An Analytical Study Of A Confined Viscous Vortex, David Edward Crow Jan 1972

An Analytical Study Of A Confined Viscous Vortex, David Edward Crow

Doctoral Dissertations

"A composite solution for the flow field of a three dimensional, incompressible laminar, viscous vortex confined inside a conical converging nozzle is presented. This model is used to study the strong mainstream boundary layer interaction that occurs in confined vortex flows. The confined vortex flow field is divided into mainstream and boundary layer regions. A particular class of solutions of the general equations of motion is used to represent the vortex flow in the mainstream region. That is, the tangential velocity in the mainstream region is assumed to be of the form W = T(e)/R. Velocity and pressure profiles from …

The Use Of Shaped Explosive Charges To Investigate Permeability, Penetration, And Fracture Formation In Coal, Dolomite And Plexiglas, Calvin J. Konya Jan 1972

The Use Of Shaped Explosive Charges To Investigate Permeability, Penetration, And Fracture Formation In Coal, Dolomite And Plexiglas, Calvin J. Konya

Doctoral Dissertations

"The concentration of methane gas which exists in the exhaust air from a coal mine is critical. It can be controlled by dilution of the gas with fresh air or by the regulation of the rate of methane emission into the mine workings. Degasification techniques which control the emission rate are currently being developed. The use of shaped charges to initiate fractures in coal and increase the gas flow rate was the object of this research. The three areas of investigation were: 1) permeability changes in coal models after fracturing with shaped charge jets, 2) fracture formation in coal and …

The Electrochemical Reduction Of Fumaric Acid On Hg-Bi Cathodes, Chen Hwei Chi Jan 1972

The Electrochemical Reduction Of Fumaric Acid On Hg-Bi Cathodes, Chen Hwei Chi

Doctoral Dissertations

"The electrochemical reduction of fumaric acid was studied on Hg, Hg/1%Bi amalgam, and Bi at 60ºC in acidic solutions of various pH ranging from 0.3 to 3.7. The fumaric acid was reduced to succinic acid with high efficiency on each electrode. The steady state kinetic parameters included Tafel slopes of ca. 2.3 RT/F and first order concentration dependences for both undissociated fumaric acid and H⁺. Transient measurements indicated low coverages of adsorbed fumaric acid and no adsorbed hydrogen species in the potential region of the reaction. A reaction mechanism is proposed which involves a chemical rate determining step between an …

Probabilistic Models For Construction Estimating And Bidding, James E. Spooner Jan 1972

Probabilistic Models For Construction Estimating And Bidding, James E. Spooner

Doctoral Dissertations

"Two probabilistic models are offered as a means for quantitatively determining contingency in a lump-sum bid. The first model is based on the isolated project and requires subjective evaluation of probabilities associated with the individual elements of the estimate. Contingency is defined as a function of the standard deviation of project field costs. Procedures are developed to obtain the variance of the total field cost from three-value estimates of the primary quantities. The second model considers the business as a stochastic process with an initial risk reserve and a positive risk loading, and contingency in this model is a function …

Modal Truncation Of Substructures Used In Vibration Analysis, Suresh Kumar Tolani Jan 1972

Modal Truncation Of Substructures Used In Vibration Analysis, Suresh Kumar Tolani

Doctoral Dissertations

"The objective of this study is to describe in a unified manner a group of structural dynamics analyses using the substructures technique. An additional effort is to provide a consistent basis for the selection of substructure principal modes as required by this method. Substructure principal mode frequency roots and strain energy are two criteria evaluated for the selection of substructure principal modes. System eigenvalues and system strain energy are investigated for the comparison of results in the principal modes. System strain energy should provide more rational results since it is proportional to the stress times the strain in the system …

The Effect And Compensation Of Time-Base Perturbations In Analog Recording Systems, Clifford D. Skouby Jan 1972

The Effect And Compensation Of Time-Base Perturbations In Analog Recording Systems, Clifford D. Skouby

Doctoral Dissertations

"The mean square error between recorded and reproduced signals is used as an error measure to determine the effects of time-base perturbations on an analog singal. The mean square error caused by time-base perturbations is shown to be proportional to the product of the square of the signal bandwidth and the time-base error variance for the case of low pass signal. When the signal is band pass, there is shown to be an additional error term which is proportional to the square of the signal center frequency and the time-base error variance.

Calculations are also carried out to determine the …
