Creep And Stiffness Of Full Column Resin Grouted Roof Bolts., Wesley Clare Patrick Jan 1975

Creep And Stiffness Of Full Column Resin Grouted Roof Bolts., Wesley Clare Patrick

Masters Theses

"A three-phase test program was utilized to evaluate some creep and stiffness parameters of several types of full-column resin-grouted roof-bolt installations. The tests indicate that: (1) a large percentage of an applied load bleeds off during the first 100 hours subsequent to bolt installation; (2) the amount of load bleed-off is a f unction of the grout annulus size and the bolt surface roughness; (3) retightening of grouted rock bolts reduces the magnitude and rate of the load bleed-off phenomenon; and (4) resin-grouted roof bolts provide a stiffer roof support system in that bolt elongation resulting from an applied load, …

An Optimization Method For Scheduling Nuclear Reactor's Refueling St. Louis County, Missouri., Abbas Razavi

Masters Theses

"This paper describes a method to optimize the refueling schedule of the nuclear units. The method finds a mid-range (five to ten years) optimum refueling schedule by varying the refueling date of the nuclear units. The cycles of the nuclear units are the variable parameters, with fuel enrichment and quantity being fixed.

An empirical technique is used to calculate the nuclear fuel cost. Seasonal constraints are taken into account, and no nuclear unit will be shut down while another is down"-- Abstract, p. ii

An Examination Of The Adaptive Random Search Technique., Mark William Heuckroth Jan 1975

An Examination Of The Adaptive Random Search Technique., Mark William Heuckroth

Masters Theses

"Random search procedures have recently been successfully applied to the optimization o f a variety of chemical engineering problems, including optimization of chemical processes by flow sheet simulation. These procedures represent the independent variables as random variables described by probability distributions. The adaptive random search procedure centers the distribution for each variable about the best search point found and examines this region for a better point. Thus, this technique has the ability of continuously moving the search region toward the optimum, which is particularly advantageous in following constraints.

This study examines the efficiency of the adaptive random search technique as …

A Method For Verifying The Kalman Conjecture., Charles Edward Connelly Jan 1975

A Method For Verifying The Kalman Conjecture., Charles Edward Connelly

Masters Theses

"The Kalman and Aizerman conjectures are of value because, if true, they allow the replacement of a nonlinear stability problem by an equivalent linear stability problem. However, the conjectures are not true in general. This thesis presents a method for verifying the Kalman conjecture. A theorem is also presented which extends the usefulness of the method and allows several very general results to be obtained. The method is based on an off-axis circle criterion of Cho and Narendra and a consideration of the curvature of the Nyquist locus of the transfer f unction. A table is included which summarizes the …

Crystallization Of A Tetrasilicic Fluormica Glass, W. H. Daniels, Robert E. Moore Jan 1975

Crystallization Of A Tetrasilicic Fluormica Glass, W. H. Daniels, Robert E. Moore

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crystallization of a tetrasilicic synthetic mica glass of nominal composition K2Mg5Si8O20F4 was investigated at selected temperatures from 560° to 1150°C using DTA, density measurements, electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction techniques. Crystallization is shown to occur in 2 stages. (1) Initial structural ordering occurs at ∼600°C, as indicated by a strongly exothermic reaction, an increase in density, and the appearance of X‐ray diffraction lines. (This transformation temperature is related to fluorine content.) (2) The crystal morphology of the glass‐ceramic changes at 900° to 1150°C. A mechanism is proposed for the transformation from amorphous to crystalline structure in this synthetic mica …

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Srtio By Capacitance Manometry, D. B. Schwarz, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The oxidation kinetics of a single crystal of SrTiOs were measured with a tensivolumetric system over the temperature range 700 -975 at 0.03 atm oxygen pressure. The oxidation was found to be oxygen diffusion limited with an activation energy of 14.9 - 1.3 kcal/mole. Combining the kinetic data with relative defect concentration data yielded an activation energy for oxygen self-diffusion of 57 - 16 kcal/mole. The enthalpy of formation of doubly ionized oxygen vacancies was calculated to be 126 - 13 kcal/mol. © 1975, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.
