Dynamic Energy Management For Chip Multi-Processors Under Performance Constraints, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce a novel algorithm for dynamic energy management (DEM) under performance constraints in chip multi-processors (CMPs). Using the novel concept of delayed instructions count, performance loss estimations are calculated at the end of each control period for each core. In addition, a Kalman filtering based approach is employed to predict workload in the next control period for which voltage-frequency pairs must be selected. This selection is done with a novel dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) algorithm whose objective is to reduce energy consumption but without degrading performance beyond the user set threshold. Using our customized Sniper based CMP …

Treating A 20 Mm Hg Gradient Alleviates Myocardial Hypertrophy In Experimental Aortic Coarctation, David C. Wendell, Ingeborg Friehs, Margaret M. Samyn, Leanne Harmann, John F. Ladisa Oct 2017

Treating A 20 Mm Hg Gradient Alleviates Myocardial Hypertrophy In Experimental Aortic Coarctation, David C. Wendell, Ingeborg Friehs, Margaret M. Samyn, Leanne Harmann, John F. Ladisa

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Children with coarctation of the aorta (CoA) can have a hyperdynamic and remodeled left ventricle (LV) from increased afterload. Literature from an experimental model suggests the putative 20 mm Hg blood pressure gradient (BPG) treatment guideline frequently implemented in CoA studies may permit irreversible vascular changes. LV remodeling from pressure overload has been studied, but data are limited following correction and using a clinically representative BPG.

Materials and methods

Rabbits underwent CoA at 10 weeks to induce a 20 mm Hg BPG using permanent or dissolvable suture thereby replicating untreated and corrected CoA, respectively. Cardiac function was evaluated at …

Protection By Inhaled Hydrogen Therapy In A Rat Model Of Acute Lung Injury Can Be Tracked In Vivo Using Molecular Imaging, Said H. Audi, Elizabeth R. Jacobs, Xiao Zhang, Amadou K.S. Camara, Ming Zhao, Meetha M. Medhora, Benjamin Michael Rizzo, Anne V. Clough

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Inhaled hydrogen gas (H2) provides protection in rat models of human acute lung injury (ALI). We previously reported that biomarker imaging can detect oxidative stress and endothelial cell death in vivo in a rat model of ALI. Our objective was to evaluate the ability of 99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamineoxime (HMPAO) and 99mTc-duramycin to track the effectiveness of H2 therapy in vivo in the hyperoxia rat model of ALI. Rats were exposed to room air (normoxia), 98% O2 + 2% N2 (hyperoxia) or 98% O2 + 2% H2 (hyperoxia+H2) for up to 60 …

Modeling Dormant Fruit Trees For Agricultural Automation, Henry Medeiros, Donghun Kim, Jianxin Sun, Hariharan Seshadri, Shayan A. Akbar, Noha M. Elfiky, Johnny Park Oct 2017

Modeling Dormant Fruit Trees For Agricultural Automation, Henry Medeiros, Donghun Kim, Jianxin Sun, Hariharan Seshadri, Shayan A. Akbar, Noha M. Elfiky, Johnny Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Dormant pruning of fruit trees is one of the most costly and labor‐intensive activities in specialty crop production. We present a system that solves the first step in the process of automated pruning: accurately measuring and modeling the fruit trees. Our system employs a laser sensor to collect observations of fruit trees from multiple perspectives, and it uses these observations to measure parameters needed for pruning. A split‐and‐merge clustering algorithm divides the collected data into three sets of points: trunk candidates, junction point candidates, and branches. The trunk candidates and junction point candidates are then further refined by a robust …

Optimization Of Patch Antennas Via Multithreaded Simulated Annealing Based Design Exploration, James Richie, Cristinel Ababei Oct 2017

Optimization Of Patch Antennas Via Multithreaded Simulated Annealing Based Design Exploration, James Richie, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we present a new software framework for the optimization of the design of microstrip patch antennas. The proposed simulation and optimization framework implements a simulated annealing algorithm to perform design space exploration in order to identify the optimal patch antenna design. During each iteration of the optimization loop, we employ the popular MEEP simulation tool to evaluate explored design solutions. To speed up the design space exploration, the software framework is developed to run multiple MEEP simulations concurrently. This is achieved using multithreading to implement a manager-workers execution strategy. The number of worker threads is the same …

