Release, Stability And Functionality Of Nanodelivered Hydrophobic (Lutein And Beta-Carotene) And Hydrophilic (Folic Acid) Antioxidants Using Zein Nanoparticles, Thanida Chuacharoen Jan 2015

Release, Stability And Functionality Of Nanodelivered Hydrophobic (Lutein And Beta-Carotene) And Hydrophilic (Folic Acid) Antioxidants Using Zein Nanoparticles, Thanida Chuacharoen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nanodelivery systems enable innovations that can benefit foods and human health on a large scale in the coming years. The instabilities of antioxidants during food processing and during digestion are drawbacks that can be successfully addressed by nanoentrapment. This research provided technical strategies to synthesize zein nanoparticles loaded with hydrophobic/hydrophilic antioxidants, and to study the release profiles and physical stability of nanocarriers and chemical stability of entrapped bioactives under on-shelf and GI conditions. The results supported the potential of zein nanoparticles stabilized by surfactants to improve chemical stability of entrapped lutein, and to slowly release lutein under PBS conditions. Same …

On An Effective Submodeling Procedure For Stresses Determined With Finite Element Analysis, Ajay Ashok Kardak Jan 2015

On An Effective Submodeling Procedure For Stresses Determined With Finite Element Analysis, Ajay Ashok Kardak

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Submodeling can enable stress analysts using finite elements to focus analysis on a subregion containing the stress concentration of interest, with consequent computational savings. Such benefits are only truly realized if the boundary conditions on the edges of the subregion that were originally contained within the global region are sufficiently accurate. These boundary conditions are drawn from initial global finite element analysis (FEA), and consequently themselves have errors that in turn lead to errors in the stresses sought. When these last boundary-condition errors are controlled, and the discretization errors incurred by the FEA of ensuing submodels are also controlled, submodeling …

Application Of Discrete Element Method And Computational Fluid Dynamics To Selected Dispersed Phase Flow Problems, Oladapo Olanrewaju Ayeni Jan 2015

Application Of Discrete Element Method And Computational Fluid Dynamics To Selected Dispersed Phase Flow Problems, Oladapo Olanrewaju Ayeni

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A parallel discrete particle modelling framework (PAR_DPM3D) is applied to study three fundamental multiphase flow problems: The sedimentation of a cluster of particles in a viscous ambient fluid, multiphase flow in a bench-scale fluidized bed and granular segregation and mixing dynamics in a rotating drum. Various phenomena including torus formation and particle cluster breakup are reproduced. We provide new insights into the volume fraction dependence of the dynamic characteristics of a settling particle cluster and find a similar dependence in the simulations as in the theoretical predictions of Nitsche and Batchelor 1. Similarities in the interaction between a system of …

An Efficient Fault Location Algorithm For Shipboard Power Systems, Pedram Jahanmard Jan 2015

An Efficient Fault Location Algorithm For Shipboard Power Systems, Pedram Jahanmard

LSU Master's Theses

The Shipboard Power System (SPS) supply energy to sophisticated systems for navigation, communication, weapons, and operation. Due to the ship’s critical operating condition, faults can be very detrimental. Faults in the SPS may happen because of failure of electrical components or by damages that happen during a battle. These faults may interrupt the paths for supplying energy to loads that are not damaged. To enhance survivability of naval ships, SPS requires an efficient fault location algorithm in order to locate and clear the fault as well as provide an alternative path to supply energy to the loads that are not …

Bioplastic Production In Cyanobacteria And Consensus Degenerate Pcr Probe Design, Courtney Edward Lane Jan 2015

Bioplastic Production In Cyanobacteria And Consensus Degenerate Pcr Probe Design, Courtney Edward Lane

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cyanobacteria show much promise in reducing biodegradable thermoplastic production costs; however, most currently characterized strains are ill-equipped to do so. The result of Objective I produced a high-throughput assay designed to discover existing cyanobacterial strains and rapidly characterize them as PHA-producers or potential PHA-producers. This assay will play an instrumental role in the attainment of a novel cyanobacteria environmental isolate capable of accumulating high levels of PHA naturally. Objective II produced an open source computer program which dramatically speeds the design of similar assays for any arbitrary genetic screening purpose. The program is not limited to this implementation alone. In …

