A Comparison And Analysis Of Detection Methods For The Measurement Of Production In A Boundary Layer, G. R. Offen, S. J. Kline Jan 1973

A Comparison And Analysis Of Detection Methods For The Measurement Of Production In A Boundary Layer, G. R. Offen, S. J. Kline

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Two hot films and dye visualizations have been employed, simultaneously, in a turbulent boundary layer to explore the relations among visual observations and five kinds of detection methods using conditional sampling. The results show that all methods correlate positively with each other, but not with high enough values of correlation coefficients to indicate true correspondence between any two thus far studied. Moreover, none of the detection methods devised to date indicate a plateau in number of events as a function of trigger threshold.

The results also provide additional information on several other matters: (i) the relationship of outward motions from …

An Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Viscous Sublayer For Turbulent Tube Flow, Lindon C. Thomas, H. L. Greene Jan 1973

An Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Viscous Sublayer For Turbulent Tube Flow, Lindon C. Thomas, H. L. Greene

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Flush-mounted anemometer probes have been used to further study characteristics of the viscous sublayer for both Newtonian and drag reducing solutions, with particular emphasis given to low Reynolds number turbulent tube flow. Experimental measurements for the mean frequency of bursting or renewal within the wall region are compared with theoretical predictions obtained on the basis of the surface renewal and penetration model.

Both theory and experiment taken together suggest that the effect of the mean axial pressure gradient on the viscous sublayer becomes important for the deeper molecular penetration associated with low Reynolds number flow. Also, a pronounced lessening of …

On The Interpretation Of The Output Of Hot-Film Anemometers And A Scheme Of Dynamic Compensation For Water Temperature Variation, J. Tan-Atichat, H. M. Nagib, J. W. Pluister Jan 1973

On The Interpretation Of The Output Of Hot-Film Anemometers And A Scheme Of Dynamic Compensation For Water Temperature Variation, J. Tan-Atichat, H. M. Nagib, J. W. Pluister

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Using a special calibration tunnel developed during the course of this study, the static and dynamic response of several kinds of commercially available hot-film probes with single and multiple sensors of the cylindrical-fiber type are examined. The effects of different parameters, including those of the anemometer bridge, on the output and performance of the probes are evaluated. In particular, the consequences of variations in water temperature on the hot-film anemometer output are determined. The results reveal a large effect of the water temperature on the calibration curves (in an extreme case a change in temperature of only 5.5°F can result …

Use Of The Split-Film Sensor To Measure Turbulence In Water Near A Wall, Paul H. Blinco, V. A. Sandborn Jan 1973

Use Of The Split-Film Sensor To Measure Turbulence In Water Near A Wall, Paul H. Blinco, V. A. Sandborn

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Because of its small size and unique design, the 0.15-mm diameter split-film sensor has many significant advantages over the conventional X-configuration hot-film sensor and the yaw-wire technique for measuring turbulence near a wall. Calibration of the split- film sensor indicates that the magnitude and yaw angle of the instantaneous velocity vector is dependent only on the sum and ratio of the sensor outputs, respectively. Results of limited measurements of the longitudinal and vertical turbulence intensities and Reynolds stress for hydraulically smooth, free surface flows are presented. Digital time series of the split-film outputs revealed the following information: (1) the split-film …

Measurements Of Pulsating Turbulent Water Flow In A Tube, S.-Z. Lu, R. J. Nunge, F. F. Erian, M. Mohajery Jan 1973

Measurements Of Pulsating Turbulent Water Flow In A Tube, S.-Z. Lu, R. J. Nunge, F. F. Erian, M. Mohajery

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The experimental method associated with obtaining meaningful information from the hot-film anemometer signals in fully developed pulsating turbulent flow where the pulsations are sinusoidal in time is discussed. The results of a number of experiments in water reveal the nature of the longtime and short-time average velocity and pressure. Velocity measurements between 0.95 radii and the centerline demonstrate that the long-time average velocity distribution is coincident with that for steady turbulent flow at the same Reynolds number. Also, no significant differences between the longtime average axial pressure drop in the pulsating and steady flows were noted, although this requires further …