Life cycle assessment (LCA) evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on the materials and processes used to manufacture the item as well as the item’s use and disposal. The objective of this LCA was to evaluate and compare the environmental impact of a metered dose inhaler, specifically the Proventil® HFA inhaler (Merk & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, NJ, USA), and an electric nebulizer, specifically the DeVilbiss Pulmo-Aide® nebulizer (DeVilbiss, Port Washington, NY, USA). GaBi LCA software was used to model the global warming potential (GWP) of each product by using substantiated data and well-justified assumptions for the components, manufacturing, …

Boom And Bust Carbon-Nitrogen Dynamics During Reforestation, Anthony J. Parolari, Megan L. Mobley, Allan R. Bacon, Gabriel Katul, Daniel Deb. Richter, Amilcare Porporato Sep 2017

Boom And Bust Carbon-Nitrogen Dynamics During Reforestation, Anthony J. Parolari, Megan L. Mobley, Allan R. Bacon, Gabriel Katul, Daniel Deb. Richter, Amilcare Porporato

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Legacies of historical land use strongly shape contemporary ecosystem dynamics. In old-field secondary forests, tree growth embodies a legacy of soil changes affected by previous cultivation. Three patterns of biomass accumulation during reforestation have been hypothesized previously, including monotonic to steady state, non-monotonic with a single peak then decay to steady state, and multiple oscillations around the steady state. In this paper, the conditions leading to the emergence of these patterns is analyzed. Using observations and models, we demonstrate that divergent reforestation patterns can be explained by contrasting time-scales in ecosystem carbon-nitrogen cycles that are influenced by land use legacies. …

Increasing Atmospheric Humidity And Co2 Concentration Alleviate Forest Mortality Risk, Yanlan Liu, Anthony J. Parolari, Mukesh Kumar, Chang-Wei Huang, Gabriel Katul, Amilcare Porporato

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Climate-induced forest mortality is being increasingly observed throughout the globe. Alarmingly, it is expected to exacerbate under climate change due to shifting precipitation patterns and rising air temperature. However, the impact of concomitant changes in atmospheric humidity and CO2 concentration through their influence on stomatal kinetics remains a subject of debate and inquiry. By using a dynamic soil–plant–atmosphere model, mortality risks associated with hydraulic failure and stomatal closure for 13 temperate and tropical forest biomes across the globe are analyzed. The mortality risk is evaluated in response to both individual and combined changes in precipitation amounts and their seasonal …

A Novel Real-Time Non-Invasive Hemoglobin Level Detection Using Video Images From Smartphone Camera, Golam Mushih Tanimul Ahsan, Md. O. Gani, Md Kamrul Hasan, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, William Chu, Mohammad Adibuzzaman, Joshua Field Sep 2017

A Novel Real-Time Non-Invasive Hemoglobin Level Detection Using Video Images From Smartphone Camera, Golam Mushih Tanimul Ahsan, Md. O. Gani, Md Kamrul Hasan, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, William Chu, Mohammad Adibuzzaman, Joshua Field

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Hemoglobin level detection is necessary for evaluating health condition in the human. In the laboratory setting, it is detected by shining light through a small volume of blood and using a colorimetric electronic particle counting algorithm. This invasive process requires time, blood specimens, laboratory equipment, and facilities. There are also many studies on non-invasive hemoglobin level detection. Existing solutions are expensive and require buying additional devices. In this paper, we present a smartphone-based non-invasive hemoglobin detection method. It uses the video images collected from the fingertip of a person. We hypothesized that there is a significant relation between the fingertip …

A Bayesian Estimation Model For Transient Engine Exhaust Characterization Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, David Wilson, Casey Allen Sep 2017

A Bayesian Estimation Model For Transient Engine Exhaust Characterization Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, David Wilson, Casey Allen

