Case Histories Oriented Teaching Of Geotechnical Engineering, Sukhmander Singh Aug 2008

Case Histories Oriented Teaching Of Geotechnical Engineering, Sukhmander Singh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Integration of theory and practice in the teaching of geotechnical engineering have been examined on the basis of several years of teaching of foundation engineering. Most geotechnical analyses and relationships for use in design are developed under idealized boundry conditions. It has been shown by the use of case studies that an understanding of the departure between the idealized and the real boundry conditions is essential for the practice of geotechnical engineering. The case studies have also been used to teach students that the success of a geotechnical engineer depends upon how well he/she bridges the gap (departure) between the …

Exploring Case Histories: Chocolatetown, Pa, Matthew Mauldon, Kristin Brennan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Case histories are invaluable components of civil engineering education in general and geotechnical engineering education in particular. They provide real world context for engineering methodologies studied in class, and serve as vehicles for discussing ancillary issues related to cost, communication, logistics, and many other factors. As commonly used in university courses, however, students encounter case histories as observers, and often on a fairly superficial level. Learning of concepts and methods, on the other hand, best takes place through active learning rather than through passive observation. To maximize their effectiveness as teaching tools, many case histories can be cast in a …

Foundations Of The Nation: The Hillbrow And Brixton Towers As Figurations Of National Identity In South Africa, Lizè Groenewald, Francis Legge

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In its accreditation of degrees, the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) requires the inclusion, in any curriculum, of 10% of total credits of what are termed complementary studies that encompass reflections upon environmental impact, legal matters, cultural heritage and design philosophies as they pertain to the engineering profession. By stipulating this inclusion ECSA acknowledges that engineering can no longer be regarded as a neutral, apolitical endeavour. This paper responds to the latter position and sets out to offer a broadening of the current scope of scholarly dialogue between a logical science and the human community which it serves. In …

Implications Of Swelling Clays On Asphalt Pavement Performance In Colorado, Scott Shuler Aug 2008

Implications Of Swelling Clays On Asphalt Pavement Performance In Colorado, Scott Shuler

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Asphalt pavements constructed directly over high plasticity clays appear to be more susceptible to premature cracking parallel to the gutter on curb and gutter pavement cross sections than pavements with crushed stone bases. This paper describes five factors common to two sites studied that may be contributors to this early distress. These factors are: cracking is top-down; moisture content of the subgrade soils beneath the cracks is higher than optimum; density of the subgrade soils beneath the cracks is lower than optimum; subgrade soils are highly plastic; full-depth construction; and all pavements had curb and gutter typical sections. In addition, …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Case studies are widely used in civil engineering research but not in education and training. Case studies are important in the teaching of various subjects in the field of civil engineering. Site visits can also help to facilitate the students in recognizing and understanding the behaviour of structures and systems, especially when the students do not have any idea about them. The field of civil engineering covers a wide range of structures ranging from small to mega structures. Usually, small structures are seen regularly by the student and their behaviors are easy to comprehend. But mega structures such as dams …

Landslides In Balchik –The Biggest Nature Experiment For Shore Protection In Bulgaria, Chavdar Vassilev Kolev

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The nice ancient Bulgarian town Balchik is situated on deep (70m) landslide on the Bulgarian Black Sea cost. The genesis of this enormous landslide is supposed in last geological periods when the Black Sea level had changed around 300m. The geologic structure is a celebrated combination of Sarmat limestone, marl and sensitive clay. The mechanics of failure reminds the landslides of Anchorage (Alyaska) from 1962 even without tsunami. Through 80-th and 90-th years of the last century the landslide has been protected by the complex of, maybe, all known means for Cost protection and the aim has attained. The complex …

Use Of Case Histories To Enhance Practical Geotechnical Engineering, Liaqat Ali, Sarfraz Ali

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A geotechnical case history is a complete cycle; spread over events such as, investigation, design, execution, completion, and monitoring, of understudy project. In case histories the events are continuously monitored, evaluated, modified (if required), executed and corresponding responses / effects are recorded. Case histories help us learn from the past without living in the past, their analysis envision us to enhance practical engineering in the present and future. A geotechnical case history may be performed in an organizational framework or initiated by an interested research engineer in an individual capacity. In all circumstances; a case history would aim at exploring …

