With the incorporation of a strain gauge, this sensor platform was applied to record …

Model-Driven Design Of Materials, Gregory M. Odegard Mar 2017

Model-Driven Design Of Materials, Gregory M. Odegard

TechTalks

Thomas Edison once said “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” The Edisonian approach to materials development has been the gold standard for most of human history. However, advances in computational speeds and modeling techniques over the last couple of decades have enabled new model-driven approaches to materials development, as manifested in the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) and Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) efforts. By designing and simulating new materials in a computational environment, we can dramatically cut down on the cost and time associated with the Edisonian approach to material development. At Michigan Tech, …

Biodegradable Zinc Vascular Implant Materials, Jeremy Goldman Mar 2017

Biodegradable Zinc Vascular Implant Materials, Jeremy Goldman

TechTalks

Bioabsorbable metal stents are being developed to mitigate the long-term side effects associated with corrosion-resistant stents. A decade-long research with iron (Fe)- and magnesium (Mg)-based stent materials has concluded with little success. Fe produces a voluminous, retained oxide product in the arterial wall, whereas Mg and its alloys corrode too rapidly. A breakthrough in the field of biodegradable metallic stents was made in 2013 in our research team (Drs. Goldman – Biomedical Engineering and Drelich – Materials Science and Engineering) with the introduction of zinc (Zn) and its alloys, which are free of the flaws observed for Fe- and Mg-based …

The Influence Of Bmss On The Characterization And Modeling Of Series And Parallel Li-Ion Packs, Sandra Castano-Solis, Daniel Serrano-Jimenez, Lucia Gauchia, Javier Sanz

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

This work analyzes the effects of a BMS (battery management system) on the characterization and modeling of series and parallel connections of Li-ion cell packs. The Li-ion pack studied consists of four series modules connected in parallel. This pack has been characterized by means of charge, discharge and frequency tests. As a result of these tests, series and parallel influence on battery parameters have been determined. A model considering the effects of a BMS is established and compared with a model based on a single-cell approach. Experimental validations show that the single cell based approach gives poor results in comparison …

Mobility And Safety: Do Drivers Behave As Engineers Want Them To Behave?, Pasi T. Lautala

TechTalks

As engineers, we thrive to provide environment for safe mobility through proper geometric designs, regulations, guidance and warnings. However, safe movements are still heavily dependent on the individual behavior and reactions by the drivers/users (at least for now). Traditionally, understanding drivers’ behavior has been a difficult topic to research, but today we have increasing number of data and tools available to improve that understanding. One of the tools that has recently become available is the Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) database that provides an opportunity to investigate the behavior of almost 3,500 instrumented vehicles and drivers in six different regions of …

Batteries In-N-Out: Multiple Lives Mobility, Lucia Gauchia Feb 2017

Batteries In-N-Out: Multiple Lives Mobility, Lucia Gauchia

TechTalks

As batteries become more extended across all applications, battery second life or re-purposing is gaining traction. This adds another degree of mobility to batteries. Not only do they move with the person/mobile/vehicle during operation, but also after their life in that application ends. Then they can be re-purposed for other less demanding applications, such as residential or buildings. As batteries move in and out of applications as their performance degrades, they show an interesting mobility and life cycle analysis which presents better environmental solutions, lower costs and new opportunities.

Lowest Matric Potential In Quartz: Metadynamics Evidence, Chao Zhang, Yi Dong, Zhen Liu

Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering Publications

The lowest matric potential is an important soil property characterizing the strength of retaining water molecules and a key parameter in defining a complete soil water retention curve. However, the exact value of the lowest matric potential is still unclear and cannot be measured due to the limitation of current experimental technology. In this study, a general theoretical framework based on metadynamics was proposed to determine the lowest matric potential in quartz minerals. The matric potential was derived from partial volume free energy and can be further calculated by the difference between the adsorption free energy and self‐hydration free energy. …