Intermittency And Structure Of A Jet Exhausting Into A Stratified Fluid, Alan Brandt, H. E. Gilreath, C. L. Yates, C. R. Walton Jan 1973

Intermittency And Structure Of A Jet Exhausting Into A Stratified Fluid, Alan Brandt, H. E. Gilreath, C. L. Yates, C. R. Walton

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

This preliminary study of the mechanism by which local turbulent regions generate internal gravity waves in a stably stratified fluid is based on comparisons of the visual and hot-film- anemometer observations of a jet exhausting into a stratified fluid with those for a jet exhausting into a homogeneous medium. The stratified environment limits the growth of the mean jet boundary, or from another point of view, inhibits the vertical motion of the instantaneous turbulent/non-turbulent interface. The visual and non-conditional statistical averages agree with expectations and with previous measurements in stratified turbulent wakes. Application of a standard criterion to determine the …

Diaphragm Braced Thin-Walled Open Sections And Design Of Wall Studs, Amir Simaan, Teoman Peköz Jan 1973

Diaphragm Braced Thin-Walled Open Sections And Design Of Wall Studs, Amir Simaan, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel wall studs generally are I, Z or channel shaped with or without stiffening lips, and with webs perpendicular to the plane of the wall. Because of their configuration and dimensions, these sections are quite unstable by themselves. However, the stability and, hence, load-carrying capacity of such studs are increased substantially once they are connected to the wallboard material. The main function of the wallboard is that of enclosure, but it serves also as a bracing system for the studs. Gypsum board, vegetable fiberboard, tempered board or plywood are commonly used wallboard materials. Such boards are connected to …

Conference Proceedings Of The 3rd Biennial Symposium On Turbulence In Liquids, University Of Missouri--Rolla Jan 1973

Conference Proceedings Of The 3rd Biennial Symposium On Turbulence In Liquids, University Of Missouri--Rolla

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The Third Biennial Symposium on Turbulence in Liquids showed further progress in the investigator's ability to measure turbulence parameters and in the general understanding of turbulence. The most impressive advances in measurement seemed to be the ability to measure deeper into the turbulent boundary layer in order to obtain profiles over the entire turbulence production region and the rapid development of conditioned-sampling techniques for studying hypotheses for mechanisms.

Dynamic Response Of Forced Convective Heat Transfer From Cylinders To Low Prandtl Number Fluids, D. G. Malcolm, V. Verma Jan 1973

Dynamic Response Of Forced Convective Heat Transfer From Cylinders To Low Prandtl Number Fluids, D. G. Malcolm, V. Verma

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The present paper can be viewed as an extension of the work of Lim and Sleicher (9). They evaluated the frequency response of the heated element submerged in liquid metal by a perturbation method for Peclet numbers of up to 0.4. Velocity fluctuations were assumed small and second-order perturbations neglected. The Oseen approximation was made to the velocity field. Here the velocity configuration has been approximated to that of potential flow and the convection equation has been solved numerically with the aid of a digital computer. The potential flow approximation, as compared with the Oseen approximation, is reasonable over a …

Legendre Coefficients For Series Solution Of The Orientation Distribution Function For Ellipsoidal Macromolecules In Two-Dimensional Laminar Flow, Myrne R. Riley Jan 1973

Legendre Coefficients For Series Solution Of The Orientation Distribution Function For Ellipsoidal Macromolecules In Two-Dimensional Laminar Flow, Myrne R. Riley

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The double refraction and viscosity of a suspension of asymmetrical colloidal particles subject to continuous laminar flow vary with the orientation distribution of the suspended particles produced by the shearing field and Brownian motion. Recursion formulas are developed for the Legendre coefficients of the series solution of the orientation distribution function for a suspension subject to two-dimensional laminar flow, thus, extending the works of Peterlin, Wayland, and Scheraga. © 1973.