Effect Of Appointment Schedules On The Operational Performance Of A University Medical Clinic, Arunn Pisharody Vijayan

LSU Master's Theses

Healthcare costs in the United States are one of the highest in the world. The healthcare expenditure alone accounted for 17.9% of the Gross Domestic Product of US in 2011. The National Healthcare Expenditure (NHE) is expected to increase at an annual rate of 6.6% from $ 2.6 Trillion in 2010 to $ 4.5 Trillion in 2019. The per capita expenditure for hospital outpatients and physicians has been the highest among other hospital expenses. This escalation in expenses created a need for productivity improvements in the healthcare industry to control costs. Some of the common problems encountered in outpatient clinics …

Ambit Of Multiphase Cfd In Modelling Transport Processes Related To Oil Spill Scenario And Microfluidics, Abhijit Rao Jan 2015

Ambit Of Multiphase Cfd In Modelling Transport Processes Related To Oil Spill Scenario And Microfluidics, Abhijit Rao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

During the ‘Deepwater Horizon’ accident in the deep sea in 2010, about 4.9 million barrels of oil was released into the Gulf of Mexico, making the spill one of the worst ocean spills in recent times. To mitigate the ill effects of the event on the environment, subsea injection of dispersants was carried out. Dispersant addition lowers the interfacial tension at oil/water interface and presence of local turbulence enhances the droplet disintegration process. The oil droplets contain a plethora of hydrocarbons which are soluble in water. In deep spill scenarios, droplets spend large amounts of time in water column; hence, …

Applications Of Cfd Simulations On Fractal Fluid Distributor, Gongqiang He Jan 2015

Applications Of Cfd Simulations On Fractal Fluid Distributor, Gongqiang He

LSU Master's Theses

Since its emergence in 1970s, process intensification has been attracting extensive research interests from both academic and industrial societies over the years. One good example of process intensification in chemical industry is the optimization of flow distributors. In many chemical processes, the uniformity of flow distributions plays the key role in determining the overall efficiency. Conventional distributors rely on high pressure drop to achieve acceptable flow distribution. With scaling symmetry from fractal, fractal distributors can handle fluid distribution much better than conventional distributors. With the rapid development of computation power and numerical simulation algorithms, Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides us …

Study Of Active Vibration Control Using The Method Of Receptances, Amit Maha Jan 2015

Study Of Active Vibration Control Using The Method Of Receptances, Amit Maha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using the Method of Receptance, it is possible in general to assign 2_x0002_ poles (i.e. n conjugate pairs) of an axially vibrating rod of variable cross section by sensing the state at _x0002_ points along the rod. Using the sensor data, closed loop feedback control gains can be calculated by solving a simple set of linear equations. The feedback gains can be applied to generate the required control force using an actuator. This partial pole assignment can be done without continuous or discrete analytical modeling. Therefore, the physical parameters such as the rigidity, the density, and the variable cross-sectional area …

Deepwater Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Scenarios Development And Their Associated Risk Assessment, Muhammad Zulqarnain Jan 2015

Deepwater Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Scenarios Development And Their Associated Risk Assessment, Muhammad Zulqarnain

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

World’s growing energy demand has pushed oil companies to explore and produce hydrocarbons in complex and technologically challenging deepwater environments. These difficult and complex operations involve the risk of major accidents as well, demonstrated by disasters such as the explosion and fire on the UK production platform Piper Alpha and capsizing of the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Accidents cause death, suffering, pollution of the environment, disruption of business and bad reputation to oil industry. A quantitative risk analysis technique has been used in this study to identify and categorize risk associated with different life phases …

