Keynote Talk – Novel Convective Heat Transfer Enhancement In Channels And Tubes Filled With Nanofluid-Saturated Metal Foams, Fumika Sakai, Wenhao Li, Akira Nakayama
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
A local thermal non-equilibrium theory was exploited to investigate heat transfer in nanofluid saturated porous media, in view of possible heat transfer applications of metal foams filled with nanofluids as high performance heat exchangers. The resulting set of the macroscopic equations based on the modified Buongiorno model proposed by Yan et al. for convective heat transfer in nanofluids were used to obtain the analytical solutions for laminar fully developed forced convection in channels and tubes filled with nanofluid saturated metal foams. The analytical and numerical solutions were obtained for laminar fully developed forced convection in channels and tubes filled with …

Effect Of Variable Porosity On Composite Heat Transfer In A Boundary Layer Flow, Puttabasavsetty Nagaraju
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
The effects of variable porosity and variable thermal conductivity of the medium and also the emission, absorption and scattering of radiation are studied in this paper. The comparative study has been made for three different situations, namely a) variable porosity b) constant porosity and c) absence of porous medium. In carrying out the solution, the momentum and energy equations are coupled and they are solved simultaneously by Runge-Kutta Gill method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The results of the analyses show that, in the cases of variable porosity and absence of porous medium the velocity profiles possess very small curvature …

5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
Due to the migration of elements they induce imbibition-drying cycles are known to play a major role in the colloid-facilitated transport in many industrials process, for instance for pollutants migration in soils or pores clogging in building materials. We study the drying of a colloidal suspension in a porous media. The critical physical phenomenon at work here is the displacement and redistribution of colloidal particles induced by evaporation of the liquid phase from the porous medium. This can be clearly seen by filling a bead packing with coffee. Indeed after full drying the sample has shaded tones with darker regions …

Phase Change With Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium In A Two-Phase Mixture Model, Franz Lindner, Michael Pfitzner, Christian Mundt
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
CFD solutions of multi-phase, single-component flow through a vertical channel, filled with a porous medium, heated from one side, are shown. Steady-state solutions are presented for Darcian flow through capillary porous media. Local thermal non- equilibrium is used with a two-phase mixture. The effects of variation of Peclet-number and dimensionless heat input are shown. The displacement effect of the super-heated vapor reduces the free cross-section of flow of the liquid fluid and accelerates the liquid fluid flowing past the evaporation front. The temperatures, liquid saturations, liquid and vapor heat transfer coefficients are shown for cases with super-heated vapor.

Effects Of Non-Darcy Flow And Pore Proximity On Gas Condensate Production From Nanopore Unconventional Resources, Alireza Sanaei, Ahmad Jamili, Jeffrey Callard
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
Transport properties and mechanisms as well as phase behavior under nanoscale confinement exhibit significant deviations from their bulk behavior. Phase behavior due to the significant effect of molecule-wall interactions as well as molecule-molecule interactions changes in nanopores. Additionally, in nanopores, when the mean free path of molecules is in the order of the pore radius, non-Darcy flow occurs. This phenomenon causes an increase in effective permeability of the flowing fluid. In this study, we focus on analyzing and determining the effect of phase behavior and transport properties change due to pore proximity on production from a shale gas condensate reservoir. …
Performance Comparison Of The Finite-Difference, Practical-Finite-Analytic, Differential-Quadrature, And Differential-Cubature Methods For Solving Porous Media Immiscible Fluids Transport, Faruk Civan
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
Reviews and comparisons of the finite-difference, differential-quadrature, differential-cubature, finite-analytic, and practical-finite-analytic methods are presented. Numerical solution of immiscible fluids transport in porous media are illustrated. The cubature and practical finite-analytic methods are shown to have apparent advantages over the other methods because the numerical solution schemes are derived directly from the specific problems of interest.

Chemicals that are dissolved in groundwater flow along with the slow-moving water as it makes its way through the complex pores of the aquifer; during this process they are dispersed in different directions. The rate of dispersion depends on the porous structure and the fluid speed. Many groundwater aquifers have a natural layered structure; here this is used to advantage by discretizing them into "almost horizontal" layers, where each may have different matrix properties such as thickness, permeability, dispersivity, porosity, etc. The mean dynamic pressure (or mean hydraulic head) may be assumed constant vertically at each horizontal point if it …

Thermal Barrier Coatings IV
A thermodynamic database has been developed for calculating thermochemical interaction of thermal barrier coatings, namely 7YSZ (yttria partially stabilized zirconia), with CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS) deposits. CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-Y2O3-ZrO2 is thus the core system for understanding and modeling of processes occurring between CMAS and TBC. A good thermodynamic description of all phases in the system is essential in modeling related to materials design and process optimization. An efficient technique used to obtain a self-consistent thermodynamic database is called the CALPHAD method [1], where the Gibbs energy of each phase is described with a mathematical model. The Gibbs energy of the total system is then …

