Biotreatment And Chemical Speciation Of Lead And Zinc Mine/Mill Wastewater Discharges In Missouri, U.S.A., Mujde Erten-Unal, Bobby G. Wixson

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Continued mining development in the world's largest lead producing area has generated and increased concern over effective mine water treatment in Missouri's New Lead Belt. A new type of mine/mill wastewater treatment system was constructed which consisted of a tailings pond followed by a series of artificially constructed meandering biotreatment channels and a polishing lagoon. This system provided additional retention time and distance for the removal of heavy metals by abundant aquatic plants and sedimentation. Seasonal field sampling and analytical testing that evaluated the present system confirmed that it provided good treatment for removal of heavy metals within the company …

Polarized x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at all La, Pa and Cu sites were used to study local structural features that accompany the strong Tc suppression at x similar to 1/8 in La2-xBaxCuO6. Two critical parameters regulating the strength of hole-lattice coupling in this material were determined, i.e., the direction and magnitude of CuO6 octahedra local tilts. Our findings include the existence of large disorder in the magnitude of the tilt angle about its average value {theta}, with an rms {radical}{delta} {theta}{sup 2}] {approx_equal} 2{theta}. We suggest that this large disorder …

Slip Modulus Of Frp Sheets Bonded To Concrete, Y. J. Lee, T. E. Boothby, C. E. Bakis, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analytical tension-stiffening model was developed for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets bonded to reinforced concrete based on equilibrium equations and the assumption of linear behavior between bond stress and slip. Experimental measurements were made on small- and large-scale specimens. For the small-scale specimens, the primer coat thickness (adhesive thickness between concrete and FRP sheet) was varied for each specimen. By comparisons of the experimental data to the analytical results, the slip modulus at the concrete/FRP sheet and concrete/steel interface was established at the service load level. From this study, it was found that primer coat thickness has a modest influence …

Mechanical testing and surface fractography were used to characterize the fracture of E-glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites as a function of the silane coupling agent used. gamma-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and delta-aminobutyltriethoxysilane (ABS) were used because these have been shown to have different interfacial mobilities at multilayer coverage. The values of the properties studied generally increased from untreated c, as determined from a Mode I translaminar fracture toughness tests, for the untreated composites (10.5 ± 0.4 kJ/m2) was lower than that for the ABS-treated composites (14.3 ± 2.1 kJ/m2) which was lower than that for the APS-treated composites (17.1 ± 2.4 kJ/m2). …

Charge Fluctuations In Yba2cu3o7-X High-Temperature Superconductors, Herbert A. Mook, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding the behavior of the electrons in the high-temperature copper oxide superconductors remains a challenging problem. An important class of models1,2,3,4,5 argues that the distribution of electronic charge and spin is not homogeneous: rather, spin and charge adopt a dynamic arrangement in which the spins on the copper form antiferromagnetic stripes, separated by domain walls containing the charge1,2,3,4,5. The dynamic behavior of the spins has been extensively studied by neutron scattering, and recent results have shown that the low-frequency fluctuations for different classes of materials display a universal spatial behavior that is consistent with the stripe picture. But arguments for …

The Weights Of Various Features In The Magnetic Spectra Of Cuprates, G. Aeppli, S. M. Hayden, Pengcheng Dai, Herbert A. Mook, R. D. Hunt, T. G. Perring, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We review briefly the magnetic fluctuation spectra, obtained by neutron scattering, of the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.6 (Tc = 62.7 K). The resonance at 34 meV is the most prominent spectral feature in the superconducting state. Even so, its net weight accounts for a mere 1% of the total squared moment expected for planar Cu2+ ions. For context, we also provide a discussion of the spectral weights associated with the magnetic order and spin waves in two-dimensional S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We demonstrate a GaAs-based p-i-n resonant-cavity-enhanced (RCE) GalnNAs photodetector operating near 1.3 µm. The device design was optimized using a transfer matrix method and experimental absorption spectra obtained from p-i-n structures grown without a resonant cavity. The RCE photodetector was fabricated in a single growth step by using GaAs/AlAs distributed Bragg reflectors for the top and bottom mirrors. A 72% quantum efficiency was obtained with a full width at half maximum of 11 nm.

Assessment Of Environmental Performance Of Rapid Prototyping And Rapid Tooling Processes, Yanchun Luo, Ming-Chuan Leu, Zhiming Ji

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for assessing the environmental performance of solid freeform fabrication (SFF) based rapid prototyping and rapid tooling processes is presented in this paper. In this method of assessment, each process is divided into a number of life stages. The environmental effect of each process stage is analyzed and evaluated based on an environmental index utilizing the Eco-indicators that were compiled by PreConsultants of the Netherlands. The effects of various life stages are then combined to obtain the environmental performance of a process. In the assessment of SFF processes, we consider the material use in the fabrication of a part, …

Rapid Tooling By Integrating Electroforming And Solid Freeform Fabrication Techniques, Bo Yang, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes a rapid tooling process that integrates solid freeform fabrication (SFF) with electroforming to produce metal tools including molds, dies, and electrical discharge machining (EDM) electrodes. Based on experimental data analysis, the geometry and material of the SFF part, the properties of the electroformed metal, and the process parameters are significant factors that cause inaccuracy in the manufactured tools. Thermomechanical modeling and numerical simulation is used to determine the geometry of the SFF part and the electroform thickness for minimizing the manufacturing time and cost while satisfying the tooling accuracy requirement.