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Comprehensive emissions models extensively use engine exhaust data from vehicle experiments to represent the relationship between fuel composition and pollutants. However, the predicted emissions from these models often neglect the effects of transients and speed-load history. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a high frequency measurement technique capable of comprehensive speciation. However, due to long residence times of exhaust within a FTIR spectrometer gas cell, FTIR measurements are contaminated by the effects of historical emissions, precluding the attainment of time-resolved engine exhaust data. This work presents a Bayesian estimation model for processing FTIR measurements to obtain accurate estimations of instantaneous …

Micro-Contacts Testing Using A Micro-Force Sensor Compatible With Biological Systems, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Dushyant Tomer Sep 2017

Micro-Contacts Testing Using A Micro-Force Sensor Compatible With Biological Systems, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Dushyant Tomer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents the performance and reliability testing of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) switches by using a micro-force sensor which was originally designed/used to conduct mechanical testing of biological cells. MEMS switches are key components for radio frequency (RF) applications due to their extremely low power consumption and small geometries over conventional technologies. However, unstable electrical contact resistance severely degrades the performance and reliability of such micro-switches. Therefore, our focus is to improve the performance and reliability of “cold” switched micro-contacts by using novel contact materials and engineered micro-contact surfaces. The contact metallurgies considered in this work are “similar” thin film …

Run-Out Based Crossed Roller Bearing Life Prediction By Utilization Of Accelerated Testing Approach And Fe Numerical Models, Luca Quagliato, Dongwook Kim, Nara Lee, Soyoung Hwang, Joseph P. Domblesky, Naksoo Kim Sep 2017

Run-Out Based Crossed Roller Bearing Life Prediction By Utilization Of Accelerated Testing Approach And Fe Numerical Models, Luca Quagliato, Dongwook Kim, Nara Lee, Soyoung Hwang, Joseph P. Domblesky, Naksoo Kim

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Surface wear and spalling phenomena are the most important factors affecting roller bearing performance and operational lifetime, in terms of number of cycles the bearing can operate. Although bearing life has been traditionally defined by the onset of spalling, as specified by international standard ISO 281, this definition does not always reflect the real operational conditions, since bearing wear can also represent a failure criterion when excessive run-out occurs. In such cases, bearing life needs to be predicted according to the amount of bearing run-out resulting from wear due to load and number of cycles. In the current study, the …

Applied Force And Semg Muscle Activity Required To Operate Pistol Grip Control In An Electric Utility Aerial Bucket, Richard W. Marklin Jr., Jonathaon E. Slightam, Mark L. Nagurka, Trent M. Wolff, Casey D. Garces, Lovely Krishen

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Electric utility line workers report high levels of fatigue in forearm muscles when operating a conventional pistol grip control in aerial buckets. This study measured the applied force and surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals from four upper extremity muscles required to operate the pistol grip control in two tasks. The first task was movement of the pistol grip in six directions (up/down, forward/rearward, clockwise/counter-clockwise), and the second task was movement of the bucket from its resting position on the truck bed to an overhead conductor on top of a 40 ft tall pole. The force applied to the pistol grip was …

A Spectral Ct Method To Directly Estimate Basis Material Maps From Experimental Photon-Counting Data, Tal Gilat Schmidt, Rina Foygel Barber, Emil Y. Sidky Sep 2017

A Spectral Ct Method To Directly Estimate Basis Material Maps From Experimental Photon-Counting Data, Tal Gilat Schmidt, Rina Foygel Barber, Emil Y. Sidky

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The proposed spectral CT method solves the constrained one-step spectral CT reconstruction (cOSSCIR) optimization problem to estimate basis material maps while modeling the nonlinear X-ray detection process and enforcing convex constraints on the basis map images. In order to apply the optimization-based reconstruction approach to experimental data, the presented method empirically estimates the effective energy-window spectra using a calibration procedure. The amplitudes of the estimated spectra were further optimized as part of the reconstruction process to reduce ring artifacts. A validation approach was developed to select constraint parameters. The proposed spectral CT method was evaluated through simulations and experiments with …

Data Improving In Time Series Using Arx And Ann Models, Hermine Nathalie Akouemo Kengmo Kenfack, Richard J. Povinelli Sep 2017

