Relative Target Estimation Using A Cascade Of Extended Kalman Filters, Jerel Nielsen, Randal Beard
Relative Target Estimation Using A Cascade Of Extended Kalman Filters, Jerel Nielsen, Randal Beard
Student Works
This paper presents a method of tracking multiple ground targets from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a 3D reference frame. The tracking method uses a monocular camera and makes no assumptions on the shape of the terrain or the target motion. The UAV runs two cascaded estimators. The first is an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which is responsible for tracking the UAV’s state, such as position and velocity relative to a fixed frame. The second estimator is an EKF that is responsible for estimating a fixed number of landmarks within the camera’s field of view. Landmarks are parameterized by …
Combined Model Predictive Control And Scheduling With Dominant Time Constant Compensation, Logan Beal, Junho Park, Damon Petersen, Sean C. Warnick, John Hedengren
Combined Model Predictive Control And Scheduling With Dominant Time Constant Compensation, Logan Beal, Junho Park, Damon Petersen, Sean C. Warnick, John Hedengren

Linear model predictive control is extended to both control and optimize a product grade schedule. The proposed methods are time-scaling of the linear dynamics based on throughput rates and grade-based objectives for product scheduling based on a mathematical program with complementarity constraints. The linear model is adjusted with a residence time approximation to time-scale the dynamics based on throughput. Although nonlinear models directly account for changing dynamics, the model form is restricted to linear differential equations to enable fast online cycle times for large-scale and real-time systems. This method of extending a linear time-invariant model for scheduling is designed for …
Large-Scale Testing Of Low-Strength Cellular Concrete For Skewed Bridge Abutments, Tyler Kirk Remund
Large-Scale Testing Of Low-Strength Cellular Concrete For Skewed Bridge Abutments, Tyler Kirk Remund
Theses and Dissertations
Low-strength cellular concrete consists of a cement slurry that is aerated prior to placement. It remains a largely untested material with properties somewhere between those of soil, geofoam, and typical controlled low-strength material (CLSM). The benefits of using this material include its low density, ease of placement, and ability to self-compact. Although the basic laboratory properties of this material have been investigated, little information exists about the performance of this material in the field, much less the passive resistance behavior of this material in the field. In order to evaluate the use of cellular concrete as a backfill material behind bridge …
Distribution Of Essential Tremor In The Degrees Of Freedom Of The Upper Limb, Adam Charles Pigg
Distribution Of Essential Tremor In The Degrees Of Freedom Of The Upper Limb, Adam Charles Pigg
Theses and Dissertations
This study seeks to understand upper limb tremor in subjects with essential tremor (ET). A thorough understanding of tremor distribution will allow for the more effective development of tremor suppression devices, which offer an alternative to current treatments. Previous studies primarily focused on tremor in the hand only. This study seeks to characterize the distribution of tremor throughout the upper limb.We measured tremor in 25 subjects diagnosed with ET using motion capture, which provided displacement information of the limb during multiple postural and kinetic tasks. Inverse kinematics allowed us to analyze the motion capture data in the 7 major degrees …
Improved Single Molecule Detection Platform Using A Buried Arrow Design, Thomas Allen Wall
Improved Single Molecule Detection Platform Using A Buried Arrow Design, Thomas Allen Wall
Theses and Dissertations
As the microelectronics industry pushes microfabrication processes further, the lab-on-a-chip field has continued to piggy-back off the industry's fabrication capabilities with the goal of producing total chemical and biological systems on small chip-size platforms. One important function of such systems is the ability to perform single molecule detection. There are currently many methods being researched for performing single molecule detection, both macro and micro in scale. This dissertation focuses on an optofluidic, lab-on-a-chip platform called the ARROW biosensor, which possesses several advantages over macro-scale single molecule detection platforms. These advantages include an amplification-free detection scheme, cheap parallel fabrication techniques, rapid …
Deep Visual Gravity Vector Detection For Unmanned Aircraft Attitude Estimation, Gary J. Ellingson, David Wingate, Tim Mclain
Deep Visual Gravity Vector Detection For Unmanned Aircraft Attitude Estimation, Gary J. Ellingson, David Wingate, Tim Mclain
Faculty Publications
This paper demonstrates a feasible method for using a deep neural network as a sensor to estimate the attitude of a flying vehicle using only flight video. A dataset of still images and associated gravity vectors was collected and used to perform supervised learning. The network builds on a previously trained network and was trained to be able to approximate the attitude of the camera with an average error of about 8 degrees. Flight test video was recorded and processed with a relatively simple visual odometry method. The aircraft attitude is then estimated with the visual odometry as the state …
Relative Multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter For Observable Gps-Denied Navigation, Daniel P. Koch, David O. Wheeler, Randal Beard, Tim Mclain, Kevin M. Brink
Relative Multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter For Observable Gps-Denied Navigation, Daniel P. Koch, David O. Wheeler, Randal Beard, Tim Mclain, Kevin M. Brink
Faculty Publications
This work presents a multiplicative extended Kalman filter for estimating the relative state of a multirotor vehicle operating in a GPS-denied environment. The filter fuses data from an inertial measurement unit and altimeter with relative-pose updates from a keyframe-based visual odometry or laser scan-matching algorithm. Because the global position and heading states of the vehicle are unobservable in the absence of global measurements such as GPS, the filter in this paper estimates the state with respect to a local frame that is colocated with the odometry keyframe. As a result, the odometry update provides nearly-direct measurements of the relative vehicle …
