Low Temperature Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Nanophase Batio3 And Bafe12019 Powders, Fatih Dogan, Shawn O'Rourke, Mao-Xu Qian, Mehmet Sarikaya

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nanocrystalline powders with an average particle size of 50 nm have been synthesized in two materials systems under hydrothermal conditions below 100°C. Processing variables, such as temperature, concentration and molar ratio of reactants and reaction time were optimized to obtain particles of reduced size and stoichiometric compositions. Hydrothermal reaction takes place between Ba (OH)2 solution and titanium/iron precursors in sealed polyethylene bottles in the BaTiO3 and BaFe12019 systems, respectively. While crystalline BaTiO3 forms relatively fast within a few hours, formation of fully crystalline and stoichiometric BaFe12019 require considerably longer reaction times up to several weeks and strongly …

Automated State Model Generation Algorithm For Power Circuits And Systems, O. Wasynczuk, Scott D. Sudhoff Dec 1996

Automated State Model Generation Algorithm For Power Circuits And Systems, O. Wasynczuk, Scott D. Sudhoff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new approach of automatically generating state-space models of power circuits and systems is presented. In this approach, the composite system state equations are established algorithmically given the standard node incidence matrix and elementary branch data (e.g. resistances, inductances, back emf's). The resulting state equations can be solved using a variety of numerical techniques or commercially available computer simulation programs. An example system consisting of a three-phase generator and rectifier load is used to illustrate this approach. Experimental verification is also provided. © 1996 IEEE.

A State Space Modeling And Control Method For Multivariable Smart Structural Systems, Robert Butler, Vittal S. Rao Dec 1996

A State Space Modeling And Control Method For Multivariable Smart Structural Systems, Robert Butler, Vittal S. Rao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A system identification technique for the derivation of minimal, continuous time state variable models for multivariable smart structural systems is presented. The structural identification technique is based on the measurement of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the structure. Two sensors are required for each mode included in the structural system model. Unlike computational system identification techniques, the relatively large number of sensors simplifies the identification process making it ideal for systems with several inputs and outputs. Additionally, the identification technique allows the implementation of multi-input multi-output full state feedback controllers with simple analog hardware. The amount of hardware required for the …

A Voltage Control Strategy For Current-Regulated Pwm Inverters, Oleg Wasynczuk, Scott D. Sudhoff, Tin D. Tran, David H. Clayton, Henry J. Hegner Dec 1996

A Voltage Control Strategy For Current-Regulated Pwm Inverters, Oleg Wasynczuk, Scott D. Sudhoff, Tin D. Tran, David H. Clayton, Henry J. Hegner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Alternative voltage control strategies for current-regulated PWM inverters are analyzed, including previously established feedforward and feedforward/feedback controllers and a newly proposed decoupling feedback control strategy. The steady-state and dynamic characteristics of each of these control methods are illustrated and compared for a selected inverter design. It is shown that the feedforward controller exhibits steady-state error and an undesirable overshoot of the output voltages during startup. The addition of a feedback loop eliminates the steady-state error and reduces the overshoot; however, the natural response is underdamped regardless of the choice of feedback gains. A decoupling feedback control strategy that eliminates the …

Magnetic Dynamics In Underdoped Yba2cu3o72x: Direct Observation Of A Superconducting Gap, Pengcheng Dai, Mehmet Yethiraj, Herbert A. Mook, T. B. Lindemer, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polarized and unpolarized triple-axis neutron measurements were performed on an underdoped crystal of YBa2Cu3O7-x (x 0.4 6 0.02, Tc 62.7 K). Our results indicate, contrary to earlier evidence, that the spin excitations in the superconducting state are essentially the same as those in the fully doped material except that the unusual 41 meV resonance is observed at 34.8 meV. The normal state spin excitations are characterized by a weakly energy-dependent continuum whose temperature dependence shows the clear signature of a superconducting gap at Tc. The enhancement at the resonance is accompanied by …

Dynamics Of An Adsorbed Patch And A Model For Spreading Of Films Of Ultralow Thicknesses, Partho Neogi Nov 1996

