Extension Of Vlasov’S Semi-Membrane Theory To Reinforced Composite Shells, Victor Birman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Governing equations for the statics and dynamics of reinforced composite shells are developed based on Vlasov's semi-membrane shell theory. These equations have closed-form solutions illustrated for buckling and free vibration problems. The buckling solution converges to the known result for unstiffened isotropic shells. © 1992 by ASME.

Machining Of Composite Materials. Part I: Traditional Methods, Serge Abrate, D. A. Walton Jan 1992

Machining Of Composite Materials. Part I: Traditional Methods, Serge Abrate, D. A. Walton

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Composite materials are more difficult to machine than metals mainly because they are anisotropic, non-homogeneous and their reinforcing fibers are very abrasive. During machining, defects are introduced into the workpiece, and tools wear rapidly. Traditional machining techniques such as drilling or sawing can be used with proper tool design and operating conditions. A review of traditional machining methods applied to organic and metal matrix composites is presented in this article. The use of non-traditional machining methods such as waterjet, laser and ultrasonic machining will be discussed in the second part. © 1992.

A Complete Model Characterization Of Brushless Dc Motors, N. Hemati, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 1992

A Complete Model Characterization Of Brushless Dc Motors, N. Hemati, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors address the modeling problem associated with brushless DC motors (BLDCMs) with nonuniform air gaps that operate in a range where magnetic saturation may exist. The mathematical model includes the effects of reluctance variations as well as magnetic saturation to guarantee proper modeling of the system. An experimental procedure is developed and implemented in a laboratory environment to identify the electromagnetic characteristics of a BLDCM in the presence of magnetic saturation. It is demonstrated that the modeling problem associated with the class of BLDCMs can be formulated in terms of mathematically modeling a set of multidimensional surfaces corresponding to …

Hybrid Clamping In Ntsc Digital Video Equipment, Norman R. Cox, Douglas William Irwin Jan 1992

Hybrid Clamping In Ntsc Digital Video Equipment, Norman R. Cox, Douglas William Irwin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two algorithms that are suitable for deriving the blanking level of a National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) composite video signal are described. One method consists of averaging digitized color-burst samples taken from successive scan lines. A second method involves processing a group of samples taken from a single burst interval. Either algorithm used in a hybrid clamping arrangement results in automatic drift compensation and the ability to tie the back porch or sync tip to a predetermined digital output code. This aids in matching the analog signal to the input of the analog-to-signal (A/D) converter for maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). …

Transition From Laminar To Turbulent Flow Around An Airfoil, Chang-Ren Chen Jan 1992

Transition From Laminar To Turbulent Flow Around An Airfoil, Chang-Ren Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

"A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code has been developed for two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows and employed to solve the Navier Stokes equations around an airfoil of arbitrary shape. A low-Reynolds-number k — e turbulence model including curvature effect was used to consider the gain and loss of turbulent kinetic energy. To include laminar sublayer into the computational domain, a multi-layer grid and a cubic-slpine grid were introduced through a conservative form of coordinate transformation. The flow structure varies with the Reynolds numbers. For an airfoil at low Reynolds numbers (below ten thousand), distinct vortex shedding patterns can be found in …

PREFACE During the past four years, two methods were developed for the design of stainless steel structural members at the University of Missouri-Rolla with consultation of Professor T. V. Galambos at the University of Minnesota. One of the methods is based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and the other is based on the allowable stress design (ASD). Both design methods are now included in the new ASCE Standard 8-90, Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members. At the September 21, 1990 meeting of the Control Group of the ASCE Stainless Steel Cold-Formed Section Standards …

Analysis Of Baseband Equivalent Noise In A First-Order Correlation Loop Utilizing Filtered Pseudonoise Signals, Kurt Louis Kosbar, Christopher J. Scholten Nov 1991

Analysis Of Baseband Equivalent Noise In A First-Order Correlation Loop Utilizing Filtered Pseudonoise Signals, Kurt Louis Kosbar, Christopher J. Scholten

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional direct-sequence and frequency-hopping spread spectrum systems utilize delay-lock loops to track the timing epoch of pseudonoise codes. These devices perform admirably at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), however, they are suboptimal at moderate and low SNR. A correlation loop that employs appropriately filtered pseudonoise signals for the local cross-correlation waveform may have superior performance under these conditions. The performance of this modified correlation loop will be determined by the cross correlation function of the transmitted waveform and locally generated reference signals, along with the statistics of the baseband equivalent noise process. In this work, we find the statistics of the …