Relative Navigation Of Autonomous Gps-Degraded Micro Air Vehicles, David O. Wheeler, Daniel P. Koch, James S. Jackson, Gary J. Ellingson, Paul W. Nyholm, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard
Relative Navigation Of Autonomous Gps-Degraded Micro Air Vehicles, David O. Wheeler, Daniel P. Koch, James S. Jackson, Gary J. Ellingson, Paul W. Nyholm, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard
Faculty Publications
Many current approaches for navigation of micro air vehicles (MAVs) in GPS-degraded environments use a globally-referenced state for estimation and control, even though this state is not observable when GPS is unavailable. By working with respect to a local reference frame, the relative navigation (RN) framework presented in this paper ensures that the state maintains observability and that the uncertainty remains bounded, consistent, and normally-distributed. RN further insulates flight-critical estimation and control processes from the large global updates common in GPS-degraded MAV flight. This paper provides a thorough description of the details needed to successfully implement the RN framework on …
Crack Healing In 304l Stainless Steel Using Additive Manufacturing And Friction Stir Processing (Fsp), Cameron Scott Gygi
Crack Healing In 304l Stainless Steel Using Additive Manufacturing And Friction Stir Processing (Fsp), Cameron Scott Gygi
Theses and Dissertations
Continuing an investigation on using FSP to heal stress corrosion cracks (SCC) in welds on nuclear reactors, this study seeks to use AM in addition to FSP to aid crack repair. Previous studies address that current repair technology on nuclear reactors involves the use of TIG welding which can allow helium atoms to aggregate and form voids at the grain boundaries. This weakens the material and renders the repair ineffective. Another previous study evaluated the effectiveness of FSP alone in repairing SCC which did have defects depending on the parameters used during FSP. This study evaluated the use of AM …
Improving The Floris Wind Plant Model For Compatibility With Gradient-Based Optimization, Jared Thomas, Pieter Gebraad, Andrew Ning
Improving The Floris Wind Plant Model For Compatibility With Gradient-Based Optimization, Jared Thomas, Pieter Gebraad, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
The FLOw Redirection and Induction in Steady-state (FLORIS) model, a parametric wind turbine wake model that predicts steady state wake characteristics based on wind turbine position and yaw angle, was developed for optimization of control settings and turbine locations. This paper provides details on the recent changes made to the FLORIS model to make the model more suitable for gradient-based optimization. Changes to the FLORIS model were made to remove discontinuities and add curvature to regions of non-physical zero gradient. Exact gradients for the FLORIS model were obtained using algorithmic differentiation. A set of three case studies demonstrate that using …
Cell-Free Synthesis Of Proteins With Unnatural Amino Acids: Exploring Fitness Landscapes, Engineering Membrane Proteins And Expanding The Genetic Code, Song Min Schinn
Cell-Free Synthesis Of Proteins With Unnatural Amino Acids: Exploring Fitness Landscapes, Engineering Membrane Proteins And Expanding The Genetic Code, Song Min Schinn
Theses and Dissertations
Unnatural amino acids (uAA) expand the structural and functional possibilities of proteins. Numerous previous studies have demonstrated uAA as a powerful tool for protein engineering, but challenges also remain. Three notable such challenges include: (1) the fitness of uAA-incorporated proteins are difficult to predict and time-consuming to screen with conventional methods, (2) uAA incorporation in difficult-to-express proteins (e.g. membrane proteins such as G-protein coupled receptors) remain challenging, and (3) the incorporation of multiple types of uAA are still limited. In response, we pose cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS), a rapid and versatile in vitro expression system, as a platform to explore …
Performance-Based Liquefaction Triggering Analyses With Two Liquefaction Models Using The Cone Penetration Test, Alex Michael Arndt
Performance-Based Liquefaction Triggering Analyses With Two Liquefaction Models Using The Cone Penetration Test, Alex Michael Arndt
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the use of performance-based engineering in earthquake liquefaction hazard analysis with Cone Penetration Test data (CPT). This work builds upon previous research involving performance-based liquefaction analysis with the Standard Penetration Test (SPT). Two new performance-based liquefaction triggering models are presented herein. The two models used in this liquefaction analysis are modified from the case-history based probabilistic models proposed by Ku et al. (2012) and Boulanger and Idriss (2014). Using these models, a comparison is made between the performance-based method and the conventional pseudo-probabilistic method. This comparison uses the 2014 USGS probabilistic seismic hazard models for both methods. …

Custom 3d Printer And Resin For 18 Μm × 20 Μm Mi- Crofluidic Flow Channels, Hua Gong, Bryce P. Bickham, Adam T. Woolley, Gregory P. Nordin
Faculty Publications
While there is great interest in 3D printing for microfluidic device fabrication, to-date the achieved feature sizes have not been in the truly microfluidic regime (μm). In this paper we demonstrate that a custom Digital Light Processor stereolithographic (DLP-SLA) 3D printer and a specifically-designed, low cost, custom resin can readily achieve flow channel cross sections as small as 18 μm × 20 μm. Our 3D printer has a projected image plane resolution of 7.6 μm and uses a 385 nm LED, which dramatically increases the available selection of UV absorbers for resin formulation compared to 3D printers with 405 nm …
Blending And Mixed Variational Principles To Overcome Locking Phenomena In Isogeometric Beams, Kyle Dennis Richardson
Blending And Mixed Variational Principles To Overcome Locking Phenomena In Isogeometric Beams, Kyle Dennis Richardson
Theses and Dissertations
Two methods for overcoming locking phenomena in isogeometric beams are presented. The first method blends the rotation of a Timoshenko beam with the rotation of a Bernoulli beam to produce realistic displacements in straight beams. The second method uses mixed variational principles, specifically the Hu-Washizu Principle, to produce realistic displacements as well as realistic strains without post-processing.
