Predicting Seizure Onset Zones From Interictal Intracranial Eeg Using Functional Connectivity And Machine Learning, Jared Pilet, Scott A. Beardsley, Chad Carlson, Christopher T. Anderson, Candida Ustine, Sean Lew, Wade Mueller, Manoj Raghavan

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Functional connectivity (FC) analyses of intracranial EEG (iEEG) signals can potentially improve the mapping of epileptic networks in drug-resistant focal epilepsy. However, it remains unclear whether FC-based metrics provide additional value beyond established epilepsy biomarkers such as epileptic spikes and high-frequency oscillations (HFOs). Using interictal iEEG data from 26 patients, we estimated FC across eight frequency bands (4–290 Hz) using amplitude envelope correlation (AEC) and phase locking value (PLV). From the resulting FC-matrices, we estimated two graph metrics each to derive 32 FC-based features. We also extracted features related to spikes, HFOs, and power spectral densities (PSD). A trained support …

The recent addition of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation per- has increased the need for research on PFAS treatment technologies for water and wastewater. Electrochemical treatment processes have been widely investigated for PFAS removal. Peroxi-electrocoagulation (electrocoagulation paired with hydrogen peroxide (EC:H2O2)) was evaluated as a novel water treatment process for PFAS mitigation due to the multimechanistic removal pathways that can proceed during treatment, including chemical degradation via oxidation, and physical separation pathways such as sorption to flocs, flotation layer accumulation, and foam fractionation. This work investigated the impacts of …

Influence Of Boundary Conditions And Blood Rheology On Indices Of Wall Shear Stress From Ivus-Based Patient-Specific Stented Coronary Artery Simulations, R. Patrick Mccarthy, Peter J. Mason, David S. Marks, John F. Ladisa Jr. May 2025

Influence Of Boundary Conditions And Blood Rheology On Indices Of Wall Shear Stress From Ivus-Based Patient-Specific Stented Coronary Artery Simulations, R. Patrick Mccarthy, Peter J. Mason, David S. Marks, John F. Ladisa Jr.

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The long-term clinical efficacy of coronary stents is limited by restenosis. Coronary stenting results in altered arterial geometry, local blood flow patterns, and wall shear stress (WSS), all of which can influence restenosis. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations employ assumptions about blood properties and boundary conditions, which also influence WSS alterations from stenting. Our objective was to evaluate three common assumptions applied with stented coronary artery CFD simulations (inlet velocity profile, outlet boundary conditions, and viscosity) to provide insight for future studies. A patient-specific right coronary artery was reconstructed from intravascular ultrasound and computed tomography imaging. Time-averaged WSS (TAWSS) and …

Development Of A Probabilistic Interaction Rule And Failure Pressure Model For Pipelines With A Colony Of Corrosion Defects, Kiswendsida J. Kere

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The interaction effect originating from a defect colony can pose a higher pipeline failure risk than the case when such possible interaction is not considered. Recognizing the limitations in existing models that can lead to inaccurate pipeline integrity assessment, the goal of this study is to develop a probabilistic interaction rule and predictive burst failure pressure model for pipelines with a colony of corrosion defects. First, a comprehensive database of burst failure pressure for pipes with a colony of corrosion is established that encompasses a wide range of influencing factors (e.g., spacing, defect sizes, and material properties) on the defect …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we present a Q-Learning optimization algorithm for smart home HVAC systems. The proposed algorithm combines new convex deep neural network models with model predictive control (MPC) techniques. More specifically, new input convex long short-term memory (ICLSTM) models are employed to predict dynamic states in an MPC optimal control technique integrated within a Q-Learning reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm to further improve the learned temporal behaviors of nonlinear HVAC systems. As a novel RL approach, the proposed algorithm generates day-ahead HVAC demand response (DR) signals in smart homes that optimally reduce and/or shift peak energy usage, reduce electricity costs, …

Involvement Of Long Non-Coding Rna (Lncrna) Malat1 In Shear Stress Regulated Adipocyte Differentiation, Justin Caron, Marjan Ghanbariabdolmaleki, Madison Marino, Chong Qiu, Bo Wang, Michael Mak, Shue Wang

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Adipocyte differentiation plays an important role in bone remodeling due to secretory factors that can directly modulate osteoblast and osteoclast, thus affecting overall bone mass and skeletal integrity. Excessive adipocyte differentiation within the bone marrow microenvironment can lead to decreased bone mass, eventually causing osteoporosis. The mechanical microenvironment of bone marrow, including fluid shear, maintains the balance of adipocyte and osteoblast differentiation during bone remodeling. However, how mechanical cues interact with long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and regulate adipocyte differentiation remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the mechanosensitive role of lncRNA MALAT1 during mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) adipocyte differentiation. By …