Dynamics Of An Adsorbed Patch And A Model For Spreading Of Films Of Ultralow Thicknesses, Partho Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamics of ultrathin films of liquids with vanishing 3D volatility, on solid surfaces, has been modeled by assuming that the films can be taken to be adsorbed patches spreading under surface diffusion. when the phase behavior of the adsorbed films is taken into account, it is seen that a vapor patch will spread without limits and evolve into a Gaussian profile. For a liquid film which has low 2D volatility, a patch will appear to equilibrate and the surface ahead will remain dry. This is the "pancake," a case where a wetting liquid stops spreading. the spreading kinetics is …

This second progress report describes the design of deck panel specimens for flexural tests and presents the test results of ninety-three deck panel specimens. The deck panels consisted of single and multiple hat-shaped ribs in their cross sections and were manufactured from 28, 26, and 22 gage steel sheets of Structural Grade 80 of ASTM A653 Steel. Among the ninety-three deck panel specimens, seventy-two panels were tested in simply supported and two-point loading conditions; sixteen panels were tested in simply supported and one-point loading conditions; and five panels with screws penetrating through tension flanges were tested in simply supported and …

Investigation Of Fundamental Emi Source Mechanisms Driving Common-Mode Radiation From Printed Circuit Boards With Attached Cables, David M. Hockanson, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Fei Sha, Michael J. Wilhelm Nov 1996

Investigation Of Fundamental Emi Source Mechanisms Driving Common-Mode Radiation From Printed Circuit Boards With Attached Cables, David M. Hockanson, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Fei Sha, Michael J. Wilhelm

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fundamental EMI source mechanisms leading to common-mode radiation from printed circuit boards with attached cables are presented in this paper. Two primary EMI source mechanisms have been identified: one associated with a differential-mode voltage and another associated with a differential-mode current, both of which result in a common-mode current on an attached cable. These mechanisms can be used to relate printed circuit layout geometries to EMI sources. The two mechanisms are demonstrated through numerical and experimental results, and an example from a production printed-circuit design is presented.

Effect Of Bracing Stiffness On Buckling Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Pratyoosh Gupta, George E. Blandford, S. T. Wang Oct 1996

Effect Of Bracing Stiffness On Buckling Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Pratyoosh Gupta, George E. Blandford, S. T. Wang

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

A three-dimensional second-order analysis is used to study the effect of brace stiffness on the buckling strength of cold-formed steel columns. The finite element formulation uses an iterative updated Lagrangian scheme to include the second-order geometric non-linear effects in the space frame element as well as the connection element used to model a brace. Lateral brace stiffness required to achieve full bracing for a two-dimensional column, and lateral and torsional brace stiffnesses required for a three-dimensional cold-formed steel column are studied. The strength requirement for various brace components, the effects of column initial imperfections, and the impact of varying warping …

Towards A Numerical Procedure For Composite Slab Assessment, Howard D. Wright, Milan Veljkovic Oct 1996

Towards A Numerical Procedure For Composite Slab Assessment, Howard D. Wright, Milan Veljkovic

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Composite slab design relies upon adequate shear bond resistance between the steel and concrete. This is achieved by friction between the materials and the mechanical interlock of embossments pressed in the steel. The behaviour of this shear bond resistance is complex and is obtainable only from model tests. This paper explores the potential for numerical modelling to provide the required design information.

Interaction Of Flange/Edge - Stiffened Cold Formed Steel C - Sections, Colin A. Rogers, R. M. Schuster Oct 1996

Interaction Of Flange/Edge - Stiffened Cold Formed Steel C - Sections, Colin A. Rogers, R. M. Schuster

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

A revision to the Canadian Standard (S136-94)[1] and the American Specification (AISI- 89)[2], in which the procedure to calculate the effective width of an edge-stiffened compressive flange is modified, has been proposed by Dinovitzer et al.[3]. The proposal involves a change of the equations for the flange plate buckling coefficients of Case II compressive elements, which eliminates a discontinuity in the effective width formulation. The modified local buckling procedure was compared with the current Canadian Cold Formed Steel Standard using a program of beam tests at the University of Waterloo[4] and data available in the literature[8,9, 10, 11,12]. Statistical results …