Data Improving In Time Series Using Arx And Ann Models, Hermine Nathalie Akouemo Kengmo Kenfack, Richard J. Povinelli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Anomalous data can negatively impact energy forecasting by causing model parameters to be incorrectly estimated. This paper presents two approaches for the detection and imputation of anomalies in time series data. Autoregressive with exogenous inputs (ARX) and artificial neural network (ANN) models are used to extract the characteristics of time series. Anomalies are detected by performing hypothesis testing on the extrema of the residuals, and the anomalous data points are imputed using the ARX and ANN models. Because the anomalies affect the model coefficients, the data cleaning process is performed iteratively. The models are re-learned on “cleaner” data after an …

A Long-Term Follow-Up Of Young Adults With Idiopathic Clubfoot: Does Foot Morphology Relate To Pain?, Adam Graf, Ken N. Kuo, Nikhil T. Kurapati, Joseph J. Krzak, Sahar Hassani, Angela Caudill, Ann Flanagan, Gerald F. Harris, Peter A. Smith Aug 2017

A Long-Term Follow-Up Of Young Adults With Idiopathic Clubfoot: Does Foot Morphology Relate To Pain?, Adam Graf, Ken N. Kuo, Nikhil T. Kurapati, Joseph J. Krzak, Sahar Hassani, Angela Caudill, Ann Flanagan, Gerald F. Harris, Peter A. Smith

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background:

Individuals with clubfoot, treated in infancy with either the Ponseti method or comprehensive clubfoot release, often encounter pain as adults. Multiple studies have characterized residual deformity after Ponseti or surgical correction using physical exam, radiographs and pedobarography; however, the relationship between residual foot deformity and pain is not well defined. The purpose of the current study was 2-fold: (1) to evaluate the relationship between foot morphology and pain for young adults treated as infants for idiopathic clubfoot and (2) to describe and compare pedobarographic measures and outcome measures of pain and morphology among surgically treated, Ponseti treated, and typically …

A Shared Ontology Approach To Semantic Representation Of Bim Data, Mehrdad Niknam, Saeed Karshenas Aug 2017

A Shared Ontology Approach To Semantic Representation Of Bim Data, Mehrdad Niknam, Saeed Karshenas

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC-FM) projects involve a large number of participants that must exchange information and combine their knowledge for successful completion of a project. Currently, most of the AEC-FM domains store their information about a project in text documents or use XML, relational, or object-oriented formats that make information integration difficult. The AEC-FM industry is not taking advantage of the full potential of the Semantic Web for streamlining sharing, connecting, and combining information from different domains. The Semantic Web is designed to solve the information integration problem by creating a web of structured and connected data …

Observation And Understanding Of The Initial Unstable Electrical Contact Behaviors, Wanbin Ren, Nan Jiang, Cheng Chang, Shengjun Xue, Yu Chen, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Reliable and long-lifetime electrical contact is a very important issue in the field of radio frequency microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and in energy transmission applications. In this paper, the initial unstable electrical contact phenomena under the conditions of micro-newton-scale contact force and nanometer-scale contact gap have been experimentally observed. The repetitive contact bounces at nanoscale are confirmed by the measured instantaneous waveforms of contact force and contact voltage. Moreover, the corresponding physical model for describing the competition between the electrostatic force and the restoring force of the mobile contact is present. Then, the dynamic process of contact closure is explicitly calculated …

Effect Of Multiphase Radiation On Coal Combustion In A Pulverized Coal Jet Flame, Bifen Wu, Somesh Roy, Xinyu Zhao, Michael F. Modest Aug 2017

Effect Of Multiphase Radiation On Coal Combustion In A Pulverized Coal Jet Flame, Bifen Wu, Somesh Roy, Xinyu Zhao, Michael F. Modest

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The accurate modeling of coal combustion requires detailed radiative heat transfer models for both gaseous combustion products and solid coal particles. A multiphase Monte Carlo ray tracing (MCRT) radiation solver is developed in this work to simulate a laboratory-scale pulverized coal flame. The MCRT solver considers radiative interactions between coal particles and three major combustion products (CO2, H2O, and CO). A line-by-line spectral database for the gas phase and a size-dependent nongray correlation for the solid phase are employed to account for the nongray effects. The flame structure is significantly altered by considering nongray radiation and …

