Thermal Characterization Of Pmma Thin Films On Silica Using Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Crystal E. Porter, Frank D. Blum
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The number of studies of thin polymer films has increased over recent years as technological processes incorporate the use of nanomaterials. An enhanced understanding of these films would enable us to predict bound-polymer behavior and thus improve the efficiency of processes and the quality of products. This is especially true as the thickness of the films approach molecular dimensions. The glass transition temperature of a polymer is one of the most important properties for characterization because it indicates how the polymer might perform macroscopically. when a polymer is confined, such as one the surface of a substrate, its behavior is …

Dynamics Of Acrylic Coupling Agents At Interfaces Of Composites, Hyoryoon Jo, Frank D. Blum
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most applications of polymers involve composites, wherein a polymer is used in conjunction with another material, typically a solid fiber or filler. A coupling agent can enhance the adhesion between a polymer matrix and an inorganic filler. Organofunctional silanes, RSiX are often used as coupling agents. The methoxy or ethoxy group, X, can typically be hydrolyzed with water and an acid or a base catalyst in a protic solvent. The silanol groups of a hydrolyzed coupling agent can condense with other silanol groups from a glass surface, while the alkyl group, R, blends physically or bonds chemically to the polymer …

Frequency-selective measurement of microwave signal parameters based on application of gyromagnetic converters has proven advantageous for the research of microwave radiation over a wide spectrum (several octaves) in multisignal regime in microwave path and for the solution of a number of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems. The measurement frequency band can be enlarged to millimeter-waves with application of monocrystal hexagonal ferrite resonators (HFR) having high internal magnetic fields. Millimeter-wave field interactions with the HFR having alternating resonance frequency are analyzed. This is useful for millimeter-wave signal modulation and demodulation. The analysis is based on the solution of magnetization vector motion equation …

Excitation Of The High-Q-Factor Whispering Gallery Modes In The Hemispherical Dielectric Resonator With The Cylinder Shield, Sergey Kharkovsky, V. V. Kutuzov, A. E. Kogut
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A hollow metal cylinder with a semicircle in the base is used as the shield of a hemispherical dielectric resonator with whispering gallery (WG) modes. It is shown that the spectrum of the WG modes of this resonator is clearer than the spectrum of a similar resonator with a hemispherical shield. It is determined that the high-Q-factor WG modes are excited in the proposed resonator by the coupling slot on the mirror. Their fields are localized in the dielectric. The frequency dependence of the Q-factor value is measured. A good conformity of this experimental dependence with the analytic dependence is …

Fed-Batch Dynamic Optimization Using Generalized Dual Heuristic Programming, Donald C. Wunsch, M. S. Iyer
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Traditionally fed-batch biochemical process optimization and control uses complicated theoretical off-line optimizers, with no online model adaptation or re-optimization. This study demonstrates the applicability, effectiveness, and economic potential of a simple phenomenological model for modeling, and an adaptive critic design, generalized dual heuristic programming, for online re-optimization and control of an aerobic fed-batch fermentor. The results are compared with those obtained using a heuristic random optimizer

Advanced ceramics are being developed for use in large area, high voltage devices in order to achieve high specific energy densities (greater than 10^6/ J/m^3/) and physical size reduction. Initial materials based on slip cast TiO2 exhibited a high bulk breakdown strength (BDS greater than 300 kV/cm) and high permittivity with low dispersion (epsilon approximately equal to 100). However, strong area and thickness dependencies were noted. To increase the BDS, multilayer dielectric compositions are being developed based on glass/TiO2 composites. The addition of glass increases the density (approximately equal to 99.8% theoretical), forms a continuous grain boundary phase, and also …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Titanium dioxide ceramics (TiO2) are candidate materials for high energy density pulsed power devices. Experiments to quantify the dielectric strength of TiO2 have been performed on a limited number of unoptimized samples. A high voltage test set was constructed to test the titanium dioxide. All samples had a relative dielectric constant of 100, all samples were of 3 mm nominal thickness, and all tests were performed in water dielectric to reduce the effect of the triple point field enhancement at the electrode edge. Both single layer and laminated samples were tested and the breakdown field strengths were recorded. Voltage risetimes …

