Developing Fixed-Bias Langmuir Probes For Multi-Point Constellation Deployments, Henry Carter Valentine
Developing Fixed-Bias Langmuir Probes For Multi-Point Constellation Deployments, Henry Carter Valentine
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Since their initial development in the early 20th century, electrostatic Langmuir probes have proved invaluable in terrestrial and interplanetary ionospheric sounding applications. When deployed aboard rocket and satellite platforms, these probes yield high-cadence, in-situ measurements of key plasma parameters such as electron density, ion density, and electron temperature. Furthermore, the efficacy of Langmuir probes in characterizing the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of ionospheric plasmas can be augmented by the technique of multi-payload deployments. In this work, we discuss the design, development, and analysis of fixed-bias Langmuir probes constructed for two multi-point science campaigns: the Mars-bound, dual-satellite Escape and Plasma Acceleration …

Robust Spacecraft Autonomy For Deep Space Exploration In Special Euclidean Group Se(3), Matthew Wittal
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Over the past half-century, humanity has gained extensive experience conducting manned spaceflight near Earth. Arguably, "near Earth" could even include the Moon — the most distant destination humans have reached. However, "near" in this work primarily refers low Earth orbit (LEO). One could argue that we have not truly left Earth since the Apollo, as spacecraft in some LEOs remain subject to atmospheric drag thus emphasizing their continued connection to Earth's immediate environment. Reflecting on this, it becomes clear that humanity has largely remained bound to Earth’s immediate vicinity since the Apollo missions reached the Moon. However, that is set …

Many geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, involve unsaturated soils or soils in thevadose zone. Undrained loading happens when the increase in driving forces occurs quicker thanthe ability of the soil to dissipate its pore-water pressure (PWP). During undrained loading forcompacted clay embankments, in which the material is typically unsaturated, it has beenestablished that the increase in shear strength caused by an increase in confining pressure is largerthan the reduction in shear strength due to a decrease in matric suction. This concept is not wellestablished in engineering practice because the conventional understanding is that the strength ofunsaturated soils is larger than …

Empowering Precision Forecasting: Self-Supervised Lstm For Hourly Pressure And Temperature Prediction, Anand Shankar, Deepak K. Singh, Mantosh Kumar, Pankaj Kumar, Pradhan Parth Sarthi
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The most important parts of any flight are landing and takeoff, and an aircraft's takeoff configuration must balance the regulated takeoff weight, runway length, and weather conditions to ensure a safe departure and arrival. In addition to runway length, wind, temperature, pressure, and visibility determine the total allowed takeoff weight and the economic viability of any trip. Thus, any meteorological office involved in flight planning and operation at any airport must accurately assess these factors, known as takeoff data. This research paper suggests multivariate self-supervised LSTM-based models to accurately predict the temperature and pressure (MSLP) of the takeoff data. The …

Integrated Qfd-Triz Optimization Method For Satellite Solar Array Design In Cost-Sensitive Environment, Hongyi Zhang, Liang Su
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
With the rapid evolution of commercial space markets in the new space era, satellite design philosophy is transitioning from "performance supremacy" toward "cost-effectiveness priority." This research concentrates on solar arrays, a critical component representing 15%-20% of satellite costs, addressing limitations in traditional design methodologies that inadequately coordinate user requirements and lack systematic frameworks for cost-performance collaborative optimization. We propose a solar array optimization methodology predicated on the integration of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ). This methodology incorporates cost dimensions through an extended QFD matrix, employs TRIZ to resolve technical contradictions, and develops a …
