Theses and Dissertations

A fault injection tool has been created to emulate single event upset (SEU) behavior within the configuration memory of an FPGA. This tool is able to rapidly and accurately determine the dynamic sensitive cross section of the configuration memory for a given FPGA design. This tool enables the reliability of FPGA designs and fault tolerance schemes to be quickly and accurately tested. The validity of testing performed with this fault injection tool has been confirmed through radiation testing. A radiation test was conducted at Crocker Nuclear Laboratory using a proton accelerator in order to determine the actual dynamic sensitive cross …

Stratified Waveguide Grating Coupler For Normal Fiber Incidence, Gregory P. Nordin, D. M. Chambers, J. Jiang, B. Wang Apr 2005

Stratified Waveguide Grating Coupler For Normal Fiber Incidence, Gregory P. Nordin, D. M. Chambers, J. Jiang, B. Wang

Faculty Publications

We propose a new stratified waveguide grating coupler (SWGC) to couple light from a fiber at normal incidence into a planar waveguide. SWGCs are designed to operate in the strong coupling regime without intermediate optics between the fiber and the waveguide. Two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation in conjunction with microgenetic algorithm optimization shows that about 72% coupling efficiency is possible for fiber (core size of 8.3 μm and ∆=0.36%) to slab waveguide (1.2- μm core and ∆=3.1%) coupling. We show that the phase-matching and Bragg conditions are simultaneously satisfied through the fundamental leaky mode.

A Flexible Circuit-Switched Communication Network For Fpga-Based Soc Design, Clint Richard Hilton Apr 2005

A Flexible Circuit-Switched Communication Network For Fpga-Based Soc Design, Clint Richard Hilton

Theses and Dissertations

As FPGA densities continue to improve, single chips are becoming capable of implementing larger and more complex systems. Even today these systems may include several processors working in conjuction with a handful of other standard interfaces or custom modules. Additional system complexity naturally leads to added complexity throughout the different design and implementation stages. Attempting to design such a system while maintaining high performance and within a reasonable time frame is becoming more and more difficult. Architectural design approaches ranging from direct module interconnection to sophisticated bus schemes have been used to build such systems, all with their own trade-offs. …

Developing A Gis And Hydrological Modeling Approach For Sustainable Water Resources Management In The West Bank -- Palestine, Walid Wajeeh Sabbah

Theses and Dissertations

This research deals with setting up a GIS and hydrological modeling based approach for sustainable water resources management in the West Bank of Palestine. This water sustainability approach took into consideration the water balance, the social, the economic, the demographic, the environmental, and the institutional components in order to enhance and promote the sustainable development in Palestine, both on the short and long runs. To evaluate the water balance component, a methodology was introduced to create the Water Sustainability Map (WSM). Since the groundwater is currently the only accessible water source by the Palestinians, the WSM is represented by the …

Reducing Energy In Fpga Multipliers Through Glitch Reduction, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin Apr 2005

Reducing Energy In Fpga Multipliers Through Glitch Reduction, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: NASA Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO). While FPGAs provide exibility for performing high-performance DSP functions, they consume a significant amount of power. For arithmetic circuits, a large portion of the dynamic power is wasted on unproductive signal glitches. Pipelining can be used to significantly reduce the unproductive power wasted in signal glitches. This paper presents a methodology for estimating the amount of power consumed by glitches and applies this methodology to non-pipelined, pipelined, and digit-serial multipliers. This glitch estimation is used to evaluate these multipliers using four energy metrics: energy per operation, energy delay, energy throughput, and energy density. …

Calibrating Seawinds And Quikscat Scatterometers Using Natural Land Targets, David G. Long, Lucas B. Kunz Apr 2005

Calibrating Seawinds And Quikscat Scatterometers Using Natural Land Targets, David G. Long, Lucas B. Kunz

Faculty Publications

The SeaWinds-on-QuikSCAT (QuikSCAT) and SeaWinds-on-ADEOS-2 (SeaWinds) scatterometers measure the normalized radar backscatter (O) of the earth's surface. These identical radar sensors are on different spaceborne platforms in similar orbits. QuikSCAT and SeaWinds data are used to infer near-surface wind vectors, polar sea-ice extent, polar-ice melt events, etc. In order to verify the relative calibration of these sensors, a simple cross calibration based on land backscatter measurements is performed. A first-order polynomial model is used to remove the incidence angle dependence of O for selected regions of the Amazon rainforest and the Sahara Desert. It is shown that the two sensors …