Inertial Navigation Performance Improvement Realized By The Technique Of Interrupted Alignment, Ralph E. Herndon Jan 1973

Inertial Navigation Performance Improvement Realized By The Technique Of Interrupted Alignment, Ralph E. Herndon

Masters Theses

"Present on-aircraft ground alignment gyro bias methods can basically be categorized as (1) periodic maintenance performed by the ground crew, (2) pre-flight calibration requiring a two-position gyro compass alignment or (3) optimal filter estimation of the north gyro bias error.

This thesis discussion presents an interrupted alignment method that allows adequate level axes gyro bias correction without the restrictions associated with a conventional two-position gyrocompass alignment (i.e., a minimum time for bias calibration on a steady aircraft). The interrupted alignment technique allows the pilot to select the navigate mode at any point during gyrocompass and reselect the align mode at …

Tilt-Table Alignment For Inertial-Platform Maintenance Without A Surveyed Site, Gordon E. Carlson, Max E. Bott Jan 1973

Tilt-Table Alignment For Inertial-Platform Maintenance Without A Surveyed Site, Gordon E. Carlson, Max E. Bott

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for aligning the rotary tilt table for an inertial-platform maintenance facility without surveying the site is analyzed and evaluated. The method utilizes multiple measurements of the tilt-table azimuth alignment error with different inertial platforms to determine a best estimate of the alignment error. Error analysis indicates that useful facility performance can be obtained with only a small number of measurements. The tilt-table alignment accuracy can be improved as more measurements of the alignment error are made during normal facility operation. © 1973, IEEE. All rights reserved.

Considerations In The Design Of A Network Of Minicomputers, Hardy J. Pottinger Jan 1973

Considerations In The Design Of A Network Of Minicomputers, Hardy J. Pottinger

Doctoral Dissertations

"The advantages of a network consisting of a number of minicomputers coupled to a large time shared computer are described. This type of network is very useful in the areas of data acquisition, real time control of experiments, and front-end processing for computer graphics.

Problems associated with the development of a network of this type, various possible solutions, and the trade-offs involved are presented. These problems are classified into two categories: the interface between the network and the central computing facility, and the interface between the remote sites and the rest of the network.

The design constraints, rationale, and implementation …

Penetration In Granite By Jets From Shaped-Charge Liners Of Six Materials, Ronald R. Rollins, George Bromley Clark, H. N. Kalia Jan 1973

Penetration In Granite By Jets From Shaped-Charge Liners Of Six Materials, Ronald R. Rollins, George Bromley Clark, H. N. Kalia

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new application of theory for three-dimensional collapse of conical liners shows why the two-dimensional analysis may offer a good approximation. Shaped-charge design parameters and rock target properties were investigated to determine their effects on penetration and breakage. Several metals, liner thicknesses, cone angles and standoff ranges for each were investigated. Effective standoff is greater for aluminum than more dense metals. Jets from the 60° monel, brass and steel liners gave the deepest penetration in granite. Jets from copper and brass liners gave equal penetration for 42° apex angles. Liners containing zinc produced small slugs or none at all. The …

Polymers From The Hydrolysis Of Tetraethoxysilane, B. W. Peace, Kenneth G. Mayhan, J. F. Montle

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane was studied under various solvent and temperature conditions. A method was developed by which reaction rates can be measured even in the presence of alcohols other than ethanol. The structures of the resulting polymers were dependent upon the reaction conditions employed, those formed at high temperature being highly condensed materials. © 1973.