Geometric Imperfections And Residual Stresses For Use In The Analytical Modeling Of Cold-Formed Steel Members, Benjamin W. Schafer, Teoman Pekoz Oct 1996

Geometric Imperfections And Residual Stresses For Use In The Analytical Modeling Of Cold-Formed Steel Members, Benjamin W. Schafer, Teoman Pekoz

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Geometric imperfections and residual stresses influence the behavior and ultimate strength of cold-formed steel members. Advanced analytical models (i.e. nonlinear finite element models) must reflect this by including appropriate geometric imperfections and residual stresses. To date, little has been done to summarize the existing literature on these topics. As a result, no consensus exists for what magnitudes or distributions should be used when including geometric imperfections and residual stresses in the analysis, In this paper existing literature is reviewed and a new series of measurements carried out with the goal of providing basic guidelines for the use of geometric imperfections …

The Specification Committee of the American Iron and Steel Institute is currently developing a new Cold Formed Steel Design Manual. The work is being done under contract with Computerized Structural Design with oversight provided by AISI Subcommittee 26 - Design Manual. This paper describes the purpose and contents of this Manual. It is expected the Manual will be published in conjunction with the new edition of the Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members early in 1997. The Manual will contain the combined versions of the Allowable Stress Design and Load and Resistance Factor Design Specifications in addition …

Golden Anniversary Of The Aisi Specification, Wei-Wen Yu, Don S. Wolford, Albert L. Johnson Oct 1996

Golden Anniversary Of The Aisi Specification, Wei-Wen Yu, Don S. Wolford, Albert L. Johnson

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The use of cold-formed steel members in building construction began in about the 1850's in the United States and Great Britain. However, such thin-walled steel members were not widely used for buildings until after 1946 When the first edition of the Specification for the Design of Light Gage Steel Structural Members was published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI, 1946). This first design standard was based primarily on the research work sponsored by the Institute at Cornell University under the direction of Professor George Winter after 1939 (Winter, 1959a and 1959b). It was revised subsequently by the AISI …

The 1996 Aisi Specification, Roger L. Brockenbrough Oct 1996

The 1996 Aisi Specification, Roger L. Brockenbrough

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The first edition of the AISI specification was adopted in 1946. Thus, the new specification represents fifty years of progress in the formal structural application of cold-formed steel. The continued efforts of the Committee on Specifications and the sponsorship of the American Iron and Steel Institute have made this fifty years of progress in cold-formed steel a reality. The new specification combines ASD and LRFD provisions in a single document. This affords the design engineer the opportunity to become familiar with both methods and facilitates the use of whichever method is preferred. In addition, the new specification includes a number …

A Probabilistic Examination Of The Ultimate Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Elements, Benjamin W. Schafer, Mircea Gigoriu, Teoman Pekoz Oct 1996

A Probabilistic Examination Of The Ultimate Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Elements, Benjamin W. Schafer, Mircea Gigoriu, Teoman Pekoz

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper investigates the ultimate strength of cold-formed steel plates in uniform compression and pure bending with the goal of determining the statistical characteristics (mean and variance) of the ultimate strength. Plate thickness, longitudinal residual stress magnitude, and imperfection magnitude are considered as random variables. Based on existing data appropriate distributions are determined for these three random variables. Using ABAQUS for the strength prediction, two methods: Monte Carlo simulation and Taylor series approximation, are employed to determine statistical characteristics of the plates. The results are compared to the deterministic approach of the AISI Cold-Formed LRFD Specification.

