Balancing Mixed-Model Assembly Line To Reduce Work Overload In A Multi-Level Production System, Pravin Y. Tambe Jan 2006

Balancing Mixed-Model Assembly Line To Reduce Work Overload In A Multi-Level Production System, Pravin Y. Tambe

LSU Master's Theses

Generating the optimal production schedule for an assembly line, which will balance the workload at all the production stages, is a difficult task considering a variety of practical constraints. Varying customer demand is an important factor to be considered when designing an assembly line. In order to respond to varying customer demand, many companies are attempting to make their production system more flexible/agile or adaptable to change. Due to the volatile nature of market, companies cannot afford to manufacture same type of product for long period of time and neither can maintain high inventory level; to tackle this problem we …

Modeling Fabrication And Characterization Of A Bio-Micro Thermoelectric Device For Highly Localized Temperature Control, Aparna Prabhakar

LSU Master's Theses

There is an ever expanding interaction between the fields of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and biology to develop devices to monitor, control and act on living systems. Particularly in the field of cryobiology, there is a need to monitor and control temperature at the cellular level. An important step towards achieving this aim is to fabricate an array of microscale thermoelectric actuators. As a first step for towards achieving such localized control of temperatures in cells and tissues, an array of individually addressable micro-thermoelectric coolers (µTECs) were modeled, characterized, and fabricated. Prefabrication experimentation and modeling were carried out to understand the …

Modeling Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Confined Concrete Cylinders, Indrani V. Volety Jan 2006

Modeling Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Confined Concrete Cylinders, Indrani V. Volety

LSU Master's Theses

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) confined concrete columns have been developed for new construction and rebuilding of concrete piers/piles in engineering structures. Design of these FRP confined concrete columns requires an accurate estimate of the performance enhancement due to the confinement mechanism. Therefore, the key is to develop a confinement model, a model that relates the confined concrete strength with the unconfined concrete strength and the confining pressure provided by the FRP. Due to its closed-form expression and ease of application, design-oriented confinement models predominate in designing FRP confined concrete columns. Design oriented models are directly based on the interpretation of …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study Of Grain Boundary Migration In Nanocrystalline Pd, Shengyu Wang Jan 2006

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study Of Grain Boundary Migration In Nanocrystalline Pd, Shengyu Wang

LSU Master's Theses

We present a new methodology for measuring the grain boundary mobility for curved boundaries using molecular-dynamics simulation of grain growth in a small, specifically tailored Pd nanocrystalline structure. In the model system, the boundaries move under the forces provided by their curvature and in the presence of the triple junctions. As a consequence of grain boundary migration the boundary area per unit volume is reduced and the mean grain size of grains increases with time. Our investigation shows that at elevated temperatures the activation energy for grain growth in this specifically tailored microstructure is very close to that of grain …

Development And Application Of Methods For Evaluation Of Hurricane Shelters, James P. Gregg Jan 2006

Development And Application Of Methods For Evaluation Of Hurricane Shelters, James P. Gregg

LSU Master's Theses

With the population of hurricane prone regions increasing, it has become more difficult to evacuate entire communities, increasing the need for hurricane shelters in coastal areas. Community officials generally use American Red Cross Standard ARC 4496 to evaluate the suitability of buildings for use as shelters.. ARC 4496 uses a least-risk process that evaluates many building and site characteristics. However, it does not address characteristics of the approaching storm and does not provide insight to the expected hazards and performance of the facility under different hurricane conditions. A new method for evaluating facilities for use as hurricane shelters is proposed. …

A New Method To Determine Radiative Properties Of Rough Solid Surfaces, Raghu Nandan Mutukulla

LSU Master's Theses

The radiative properties of the rough surfaces are important both from fundamental and practical standpoint. Thus, there is a need to determine the effect of roughness on radiative properties of materials accurately, as these properties effect the performance of electronic devices, communication devices, optical sensors, and furnaces, amongst others. The effects of roughness are assessed by measuring the reflection coefficients from the carbon rod surfaces and steel 1086 samples over the range of angles 25 to 75 in the visible range and near infrared region. Different levels of roughness are induced on the surfaces by utilizing different grid size sand-paper …

Design Of Linear Boolean Network Codes For Combination Networks, Shoupei Li Jan 2006

Design Of Linear Boolean Network Codes For Combination Networks, Shoupei Li

LSU Master's Theses

Network coding is a promising technique to improve the throughput of communication networks. In the thesis, we investigate linear Boolean network codes on a special class of multicast networks, called combination networks. Using companion matrices of primitive polynomials over finite fields, we design a class of symmetric linear Boolean network codes from Reed-Solomon codes for single-source combination networks. We also prove that, for some cases, the linear Boolean network codes are optimal in the sense of minimum network uses. In the thesis, we further consider two-source network coding problem for combination networks and other specific networks. We develop a method …

Feasibility Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As A Drilling Fluid For Deep Underbalanced Drilling Operations, Anamika Gupta Jan 2006

Feasibility Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As A Drilling Fluid For Deep Underbalanced Drilling Operations, Anamika Gupta