Electrothermomechanical Modeling Of A Surface-Micromachined Linear Displacement Microactuator, Christian D. Lott Mar 2005

Electrothermomechanical Modeling Of A Surface-Micromachined Linear Displacement Microactuator, Christian D. Lott

Theses and Dissertations

The electrothermomechanical characteristics of an electrically-heated polycrystallinesilicon microactuator are explored. Using finite-difference techniques, an electrothermal model based on the balance of heat dissipation and heat losses is developed. For accurate simulation, the relevant temperature dependent properties from the microactuator material are included in the model. The electrothermal model accurately predicts the steady-state power required to hold position, and the energy consumed during the thermal transient. Thermomechanical models use the predictions of temperature from the electrothermal solution to calculate displacement and force from pseudo-rigid-body approximations and commercial finite-element code. The models are verified by comparing experimental data to simulation results of …

Equalization Techniques For Multipath Mitigation In Aeronautical Telemetry, Vladimir Ignacio Paje Mar 2005

Equalization Techniques For Multipath Mitigation In Aeronautical Telemetry, Vladimir Ignacio Paje

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the application of adaptive equalization based on the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) and the decision-feedback minimum mean squared error (DF-MMSE) concept to the two compatible offset QPSK waveforms (FQPSK and SOQPSK-TG) that constitute the ARTM Tier-1 waveforms. An adaptive version of the DF-MMSE equalizer is developed and applied to this application. In the presence of frequency selective multipath interference typically encountered in aeronautical telemetry, both equalization techniques are shown to provide reliable performance for FQPSK and SOQPSK-TG. The performance of both waveforms with the DF-MMSE equalizer is slightly better than that using the CMA equalizer. Implementation trade-offs …

Analytical Modeling Of Wood-Frame Shear Walls And Diaphragms, Johnn Paul Judd Mar 2005

Analytical Modeling Of Wood-Frame Shear Walls And Diaphragms, Johnn Paul Judd

Theses and Dissertations

Analytical models of wood-frame shear walls and diaphragms for use in monotonic, quasi-static (cyclic), and dynamic analyses are developed in this thesis. A new analytical model is developed to accurately represent connections between sheathing panels and wood framing members (sheathing-to-framing connections) in structural analysis computer programs. This new model represents sheathing–to–framing connections using an oriented pair of nonlinear springs. Unlike previous models, the new analytical model for sheathing-to-framing connections is suitable for both monotonic, cyclic, or dynamic analyses. Moreover, the new model does not need to be scaled or adjusted. The new analytical model may be implemented in a general …

All Hexahedral Meshing Of Multiple Source, Multiple Target, Multiple Axis Geometries Via Automatic Grafting And Sweeping, Matthew N. Earp Mar 2005

All Hexahedral Meshing Of Multiple Source, Multiple Target, Multiple Axis Geometries Via Automatic Grafting And Sweeping, Matthew N. Earp

Theses and Dissertations

The development of algorithms for the automatic creation of finite element meshes composed entirely of hexahedra (all-hex) is an active area of research. All-hex meshes are desirable for their characteristic of high accuracy with a low node count. Sweeping is one of the most widely used algorithms for generating all-hex meshes. A limitation of sweeping, however, is that it can currently be applied only to prismatic or extruded geometry types. This thesis develops a method to combine sweeping with another algorithm known as "Grafting". Grafting adjusts the mesh on one volume to conform to a second volume. In this manner …

Phase Locked Flow Measurements Of Steady And Unsteady Vortex Generator Jets In A Separating Boundary Layer, Laura C. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Vortex generator jets (VGJs) have been found to be an effective method of active separation control on the suction side of a low pressure turbine (LPT) blade at low Reynolds numbers. The flow mechanisms responsible for this control were studied and documented in order to provide a basis for future improvements in LPT design. Data were collected using a stereo PIV system that enabled all three components of velocity to be measured. Steady VGJs were injected into a laminar boundary layer on a flat plate (non-separating boundary layer) in order to more fully understand the characteristics and behavior of the …

Structure From Motion Using Optical Flow Probability Distributions, Paul Clark Merrell Mar 2005

Structure From Motion Using Optical Flow Probability Distributions, Paul Clark Merrell

