The primary goal of this research is to show how a fully developed driveway database will improve access management practices resulting in a reduction in crashes, injuries, and fatalities on our roadways. The results of this thesis highlight a close relationship between driveway characteristics and the incidence of crashes. Thus, it is critical to be proactive in enforcing access management strategies and policies that are designed to enhance driveway safety without compromising the economic vitality of land use along roads. The analysis identified several significant independent variables that influence crash rates either positively or negatively. The data driven approach to …
Eye Tracking Consumer Purchase Behavior Within Physical And Virtual Environments, David Andrew Stone
Eye Tracking Consumer Purchase Behavior Within Physical And Virtual Environments, David Andrew Stone
All Theses
Understanding how consumers observe and make purchase decisions within a retail context is now both accessible and efficient through the process of eye tracking. Eye tracking package design aesthetics helps us understand and predict what consumers are looking at, and how likely a package might be selected. Typically, this research is conducted in an immersive retail setting where consumers can shop as they would in a normal store-shopping context. A store is stocked with products where a participant in the study shops throughout while wearing an eye tracker to gather data on what their attention fixates on within a given …
Endothelialization Using Protein Substrates And Hydrogels For Aortic Valve Applications, Elizabeth A. Fontaine
Endothelialization Using Protein Substrates And Hydrogels For Aortic Valve Applications, Elizabeth A. Fontaine
All Theses
Aortic valve disease is currently the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity in the United States.1 In 2003, approximately 290,000 patients required heart valve replacement and that number is estimated to continue to rise as the average age of the population continues to increase.2 However, the current valve replacement options have multiple limitations. Tissue engineering hopes to address these shortcomings by providing a viable valve that more closely mimics the native valve, structurally and functionally.3 An ideal valve replacement should contain endothelial and interstitial cells, with the ability to remodel the extra-cellular matrix. While tissue-engineered heart valves are not uncommon in …

Cloud-Based Strategies For Robust Connectivity And Efficient Transmission In Vehicular Networks, Ke Xu
All Dissertations
Leveraging multiple wireless technologies and radio access networks, vehicles on the move have the potential to get ubiquitous broadband Internet connectivity. Many studies have put lots of efforts on vehicle-to-vehicle networks for relaying strategies, popular content distribution, etc. However, in dominant infrastructure-based vehicular networks, supporting continuous and fast data transfer for today's prevalent services, e.g. video streaming, for vehicles anytime and anywhere is still a difficult research problem. By looking into such problem, impacts such as intermittent connectivity, dynamic network topology, fluctuating signal coverage, and inefficient transmissions, all result from two root causes in vehicular network- mobility and limited infrastructure …
Investigating Polymer Based Scaffolds For Urinary Bladder Tissue Engineering, Srikanth Sivaraman
Investigating Polymer Based Scaffolds For Urinary Bladder Tissue Engineering, Srikanth Sivaraman
All Dissertations
Current surgical treatments for urinary bladder disorders rely on the use of autologous intestinal segments and xenografts such as small intestinal submucosa, which suffer from various complications including mechanical mismatch and graft shrinkage. Despite early promises of bladder tissue engineering, a recent report of unsuccessful clinical trials suggests that the technology needs further improvement and evaluation through animal models of bladder dysfunction. Therefore, the objective of this doctoral dissertation was to characterize a viable bladder tissue scaffold (patch) which mimics the mechanical properties of the bladder, maintains the phenotype of the BSMC seeded in it and finally, tested in vivo …

Decision Environments To Encourage More Sustainable Infrastructure Outcomes, Earl Shealy
Decision Environments To Encourage More Sustainable Infrastructure Outcomes, Earl Shealy
All Dissertations
Physical infrastructure (i.e. roads, pipelines, airports, dams, landfills, and water treatment systems) contributes directly to sustainability outcomes such as energy and water use and climate changing emissions. The infrastructure built today will likely impact future generations for many years. Planning, design and development decisions about infrastructure are critical to the future performance of these systems. Such decisions about infrastructure are complex with multiple variables, alternative options, and design stages. To manage decisions that exceed cognitive capacity to consider all options, decision makers often create mental shortcuts (heuristics), and accompanied errors (biases). The potential cognitive biases when dealing with complex decisions …