Composite Stock Cutting Through Simulated Annealing, Pipatpong Poshyanonda, Cihan H. Dagli

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper explores the use of Simulated Annealing as an optimization technique for the problem Composite Material Stock Cutting. The shapes are not constrained to be convex polygons or even regular shapes. However, due to the composite nature of the material, the orientation of the shapes on the stock is restricted. For placements of various shapes, we show how to determine a cost function, annealing parameters, and performance.

Network Model Investigation Of Gas Transport In Bidisperse Porous Adsorbents, John H. Petropoulos, John K. Petrou, Athanasios I. Liapis Jun 1991

Network Model Investigation Of Gas Transport In Bidisperse Porous Adsorbents, John H. Petropoulos, John K. Petrou, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A capillary network model consisting of a micropore network permeated by one of macropores of randomly varying size has been constructed. Although simplified (to keep computer space and time requirements low) in relation to a real bidisperse porous adsorbent or catalyst, it embodies the salient pore structural features likely to determine the gas-transport behavior of such porous solids. Suitable model calculations of Knudsen gas-phase and surface diffusion enabled us to (i) validate useful approximate methods for the more economical evaluation of network permeability and (ii) demonstrate certain important characteristic effects of nonrandom bidisperse pore structure on transport behavior and their …

Vertical And Angular Motion Of A Wing Model In Steady Flow: A Physical And Numerical Experimental Study, Andrew P. Johnston

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The dynamic response of a rigid wing in steady flow mounted on translational and rotational elastic supports is investigated. This study presents both a numerical and a physical experimental arrangement that can be employed to investigate the effect of a wide range of parameters on the response of the wing subjected to steady flow. An interactive computer program, which utilizes the fourth order Runge-Kutta integration scheme to solve the governing differential equations, is discussed. The program output allows for quick visualization of the change in response due to parameter changes. An experimental arrangement that utilizes the new 18" x 18" …

Study Of Joint Flexibility In Steel Frame Structures, Randy R. Frank Apr 1991

Study Of Joint Flexibility In Steel Frame Structures, Randy R. Frank

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Joint flexibility plays an important role in the distribution of strains and displacements in the frame structures of buildings, towers, automobiles, etc.. The objective of this project is to study the effect of flexibility (or rigidity) of two simple mechanical joints in frame structures on the stress and displacement distributions, using both experimental and analytical methods. Three welded and three bolted samples were fabricated using A-36 low carbon steel in a two column and horizontal crossmember (table) arrangement. This arrangement allows for both shear forces and axial forces in the joint. From a three element rectangular rosette strain gage attached …

Model Calculational Approach To The Conformation Of Adsorbed Polypeptide Fragments, Timothy J. Mckeon Apr 1991

Model Calculational Approach To The Conformation Of Adsorbed Polypeptide Fragments, Timothy J. Mckeon

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The focus of the paper is to examine possible conformational changes of peptides when placed in the presence of a poly-synthetic material. A major concern in the pharmaceutical industry is the loss of potency of polypeptide drug products during processing, packaging and storage. An example of this is polymer syringes being used in place of glass ones. The effect is that some protien-derived products experience structural changes due to contact with the polymer. This is otherwise known as surface denaturation. In order to understand the energetics of interfacial polypeptide systems, a calculational approach was used via the program Alchemy. The …

Development Of A Large Commercial Transport Model For A Real-Time Digital Flight Simulator, John Francis Winkler Apr 1991

Development Of A Large Commercial Transport Model For A Real-Time Digital Flight Simulator, John Francis Winkler

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

In order to test the adaptability of the University of Missouri-Rolla's flight simulator to different types of aircraft, a basic mathematical model of a large commercial transport aircraft is developed. The original aircraft model is based on the Cessna 210, and in order to accommodate the drastic differences between the Cessna 210 and the Boeing 747, many changes are made to the simulation code. The aircraft geometric data, stability and control derivatives, and weights data are altered to match those of the 747. Changes are made within the various subroutines to include thrust reversal, spoilers, and a variable incidence horizontal …
