Water treatment technologies are needed that can convert per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into inorganic products (e.g., CO2, F−) that are less toxic than parent PFAS compounds. Research on electrochemical treatment processes such as electrocoagulation and electrooxidation has demonstrated proof-of-concept PFAS removal and destruction. However, research has primarily been conducted in laboratory matrices that are electrochemically favorable (e.g., high initial PFAS concentration [μg/L–mg/L], high conductivity, and absence of oxidant scavengers). Electrochemical treatment is also a promising technology for treating PFAS in water treatment residuals from nondestructive technologies (e.g., ion exchange, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis). Future electrochemical …

Conventional wastewater treatment processes cannot effectively remove dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and soluble non-reactive phosphorus (sNRP), which can pose regulatory compliance challenges for total nitrogen and total phosphorus discharges. Moreover, DON and sNRP are not easily recoverable for beneficial reuse as part of the waste to resource paradigm. Conversion of DON and sNRP to more readily removable dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and soluble reactive phosphorus (sRP), respectively, will help meet stringent nutrient limits and facilitate nutrient recovery. In this study, electro-oxidation (EO) was evaluated for conversion of four DON compounds to DIN and five sNRP compounds to sRP. EO was …

Articular cartilage has unique load-bearing properties but has minimal capacity for intrinsic repair. Here, we used three-dimensional weaving, additive manufacturing, and autologous mesenchymal stem cells to create a tissue-engineered, bicomponent implant to restore hip function in a canine hip osteoarthritis model. This resorbable implant was specifically designed to function mechanically from the time of repair and to biologically integrate with native tissues for long-term restoration. A massive osteochondral lesion was created in the hip of skeletally mature hounds and repaired with the implant or left empty (control). Longitudinal outcome measures over 6 months demonstrated that the implant dogs returned to …

Background
Changes in cerebral blood flow in response to neuronal activation can be measured by time-dependent fluctuations in hemoglobin species within the brain; this is the basis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). There is a clinical need for portable neural imaging systems, such as fNIRS, to accommodate patients who are unable to tolerate an MR environment.
Objective
Our objective was to compare task-related full-head fNIRS and fMRI signals across cortical regions.
Methods
Eighteen healthy adults completed a same-day fNIRS-fMRI study, in which they performed right- and left-hand finger tapping tasks and a semantic-decision tones-decision …

A hallmark of human locomotion is that it continuously adapts to changes in the environment and predictively adjusts to changes in the terrain, both of which are major challenges to lower limb amputees due to the limitations in prostheses and control algorithms. Here, the ability of a single-network nonlinear autoregressive model to continuously predict future ankle kinematics and kinetics simultaneously across ambulation conditions using lower limb surface electromyography (EMG) signals was examined. Ankle plantarflexor and dorsiflexor EMG from ten healthy young adults were mapped to normal ranges of ankle angle and ankle moment during level overground walking, stair ascent, and …