Since the fall of 2004, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) has been providing global monitoring of volcanic SO2 emissions, helping to understand their climate impacts and to mitigate aviation hazards. Here we introduce a new-generation OMI volcanic SO2 dataset based on a principal component analysis (PCA) retrieval technique. To reduce retrieval noise and artifacts as seen in the current operational linear fit (LF) algorithm, the new algorithm, OMSO2VOLCANO, uses characteristic features extracted directly from OMI radiances in the spectral fitting, thereby helping to minimize interferences from various geophysical processes (e.g., O3 absorption) and measurement details (e.g., wavelength shift). To solve …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Micromonas strains of small prasinophyte green algae are found throughout the world’s oceans, exploiting widely different niches. We grew arctic and temperate strains of Micromonas and compared their susceptibilities to photoinactivation of Photosystem II, their counteracting Photosystem II repair capacities, their Photosystem II content, and their induction and relaxation of non-photochemical quenching. In the arctic strain Micromonas NCMA 2099, the cellular content of active Photosystem II represents only about 50 % of total Photosystem II protein, as a slow rate constant for clearance of PsbA protein limits instantaneous repair. In contrast, the temperate strain NCMA 1646 shows a faster clearance …

A New Gaskinetic Model To Analyze Background Flow Effects On Weak Gaseous Jet Flows From Electric Propulsion Devices, Chunpei Cai

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Recent work on studying rarefied background and jet flow interactions is reported. A new gaskinetic method is developed to investigate two closely related problems. The first problem is how a collisionless background flow can affect a highly rarefied jet flow. The rarefied jet and background flow conditions are assumed available and described with seven parameters. Gaskinetic theories are applied and formulas are obtained for the mixture properties. Simulations are performed to validate these expressions, and excellent agreement is obtained. The second problem is to recover the collisionless background and jet flow parameters with limited measurements. A group of linearized equations …

Limited Bandwidth Wireless Communication Strategies For Structural Control Of Seismically Excited Shear Structures, Benjamin Winter Jan 2017

Limited Bandwidth Wireless Communication Strategies For Structural Control Of Seismically Excited Shear Structures, Benjamin Winter

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Structural control is used to mitigate unwanted vibrations in structures when large excitations occur, such as high winds and earthquakes. To increase reliability and controllability in structural control applications, engineers are making use of semi-active control devices. Semi-active control gives engineers greater control authority over structural response versus passive controllers, but are less expensive and more reliable than active devices. However, the large numbers of actuators required for semi-active structural control networks introduce more cabling within control systems leading to increased cost.

Researchers are exploring the use of wireless technology for structural control to cut down on the installation cost …

Performance Comparison Of Binarized Neural Network With Convolutional Neural Network, Lopamudra Baruah

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Deep learning is a trending topic widely studied by researchers due to increase in the abundance of data and getting meaningful results with them. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) is one of the most popular architectures used in deep learning. Binarized Neural Network (BNN) is also a neural network which consists of binary weights and activations. Neural Networks has large number of parameters and overfitting is a common problem to these networks. To overcome the overfitting problem, dropout is a solution. Randomly dropping some neurons along with its connections helps to prevent co-adaptations which finally help in reducing overfitting. Many researchers …

Impact Of Pretreatment Methods On Fast Pyrolysis Of Biomass, Yash Donepudi Jan 2017

Impact Of Pretreatment Methods On Fast Pyrolysis Of Biomass, Yash Donepudi

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Biomass is considered a renewable source of energy with minimum carbon foot print if managed sustainably. The majority of the worlds energy is spend on transportation, and fast pyrolysis of biomass could be a potential route for production of a sustainable liquid transportation fuel. However, there are several hurdles in the conversion process. This work addresses these hurdles by investigating the impact of several pretreatment methods on fast pyrolysis including thermal pretreatment (torrefaction), comminution/grinding, mineral reduction. The impact of important parameters like heat transfer medium, conversion temperature and particle size were also investigated.

A mild thermal pretreatment of biomass (~10-15% …