Linear Programming Methods For Identifying Solvable Cases Of The Quadratic Assignment Problem, Lucas Waddell
Linear Programming Methods For Identifying Solvable Cases Of The Quadratic Assignment Problem, Lucas Waddell
All Dissertations
This research effort is concerned with identifying and characterizing families of polynomially solvable instances of the celebrated NP-hard quadratic assignment problem (qap). The approach is novel in that it uses polyhedral methods based on an equivalent mixed 0-1 linear reformulation of the problem. The continuous relaxation of this mixed 0-1 form yields a feasible region having extreme points that are both binary and fractional. The solvable instances of concern essentially possess objective function structures that ensure a binary extreme point must be optimal, so that the linear program solves the qap. The ultimate contribution of this work is the unification …
Understanding The Fusion And Maturation Of Tissue Engineered Linear Blood Vessels Using Magnetic Cellular Spheroids, Timothy R. Olsen
Understanding The Fusion And Maturation Of Tissue Engineered Linear Blood Vessels Using Magnetic Cellular Spheroids, Timothy R. Olsen
All Dissertations
Cellular spheroids are attractive for tissue fabrication due to having precise control over cell and extracellular matrix (ECM) composition, the ability for upscaled production and repeatability, their three-dimensional nature and the fact that spheroids will produce their own ECM over time. A critical process in the fabrication of complex tissue structures with cellular spheroids is related to their fusion and maturation. Tissue fusion is a self-assembly process in which two or more distinct cell populations, or tissues, make contact and coalesce to form a single cohesive structure. Maturation of tissue engineered constructs involves developing the mechanical properties and ECM compositions …

This contribution describes a new sample loading method for Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS), which is used in nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation efforts worldwide and is known as the “gold standard” in isotopic ratio measurements of plutonium. TIMS analysis is used to determine grades of nuclear material and the extent of enrichment at production sites. The current sample loading method for TIMS analysis is known as “bead-loading”. While it provides the lowest detection limit of any known method for plutonium analysis, bead-loading is a difficult, time consuming, and expensive method that results in up to 20% sample loss. The major …

Micro‐Textured Boron Nitride Nanoplatelet Modified Polyethylene Films, Ozgun Ozdemir, Amod A. Ogale
Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium
Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) micro‐textured films filled with boron nitride nanoplatelets (BNN) were produced by continuous melt extrusion. Nanoparticles displayed a significant extent of dispersion inside the matrix. The addition of BNN led to more than 10‐fold increase of the in‐plane thermal conductivity (TC) of the nanocomposite (7.7 W/m.K vs 0.3 W/m.K for pure LLDPE), and 1.3‐fold increase of through thickness TC. To increase the surface area available for convective heat transfer, micro‐textured films (T‐BNN) were produced from a micro‐patterned die. Nanoplatelets were aligned parallel to the film machine direction. Film stiffness and tensile strength are comparable to the …

Development Of Anti-Fouling, Anti-Microbial Membranes By Chemical Patterning, Steven Weinman, Na Li, Viatcheslav Freger, Moshe Herzberg, Scott Husson
Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium
Over 1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Membranes are a tool that can help provide clean water to these people. However, treatment of impaired waters for beneficial use exposes the membranes to feed waters containing biological and abiotic species, which leads to fouling and loss of membrane productivity over time. Since reduction in flux due to fouling is one of the largest costs associated with membrane processes in water treatment, new coatings that limit fouling would have significant economic and societal impacts. Developing these advanced coatings is the focus of our work.

Solutions to many future challenges - including water purification, drug delivery, and energy storage - will require innovative new materials. Dendrimers are a class of materials with wide-ranging applications whose behavior is not fully understood. In many potential applications, dendrimers interact with small molecules. Our work focuses on describing the fundamental mechanisms governing the interactions between dendrimers and hydrocarbons using molecular modeling and computer simulations. A common view of dendrimer host-guest interactions is that the guest molecules are encapsulated in protected interior voids within the dendrimer structure. Our results present an alternative picture and show that the association of a …
