Energy Harvesting From Exercise Machines: Comparative Study Of Ehfem Performance With Dc-Dc Converters And Dissipative Overvoltage Protection Circuit, Cameron Kiddoo
Master's Theses
Energy Harvesting from Exercise Machines (EHFEM) is an ongoing project pursuing alternate forms of sustainable energy for Cal Poly State University. The EHFEM project seeks to acquire user-generated DC power from exercise machines and sell that energy back to the local grid as AC power. The end goal of the EHFEM project aims to integrate a final design with existing elliptical fitness trainers for student and faculty use in Cal Poly’s Recreational Center. This report examines whether including the DC-DC converter in the EHFEM setup produces AC power to the electric grid more efficiently and consistently than an EHFEM system …

Rules Based Analysis Engine For Application Layer Ids, David Scrobonia
Master's Theses
Web application attack volume, complexity, and costs have risen as people, companies, and entire industries move online. Solutions implemented to defend web applications against malicious activity have traditionally been implemented at the network or host layer. While this is helpful for detecting some attacks, it does not provide the gran- ularity to see malicious behavior occurring at the application layer. The AppSensor project, an application level intrusion detection system (IDS), is an example of a tool that operates in this layer. AppSensor monitors users within the application by observing activity in suspicious areas not able to be seen by traditional …

Taruc: A Topology-Aware Resource Utility And Contention Benchmark, Gavin Baker, Chris Lupo
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Computer architects have increased hardware parallelism and power efficiency by integrating massively parallel hardware accelerators (coprocessors) into compute systems. Many modern HPC clusters now consist of multi-CPU nodes along with additional hardware accelerators in the form of graphics processing units (GPUs). Each CPU and GPU is integrated with system memory via communication links (QPI and PCIe) and multi-channel memory controllers. The increasing density of these heterogeneous computing systems has resulted in complex performance phenomena including nonuniform memory access (NUMA) and resource contention that make application performance hard to predict and tune. This paper presents the Topology Aware Resource Usability and …

Interactions Of A Counter-Rotating Vortex Pair At Multiple Offsets, Kyle Forster, Tracie J. Barber, Sammy Diasinos, Graham Doig
Aerospace Engineering
The interactions between two streamwise vortices were investigated by wind tunnel testing of two NACA0012 vanes at various lateral offsets. One vane was spaced 10 chord lengths (C) downstream of the other, with both at an angle of incidence of 8 degrees and a Reynolds number of 7 x 104. The evolution of the vortex pair was observed until 6.5C behind the downstream vane using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). It was found that proximity of the upstream vortex to the downstream vane had a significant effect on the rotational rate of the subsequent vortex pair, with far offset …
Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell
Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell
Master's Theses
With the prevalence of computing, many workers today are confined to desk within an office. By sitting in these positions for long periods of time, workers are prone to develop one of many musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as carpal tunnel syndrome. In order to prevent MSDs in the long term, workers must employ good sitting habits. One promising method to ensure good workplace posture is through camera monitoring. To date, camera systems have been used in determining posture in a clean environment. However, an occluded and cluttered background, which is typical in an office setting, imposes a great challenge for …

Creating a bicycle with a rideable geometry is more complicated than it may appear, with today’s mainstay designs having evolved through years of iteration. This slow evolution coupled with the bicycle’s intricate mechanical system has lead most builders to base their new geometries off of previous work rather than expand into new design spaces. This crutch can lead to slow bicycle iteration rates, often causing bicycles to all look about the same. To combat this, several bicycle design models have been created over the years, with each attempting to define a bicycle’s handling characteristics given its physical geometry. However, these …