Bearing Capacity Evaluation Of Long, Large-Diameter, Open-Ended Piles, Yoshiaki Kikuchi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Recent changes in port construction in Japan include the use of deeply embedded large-diameter steel pipe piles. However, little change has been made to the procedure for estimating the bearing capacity of piles. An international comparison of bearing capacity estimation techniques and examination of the bearing capacity mechanism of open-ended piles were conducted. In this study, the plugging phenomenon was thoroughly investigated by means of field loading tests, large- and small-scale laboratory experiments with X-ray CT scanner, and numerical analysis.

In this paper two case histories are addressed. The first case history describes the underpinning and reinforcement of huge retaining walls due to the crossing of the old Rossio railway station building (1886) by an underground gallery (for the Lisbon Metro). A careful study was performed for this station in order to avoid unacceptable damages. These walls sustain an embankment on which the railway platforms were built. The second case history deals with the stabilization works of a landslide in Portugal. The lessons arising from technical and non technical factors related with slides are analysed, and the anchored retaining walls …

Aging Of Sand – A Continuing Enigma?, James K. Mitchell Aug 2008

Aging Of Sand – A Continuing Enigma?, James K. Mitchell

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Sand aging, a process during which the engineering properties of clean sands such as stiffness, penetration resistance and liquefaction resistance may exhibit considerable improvement over periods of only weeks to months after deposition and/or densification by different ground improvement processes, has been shown over the past 30 years to be of considerable practical importance. Numerous examples from a range of projects are presented. Chemical, physical-mechanical, and microbiological processes are examined relative to their adequacy for explaining the observed behavior. Although chemical precipitation-cementation reactions had initially been considered a primary cause, the evidence clearly favors a secondary compression-like process during which …

Construction of high-rise towers in New York City continues to provide exciting challenges for design and construction teams. Sites are becoming increasingly more difficult to build on as “desirable” locations have long since been developed and developers are constructing on sites that were previously over looked. This paper describes two projects that provided unique challenges to the engineers and contractors. The first site is the New York Times Headquarters Tower. This site appeared to be a fairly straightforward foundation design, but became complicated as the subsurface conditions were uncovered. The second case history is the new Bank of America Tower …

Soil-Structure Interaction And Uls Design Of Complex Deep Foundations, Rolf Katzenbach, Gregor Bachmann, Christian Gutberlet Aug 2008

Soil-Structure Interaction And Uls Design Of Complex Deep Foundations, Rolf Katzenbach, Gregor Bachmann, Christian Gutberlet

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In conventional design of deep foundations, some important positive effects evolving from the interaction of the bearing elements and the subsoil (Soil-Structure Interaction) are not utilised. These positive effects especially arise when using Combined Pile-Raft Foundations (CPRFs). The application of numerical methods during the design process of such foundations, which is explicitly allowed in Eurocode 7, is capable of regarding these effects. This paper deals with an approach using numerical methods within the ULS design for complex foundations and discusses case histories where CPRFs are used as a foundation for high-rise buildings in Frankfurt am Main. The paper will be …

Application Of Simplified Models To Qualitative Geotechnical Analysis, V. A. Barvashov, P. V. Kharlamov, A. I. Naidenov, S. A. Rytov

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper describes an approach for qualifying soil-structure systems behavior, using simple numeric models – “geotoys”, reflecting the main features of the systems behavior and enabling numeric simulation of various case histories. Three case histories of major karstic sinkholes are analyzed to show that man-made structures above a karstic cavity prevent formation sinkhole. When plastic zones reach the structure periphery, the soil-structure system becomes unstable. Prior settlements could be negligible to serve as precursors. Another soil-footing-superstructure (SFSS) model is a 2D geotoy - an exact mathematical solution, used for multiple simulations (about 10,000) of SFSS sensitivity i.e., response to input …