Nuclear Fuel Pellet Inspection Using Artificial Neural Networks, Shahla Keyvan, Xiaolong Song, Mark Kelly
Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nuclear fuel must be of high quality before being placed into service in a reactor. Fuel vendors currently use manual inspection for quality control of fabricated nuclear fuel pellets. In order to reduce workers' exposure to radiation and increase the inspection accuracy and speed, the feasibility of automation of fuel pellet inspection using artificial neural networks (ANNs) is studied in this paper. Three kinds of neural network architectures are examined for evaluation of the ANN performance in proper classification of good versus bad pellets. Two supervised neural networks, back-propagation and fuzzy ARTMAP, and one unsupervised neural network called ART2-A are …

Double-Talk Robust Fast Converging Algorithms For Network Echo Cancellation, T. Gansler, Steven L. Grant, J. Benesty, M. M. Sondhi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Echo cancelers which cover longer impulse responses (greater than or equal to 64 ms) are desirable. Long responses create a need for more rapidly converging algorithms in order to meet the specifications for network echo cancelers devised by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union). In general, faster convergence implies a higher sensitivity to near-end disturbances, especially "double-talk". Recently, a fast converging algorithm called proportionate NLMS (normalized least mean squares) algorithm (PNLMS) has been proposed. This algorithm exploits the sparseness of the echo path. In this paper we propose a method for making the PNLMS algorithm more robust against double-talk. The slower …

Predictive Head Tracking For Virtual Reality, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, T. P. Caudell
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In virtual reality (VR), head movement is tracked through inertial and optical sensors. Computation and communication times result in delays between measurements and updating of the new frame in the head mounted display(HMD). These delays result in problems, including motion sickness. We use recurrent and time delay neural networks to predict the head location and use it to calculate the new frame. A predictability analysis is used in designing the prediction system

A theoretical formulation is presented that can be used to describe the dynamic behavior of frontal chromatography of proteins in columns packed with adsorbent particles in which restricted pore diffusion of the adsorbate molecules occurs. The results of this work clearly indicate that the time for breakthrough and the effective utilization of the adsorptive capacity of the chromatographic particles increase as (a) the size of the adsorbate and/or ligand (active site) molecule decreases, (b) the pore connectivity, n(T), of the porous network of the adsorbent particles increases, and (c) the column length, L, increases. Network Modeling Of The Intraparticle Convection And Diffusion Of Molecules In Porous Particles Packed In A Chromatographic Column, J. J. Meyers, Athanasios I. Liapis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A pore network model (cubic lattice network) is constructed to represent the porous structure in a column packed with porous chromatographic particles. Expressions are developed and used to determine, through the utilization of the pore network model, the intraparticle interstitial fluid velocity and pore diffusivity of a solute as the pore connectivity, n(T), of the porous medium is varied from 2.6 to 6.0. The results show that the intraparticle interstitial velocity and the pore diffusivity increase significantly as the value of the pore connectivity, n(T), increases, and clearly indicate that the pore connectivity, n(T), plays a key role in determining …

Determination Of The Tensile And Shear Strengths Of Screws And The Effect Of Screw Patterns On Cold-Formed Steel Connections, Marc Allen Sokol, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE This report summarizes two studies related to the design of cold-formed steel connections. The study topics included the creation of a test standard for determining the strength of a screw, and the determination of the strength of a screw connection. A standard test protocol does not exist for determining the strength of a screw. Today, manufacturers use test protocols developed for their products. Thus, there is no consistency in defining the structural performance of a screw. A test standard has been developed. The standard used as its model the American Society of Testing and Material's F 606, Standard Test …

The purpose of PowerGraf is to present a graphical user interface (GUI) and a convenient tool for building one-line diagrams displaying data. The GUI is open and friendly for power systems design, analysis and control, because a picture provides a better illustration of cause-and-effect relationships than a tabular printout does. Basic elements such as buses, lines and transformers are given such that the power system topology is easily drawn with this tool, and the system parameters are entered on the picture and checked visually. This enables the power system topology and the system data to be shown on one picture …

An on-line nonlinear receding horizon control algortithm is employed in order to achieve setpoint tracking targets in the context of liquid composite molding processes. The robustness of this control strategy against process-model deviations is tested. Finally, recursive parameter estimation is employed as a means of actively enhancing the performance of the process control algorithm. © 1998 AACC.