Contributions Of Implicit And Explicit Memories To Sensorimotor Adaptation Of Movement Extent During Goal-Directed Reaching, Devon D. Lantagne, Leigh A. Mrotek, Rebecca Slick, Scott A. Beardsley, Danny G. Thomas, Robert A. Scheidt
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
We examined how implicit and explicit memories contribute to sensorimotor adaptation of movement extent during goal-directed reaching. Twenty subjects grasped the handle of a horizontal planar robot that rendered spring-like resistance to movement. Subjects made rapid “out-and-back” reaches to capture a remembered visual target at the point of maximal reach extent. The robot’s resistance changed unpredictably between reaches, inducing target capture errors that subjects attempted to correct from one trial to the next. Each subject performed over 400 goal-directed reaching trials. Some trials were performed without concurrent visual cursor feedback of hand motion. Some trials required self-assessment of performance between …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Effect of 0.7 wt% and 1.0 wt% of Zr alloying on the laser powder bed fused (LPBF) printability/buildability of AA5083 alloys was investigated by examination of the microstructure and mechanical property. General corrosion behavior of these Zr-modified AA5083 alloys produced by LPBF in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was also examined and compared to the LPBF AlSi10Mg alloy and AA5083-H131 alloy. Unmodified AA5083 alloy produced by LPBF exhibited extensive solidification cracks, but alloying it with Zr mitigated the cracking due to the grain refinement from the formation of the primary L12-Al3Zr. Moreover, 1.0 wt% of Zr alloying …
The Coalescence Of Incipient Soot Clusters, Akaash Sharma, Khaled Mosharraf Mosharraf Mukut, Somesh Roy, Eirini Goudeli
The Coalescence Of Incipient Soot Clusters, Akaash Sharma, Khaled Mosharraf Mosharraf Mukut, Somesh Roy, Eirini Goudeli
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to investigate the coalescence of incipient soot clusters. Initially, one thousand acetylene molecules collide and react with each other, allowing bond breakage and new bond formation upon collision, leading to various species (e.g., linear hydrocarbons, branched polyaromatic hydrocarbons) up to the formation of nascent soot clusters with diameter of up to 3.5 nm. The structure and composition of the formed soot clusters are quantified by the packing density and carbon-to-hydrogen (C/H) ratio, respectively, during nucleation and up to the formation of large nascent soot nanoparticles. Then, the nucleated incipient soot clusters are isolated …
Gaze Estimation And Tracking For Assisted Living Environments, Paris Her
Gaze Estimation And Tracking For Assisted Living Environments, Paris Her
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Assisted living environments must be able to efficiently and unobtrusively gather information on a person's well-being. Human gaze direction provides some of the strongest indicators of how a person behaves and interacts with their environment. To that end, this thesis proposes a gaze tracking method that uses a neural network regressor to estimate gaze direction from facial keypoints and integrates them over time using various temporal methods, specifically through moving averages and a Kalman filter. Our gaze regression model uses confidence gated units to handle cases of keypoint occlusion and is able to estimate its own prediction uncertainty. This approach …
Development Of Experimental And Numerical Methods For Investigations Of High-Octane Fuels In Heavy-Duty Applications, Jared James Zeman
Development Of Experimental And Numerical Methods For Investigations Of High-Octane Fuels In Heavy-Duty Applications, Jared James Zeman
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Increasingly stringent emissions regulations has threatened the existence of the internal combustion (IC) engine. In some transportation sectors, non-IC engine powertrains have the potential to be a logical solution. However, in the heavy-duty sector, the IC engine is predicted to remain the dominant propulsion method for the foreseeable future. With ever-increasing demand for heavy-duty power generation platforms, the primary focus for the development of the future heavy-duty IC engine needs to be on increasing engine efficiency and the adoption of lowlife-cycle carbon, clean burning fuels, e.g. methanol. The fuel ignition properties of these fuels, e.g. high octane, cause difficulties when …
Improving Presentation Consistency Of Radiographic Images Using Deep Learning, Najib Akram Maheen Aboobacker
Improving Presentation Consistency Of Radiographic Images Using Deep Learning, Najib Akram Maheen Aboobacker
Master's Theses (2009 -)
In general radiography, inconsistency of brightness and contrast in initial presentation is a common complaint from radiologists. Inconsistencies, which may be a result of variations in patient positioning, dose, protocol selection andimplant could lead to additional workflow by technologists and radiologists to adjust the images. To tackle this challenge posed by conventional histogram-based display approach, first a Deep Learning based Brightness Contrast (DL BC) algorithm to improve the consistency in presentation by using a residual neural network trained to classify X-ray images based on a novel NxM grid of brightness and contrast combinations is proposed. More than 8,500 unique images …