The aim of this work was to synthesize non-toxic, biodegradable polyesters of aconitic acid, cinnamic acid and glycerol from by-products of the sugarcane industry as scaffolds for skin and bone tissue engineering. Utilizing the by-products, molasses and sugarcane bagasse, not only add value to the cane industry, but also paves path for synthesizing novel bio-based materials from the isolated specialty chemicals. Molasses contain an economically recoverable quantity of aconitic acid and its extraction was studied in detail as a part of this work. The yields of recovered aconitic acid varied from 25–69% depending on the extraction conditions. Under all the …

Engineering Behavior And Characterization Of Biomass Ashes Using Geotechnical Measurement Techniques, Francisco Javier Grau Sacoto Jan 2014

Engineering Behavior And Characterization Of Biomass Ashes Using Geotechnical Measurement Techniques, Francisco Javier Grau Sacoto

LSU Master's Theses

Biomass, the organic material derived from plants or animals in a biological process, has rapidly become a topic of worldwide interest. The need to find new types of renewable energy sources has led to the use of natural materials as an economic, sustainable and environmental alternative. Biomass can be used to produce biofuel after a conversion process. The combustion of biomass matter –which is mainly produced in industrial plants- becomes biomass ash, which contains macronutrients and micronutrients. Currently, the recycling potential is wasted and most of the biomass ash is dumped without control or just disposed in landfills. The main …

During And After Event Analysis Of Cell Phone Talking And Texting-A Driving Simulator Study, Raju Thapa

LSU Master's Theses

A number of studies have been done in the field of driver distraction, specifically on the use of cell phone for either conversation or texting while driving. However, till now, researchers have focused on the driving performance of drivers when they were actually engaged in the task, i.e. during the texting or phone conversation event. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the post event effect of cell phone usage in order to verify whether the distracting effect lingers on after the actual event had ceased. The research utilizes a driving simulator study of thirty-six participants to test …

Tomographic Imaging Of Combustion Zones Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (Tdlas), Avishek Guha Jan 2014

Tomographic Imaging Of Combustion Zones Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (Tdlas), Avishek Guha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work concentrates on enabling the usage of a specific variant of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (abbr. TDLAS) for tomogaphically reconstructing spatially varying temperature and concentrations of gases with as few reconstruction artifacts as possible. The specific variant of TDLAS used here is known as wavelength modulation with second harmonic detection (abbr. WMS-2f) which uses the wavelength dependent absorbance information of two different spectroscopic transitions to determine temperature and concentration values. Traditionally, WMS-2f has generally been applied to domains where temperature although unknown, was spatially largely invariant while concentration was constant and known to a reasonable approximation (_x0006_+/- 10% …

Meso-Scale Analysis Of Deformation Induced Heating In Granular Metalized Explosives By Piston Supported Waves, Sunada Srinath Nagamani Chakravarthy Jan 2014

Meso-Scale Analysis Of Deformation Induced Heating In Granular Metalized Explosives By Piston Supported Waves, Sunada Srinath Nagamani Chakravarthy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Shock sensitivity of heterogeneous explosive composites is dependent on the formation of hot-spots which are small regions of elevated temperatures within the material. Changes in the initial meso-structure (i.e. packing density, composition, particle size and shapes) of the explosives can significantly alter the hot-spot fields in the material and thereby affect its shock sensitivity. In this study, an explicit, 2D, Lagrangian finite and discrete element technique is used to numerically simulate the deformation induced heating of granular mixtures of explosive (HMX), and metal (Al) particles due to piston supported uniaxial deformation waves (400 ≤ Up ≤ 800 m/s). A number …

Analysis And Modeling Of Manual Traffic Control For Signalized Intersections, Scott Alexander Skip Parr Jan 2014

Analysis And Modeling Of Manual Traffic Control For Signalized Intersections, Scott Alexander Skip Parr

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Manual traffic control is a common intersection control strategy in which trained personnel, typically police law enforcement officers, allocate intersection right-of-way to approaching vehicles. Manual intersection control is a key part of managing traffic during emergencies and planned special events. It is widely assumed that the flow of traffic through intersections can be greatly improved by the direction given from police officers who can observe and respond to change conditions by allocating green time to the approaches that require it the most. Despite the long history of manual traffic control throughout the world and its assumed effectiveness, there have been …