Vacancy Clustering In Quenched Al-Li Solid Solution Alloys Studied By Doppler Broadening Spectroscopy, Hollis P. Leighly, P. G. Coleman
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The clustering of vacancies in severely quenched Al-Li solid solution alloys, with Li content between 230 and 2760 ppm, has been studied using Doppler broadening spectroscopy. The alloy samples were initially annealed at 873 K in dry air or dry, pure nitrogen. The onset temperature for vacancy clustering in samples initially annealed in air was found to be 150 ± 10 K, 40 ± 15 K lower than for the nitrogen-annealed samples. This result is consistent with the migration of divacancies, formed as a result of the significant increase in vacancy concentration caused by Li migration to, and oxidation at, …

Specific Heat And Transport “Anomalies” In Mixed Alkali Glasses, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow, James J. Hudgens
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We show that changes in the relative mole fractions of Li2O and Na2O in alkali metaphosphate glasses lead to “anomalies” in the specific heat and structural relaxations. The heat capacity change between the liquid and glassy states, Δcp(Tg), at the calorimetric glass transition temperature, Tg, exhibits a minimum when the mole fractions of Li2O and Na2O are comparable. Moreover, systematic changes in the temperature dependence of the viscosity, η, i.e., changes in the “fragility” of the system, accompany these changes in mole fraction. This observed dependence …

Buckling Mode Interaction In Cold-Formed Steel Columns And Beams, C. Jiang, Viorel Ungureanu, J. Michael Davies
Buckling Mode Interaction In Cold-Formed Steel Columns And Beams, C. Jiang, Viorel Ungureanu, J. Michael Davies
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The buckling behaviour of cold-formed steel columns and beams is far from simple. The three generic forms of buckling, namely local buckling, distortional buckling and overall buckling, generally have different wavelengths and are usually restricted to different span ranges. However, there is also the possibility of interaction among these buckling modes at a certain span length. Thus, local plate buckling and distortional buckling may occur together with lateral-torsional buckling in such a way that they all have an influence on the ultimate load carrying capacity of a member. The influence of local buckling is taken into consideration in design codes …

Spacing Of Connections In Compression Flanges Of Built-Up Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu, Michael L. Jones
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Built-up cold-formed steel sections may offer greater economy in building construction. Typical built-up sections are cellular decks or door and window header beams. A research project was initiated to determine if the current spacing criteria outlined in Section D1.2 of the AISI Specification accurately predicted the capacity of built-up sections with the cover plate in compression. This study showed that criteria No.2 of the AISI Design Specification spacing criteria is restrictive when applied to built-up cross sections in bending. All test sections continued to carry additional load after the cover plate buckled. The tests showed that as the spacing of …

Bending Tests Of Hat Sections With Multiple Longitudinal Stiffeners, V. V. Acharya, R. M. Schuster
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
This paper is the first in a series of articles that report findings of the authors investigation into the behavior of cold formed steel hat sections in bending with multiple intermediate longitudinal stiffeners. Presented in this paper is the test program that was carried out at the University of Waterloo as part of a two year research program. It is known that sections with multiple intermediate stiffeners can fail either in a local sub-element buckling mode, or alternatively, can experience an overall plate buckling mode of failure. Although both failure modes were examined, the main objective was to develop a …

Experimental Procedures For Stub Column Tests, Y. Pu, M. H. R. Godley, R. G. Beale
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
In this paper a total of 36 stub columns was tested by two different experimental procedures, namely the FEM and AISI procedures, to investigate the difference in the ultimate load between these procedures. Of these 26 were carried out in the pin-ended condition according to FEM, the rest were in the fixed-end condition according to AlSI specification. It is shown that the failure loads obtained by the two experimental procedures were very close to each other. Both procedures worked well. The AISI procedure is recommended as the standard procedure.