Models For Magnetoresistance In Tunnel Junctions, Shi C. Zhang, P. M. Levy Aug 1999

Models For Magnetoresistance In Tunnel Junctions, Shi C. Zhang, P. M. Levy

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show there are putative pitfalls when one predicts the magnetoresistance of magnetic tunnel junctions (JMR) based on different toy models. Amongst them are the sensitivity of the MR to the details of the profile of the potential barrier between the metallic electrodes and the insulating barrier, and the common assumption of only one band of electrons. We indicate the ingredients that are necessary to obtain a more complete description of the JMR of magnetic tunnel junctions.

Emi Associated With Inter-Board Connection For Module-On-Backplane And Stacked-Card Configurations, Xiaoning Ye, Jim Nadolny, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

EMI associated with inter-board connection was studied through common-mode current measurements and FDTD modeling for stacked-card and module-on-backplane configurations. Three types of connections were investigated experimentally including an open pin field connection, an "ideal" semi-rigid coaxial cable connection, and a production connector. Both microstrip and stripline signal routing on the PCB were investigated. The results indicated signal routing on the PCBs or the inter-board connection can dominate the EMI process. Several cases of connector geometries were studied using FDTD modeling and good agreement was achieved between the measured and FDTD results.

Slot And Aperture Coupling For Airflow Aperture Arrays In Shielding Enclosure Designs, Min Li, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Richard E. Dubroff, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The coupling between apertures or slots in airflow arrays is investigated numerically by means of the method of moments (MoM). Application to shielding enclosure design is of particular interest. Justification for a previously extracted simple empirical design approach for the relation between the number N and size a of apertures, and the shielding effectiveness ∼Na3 for an airflow aperture array is given. The coupling between slots is also investigated. The application limit of the empirical design approach is demonstrated.

Anticipating Emi From Coupling Between High-Speed Digital And I/O Lines, Wei Cui, Min Li, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The increasing speed of digital circuit design as well as the density of printed circuit board (PCB) layouts often result in more challenging electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems. The coupling between a high-speed digital line and an I/O line can be a primary EMI coupling path, and the attached cable a dominant radiator. This mechanism is studied and modeled herein in a multi-stage modeling fashion. EMI modeling is developed for coupling between the transmission lines, and the attached cable as the EMI antenna. Finally, the EMI is calculated for the coupled noise driving the attached cable. The agreement between the modeled …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, mutual capacitance and inductance between two coupled traces is measured and computed to validate and simplify coupling algorithms used in an expert system software package. The algorithm's applicability to common microstrip configurations is tested through comparisons between FEM based solutions, |S21| measurements and the algorithm solutions under several permutations of a test board. Adjustments to the original algorithm are proposed that reduce computation times with out significantly affecting the accuracy of the result.

Application Of A Hybrid Fem/Mom Method To A Canonical Pcb Problem, Yun Ji, J. Chen, Todd H. Hubing, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A hybrid FEM/MOM method was used to solve a canonical printed circuit board (PCB) problem. The PCB is populated with three traces. One is a signal line and the other two are I/O lines that extend beyond the boundary of the board. The finite element method (FEM) was used to model the fields in the volume around the on-board trace. The method of moments (MOM) was employed to model the equivalent surface currents on the board and the current on the off-board traces. The FEM and MOM equations were coupled by forcing the continuity of tangential fields on the dielectric …

Signal Induced Emi In Fibre Channel Cable-Connector Assemblies, Minjia Xu, S. Radu, James L. Knighten, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, L. O. Hoeft, J. T. Dibene Ii

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The EMI performance of cable-connector assemblies designed for FC-0 transmission has been studied. Two types of cable and two connector styles were evaluated. Experimental results show that the dominant radiation mechanism for short cable lengths is the common-mode current caused by source and PCB skew that leaks to the exterior of the shield via the transfer impedance of the connector. However, the cable imbalance becomes a more significant source of common-mode current than the source skew when the cable assembly is tens of meters long.

Rf Isolation Using Power Islands In Dc Power Bus Design, Jun Fan, Yong Ren, Juan Chen, David M. Hockanson, Hao Shi, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power island structures are often employed for minimizing the propagation of high-frequency noise on DC power buses. The rationale is based on introducing a series impedance in the power plane to provide isolation of a noise source from the rest of the PCB design. The power island concept is investigated herein experimentally, to determine its noise mitigation attributes and limitations. A modeling approach that is suitable for arbitrary PCB island geometries including lumped SMT decoupling capacitors is also presented. The modeling and measurements indicate that island structures can achieve some degree of isolation under certain conditions.

Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members And Connections For Cyclic Loading (Fatigue), Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE Fatigue in a structural steel member or connection is the process of initiation and subsequent growth of a crack under the action of a cyclic or repetitive load. The fatigue process commonly occurs at a stress level less than the static failure condition. Although fatigue design guidelines have existed for hot-rolled steel structural members and connection, there have been no generally accepted design guidelines in the AISI Specification for addressing fatigue in a cold-formed steel member or connection. Therefore, the intent of the research reported herein was to develop general design rules for design of cold-formed steel members and …

The creation of strategies to meet abstract goals is an important behavior exhibited by natural organisms. A situation requiring the development of such strategies is the predator-evader problem. To study this problem, Khepera robots are chosen as the competing agents. Using computer simulations the evolution of the adaptive behavior is studied in a predator-evader interaction. A bilaterally symmetrical multilayer perceptron neural network architecture with evolvable weights is used to model the “brains” of the agents. Evolutionary programming is employed to evolve the predator for developing adaptive strategies to meet its goals. To study the effect of learning on evolution a …
