Application Of Solar Energy Collectors To Grain Drying, Gene C. Shove

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Flat plate solar energy collectors utilizing air as the energy transfer medium can be constructed on the side walls of grain drying bins or incorporated into the walls and roofs of farm buildings adjacent to grain drying bins. Farm buildings provide large flat areas capable of capturing considerable solar energy with relatively simple collectors. Experimental solar grain drying installations now in use are providing design, construction, and operational information.

"Home Winterization For Poor Elderly" -- A Model Of Value Clarification In The Energy Crisis, Clayton L. Smith

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The main intention of this paper will be to demonstrate a practical and proven model for helping those who suffer because of the energy crisis now. It will illustrate with the aid of audio—visuals what is being done for the poor elderly in this area to help them practice energy conservation. Last year, for example, nearly three hundred U.M.R. students directed by a V.I.S.T.A. worker (Volunteers in Service To America) winterized nearly fifty homes. Engineering students were able to demonstrate their skills and at the same experience an intergenerational ministry.

The poor elderly are those persons in our society today …

The application of nuclear waste as a heat source affects the entire scope of nuclear waste management offering both benefits and problems which must be examined thoroughly before final conclusions can be drawn.

De Facto Limits To Growth: Federal Environmental Policy And Domestic Energy Development In The United States, Richard H. K. Vietor Oct 1976

De Facto Limits To Growth: Federal Environmental Policy And Domestic Energy Development In The United States, Richard H. K. Vietor

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper argues that public environmental policy, since 1969, has imposed de facto limits on the growth of America's economy. A plethora of regulations, in response to widespread public resistance to industrial growth, has already circumscribed energy developments to the point of inertia. These national policies reflect changed public values, the implications of which should be acknowledged and evaluated by corporate and governmental energy planners and by the energy consumer as well.

This paper presents an overview of the NWTS program and describes the stepwise approach that is being taken in meeting the objective of the program.

The Effect Of Aec/Nrc Regulation On The Development Of Nuclear Steam Power, David L. Bodde Oct 1976

The Effect Of Aec/Nrc Regulation On The Development Of Nuclear Steam Power, David L. Bodde

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Changing regulatory requirements were an important influence on the technological development of the Nuclear Steam Supply System. Manufacturers felt this influence primarily through increased requirements for information processing rather than through technical changes in the hardware. Regulatory change was driven by: the rapid growth of nuclear plant size; delays in critical safety research; public uncertainty regarding how safe nuclear plants should be; the extreme consequences of a nuclear accident; and strong pressure for the rapid commercialization of nuclear power.

The present mix of fuels, and three alternative fuel mixes more strongly dependent on coal, are analyzed by means of the model.

Geophysical Approaches To Coal Exploration, Gerald B. Rupert Oct 1976

Geophysical Approaches To Coal Exploration, Gerald B. Rupert

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The exploration for minerals by geophysical means has been confined largely to the search for hydrocarbons and metallics while applications to coal exploration are somewhat limited. However, the surface reflection seismic technique has been successfully applied not only to delineating coal deposits but also as a tool in mine exploitation. Furthermore, channel waves generated underground have demonstrated potential in detecting the presence of faults in advance of the coal face and Vibroisis* experiments have been conducted whereby abandoned underground workings have been detected by surface seismic arrays. Examples of all of the preceeding are presented and discussed.

Toward Establishing A National Energy Policy, J. L. Gaddy Oct 1976

Toward Establishing A National Energy Policy, J. L. Gaddy

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Coal must become the predominant energy source for this nation for the next 50- 100 years and petroleum must be conserved for petrochemicals. Coal gasification and liquefaction are wasteful processes that will lead tounnecessarily rapid depletion of coal reserves. Generation of electricity with coal is a more economical means of using coal for energy and this technology is already available. This paper discusses the advantages of a coal-electric energy economy and how such an economy.can be implemented.