Nonequilibrium Structure Of Argon Shock Waves, Harlan F. Nelson Jan 1973

Nonequilibrium Structure Of Argon Shock Waves, Harlan F. Nelson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This theoretical study investigates the influence of (1) the nonequilibrium excited state population in the relaxation region and (2) line radiation in the precursor on shock wave structure by considering strong shock waves propagating at Mach 18 and 24 into a theoretical argon-like gas at a pressure of 1 cm Hg and a temperature of 300°K. The argon atom is modeled as having two bound states plus a continuum, and the calculations include finite atom-atom and electron-atom collisional ionization and excitation rates as well as continuum and line radiation. The electron gas is allowed to be at a different temperature …

Numerical Calculation Of The Currents In Bent Wire Antennas, Min Ho Kang Jan 1973

Numerical Calculation Of The Currents In Bent Wire Antennas, Min Ho Kang

Masters Theses

"The current distribution for bent dipole antennas is numerically calculated by using a digital computer. A delta-gap at the center is assumed for the drive. Several different bend-angles are considered including the cases of the straight wire and the inverted-L. The total length of the wire considered is λ/2 while the ratio of the bent portion over the vertical portion is varied. The method of solution is based on Mei's integral equation and the method of moments. The use of Mei's integral equation eliminates the need for the application of the boundary condition at the point of bending. For …

Formation And Densification Of Cadmium Manganese Ferrite, B. W. Jong, P. D. Ownby Jan 1973

Formation And Densification Of Cadmium Manganese Ferrite, B. W. Jong, P. D. Ownby

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Formation of Ni-ferrite, Mn-ferrite, NiZn-ferrite, Zn-ferrite and Mg-ferrite have been investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis. Jander's diffusion equation described the data from these investigations over a portion of the temperature ranges studied. However, the reaction mechanisms and sequences involved in the formation of mixed ferrites have not been well defined in the literature. The purposes of this investigation were: ( 1) To further the understanding of the formation of CdMnferrite by studying first the kinetics of the formation of Cd-ferrite and Cd-manganite, which provides a basis for understanding the details of the mixed CdMn-ferrite reaction and to obtain the optimum …

An Improved Single Flight Technique For Radar Stereo, Gordon E. Carlson Jan 1973

An Improved Single Flight Technique For Radar Stereo, Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An improved technique for obtaining stereo radar image pairs is described. The technique uses a unique combination of two different radar beam pattern characteristics. The resulting stereo radar images are illuminated from very nearly the same aircraft position which results in radar shadow and back-scatter characteristics which are very similar and in improved image registration possibilities. The reduction in illumination angle and aircraft position differences is shown to be nearly an order of magnitude or more when compared with a previously proposed single flight technique which used two vertical fan beam patterns at different azimuth angles. As a related sidelight …

Performance Degradation Due To Specular Multipath Intersymbol Interference, G. H. Smith, David R. Cunningham, Rodger E. Ziemer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Plots of performance degradation are used to compare the effects of fading and intersymbol interference in a two-component specular multipath digital communications channel. Similar plots are then used to compare two practical receivers designed to combat the interference. Degradation plots are shown to allow easy identification of each receiver's range of usefulness, as well as identification of variance bounds demanded of channel parameter estimates which the receivers require. Optimal Synthesis Of Active Distributed Rc Low-Pass Filters, Robert Iman Egbert Jan 1973

Optimal Synthesis Of Active Distributed Rc Low-Pass Filters, Robert Iman Egbert

Masters Theses

"Although synthesis procedures for active distributed RC networks are well developed, the approximation problem is largely unsolved. Previously proposed solutions have several disadvantages. A better solution to the approximation problem is obtained by developing an error expression involving the difference between the ideal specification and the exact realization, then minimizing this error by numerical techniques. The method is illustrated by designing a set of active distributed RC low-pass filters"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of The Splash-Plate Tower Concept, A Biological Wastewater Treatment Process, Robert Joseph Millman Jan 1973

A Study Of The Splash-Plate Tower Concept, A Biological Wastewater Treatment Process, Robert Joseph Millman

Masters Theses

"Different modifications and newer methods of treatment which utilize the basic trickling filter concepts, such as the Bio-Disc process, have been developed to increase the efficiency of wastewater treatment. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and evaluate a newer such method called the splash plate concept.

The splash-plate concept utilizes a series of circular plates mounted horizontally on a vertical axis. This allows the wastewater being treated to travel over one plate to the edge and splash down to the next lower plate and so on throughout the tower. A total of four units were operated at different …