Sinking Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures Due To Evaporative And/Or Dissolution Weathering On The Surface And Submerged In Water, Christopher Clayton Stevens Jan 2014

Sinking Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures Due To Evaporative And/Or Dissolution Weathering On The Surface And Submerged In Water, Christopher Clayton Stevens

LSU Master's Theses

The appearance of on-bottom oil following surface and deep water spills has been well documented. A very likely, yet sparingly studied, cause of this phenomenon is the evaporation and/or dissolution of the light constituents of the mixture, leaving a heavy residual fraction that may sink. A binary mixture of a light, volatile/soluble and a heavy, nonvolatile/insoluble component was used in numerous laboratory experiments, with binary and multi-component mixtures, to confirm this event is possible. A binary-component model was developed based on the law of conservation of mass for “oil” spilled on the surface to predict sinking time requirements based on …

Method For Synchrotron X-Ray Computed Tomographic Imaging Of Biofilms In Porous Media, Corey Matthew Klibert Jan 2014

Method For Synchrotron X-Ray Computed Tomographic Imaging Of Biofilms In Porous Media, Corey Matthew Klibert

LSU Master's Theses

Modeling of biofilms in porous media at pore scale resolution has been hindered by the lack of available experimental techniques to non-destructively image biofilm structure at these resolutions. Researchers have relied upon simulation rather than experimentation to produce pore-scale biofilm models, using simplifying assumptions governing microbial growth such as Monod kinetics and random biofilm seeding locations to generate biofilms in simulated environments. This study investigated the use of absorption-edge synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography (SXCMT) in combination with a contrast agent, Lugol’s iodine solution (10% KI/5% I2), to nondestructively obtain three-dimensional images of biofilms at pore-scale resolution. The study examined and …

Exploring Invariant Hybrid Color Image Features For Face Recognition Under Illumination Variation, Jayesh Mohan Jan 2014

Exploring Invariant Hybrid Color Image Features For Face Recognition Under Illumination Variation, Jayesh Mohan

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis, a novel analysis framework is presented in order to automate testing response of an image-feature descriptor algorithm for face recognition under different illumination conditions and white balance calibration over intra- and inter-color space. The experimental results on the OPFD database show that our analysis framework finds the least sensitive channel of a color space for recognizing a face under unknown illumination, unknown white balance, and the both unknown illumination and white balance conditions. The results also show the combination of channels in a color space which are best suited face recognition.

Integrating Recycled Glass Cullet In Asphalt Roof Shingles To Mitigate Heat Island Effect, Micah Kiletico Jan 2014

Integrating Recycled Glass Cullet In Asphalt Roof Shingles To Mitigate Heat Island Effect, Micah Kiletico

As an approach to mitigate the harmful effects of Urban Heat Island (UHI), the use of glass cullet in the production of asphalt roof shingles has the potential to be employed as a cool roof strategy. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the use of recycled glass increases solar reflectance index (SRI) without affecting the performance of asphalt roof shingles. In order to evaluate the feasibility of recycled glass for alternative uses, the engineering properties of glass cullet were investigated and compared to conventional aggregates used in the production of asphalt roof shingles. Laboratory samples …

Experimental Assessment Of Cement Integrity Under Thermal Cycle Loading Conditions In Geopressured Geothermal Reservoirs, Kolawole Saheed Bello Jan 2014

Experimental Assessment Of Cement Integrity Under Thermal Cycle Loading Conditions In Geopressured Geothermal Reservoirs, Kolawole Saheed Bello

LSU Master's Theses

The number of well integrity issues increase as wells are exposed to severe downhole conditions and have longer lifetimes. Techniques for heat extraction from geopressured geothermal reservoirs involve production of hot water and injection of cold water which expose downhole materials to harsh cyclic temperature variations. Heating and cooling make the cement expand and contract as a result of thermal expansion. This volumetric change can influence cement sheaths causing them to fail. Failure of annular cement sheaths can introduce well integrity issues and subsequently lead to sustained casing pressure. This study measures the effect of cyclic thermal loading of cement …