Economic Analysis Of Wind Generation And Energy Storage For Electric Utility Systems, B. W. Jones, P. M. Moretti Oct 1976

Economic Analysis Of Wind Generation And Energy Storage For Electric Utility Systems, B. W. Jones, P. M. Moretti

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

If wind generators are being evaluated as part of a larger electric utility generation system, the economic analysis should consider all of their effects upon the make-up and operation of the rest of the system. The introduction of wind generators changes the characteristics of the effective load seen by the rest of the system and consequently shifts the optimal mix of base, swinging, and peaking capacity and their operation. Storage systems used in conjunction with wind generators must also be evaluated. The storage can also be evaluated by determining its effect upon load characteristics. It is shown that the storage …

Economic Aspects Of Imposed Air Standards, John H. Hoag, J. David Reed Oct 1976

Economic Aspects Of Imposed Air Standards, John H. Hoag, J. David Reed

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Due to concern for the state of the environment, the federal government passed laws forcing industry to accomodate the wishes of environmentalists. In particular the Clean Air Standards Act imposed a measure of air pollution and dictated an upper bound on the amount of allowable air pollution in terms of this standard. This paper attempts to investigate the impact of such a law in the context of a two firm world. In the model each firm produces output and pollution so as to maximize profit. The pollution of all firms together is the variable which comes under constraint of the …

Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis Of Light Gage Steel Shear Diaphragms, Erdal Atrek, Arthur H. Nilson

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

SUMMARY Shear diaphragm action of properly designed light gage steel panels used for floors, roofs, and walls in steel buildings increase the stiffness and strength of such buildings. Considerable savings in weight and cost can be realized if full account of this action is taken in design. To make good use of the diaphragm action, detailed knowledge on diaphragm response to loading is essential. An efficient computer program has been prepared to analyze light gage steel shear diaphragm behavior in the linear and nonlinear ranges of response, up to collapse. The program uses figinite element concepts for analysis, and has …

INTRODUCTION A. Purpose of Investigation. The design of bolted connections in cold-formed steel structures is based on the present AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. 1 Prior to the development of the design criteria, bolted connections were tested at University of Michigan 2 in the 1940's and then at Cornell University 3,4 in the 1950's. The present design provisions were developed primarily on the basis of the tests conducted by George Winter and his associates at Cornell University. Additional tests were recently made by Popowich 5 on multi-bolt connections and by Dhalla 6 on connections with …

Mechanical Connections In Cold-Formed Steel: Comprehensive Test Procedures And Evaluation Methods, John Fraczek, George Winter, Teoman Peköz May 1976

Mechanical Connections In Cold-Formed Steel: Comprehensive Test Procedures And Evaluation Methods, John Fraczek, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Design equations do not exist for connections in cold-formed steel formed with most types of mechanical fasteners, and such designs are presently based on test results. A lack of standard test procedures and corresponding evaluation methods impedes the acceptance of connection designs and the exchange of information vital to understanding the connection performance of a large number of mechanical fasteners with diverse properties. Initial steps toward standardization are taken with the development of fixtures and procedures for single shear, pullout and pull-over tests. The proposed single shear tests employ both a simple specimen formed with two overlapping straps and a …

Intermetallic Reactions In Vacuum-Deposited Nickel And Gold Films On (111) Silicon Single Crystals, K. H. Yoon, Gordon Lewis, L. L. Levenson Apr 1976

Intermetallic Reactions In Vacuum-Deposited Nickel And Gold Films On (111) Silicon Single Crystals, K. H. Yoon, Gordon Lewis, L. L. Levenson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pure nickel and gold thin films were vacuum-deposited on (111) silicon single crystals. When Ni/Au/Si or Au/Ni/Si samples were heated to about 550° in situ, hexagonal or deformed hexagonal shaped crystallites were formed on the silicon substrates. The composition of these crystallites was determined by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and scanning Auger microprobe methods. The crystallites were identified as NiSi2. The crystal-lites on the (111) silicon plane parallel to the surface appeared as regular hexagons while the inclined crystal-lites resembled trapezia. The results of Auger spectra and in-depth composition profiles for Ni, Au, and Si showed that the …

Sample Design For Electricity Pricing Experiments: Anticipated Precision For A Time-Of-Day Pricing Experiment, Dennis J. Aigner Jan 1976

Sample Design For Electricity Pricing Experiments: Anticipated Precision For A Time-Of-Day Pricing Experiment, Dennis J. Aigner

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The primary goal of a pricing experiment is basically the same as that for an experiment in direct load control: To discover the effects of time-of-day pricing on the shape of the daily load curve for a particular customer or class of customers. For the pricing experiment, it is also of interest to know how those effects are related to the pricing structure itself.

In this paper, we consider two alternative models of kwh consumption for residential customers as the basis for calculating an optimal experimental design, and compare them in terms of the levels of precision of estimation (for …