LSU Master's Theses

Feasibility of drilling with supercritical carbon dioxide to serve the needs of deep underbalanced drilling operations has been analyzed. A case study involving underbalanced drilling to access a depleted gas reservoir is used to illustrate the need for such a research. For this well, nitrogen was initially considered as the drilling fluid. Dry nitrogen, due to its low density, was unable to generate sufficient torque in the downhole motor. The mixture of nitrogen and water, stabilized as foam generated sufficient torque but made it difficult to maintain underbalanced conditions. This diminished the intended benefit of using nitrogen as the drilling …

A Comparative Analysis Of Hurricane Evacuation Traffic Conditions Using Static And Dynamic Traffic Assignments, Santosh Kumar Andem Jan 2006

A Comparative Analysis Of Hurricane Evacuation Traffic Conditions Using Static And Dynamic Traffic Assignments, Santosh Kumar Andem

LSU Master's Theses

This study compares link flows of evacuation traffic using Static Traffic Assignment (STA) with those obtained from Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) and observed traffic counts. The analysis is conducted on a sample of households from South Carolina who evacuated in the face of hurricane Floyd in 1999. The results indicate that traditional static models have the potential to significantly underestimate congestion levels in the network, and DTA models account for nonuniform demand and traffic dynamics in hurricane evacuation much more realistically. From observed traffic counts, traffic volumes vary considerably during an evacuation and the DTA flow estimates generally reproduced these …

Automatic Active Contour Modelling And Its Potential Application For Non-Destructive Testing, Srinath Vepathur Sitaraman

LSU Master's Theses

Active contouring techniques are very useful in medical imaging, digital mapping, non-destructive ultrasonic evaluation, etc. Therefore, we try to explore and investigate the advanced automatic active contouring methods, which can benefit the aforementioned applications. In this thesis work, we study the automatic active contour models adopted for the object characterization, whose extensions could include the potential defect analysis in the ultrasonic non-destructive testing. The active contouring scheme (also called a snake) or an energy minimizing spline, is an algorithm which is very sensitive to the manually marked initial points, and thereby requires an expertly operation. Therefore, we make new research …

Calibration Of Flexural Design Of Concrete Members Reinforced With Frp Bars, Sujata Nandkumar Kulkarni Jan 2006

Calibration Of Flexural Design Of Concrete Members Reinforced With Frp Bars, Sujata Nandkumar Kulkarni

Gas chromatography is an analytical technique for separating and analyzing individual components in a gas mixture. Applications of gas chromatographs (GCs) include chemical analysis, environmental maintenance, green house gases monitoring, and forensic analysis when used in conjunction with mass spectrometry. There has been a tremendous interest in miniaturization of gas chromatograph systems because of significantly reduced size, portability, fast response times, low power consumption and low cost. Isothermal analysis is a chromatographic analysis at one column temperature. In temperature programming, a linear increase of column temperature with time is used during the course of the analysis. Temperature programming facilitates separation …

Hydrate Dissociation During Drilling Through In-Situ Hydrate Formations, Erdem Catak Jan 2006

Hydrate Dissociation During Drilling Through In-Situ Hydrate Formations, Erdem Catak

LSU Master's Theses

Natural gas hydrates are thought to be the future hydrocarbon source of the energy hungry world. Tremendous amount of research has been done to investigate the feasibility of gas production from the hydrate formations. In this direction, three basic production methods, thermal stimulation, depressurization and thermodynamic inhibitor injection have been proposed to produce hydrocarbons off the hydrates. On the other hand, they present high potential risk of drilling hazards, such as severe gasification of drilling fluid, casing collapse due to increase in pressure after dissociation of hydrate zone, and instability of ocean floor, which may cause a platform failure. Scientists …

Experimental Analysis Of Mechanical Seal Design With Enhanced Thermal Performance, Ainsworth Gidden Jan 2006

Experimental Analysis Of Mechanical Seal Design With Enhanced Thermal Performance, Ainsworth Gidden

LSU Master's Theses

For industries that use pumps and mixers in their process operations, it is of paramount importance to control the leakage from these equipments. The leakage presents safety hazards and economic loss. It is widely believed that the majority of downtime associated with a pump or a mixer is the result of a mechanical seal failure. Therefore, it is important for these industries to have a mechanical seal that is a reliable performer and enables a longer operational life than what exist in the market at present. The aim of this research was to design and test a mating ring with …

A Thermodynamic Model For Wear In Sliding Contact, Susheel Brahmeshwarkar Jan 2006

A Thermodynamic Model For Wear In Sliding Contact, Susheel Brahmeshwarkar

Consideration of wear, an irreversible phenomenon, is a very important criterion in design. The knowledge of wear and its behavior enables one to make major considerations to conceptualize and design efficient machinery components with enhanced performance and reliability. The present work deals with the introduction of a novel approach of correlating wear with the thermodynamic properties of the system. The approach involves relating wear to thermodynamic entropy flow in the system using the laws of thermodynamics. This relation is verified experimentally and theoretically by considering a sliding contact in a disk-on-disk configuration for two sets of contacting materials namely Bronze …

Physical Model Study Of The Effects Of Wettability And Fractures On Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd) Performance, Wagirin Ruiz Paidin Jan 2006