Additional Design Considerations For Bolted Connections, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu Oct 1996

Additional Design Considerations For Bolted Connections, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

A multi-year study was conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla which focused on such topics as deformation characteristics of bearing type connections; strength of bearing and tensile type failure modes of flat sheet connections; tensile strength of staggered bolt patterns in flat sheet connections; and tensile strength of bolted connections for angle and channel sections. The intent of this research was to verify the present design approach for bolted connections and to expand the design methodology to include additional limit states, in particular the effect of deformation of the bolt hole and the influence of shear lag in angle and …

Performance Of Self-Tapping Screws In Lap-Shear Metal-To-Metal Connections, Reynaud Serrette, Victor Lopez Oct 1996

Performance Of Self-Tapping Screws In Lap-Shear Metal-To-Metal Connections, Reynaud Serrette, Victor Lopez

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The basic design requirement for screws in light gauge steel construction is the strength of the screw in a given application (metal-to-metal, wood-to-metal, or metal-to-wood) based on the body diameter of the screw. This statement is clearly obvious from the current AISI screw specifications for lap shear metal-to-metal connections. Recent research has shown that the performance of a screw fastener may also depend on other features of the screw including the head and thread style, and the method of installation (stripped versus unstripped screws). The data presented in this paper address these issues for lap shear connections designed with No. …

Shear Behavior Of Self Drilling Screws Used In Low Ductility Steel, Randy L. Daudet, Roger A. Laboube Oct 1996

Shear Behavior Of Self Drilling Screws Used In Low Ductility Steel, Randy L. Daudet, Roger A. Laboube

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The results of 264 shear tests conducted on self drilling screws are presented. The tests conducted include single screws in single shear, two screws in single shear, and single screws in double shear. The performance and behavior of self drilling screws in low ductility steel are compared to the performance and behavior of screws in normal ductility steel. Results are compared to the 1986 AISI specification with 1989 addenda, and the recently approved AISI specification for self drilling screws which will be included in the next edition of the AISI code. Also, new equations are presented for the tilting/bearing limit …

Cold Formed Steel Flat Width Ratio Limits, D/T And DI/W, Colin A. Rogers, R. M. Schuster Oct 1996

Cold Formed Steel Flat Width Ratio Limits, D/T And DI/W, Colin A. Rogers, R. M. Schuster

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper reports the findings of an investigation of the flat width ratio limit for simple edge-stiffeners of channels in bending. Willis & Wallace concluded that the lip flat width ratio limit, d/t, should have a value of 14 based on a comparison of the 1980 and 1986 editions of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Cold Formed Steel Specification. This conclusion was made using the results of only three channel beam tests with various lip sizes, Case III flanges and locally unstable webs. The CAN/CSA-S136 Technical Committee adopted the recommendations of Willis & Wallace and included the lip …

Comparison Of The Distortional Buckling Method For Flexural Members With Tests, Colin A. Rogers, R. M. Schuster Oct 1996

Comparison Of The Distortional Buckling Method For Flexural Members With Tests, Colin A. Rogers, R. M. Schuster

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

For thin-walled flexural members composed of certain geometric proportions and/or made of high-strength steel, a mode of buckling at half-wavelengths intermediate between local buckling and flexural-torsional or flexural buckling can occur. The mode is most common for edge (lip) stiffened members such as C and Z-sections, and involves rotation of the lip-flange component about the flange-web junction. This mode is commonly called distortional buckling. Presented in this paper is a design method for distortional buckling of flexural members recently submitted for ballot with the AISI Specification Committee for Cold-Formed Steel Structures. Currently, the North American Cold-Formed Steel Design Standards do …

Comparison Of Tests Of Purlins With And Without Cleats, Michael Celeban, Dan Popovic, Gregory J. Hancock Oct 1996

Comparison Of Tests Of Purlins With And Without Cleats, Michael Celeban, Dan Popovic, Gregory J. Hancock

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The paper describes a series of tests on Z-section purlins lapped over three spans and subject to wind uplift loading. The purlins were not attached to the rafters by cleats. Sheeting was screw-fastened to the purlins and a range of bridging (bracing) members was used to prevent lateral deflection and twisting. The results of the tests are compared with earlier tests with the same configurations but including cleats at the supports.

