Drip Irrigation System Cost Sharing By Irrigation Districts For Water Conservation, Charles M. Burt Jan 2011

Drip Irrigation System Cost Sharing By Irrigation Districts For Water Conservation, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Government and irrigation district cost sharing programs have often included financial support for the installation of drip/micro irrigation systems. These programs seek advantages that might include improved crop yield, less applied water, and a reduction in subsurface drainage water and surface tailwater. They may also seek to reduce water consumption. The actual results have been shown to vary by district, hydrology, and crop.

It is true that drip systems in California, on average, have good Distribution Uniformities (DU) of irrigation water – meaning that there are only minor differences between the depths of water received by various plants throughout a …

Mapping Galileo's Trajectory, Mark Woods Jan 2011

Mapping Galileo's Trajectory, Mark Woods

Aerospace Engineering

The NASA Galileo mission was mapped out using a patched conics approximation.  Galileo launched from Earth, underwent a gravity assist from Venus back to Earth for another gravity assist.  Galileo then came back to Earth for one more gravity assist to propel it to Jupiter.  A simulation ignoring all perturbations (i.e. third body effects, zonal (harmonics, solar wind, drag) was carried out.  The simulation was able to make it to the final Earth flyby before diverging from the actual trajectory.  The simulated and actual flyby dates all differed by less than 5 hours, and the simulated and actual flyby altitudes …

Analysis Of Surface Augmentation Of Airfoil Sections Via Flow Visualization Techniques, John Louis Vento

Aerospace Engineering

This report details an experiment done to verify the effectiveness of two passive flow control systems on two-dimensional airfoil sections. The flow control was tested on two types of airfoils: a symmetric NACA 0011, intended to represent an airplane in cruise, and a NACA16611, intended to represent an aircraft with flaps extended.  Two types of passive systems were employed, a dimple surface augmentation, similar to a golf ball, and a grit system located at 20% chord. Airfoils without either augmentation were tested as a control case. Using a water tunnel and dye to perform flow visualization, the effects of each …

Flight Testing In A Simulation Based Environment, David W. Babka Jan 2011

Flight Testing In A Simulation Based Environment, David W. Babka

Aerospace Engineering

Over the past two decades performance flight testing of full scale aircraft has transferred some of the testing workload to simulation based systems.  Flight testing full scale aircraft in the real world environment has always been expensive, especially now with the rise in aviation fuel costs. Additionally, new emerging technologies require extensive testing and doing so in the full scale environment is cost prohibitive.  A cheaper alternative is to test systems in a simulation based environment.  Not only can aircraft be simulated via a computer, but all the aircrafts systems can be modeled in the simulation.  Furthermore, most of the …

The Effects Of Anti-Price Gouging Legislation On Supply Chain Dynamics, Jason Edward Maynard Jan 2011

The Effects Of Anti-Price Gouging Legislation On Supply Chain Dynamics, Jason Edward Maynard

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to model the effects of anti-price gouging (APG) legislation on the costs to businesses during the recovery period of a disaster. A system dynamics model of a business’s replenishment procedures is used to simulate the effects of APG legislation on business performance. Economists have published expansive research on the effects of price ceilings on supply and demand, but there is little research evidence on the operational consequences of price ceiling legislation on business costs. APG legislation increases consumer’s forward buying and shortage gaming after a disaster by removing price incentives to be frugal. Forward …

2d Motion Detection Bounded Hand 3d Trajectory Tracking And Gesture Recognition Under Complex Background, Shuangqing Wu, Yin Zhang, Sanyuan Zhang, Xiuzi Ye, Yiyu Cai, Jianmin Zheng, Soumita Ghosh, Wenyu Chen, Jane Zhang Dec 2010

2d Motion Detection Bounded Hand 3d Trajectory Tracking And Gesture Recognition Under Complex Background, Shuangqing Wu, Yin Zhang, Sanyuan Zhang, Xiuzi Ye, Yiyu Cai, Jianmin Zheng, Soumita Ghosh, Wenyu Chen, Jane Zhang

Electrical Engineering

In this paper, a 2D motion detection bounded hand 3D trajectory tracking and gesture recognition system is proposed for virtual reality interactions. First, the Bayes decision rule for classification of background and foreground is utilized to automatically locate the hand that bounded within a rectangle, and then the trajectory of the hand in 3D space is tracked by mean shift particle filter and stereo imaging. The skin color feature is exploited for image matting that effectively segment the hand contour in video sequence automatically. Finally the hand gesture is recognized by the connected component analysis and line approximation.

Real-Time 3d Markerless Multiple Hand Detection And Tracking For Human Computer Interaction Applications, Soumita Ghosh, Jianmin Zheng, Wenyu Chen, Jane Zhang, Yiyu Cai Dec 2010

Real-Time 3d Markerless Multiple Hand Detection And Tracking For Human Computer Interaction Applications, Soumita Ghosh, Jianmin Zheng, Wenyu Chen, Jane Zhang, Yiyu Cai

Electrical Engineering

In this paper we present a purely vision based implementation of markerless hand detection and tracking system which effectively detects and tracks the hand positions irrespective of hand orientation. A shape based detection algorithm using a new line approximation technique followed by an adaptive minimum distance classifier based tracking technique is implemented. The technique is very generic and can be practically used in all types of immersive and semi-immersive environments like simulations, three-dimensional (3D) games, visually assisted medical surgery and other humancomputer interactive applications.

Efforts to learn more about the oceans that surround us have increased dramatically as the technological ability to do so grows. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are one such technological advance. They allow for rapid deployment and can gather data quickly in places and ways that traditional measurement systems (bouys, profilers, etc.) cannot. A ROMS-based data assimilation method was developed that intelligently plans for and integrates AUV measurements with the goal of minimizing model standard deviation. An algorithm developed for this system is first described that optimizes paths for AUVs that seeks to improve the model by gathering data in high-interest …

Investigating Wood Welding Parameters Using A Prototype Welding Machine, Timothy R. Melin Dec 2010

Investigating Wood Welding Parameters Using A Prototype Welding Machine, Timothy R. Melin

Master's Theses

Understanding how different processing variables influence wood welded bonds is vital if the technique will ever be used to create engineered lumber without using adhesives. A variation of vibration welding, wood welding uses pressure and friction to bond materials together. During welding, heat causes a softening in the wood, a naturally occurring composite material. This softening leads to fiber entanglement and a bond forms upon cooling.

The goal of this research was to investigate several processing aspects of the wood welding procedure. A prototype wood welding machine, designed and fabricated from the ground up, was used to investigate the effects …