On-Chip Detection Of Gel Transition Temperature Using A Novel Micro-Thermomechanical Method, Tsenguun Byambadorj, Erfan Dashtimoghadam, Mohamadali Malakoutian, Benyamin Davaji, Lobat Tayebi, James E. Richie, Chung-Hoon Lee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We present a new thermomechanical method and a platform to measure the phase transition temperature at microscale. A thin film metal sensor on a membrane simultaneously measures both temperature and mechanical strain of the sample during heating and cooling cycles. This thermomechanical principle of operation is described in detail. Physical hydrogel samples are prepared as a disc-shaped gels (200 μm thick and 1 mm diameter) and placed between an on-chip heater and sensor devices. The sol-gel transition temperature of gelatin solution at various concentrations, used as a model physical hydrogel, shows less than 3% deviation from in-depth rheological results. …

Open Source Software For Automatic Detection Of Cone Photoreceptors In Adaptive Optics Ophthalmoscopy Using Convolutional Neural Networks, David Cunefare, Leyuan Fang, Robert F. Cooper, Alfredo Dubra, Joseph Carroll, Sina Farsiu Jul 2017

Open Source Software For Automatic Detection Of Cone Photoreceptors In Adaptive Optics Ophthalmoscopy Using Convolutional Neural Networks, David Cunefare, Leyuan Fang, Robert F. Cooper, Alfredo Dubra, Joseph Carroll, Sina Farsiu

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Imaging with an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) enables direct visualization of the cone photoreceptor mosaic in the living human retina. Quantitative analysis of AOSLO images typically requires manual grading, which is time consuming, and subjective; thus, automated algorithms are highly desirable. Previously developed automated methods are often reliant on ad hoc rules that may not be transferable between different imaging modalities or retinal locations. In this work, we present a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method for cone detection that learns features of interest directly from training data. This cone-identifying algorithm was trained and validated on separate data …

Reply To Comment By Fred L. Ogden Et Al. On "Beyond The Scs-Cn Method: A Theoretical Framework For Spatially Lumped Rainfall-Runoff Response", Mark Bartlett, Anthony J. Parolari, Jeffrey Mcdonnell, Amilcare Porporato Jul 2017

Reply To Comment By Fred L. Ogden Et Al. On "Beyond The Scs-Cn Method: A Theoretical Framework For Spatially Lumped Rainfall-Runoff Response", Mark Bartlett, Anthony J. Parolari, Jeffrey Mcdonnell, Amilcare Porporato

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Though Ogden et al. list several shortcomings of the original SCS-CN method, fit for purpose is a key consideration in hydrological modelling, as shown by the adoption of SCS-CN method in many design standards. The theoretical framework of Bartlett et al. [2016a] reveals a family of semidistributed models, of which the SCS-CN method is just one member. Other members include event-based versions of the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model and TOPMODEL. This general model allows us to move beyond the limitations of the original SCS-CN method under different rainfall-runoff mechanisms and distributions for soil and rainfall variability. Future research should …

Development Of Adjustment Factors For Mepdg Pavement Responses Utilizing Finite-Element Analysis, Osman Erman Gungor, Imad L. Al-Qadi, Angeli Gamez, Jaime Hernandez

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The Mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG) provides theoretically superior methodology, as compared with its predecessor, for the design and analysis of pavement structures. The mechanistic part refers to simulating pavement–tire interaction to calculate critical responses within pavement. The empirical part means prediction of pavement distress propagation over time using transfer functions that link a critical pavement response to a particular pavement distress. The mechanistic part of MEPDG simulates tire–pavement interaction in three steps: subdivision of pavement layers; complex modulus calculation at the middepth of each sublayer, considering velocity and temperature; and running the multilayered elastic theory (MLET) software, …

Pore Resolved Simulations Of Char Particle Gasification, Greg Hingwah Fong Jul 2017