Physical Model Study Of The Effects Of Wettability And Fractures On Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd) Performance, Wagirin Ruiz Paidin

LSU Master's Theses

The Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process was developed to take advantage of the natural segregation of injected gas from crude oil in the reservoir. It consists of placing a horizontal producer near the bottom of the reservoir and injecting gas using existing vertical wells. As the injected gas rises to the top to form a gas cap, oil and water drain down to the horizontal producer. Earlier experimental work using a physical model by Sharma had demonstrated the effectiveness of the GAGD process in improving the oil recovery when applied in water-wet porous media. The current research is an extension …

Mesoscale Simulation Of Grain Boundary Diffusion Creep In The Presence Of Grain Growth, Lucian Zigoneanu Jan 2006

Mesoscale Simulation Of Grain Boundary Diffusion Creep In The Presence Of Grain Growth, Lucian Zigoneanu

LSU Master's Theses

Grain-boundary (GB) diffusion creep (Coble creep) is the dominant deformation mechanism for the fine-grained materials under low stress and at elevated temperature. During creep deformation the grains become elongated in the tensile direction because of atoms diffusion along GBs from places in compression to those in tension. Consequently, the GB diffusion rate depends on the normal stress gradient along the boundaries. It is widely accepted that the GB migration generally plays two important roles during Coble creep: one leading to the decrease of the creep rate due to the increase of the grain size by GB migration mediated grain growth …

Performance Of A Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Motor Operating As A Synchronous Motor And A Brushless Dc Motor, Sophie Sekalala Jan 2006

Performance Of A Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Motor Operating As A Synchronous Motor And A Brushless Dc Motor, Sophie Sekalala

LSU Master's Theses

The performance of a three-phase permanent magnet (PM) motor operating as a synchronous motor and brushless DC (BLDC) motor is discussed. The PM motor, when operating as a synchronous machine, is supplied with constant frequency, meaning constant rotor speed operation. When operating as a BLDC motor, the supply frequency changes according to the actual rotor speed. It means the speed signal is fed back to the controller, which generates the appropriate frequency to supply the stator winding. This means the BLDC motor cannot operate without a position sensor. The objective of the project was to analyze and compare the performance …

Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds In Wood Soot Extracts From Henan, China, Robyn Joy Cabrido Alcanzare

LSU Master's Theses

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) are organic compounds composed of two or more fused benzene rings. These compounds are ubiquitous in the environment and some are found to be mutagenic and carcinogenic. High rates of esophageal cancer in the Henan Province of China had led to the suspicion that PAC from domestic coal and wood combustion are the main cause. Extraction of PAC from wood soot was done with a Soxhlet apparatus using dichloromethane as the solvent and concentration of the solution using a Kuderna Danish apparatus. Analysis of the different PAC was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with …

Mesoscale Predictions For The Dynamic Compaction Of Explosively-Coated Aluminum Micro-Particles, Michael Wayne Crochet Jan 2006

Mesoscale Predictions For The Dynamic Compaction Of Explosively-Coated Aluminum Micro-Particles, Michael Wayne Crochet

LSU Master's Theses

Conventional granular explosives are widely used in aerospace and defense-related industries. Powdered metals are often mixed with high explosives to enhance detonation. The effectiveness of these mixtures is limited by the slow burning of the metal relative to the explosive and their sensitivity to mechanical loading. Granular energetic composites, composed of an aluminum core coated with a layer of the high explosive RDX (C3H6N6O6), may be a high-performance alternative to conventional explosives because of a higher metal combustion rate and lower impact sensitivity. Though the technology required to manufacture granular energetic composites …

Demonstration And Performance Characterization Of The Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd) Process Using A Visual Method, Thaer N.N. Mahmoud Jan 2006

Demonstration And Performance Characterization Of The Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd) Process Using A Visual Method, Thaer N.N. Mahmoud

LSU Master's Theses

The Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process, currently being developed at LSU, is designed to take advantage of gravity to allow vertical segregation between the injected gas and reservoir crud oil due to their density differences. GAGD is recommended for use with CO2 gas. CO2 dissolves in oil and causes both swelling and viscosity reduction of oil. The GAGD process uses the existing vertical wells for CO2 gas injection, and a horizontal well near the bottom of the payzone for oil production. GAGD, as an EOR process, is not restricted to tertiary oil recovery only. In this research study, a …

Accelerating Micro-Scale Pcr (Polymerase Chain Reactor) For Modular Lab-On-A-Chip System, Pin-Chuan Chen

LSU Master's Theses

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a powerful technique used to exponentially amplify specific DNA sequences of interest through repetitive temperature cycling. The temperatures used in PCR are typically 90°C - 94°C for denaturation, 50°C - 70°C for renaturation, and 70°C - 75°C for extension. The double-stranded helix of nucleotides, carrying the genetic information, is separated during denaturation, reacts with chemical primers during renaturation, and becomes a complete, replica, double-stranded DNA helix structure during extension. The primary drawback of current commercial benchtop PCR machine is its cycle time due to its large thermal capacitance, and micro PCR is under developing …