Thermal Barrier Coatings IV
A lifing model has been developed based on lab testing to describe the time-temperature-dependence of TBC spallation. An extensive parameter study, using serial parts and coating processes, was done to investigate the affect of manufacturing scatter on TBC life as well as on thermal loading. The impacts of several parameters have been quantified. The transfer to part level has to consider the overall boundary conditions, i.e. increased TBC thickness will reduce on one hand the bondcoat temperature and the risk of spallation, but on the other hand, the increased thickness will increase the stresses within the TBC and the risk …

Effect Of Temperature Dependent Viscosity On Natural Convective Boundary Layer Flow Over A Horizontal Plate Embedded In A Nanofluid Saturated Porous Medium, Shoba Bagai, Chandrashekhar Nishad
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
The effect of temperature dependent viscosity on natural convective boundary-layer flow of a nano-fluid over an isothermal horizontal plate is investigated numerically. The viscosity of the fluid is assumed to have an exponentially decaying dependence on temperature ν=ν0e−b(T−T∞). A similarity analysis is presented for field equations embodying conservation of total mass, momentum, thermal energy and nano-particles. The analysis shows that velocity, temperature and nano-particle volume fraction profiles in the respective boundary layers depend on the viscosity parameter γ besides the pertinent parameters such as buoyancy ratio Nr, Brownian motion Nb, thermophoresis Nt and Lewis number Le. From physical considerations one …

5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
Density driven convective mass transfer process in porous media is one of the most universal phenomena in underground aquifer. In this study, an original model defining Nu (or Sh) number for miscible mass transfer system was derived, based on basic concept of integrated entransy dissipation rate. Numerical simulation results of density driven convective mass transfer process in a closed Hele-Shaw cell and porous media are analyzed. In the process of dilute brine-water mass transfer system in Hele-Shaw cell, three different stages were observed. Meanwhile, time dependent entransy variation and Nu number using our definition also show three different steps in …

Concentration Of Bioethanol And Dehydration Of Organic Solvents By Porous Membranes, Tadashi Uragami
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
In order to obtain higher membrane performance in the concentration of bioethanol and dehydration of organic solvents, porous poly[1-(trimethylsilyl)-1-propyne] (PTMSP) and porous chitosan membranes, respectively are applied to a temperature-difference controlled evapomeation (TDEV) method in which a temperature difference between the feed solution and the membrane surroundings is established. Pressure treated porous PTMS membranes showed a high ethanol concentration performance with a high permeation rate and porous chitosan membranes also showed a high dehydration performance in TDEV. Membrane performances through these porous membranes in TDEV are discussed from the viewpoints of physical structure of membranes and permeants.

Experimental Evaluation Of Wellbore Cement- Formation Shear Bond Strength In Presence Of Drilling Fluid Contamination, Mileva Radonjic, Arome Oyibo
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the impact of physical and chemical mud contaminations on cement-formation shear bond strength for sandstone and shale formations. Physical contamination occurs when drilling fluids (mud) dehydrates on the surface of the formation, while chemical contamination on the other hand occurs when the drilling fluid (still in the liquid state) is mixed with cement slurry and reacts chemically with the cement during a cementing job. We investigated the impact of the contamination on the shear bond strength and the changes in the mineralogy of the cement at the cement-formation interface to quantify …

A Model For Magnetic Drug Targeting In A Permeable Microvessel With Spherical Porous Carrier Particles, Precious Sibanda, Sachin Shaw
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
We present a mathematical model for targeting a drug at malignant tissue cells in a permeable microvessel. The drug molecules are transported in carrier particles which are assumed to be porous spheres. This mode of drug delivery is non-invasive and has less toxic effects on healthy cells and tissues. The microvessel tube (see Figure 1) is subdivided into three regions, the outer endothelial glycocalyx layer where the blood has a Newtonian character, and a core and plug regions where the blood flow is described using a non-Newtonian Casson fluid model which is suitable for microvessels of radius 5mμ. Targeting is …

Multilayer Minichannel Heat Sinks: The Effect Of Porosity Scaling On Pressure Drop, Arun K. Karunanithi,, Fatemeh Hassanipour
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
Previous studies have shown that stacked multi-layer mini-channels heat sinks with square or circular channels have advantages over traditional single layered channels in terms of both pressure drop and thermal resistance. In this work, porous media is used in the multi-layered stacked mini-channels instead of square or rectangular channels and the effect of the same on pressure drop and thermal perfor- mance is studied. Porosity scaling is done between the lay- ers of porous media and is compared with unscaled stacked multilayer channel. Porosity scaling allows the porosity to vary from one layer to the next layer and could result …

Numerical Simulation Of Pressure Pulse Decay Experiment On Crushed Low Permeability Rocks Considering Klinkenberg Effect And Gas Absorption/Desorption, Bo Zhou, Rui-Na Xu, Pei-Xue Jiang
5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry
Pressure pulse decay method is widely used for permeability tests for low permeability rock plug samples. This method can be used for crushed grain samples by removing the downstream chamber in standard pulse decay tests. Processes in pulse decay tests for low permeability crushed shale are investigated using numerical simulation. Both the Klinkenberg slip effect for gas flows in low permeability rock and the gas absorption/desorption in the porous matrix are considered. The complete mathematical model is set up to include the two effects. Deviation of the numerical pulse decay curve from the analytical one with an assumption that the …