Finite Element Analysis Of Hollow Flange Beams With Web Stiffeners, P. Avery, Mahen Mahendran Oct 1996

Finite Element Analysis Of Hollow Flange Beams With Web Stiffeners, P. Avery, Mahen Mahendran

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

A new cold-formed and resistance welded section known as the Hollow Flange Beam (HFB) has been developed recently in Australia. In contrast to the common lateral torsional buckling mode of I-beams, this unique section comprising two stiff triangular flanges and a slender web is susceptible to a lateral distortional buckling mode of failure involving lateral deflection, twist, and cross-section change due to web distortion. This lateral distortional buckling behavior has been shown to cause significant reduction of the available flexural capacity of HFBs. An investigation using finite element analyses and large scale experiments was carried out into the use of …

Design Models Of Continuous Sandwich Panels, Paavo Hassinen, Lassi Martikainen Oct 1996

Design Models Of Continuous Sandwich Panels, Paavo Hassinen, Lassi Martikainen

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Static behaviour and failure modes of single-span lightweight sandwich panels are well known in general and several design guidelines and recommendations have been published concerning the determination of the resistance values for the design. At intermediate supports continuous sandwich panels are loaded by high bending moments and transverse support reactions simultaneously, which leads to nonlinear interactions between the stresses caused by the bending moment arid support reaction. The interaction failure modes have not been introduced on acceptable level in the current recommendations. The paper presents experimental and analytical results concerning the static behaviour and strength of the intermediate support area …

Structural Detailing Of Openings In Sandwich Panels, Ton Toma, Wim Courage Oct 1996

Structural Detailing Of Openings In Sandwich Panels, Ton Toma, Wim Courage

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

European Recommendations [1] exist which provide calculation rules to determine the strength and stiffness of sandwich panels composed of two metal faces with a foam in between. In case of openings in such panels (e.g. for windows) an influence will appear with regard to the stiffness and loadbearing capacity. At the institute TNO Building and Construction Research this item has been studied (numerical and experimental) which has resulted in simple design rules in addition to the before mentioned calculation rules for panels without openings. The program has been executed with financial support of the European Community for Coal and Steel …

Lower Cost Lightweight Cold-Formed Portal Frames, B. W. J. Van Rensburg, G. P. De Vos Oct 1996

Lower Cost Lightweight Cold-Formed Portal Frames, B. W. J. Van Rensburg, G. P. De Vos

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Southern Africa has a dire need for housing small industries and people, and concomitantly the creation of employment. It is common to use hot-rolled steel sections for industrial structures, which are pre-manufactured and then bolted together on site. In this paper an alternative structural concept for low-rise portals for light industries is proposed, whereby the total frame is made up of standard cold-formed sections which are cut and welded together on site. The cladding material is employed as an integral structural component through the principles of stressed skin diaphragm action. A short pile footing is proposed to provide a degree …

Non-Linear Buckling Analysis Of Thin-Walled Metal Columns, C. Jiang, J. Michael Davies Oct 1996

Non-Linear Buckling Analysis Of Thin-Walled Metal Columns, C. Jiang, J. Michael Davies

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Uniformly compressed cold-formed metal columns are susceptible to instability in a variety of modes. In the stability analysis of such a column, using any of the available numerical methods with the exception of the eigenvalue method, the perfect geometry of the column must be ' seeded' with an imperfection in order to cause it to collapse. If the member buckles in a global mode, it is easy to introduce an appropriate imperfection in form of a suitable displaced shape. However, it is more difficult to define the imperfections for the distortional and local buckling modes due to the unknown nature …

Structural Design Study On A Light - Gauge Steel Portal Frame With Cold-Formed Sigma Sections, Pentti Makelainen, Juhani Kankaanpaa Oct 1996

Structural Design Study On A Light - Gauge Steel Portal Frame With Cold-Formed Sigma Sections, Pentti Makelainen, Juhani Kankaanpaa

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Design study is conducted on a thin-gauge cold-formed steel portal frame with compound double (back-to-back) sigma sections in columns and rafters. Experimental study on the sem-irigid rafter-to-column connection behaviour is first carried out for two special bolted connection types based upon specific thin connection plates between the double sections. First connection plate studied was a compact corner plate bolted between double sigma sections of rafter and column end parts. Other connection plate type studied was composed of four together layered thin plates with the edges of two outer plates outwardly lipped at the free side of the corner plate. Connection …