Optimization-Based Distributed Controller For Multi-Agents System In Microgrid Secondary Control, Fahad S. Alshammari, Ayman El-Refaie, Saleh Alyahya, Sheroz Khan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Micro-grids function to connect to power system power produced by the renewable energy resources. In islanded micro-grids, grid-forming units collaborate to maintain the micro-grids voltage and frequency by utilizing droop control technique that includes primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Secondary control intervenes to improve power sharing and restore voltage and frequency to their nominal levels. However, the conventional droop control applied to a grid with mismatched line parameters experiences a trade-off between reactive power sharing and voltage regulations. This paper applies real-time trajectory tracking convex optimization to ensure by communicating power sharing between units in a consensus topology. The optimization …

A Novel Robotic Pedaling Paradigm To Improve Lower Limb Movement Post-Stroke, Tom S. Ruopp Apr 2025

A Novel Robotic Pedaling Paradigm To Improve Lower Limb Movement Post-Stroke, Tom S. Ruopp

Dissertations (1934 -)

Prior work in our lab revealed that while impaired paretic neuromuscular output contributes to movement difficulties post-stroke, compensation is more related to interlimb coordination (ILC) deficits. Specifically, ILC deficits were revealed in the context of lower limb split-crank pedaling. Participants who demonstrated larger levels of compensation during a conventional, solid-crank pedaling task also demonstrated larger deficits in ILC i.e. maintaining a 180-degree phase relationship during split-crank. To address this deficit, our lab created a novel, split-crank pedaling robot named CUped. CUped (pronounced Cupid) is so called because it compels use of the paretic limb during a movement that resembles pedaling. …

Towards The Advancement Of Violence Recognition In Security Footage With Explainable Neural Networks, Paris Her Apr 2025

Towards The Advancement Of Violence Recognition In Security Footage With Explainable Neural Networks, Paris Her

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation investigates the problem of violence recognition in surveillance footage using computer vision and machine learning techniques. More specifically, our goal is to achieve interpretable and explainable deep learning models because violence recognition is a sensitive task. We first propose to perform violence recognition using a 3D convolutional neural network through intuitive hyperparameter tuning and transfer learning. We utilize a state-of-the-art 3D model used for general activity recognition that is lightweight and adjustable. Along with that, we introduce a data augmentation technique called "resize-within" which uses interpolation, rather than cropping, to resize the original input video to a new …

Use Of Wastewater Grit And Milorganite Chaff In Concrete, Carter Deinhammer Apr 2025

Use Of Wastewater Grit And Milorganite Chaff In Concrete, Carter Deinhammer

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Wastewater grit is a major byproduct from preliminary municipal wastewater treatment. Chaff is a collection of dried biosolids generated as a waste product from Milorganite® fertilizer production. Because landfilling is a costly and unsustainable method, the development of technologies for diverting grit from landfills to a useful product by tapping grit’s inherent values (e.g., sand and gravel) are of great interest. Chaff, consisting of fibers, provides a potential source for bolstering concrete tensile strength through internal means. This research has proposed a concept of grit and chaff additive-based concrete, an expansion of the grit-assisted patch material developed (GAP) in previous …

Flex-Fuel Mixing-Controlled Combustion Enabled By Prechamber Ignition (Pc-Mcc), Jared J. Zeman Apr 2025

Flex-Fuel Mixing-Controlled Combustion Enabled By Prechamber Ignition (Pc-Mcc), Jared J. Zeman

Dissertations (1934 -)

There is an imminent need to displace fossil diesel fuel with cleaner burning, domestically produced, renewable fuels for use in heavy-duty engines. Bioethanol is a prime candidate as it widely adopted in the U.S. as a gasoline additive ranging in volume percentage from 10% (E10) up to 85% (E85). Direct substitution of market available ethanol-gasoline blends for diesel fuel is not plausible as the stark reactivity differences would not constitute the same ignition quality nor achieve auto-ignition at all. This work focuses on the development of prechamber enabled mixing-controlled combustion (PC-MCC) as an advanced ignition strategy to facilitate reliable ignition …

While per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are not actually generated at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), utilities are being forced to consider PFAS in biosolids management plans due to mounting political pressure and pending regulations. Emerging thermal technologies including pyrolysis, gasification, and super critical water oxidation have garnered recent attention for PFAS destruction. Drying, however, is a conventional technology that might also be a tool for utilities to manage PFAS in biosolids, but research on the impacts of drying on PFAS in biosolids is scarce. The objective of this research was to determine how drying affected the fate of PFAS …