Changes In Air-Quality In Milwaukee, Wi Due The Covid-19 Lockdown, Nathan Hay
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Shortly after COVID-19 started spreading across the country, Wisconsin instituted their shutdown on March 23rd, 2020. With large swaths of the population forced to stay at home, this presented a unique case study to evaluate the effects of reduced traffic volumes on vehicle related emissions. To do so, this study measured air quality on a 40-mile route within Milwaukee County on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 4 to 6 PM from the beginning of April until the end of August. Mobile sensors – a Sniffer 4D and micro aethalometer – were attached to a car and collected particulate matter (1.0-10 μm), …
Hemodynamic Evaluation Of Reconstructed Arch Geometries After Norwood Procedure Vs Non-Operated Controls, Aloma Blanch Granada
Hemodynamic Evaluation Of Reconstructed Arch Geometries After Norwood Procedure Vs Non-Operated Controls, Aloma Blanch Granada
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital cardiovascular defect where the left side of the heart and related structures cannot support systemic cardiac output. The Norwood procedure, performed in the first days of life, creates a neo-aorta along with arch reconstruction to provide unobstructed systemic output from the well-developed right ventricle. To evaluate the qualities of the patients reconstructed arch geometry, we aim to characterize hemodynamics within the reconstructed arch by including the head and neck arteries, pulmonary arteries, and Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt. Prior studies have studied reconstructed arch geometry, but the current project adds more complexity to increase …
Pore-Resolving Simulations To Study The Impacts Of Char Morphology On Zone Ii Combustion And Effectiveness Factor Models, Dongyu Liang, Simcha L. Singer
Pore-Resolving Simulations To Study The Impacts Of Char Morphology On Zone Ii Combustion And Effectiveness Factor Models, Dongyu Liang, Simcha L. Singer
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Combustion and gasification of pulverized char often occur under zone II conditions, in which the rate of conversion depends on both heterogeneous reaction and gas transport within the particle's porous structure. The morphology of porous char has a strong influence on intra-particle diffusion, and thus, on the overall conversion rate. Because pulverized coal and biomass char particles are often irregularly shaped and contain pores and voids which can approach the size of the particles themselves, conventional models based on spherical symmetry and coarse-grained, upscaled, effective continuum conservation equations are not applicable or appropriate. A recent 3-D, pore-resolving CFD simulation approach …

In this two-part paper, we propose a novel medium access control (MAC) protocol for machine-type communications in the Industrial Internet of Things. The considered use case features a limited geographical area and a massive number of devices with sporadic data traffic and different priority types. We target supporting the devices while satisfying their Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements with a single access point and a single channel, which necessitates a customized design that can significantly improve the MAC performance. In Part I of this paper, we present the MAC protocol that comprises a new slot structure, corresponding channel access procedure, and mechanisms …

Mac For Machine-Type Communications In Industrial Iot—Part Ii: Scheduling And Numerical Results, Jie Gao, Mushu Li, Weihua Zhuang, Xuemin Shen, Xu Li
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In the second part of this article, we develop a centralized packet transmission scheduling scheme to pair with the protocol designed in Part I and complete our medium access control (MAC) design for machine-type communications in the industrial Internet of Things. For the networking scenario, fine-grained scheduling that attends to each device becomes necessary, given stringent Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements and diversified service types, but prohibitively complex for a large number of devices. To address this challenge, we propose a scheduling solution in two steps. First, we develop algorithms for device assignment based on the analytical results from Part I, when …

The control of infectious diseases is a critical challenge in developing and developed nations alike. Humans can be exposed to pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria through numerous routes of transmission, including waterborne transmission. Accordingly, effective water disinfection processes are paramount for public health protection. In this study, the inactivation efficacy of P22 virus and Escherichia coli bacteria was tested using ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs), which provided effective disinfection of both waterborne microorganisms. Using a peak wavelength emission of 255, 265, or 285 nm, the batch-test, UV LED collimated beam system demonstrated high inactivation potential for both microorganisms …

