Determination Of Washability And Flotation Characteristics Of Important Missouri Coal Seams, Hayri Erten Oct 1980

Determination Of Washability And Flotation Characteristics Of Important Missouri Coal Seams, Hayri Erten

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Most of the 14 workable coal seams in the State of Missouri are considered to be high in ash and sulfur contents and need beneficiation in order to meet customer and Environmental Protection Agency requirements. If proper beneficiation methods can be designed, more Missouri coal will be mined and used within the state.

The objectives of this research are (1) to draw the washability curves of important Missouri coal seams in order to determine their washability characteristics, and (2) to determine the flotation characteristics of the same seams.

Tests conducted on 20 samples taken from Bevier, Croweburg, Mulky, and Summit …

The Energy Conservation And Safety Dilemma, Burns E. Hegler Oct 1980

The Energy Conservation And Safety Dilemma, Burns E. Hegler

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Since the beginning of the energy crisis, efforts to conserve energy often have seemed to be diametrically opposed to the precepts of safety. This is true if conservation is not planned and conducted properly. However, energy and safety can be quite compatible and may work to their mutual advantage if effectively managed.

Managing In An Energy Scarce Environment, John Amos Oct 1980

Managing In An Energy Scarce Environment, John Amos

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Present engineering management principles, operations research techniques, and economic theories were mainly developed dealing with only one scarce resource -- capital. Today, the engineer manager must consider another scarce resource -- energy. In the past, energy was never considered a major factor; i.e., equipment was considered a good investment if labor was reduced, regardless of energy cost. Many other managerial decisions are similar; therefore, the engineer manager must understand why many decisions based on traditional techniques may be misleading. The engineer manager must now utilize more complex engineering management techniques instead of evaluating only one factor or using rules of …

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage: A Cost And Sizing Study, Haur D. Shaw, J. Derald Morgan, Max Darwin Anderson Oct 1980

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage: A Cost And Sizing Study, Haur D. Shaw, J. Derald Morgan, Max Darwin Anderson

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Two applications for superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) devices in power systems are studied. One is for peak shaving, and the other is for load leveling. Consideration is given to placing these devices near load centers to reduce the line losses. For (SMES) cases studied using smaller size devices at several load centers, the line losses are lowered. However, the efficiency of SMES is proportional to its size, and the capitol cost per MWH is much greater for a smaller size SMES unit when compared to a larger SMES unit. Once the location or locations for SMES have been selected, …

Evaluation Of Zinc Sulphate Electrolytes Containing Certain Impurities And Additives By Cyclic Voltammetry, D. R. Fosnacht, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The polarization characteristics of acid zinc sulphate electrolytes containing various amounts of germanium and cobalt were examined by cyclic voltammetry. The effects of zinc and acid concentration, temperature, and surface preparation were also investigated. Small concentrations of impurities are shown to cause measurable changes in polarization behavior. Levels as low as 0.02 mgl-1 Ge and 0.1 mgl-1 Co can be detected using this technique. The actual mechanism of impurity behavior is more clearly delineated using this technique and evaluation of the data from these tests indicate that germanium and cobalt form local galvanic cells. The results of these short-term tests …

The Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Du Thinh Dat, Teoman Peköz Feb 1980

The Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Du Thinh Dat, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION The flexural buckling of columns is a fundamental problem whose solution was found by Euler more than 200 years ago. Since then, refinements have extended the solution to the inelastic range and clarified the influence of initial deflections and residual stresses. Most of these advances were made by studying hot-rolled steel columns, which are widely used. Cold-formed sections are coming into greater and greater use, thanks to the great variety of geometries available, which make them suitable for specific needs, and the significant advances made in the last four decades in understanding the behavior of cold-formed steel and in …

Ultimate Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Z-Purlins, M. A. A. Razak, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel structures are being widely used in various forms of construction such as industrial plants, gymnasiums, hangars and metal buildings. One important feature of metal building construction is the use of light gage roof panels connected to purlins, particularly of the Z-section. This section is, besides the channel-section, the simplest two-flange section which can be produced by cold-forming. The purlins have span lengths of 20 to 25 feet, generally made continuous over the building rigid frames by nesting. Construction details vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The purlins available would typically have prepunched holes for connection of various types …

Abutment-Thermal Interaction Of A Composite Bridge, David B. Lewis Jan 1980

Abutment-Thermal Interaction Of A Composite Bridge, David B. Lewis

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

A two-span test structure, with tie-rods to similate approach-slab forces, was subjected to thermal loading. The resultant strains and deflections are correlated with those obtained from a prior theoretical study. It was concluded ~hat the theoretical procedure provides a rational method for predicting the thermal behavior of composite-girder bridge structures.

Autooscillations And Nonlinear Anelasticity, Manfred Wuttig, Tetsuro Suzuki Jan 1980

Autooscillations And Nonlinear Anelasticity, Manfred Wuttig, Tetsuro Suzuki

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In conclusion it can be stated that a novel phenomenon, a mechanical auto oscillation, has been described theoretically and shown to exist experimentally. These auto oscillations occur when a nonlinear anelastic solid is forced into large amplitude oscillations in the vicinity of a martensitic transformation. They manifest themselves as a low frequency auto modulation of the a martensitic transformation. They manifest themselves as low frequency auto modulation of the forced vibration of such a solid. © 1980.