Integrated modular motor drive (IMMD) is an effective approach for realizing high-efficiency, high-power-density, and fault-tolerant electric machines. However, designing an efficient thermal management system (TMS) for the motor drive becomes a challenge, particularly due to space constraints. This article presents the design of a TMS based on 3-mm heat pipes for a 250-kW IMMD intended for aviation applications. The power electronics module is simulated using PLECS software where an electrothermal analysis is conducted. A simplified thermal resistance model of the system is developed to estimate the die junction temperature of gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors. The performance of the proposed TMS …

Activity And Function Of The Endothelial Sodium Channel Is Regulated By The Effector Domain Of Marcks-Like Protein 1 In Mouse Aortic Endothelial Cells, Ling Yu, Niharika Bala, Van-Anh L. Nguyen, Leah Kessler, John F. Ladisa Jr., Abdel A. Alli

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Enhanced endothelial sodium channel (EnNaC) functioning causes an increase in vessel stiffness. Here, we investigated the regulation of EnNaC in mouse aortic endothelial cells (mAoECs) by the actin cytoskeleton and lipid raft association protein myristoylated alanine-rich C-kinase substrate-like protein 1 (MLP1). We hypothesized that mutation of specific amino acid residues within the effector domain of MLP1 or loss of association between MLP1 and the anionic phospholipid phosphate PIP2 would significantly alter membrane association and EnNaC activity in mAoECs. mAoECs transiently transfected with a mutant MLP1 construct (three serine residues in the effector domain replaced with aspartate residues) showed a significant …

Computational Model Of Coarctation Of The Aorta In Rabbits Suggests Persistent Ascending Aortic Remodeling Post-Correction, Ashley A. Hiebing, Matthew A. Culver, John F. Ladisa, Colleen M. Witzenburg

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a common congenital cardiovascular lesion that presents as a localized narrowing of the proximal descending aorta. While improvements in surgical and catheter-based techniques have increased short-term survival, there is a high long-term risk of hypertension and a reduced average lifespan despite correction. Computational models can be used to estimate aortic remodeling and peripheral vascular compensation, potentially serving as key tools in developing a mechanistic understanding of the interplay between pre-treatment dynamics, post-treatment recovery, and long-term hypertension risk. In this study, we developed a lumped-parameter model of the heart and circulation to simulate CoA. After …

Connecting Developed Pressure – Preload Relationship In Ex-Vivo Beating Heart With Cellular Sarcomere Length – Tension Relationship, Lei Fan, Vahid Ziaei-Rad, Jason Bazil, Lik Chuan Lee

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The heart’s developed pressure (DP) in Langendorff heart experiments increases with preload via the Frank-Starling mechanism up to a critical transition point at which DP starts to decrease with preload. A similar behavior is found at the cellular level, where the tension developed by skinned cardiac fibers or myocytes in isometric tension test increases with sarcomere length up to a transition point beyond which, the tension decreases. This cellular-level behavior is termed myofilament length dependent activation. While these two behaviors are similar, they occur at vastly different scales. Specifically, the DP – preload and sarcomere length – tension relationships occur, …

Phosphorus Recovery From Synthetic Stormwater Using Iron- And Slag-Amended Green Infrastructure Soils, Colin B. Wilson, Anthony J. Parolari, Brooke Mayer, Kaushik Venkiteshwaran

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The demand for phosphorus (P), fueled by the need for fertilizers to increase food production due to the ever-increasing population, is increasing P in the environment and diminishing global reserves of this nonrenewable resource. Stormwater runoff transports land-applied P into surrounding waterbodies. Green infrastructure (GI) soils are being engineered to target P removal from stormwater runoff. This research investigates the potential to recover P from engineered GI soils traditionally developed to remove P, contributing to the circular P economy by considering GI as a source of recoverable P. Batch experiments were conducted to determine the P removal performance of iron- …

Characterizing Phosphorus Removal And Recovery Performance Of A 3d Printed Iron-Embedded Polylactic Acid Composite, Colin B. Wilson, Anthony J. Parolari, Andrew Hiestand, Brooke K. Mayer, Allison Murray

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Green infrastructure (GI) has been heralded as a solution for reducing phosphorus (P) pollution through increasing stormwater runoff infiltration and improving water quality. Despite its global implementation, GI struggles to improve the effluent water quality discharged from these systems consistently. This research evaluates the P removal performance and recovery potential of iron-embedded polylactic acid (PLA) composites through a novel application of three-dimensional (3D) printed representative unit cells (RUC) that could be used to improve effluent quality in GI. The RUC required chemical oxidation to convert the embedded iron to hematite (Fe2⁢O3) to facilitate P adsorption. Batch …