Pore Resolved Simulations Of Char Particle Gasification, Greg Hingwah Fong

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Coal is a significant source of energy in today’s world and many studies have been conducted in order to better understand and optimize its use. To address greenhouse effects associated with coal combustion, cleaner methods for harnessing its energy are being explored. One such method is gasification, a process which converts coal into syngas, a mixture consisting primarily of H2 and CO. Syngas can be used to generate electricity or to produce hydrocarbons that can be used as fuels. To better understand and optimize the process, simulations can be used to study the gasification of individual porous char particles that …

An Improved Method Of Arsenic (Iii) Removal By Reverse Osmosis Membrane, Yizhi Hou Jul 2017

An Improved Method Of Arsenic (Iii) Removal By Reverse Osmosis Membrane, Yizhi Hou

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Arsenic is a Group 1 carcinogen as there is abundant research to support that ingestion of arsenic in drinking water and food can lead to liver, lung, kidney, or bladder cancer in humans. The recommend World Health Organization (WHO) arsenic standard in drinking water is 10 µg/L, while the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of arsenic in drinking water is 10 µg/L. Globally, at least 40 million people face more than 10 µg/L arsenic contamination in their drinking water. As(III) (trivalent state, such as arsenite), and As(V) (pentavalent state, such as arsenates) are the dominant arsenic forms …

A manufacturing facility is introducing the company's first straddle mount liquid metal spiral groove bearing (SGB) on a rotating anode x-ray tube. In a manufacturing environment, it is critical that processes are robust and timely to drive down costs while also responding to market demand for improvement. There is currently a lot of variation in the anode balance process. Furthermore, there are repeatability questions surrounding the new balancing system that is used in this anode balance process. To better understand the characteristics of the new liquid metal SGB anode and the effects of measurement system variation, the measurement system will …

Evaluating Wall Shear Stress Indices To Uncover Stimuli For Restenosis And Malapposition In Stented Coronary Arteries, Ali A. Aleiou Jul 2017

Evaluating Wall Shear Stress Indices To Uncover Stimuli For Restenosis And Malapposition In Stented Coronary Arteries, Ali A. Aleiou

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The cause of coronary artery neointimal thickening leading to restenosis in ~10% of drug-eluting stents is unknown. Although research suggests adverse values of traditional wall shear stress (WSS) indices may contribute, studies to date have not accounted for stent geometry, which dictates local WSS patterns influencing drug concentration. Recently proposed WSS indices such as WSS variability and WSS exposure time (WSSET) may shed further light on restenosis or, the opposite effect, resorption. The objective of this investigation was to locally evaluate traditional and recently proposed post-stenting metrics and their respective impact on restenosis or resorption. This study used de-identified data …

Adaptive Control Of Joystick Steering In Recreational Boats, John Bayless

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis addresses the challenge of commissioning recreational boats with joystick control when the boat’s physical parameters are not known. The research was conducted by following a model-based, systems engineering approach which leveraged MATLAB simulations and scale-model physical testing. The outcome of the research is a working methodology using L1 Adaptive Control which provides fast adaption in a way that could reduce the cost of commissioning recreational boats with joystick control, improve the robustness of the final design, and potentially expand the accessible market to new boat types.

Development Of Kinematic Templates For Automatic Pronunciation Assessment Using Acoustic-To-Articulatory Inversion, Deriq K. Jones Jul 2017

Development Of Kinematic Templates For Automatic Pronunciation Assessment Using Acoustic-To-Articulatory Inversion, Deriq K. Jones

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Computer-aided pronunciation training (CAPT) is a subcategory of computer-aided language learning (CALL) that deals with the correction of mispronunciation during language learning. For a CAPT system to be effective, it must provide useful and informative feedback that is comprehensive, qualitative, quantitative, and corrective. While the majority of modern systems address the first 3 aspects of feedback, most of these systems do not provide corrective feedback. As part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded study “RI: Small: Speaker Independent Acoustic-Articulator Inversion for Pronunciation Assessment”, the Marquette Speech and Swallowing Lab and Marquette Speech and Signal Processing Lab are conducting a …