Required microstructural attributes of an alloy vary with structural applications. The microstructural fine-tuning capability of laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) enables application specific manufacture of the components. Such manufacture with L-PBF AM requires alloys that exhibit wide processing window and are amenable to multiple deformation mechanisms. However, high hot cracking susceptibility of Al alloys poses a barrier to such printability-performance synergy. In this work we show that an integration of, a) grain refinement through heterogeneous nucleation, and b) eutectic solidification, leads to crack-free parts at wide range of process parameters, microstructural heterogeneity, and hierarchy in the Al-Ni-Ti-Zr …

Agility of additive manufacturing (AM) warrants a development of an equally agile, high-throughput properties evaluation technique that can efficiently assess properties of AM specimens as functions of materials and process variables. High throughput (HTP) tensile testing rig has been developed, enabled by miniature sample design and Python based control codes for a full automation of testing and data processing. The rig is capable of testing 60 specimens per hour, much faster than conventional tensile testing. To luminate the merit of its use, an efficient process optimization workflow based on HTP testing is proposed and demonstrated on laser powder bed fusion …

In-situ water treatment can be accomplished using electrochemical treatments such as electrocoagulation (EC), which generates coagulants, and electrooxidation (EO), which generates oxidants (e.g., free chlorine and reactive oxygen species) via electrolysis using boron-doped diamond electrodes. In sequential EC-EO, EC can remove oxidant scavengers present in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), thereby improving the efficacy of downstream oxidation via EO. This study evaluated sequential EC-EO (and each process independently for comparison) for mitigating the trace organic compounds (TOrCs) acyclovir (ACY), trimethoprim (TMP), and benzyldimethyldecylammonium chloride (BAC-C10) in model groundwaters and surface waters. EO-only removed greater than 70% of ACY and TMP but …

This study combined multiple approaches to evaluate the structural and economic impact of using new-generation wide-base tires (NG-WBT) in New Brunswick, Canada. A three-dimensional finite-element model of a typical pavement structure used in New Brunswick was used to predict critical pavement responses. The model includes measured tire-pavement contact forces among other variables overlooked in conventional flexible pavement analysis approaches. Using the model output, regression analysis was performed to predict the responses under various loadings to avoid performing the time-consuming finite-element analysis. Eight-year weight-in-motion data and critical pavement responses were used in transfer functions to predict pavement damage and the corresponding …

A new single-carrier sensor-less pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method using suggested pseudo reference functions is proposed for packed U-cell (PUC) converter to improve performance and reliability of the PUC converter. It is composed of one PWM carrier signal and two suggested pseudo reference functions. By employing the proposed modulation method, the PUC dc capacitor voltage ripple is substantially decreased, and faster sensor-less capacitor voltage balancing is obtained. Moreover, the power losses are evenly distributed among all power switches. Consequently, notable reduction of the PUC dc capacitor voltage ripple and even distribution of the power loss among switches enhance the PUC converter's …

For additive manufacturing such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), commercial aluminum alloy (AA) 6061 is typically considered unsuitable due to formation of solidification cracking and/or excessive porosity. In this study, to improve buildability/printability of AA6061, 1 wt% of Zr was alloyed to produce Zr-modified AA6061 by LPBF. Powders of unmodified and Zr-modified AA6061 were produced by gas atomization, and utilized as a feed-stock for the LPBF to fabricate specimens for microstructural examination and mechanical testing. The as-built unmodified AA6061 exhibited poor printability due to formation of cracks and porosity in the microstructure regardless of LPBF parameters. However, the Zr-modified …

Since its commercial introduction in the early 1980s, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has become an important medical diagnostic tool for radiologists. Researchers and manufacturers have refined the imaging hardware and expanded the intended uses for MRI devices over time. However, MRI manufacturers have not improved the design of the mechanisms and control schemes used to move the patient.Patient positioning systems are required to handle unknown weights up to 225 kilograms, accommodate friction disturbances, move long distances at high speed, move small distances in less than 1 second, and attain sub millimeter bidirectional precision. Little research is available on model …