Effect Of Geometrical Parameters On Nonlinear Soil-Structure Interaction Behavior Of Plane Frame-Soil System, Manjeet Hora, Abhay Sharma Aug 2008

Effect Of Geometrical Parameters On Nonlinear Soil-Structure Interaction Behavior Of Plane Frame-Soil System, Manjeet Hora, Abhay Sharma

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The analysis of soil-structure interaction problem is affected by various structural parameters and behavior of the soil mass. The nonlinear soil behavior plays a vital role in the redistribution of the forces in superstructure. Consequently, the forces in the frame members significantly get altered due to differential settlement of the soil mass. The study of interaction behavior due to these parameters requires the use of finite element method. The physical modeling of the interaction system is achieved by use of variety of elements. The unbounded domain of the soil mass is discretized with coupled finite-infinite elements and proper location of …

Effects Of Cyclic Test In Decreasing Damages To Structures And Roads On Gypsum Soils, Keyhan Sajedi, Bujang B. K. Huat, Jafar Bolouri Bazaz Aug 2008

Effects Of Cyclic Test In Decreasing Damages To Structures And Roads On Gypsum Soils, Keyhan Sajedi, Bujang B. K. Huat, Jafar Bolouri Bazaz

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Fine gypsum soils, when saturated and loaded, because of their high porosity, have large settlements. Compaction of the soil and removal of the load causes the soil to swell. These properties of gypsum soils cause many problems for structures built on them. For instance unsymmetrical settlement, uneven ground floor and cracks in façade are some of the problems. Likewise in road engineering, swelling of this type of soil located under the asphalt after absorbing water is one of it most important problem. So realizing and identifying the behavior of gypsum soils and effort in finding solutions for decreasing the amount …

Heave Problem In Spread Footing In Jordanian Expansive Soil, Omar Hmoud Al-Hattamleh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Spread footing foundation system is widely used here in Jordan. Cheap cost compare with other foundation type and accumulative practice makes them preferable in the construction industry. Overdesign of such footing and the lack of effective heave prediction lead to an unexpected outcome. Several residences building in Irbid province were suffered from severe crack. Subsequently, owners of these houses are enforced to leave their homes. In this paper a case study of a damaged one-storey reinforced concrete structure presented. The investigation shown that, the spread footings in the damaged part of the structure are over design, while the grade beam …

Soil information for each of the tanks is provided from different sources such as conventional boreholes, test pits, and sometimes Dilatometer tests. Three newly constructed tanks have been instrumented with piezometers and a tank base hydraulic profiler for monitoring during hydrotesting. The presented long-term settlements for the older tanks, and the short-term monitoring data collected from the hydrotested tanks are examined …

Parametric Study Of The Response Of Single Pile Under Lateral Loading At The Pile Head, Naemeh Naghavi, Mohammad Hassan Baziar Aug 2008

Parametric Study Of The Response Of Single Pile Under Lateral Loading At The Pile Head, Naemeh Naghavi, Mohammad Hassan Baziar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper presents the findings of numerical studies based on the finite difference method for assessment of single pile behavior under simple dynamic lateral loads. At first, the results of an experimental dynamic lateral load test on a pipe pile driven in to sandy soil are compared with the results of this numerical modeling and some parameters are back calculated. Then piles with different length to diameter ratio, subjected to simple harmonic vibrations (sinusoidal vibrations) with different magnitudes of load and with a range of frequencies, are modeled. The load transferred to the pile and pile head displacement is calculated. …

Tank Settlement Due To Highly Plastic Clays, Ashraf El Far, John Davie Aug 2008

Tank Settlement Due To Highly Plastic Clays, Ashraf El Far, John Davie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Settlement during hydro-testing of two 30-m diameter oil tanks was generated mostly by a layer of highly plastic clay at about 10 m depth. Based on about 5 months of readings on one of the tanks, the total predicted settlement at the tank perimeter was about 300 mm (with little differential movement) and at the center was closer to 550 mm. The settlement of a 7-m diameter water tank located close to the oil tanks followed quite a different pattern during hydro-testing. Within about 6 days, the tank had settled about 130 mm on one side, but only about 20 …