Combined Heat And Lass Transfer In Mixed Confection Ower A Horizontal Flat Plate, T. S. Chen, F. A. Strobel Jan 1980

Combined Heat And Lass Transfer In Mixed Confection Ower A Horizontal Flat Plate, T. S. Chen, F. A. Strobel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The combined effects of buoyancy forces from thermal and species diffusion on the heat and mass transfer characteristics are analyzed for laminar boundary layer flow over a horizontal flat plate. The analysis is restricted to processes with low concentration levels such that the interfacial velocities due to mass diffusion and the diffusion-thermo/thermo-diffusion effects can be neglected. Numerical results for friction factor, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number are presented for gases having a Prandtl number of 0.7, with Schmidt numbers ranging from 0.6 to 2.0. In general, it is found that, for the thermally assisting flow, the surface heat and mass …

Surface Electromagnetic Wave Field Strength Measurements On Railroad Tracks, Brian C.H. Lai, Brian C.H. Lai, Charles A. Goben Jan 1980

Surface Electromagnetic Wave Field Strength Measurements On Railroad Tracks, Brian C.H. Lai, Brian C.H. Lai, Charles A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports an experimental investigation of surface electromagnetic wave (SEW) energy distribution on railroad tracks. Radial field distribution of SEW on 112-lb/yd rails were examined utilizing a dipole diode detector. Laboratory and on-site measurements were made. The field strength distribution data at frequencies 3.000, 6.000, and 9.733 GHz show that the main part of the SEW TE mode energy (almost 90 percent) is on the head of the rail. Use of dielectric augmentation on the side of rails resulted in lower attenuation of the propagating SEW. Thick dielectric strip augmentation data shows enhancement of SEW propagation in agreement with …

Mti Improvement Factors For Weighted Dfts, Rodger E. Ziemer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to enhance the detection of moving targets in ground clutter is examined. The improvement factor, defined as the signal-to-clutter ratio at the DFT processor output compared with that of the input, is given as a function of normalized clutter spectral width for various weighting functions on the DFT input. The effect of quantization of the weights on the improvement factor is also examined. Copyright © 1980 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Calcium Migration In Dense Alumina Aged In Water And Physiological Media, Heidi H. Osterholm Jan 1980

Calcium Migration In Dense Alumina Aged In Water And Physiological Media, Heidi H. Osterholm

Masters Theses

"The flexural strength and relative Ca concentration at the external surface were measured for a dense alumina aged in deionized water and Ringer's solution at 40⁰C for 60 weeks and at 80⁰C for 45 weeks. Changes in the Ca concentration at the external surface and flexural strength during aging were attributed to the dissolution of the calcium impurity believed to be present in a glass phase of unknown composition. Auger electron spectroscopy was used to investigate the relative concentration of the calcium impurity at the external and fracture surfaces of a dense alumina after in vivo exposure for 6, 12 …

Aerodynamic Study Of Dual Lifting Surfaces, Kamran Rokhsaz Jan 1980

Aerodynamic Study Of Dual Lifting Surfaces, Kamran Rokhsaz

Masters Theses

"Aerodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional dual airfoil systems have been investigated in an incompressible flow field in the area where improved aerodynamic characteristics are realized, due to the flow field coupling of the two airfoils. A simple analytic model has been developed to demonstrate some of the basic coupling effects in such systems. Laplace's differential equation for the stream-function has been solved numerically to determine the potential flow about dual airfoil geometries of different gap, stagger, and decalage. Two numerical methods have been employed; a finite-difference approach in Cartesian coordinates, for which the mixed boundary conditions have been transformed to the …

Microwave Sintering Of Batio₃ Ceramics, Kurt Duane Humphrey Jan 1980

Microwave Sintering Of Batio₃ Ceramics, Kurt Duane Humphrey

Masters Theses

"Barium titanate and BaTiO₃-based multilayer capacitors were sintered in a commercial microwave oven. The oven was equipped with a 2.45 GHz continuous-wave magnetron with a maximum power output of 650 watts.

Microwave-absorbing setters made of SiC were used to offset thermal losses from the samples and allow sintering temperatures (>1325°C) to be achieved. Pure samples were pressed from commercial BaTiO₃ powder and microwave sintered to about 90% of theoretical density. Multilayer capacitors were obtained from commercial manufacturers and used in all sintering experiments. A comparison between microwave sintered material and identical samples sintered in a conventional electric furnace revealed …

A Multiprocessor System Using A Switch Matrix Configuration, Rabah Aoufi Jan 1980

A Multiprocessor System Using A Switch Matrix Configuration, Rabah Aoufi

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes a class of interconnection networks based on the use of a switch matrix to provide processor to memory communication. This switch allows a direct link between any processor to any memory module. The cost and performance of this network are analytically examined. The results are compared with those of a multiprocessor system using a time-shared bus configuration and it is shown that for the two extreme cases of maximum and minimum throughput, the two approaches are equivalent from a performance point of view. However, in the general case, even with a higher cost, the switch matrix provides …