Theses and Dissertations

Several novel structure from motion algorithms are presented that are designed to more effectively manage the problem of noise. In many practical applications, structure from motion algorithms fail to work properly because of the noise in the optical flow values. Most structure from motion algorithms implicitly assume that the noise is identically distributed and that the noise is white. Both assumptions are false. Some points can be track more easily than others and some points can be tracked more easily in a particular direction. The accuracy of each optical flow value can be quantified using an optical flow probability distribution. …

Developing A Design Space Model Using A Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Schema In A Product Lifecycle Management System To Capture Knowledge For Reuse, Nathaniel Luke Fife Mar 2005

Developing A Design Space Model Using A Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Schema In A Product Lifecycle Management System To Capture Knowledge For Reuse, Nathaniel Luke Fife

Theses and Dissertations

Parametric strategies for design automation and optimization can have a big impact on engineering design. When parametric tasks and optimization frameworks and methods are combined, theses strategies can be used to make up what is known as a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) schema. Knowledge of a design space can be modeled by using a MDO schema to represent the design process. However, current MDO frameworks used to create this schema lack the scope to capture enterprise wide knowledge for reuse and collaboration. Concurrent with the development of MDO, many companies are moving toward increased use of product lifecycle management (PLM). …

Simulation-Based Design Under Uncertainty For Compliant Microelectromechanical Systems, Jonathan W. Wittwer Mar 2005

Simulation-Based Design Under Uncertainty For Compliant Microelectromechanical Systems, Jonathan W. Wittwer

Theses and Dissertations

The high cost of experimentation and product development in the field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has led to a greater emphasis on simulation-based design for increasing first-pass design success and reliability. The use of compliant or flexible mechanisms can help eliminate friction, wear, and backlash, but compliant MEMS are sensitive to variations in material properties and geometry. This dissertation proposes approaches for design stage uncertainty analysis, model validation, and robust optimization of nonlinear compliant MEMS to account for critical process uncertainties including residual stress, layer thicknesses, edge bias, and material stiffness. Methods for simulating and mitigating the effects of non-idealities …

The Purposes And Evaluation Methods For State Residential General Contractor Licensing, James Ellis Fenn Mar 2005

The Purposes And Evaluation Methods For State Residential General Contractor Licensing, James Ellis Fenn

Theses and Dissertations

The main topic in the licensing debate is whether licensing affects construction quality. Available literature and previous studies indicate that it does not. The real question is not whether licensing improves quality, but whether the improving quality is the actual purpose of licensing. There is little information available on the purpose of licensing as defined by state licensing departments as well as a general lack of information on how states evaluate whether licensing is fulfilling the intended purpose. In order to effectively resolve some of the issues surrounding the construction licensing debate, the true purpose of licensing and the methods …

An Analysis Of Seawinds Simultaneous Wind/Rain Retrieval In Severe Weather Events, Jeffrey R. Allen Mar 2005

An Analysis Of Seawinds Simultaneous Wind/Rain Retrieval In Severe Weather Events, Jeffrey R. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Scatterometers, such as SeaWinds, can provide wide coverage of ocean surface winds. They estimate near-surface wind vectors by relating measured radar backscatter to a geophysical model function. However, SeaWinds measurements are also sensitive to rain, and conventional wind retrieval degrades in rainy conditions. An algorithm that exploits SeaWinds' sensitivity to both wind and rain has be developed. This algorithm, termed simultaneous wind/rain retrieval, retrieves both wind vectors and rain rates for a given ocean area. Instantaneous results of simultaneous wind/rain retrieval in Hurricane events is analyzed through comparison with the NEXRAD ground-based radar system. This comparison allows validation of retrieved …

Real-Time Evaluation Of Vision-Based Navigation For Autonomous Landing Of A Rotorcraft Unmanned Aerial Vehicle In A Non-Cooperative Environment, Dale D. Rowley

Theses and Dissertations

Landing a rotorcraft unmanned aerial vehicle (RUAV) without human supervision is a capability that would significantly broaden the usefulness of UAVs. The benefits are even greater if the functionality is expanded to involve landing sites with unknown terrain and a lack of GPS or other positioning aids. Examples of these types of non-cooperative environments could range from remote mountainous regions to an urban building rooftop or a cluttered parking lot. The research of this thesis builds upon an approach that was initiated at NASA Ames Research Center to advance technology in the landing phase of RUAV operations. The approach consists …