Improved Leaky-Mode Waveguide Spatial Light Modulators For Three Dimensional Displays, Scott Alexander Gneiting
Improved Leaky-Mode Waveguide Spatial Light Modulators For Three Dimensional Displays, Scott Alexander Gneiting
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis improves on the design of the leaky-mode spatial light modulator, LMW-SLM, presented by Dr. Smalley[1]. Improvements include: input coupling gratings, a pulsed laser input, output coupling gratings, and a 3D printed adjustable module for the stabilization of critical alignments. First, input coupling gratings reduce the cost of the LMW-SLM from $500 to around $2, a drop in cost of over two orders of magnitude. This enables multiple modulators to be used in a single display and allows for an inexpensive modular design to be created. Second, a pulsed laser input allows for image creation without the use of …
A Graphical Representation Of Exposed Parallelism, Gustavo Enrique Rodriguez Villamizar
A Graphical Representation Of Exposed Parallelism, Gustavo Enrique Rodriguez Villamizar
Theses and Dissertations
Modern-day microprocessors are measured in part by their parallel performance. Parallelizing sequential programs is a complex task, requiring data dependence analysis of the program constructs. Researchers in the field of parallel optimization are working on shifting the optimization effort from the programmer to the compiler. The goal of this work is for the compiler to visually expose the parallel characteristics of the program to researchers as well as programmers for a better understanding of the parallel properties of their programs. In order to do that we developed Exposed Parallelism Visualization (EPV), a statically-generated graphical tool that builds a parallel task …
High-Voltage Measurements Using Slab-Coupled Optical Sensors, Legrand Jared Shumway
High-Voltage Measurements Using Slab-Coupled Optical Sensors, Legrand Jared Shumway
Theses and Dissertations
This work highlights slab coupled optical sensors (SCOS) and their ability to measure high voltages. Although other high voltage measurement techniques exist, most of these techniques are electrical devices and are therefore more susceptible to stray ground currents and other electromagnetic interferences (EMI), which may cause signal distortion. Optical sensors are less susceptible to such interferences and these sensors, such as the Pockels cell, have been used in measuring high voltage. SCOS offer an alternative method of measuring high voltage optically. Consisting of an optical fiber and an electro-optic slab waveguide, SCOS have the advantage of being very small in …

Quick Shear Testing Of Aggregate Base Materials Stabilized With Geogrid, Rawley Jack Selk
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to apply a previously recommended laboratory testing protocol to specific aggregate base materials that are also the subject of ongoing full-scale field testing. The scope of this research involved three aggregate base materials selected from three sites where full-scale field testing programs have been established. The first and second field sites included five different geogrid types, categorized as either biaxial or triaxial, in a singlelayer configuration, while the third site included only the triaxial geogrid type in either a singleor double-layer configuration. Geogrid-stabilized and unstabilized control specimens were evaluated using the American Association of …
A Comprehensive Coal Conversion Model Extended To Oxy-Coal Conditions, Troy Michael Holland
A Comprehensive Coal Conversion Model Extended To Oxy-Coal Conditions, Troy Michael Holland
Theses and Dissertations
CFD simulations are valuable tools in evaluating and deploying oxy-fuel and other carbon capture technologies either as retrofit technologies or for new construction. However, accurate predictive simulations require physically realistic submodels with low computational requirements. In particular, comprehensive char oxidation and gasification models have been developed that describe multiple reaction and diffusion processes. This work extends a comprehensive char conversion code (the Carbon Conversion Kinetics or CCK model), which treats surface oxidation and gasification reactions as well as processes such as film diffusion, pore diffusion, ash encapsulation, and annealing. In this work, the CCK model was thoroughly investigated with a …
Particle Deposition Behavior From Coal-Derived Syngas In Gas Turbines At Modern Turbine Inlet Temperatures, Robert Laycock
Particle Deposition Behavior From Coal-Derived Syngas In Gas Turbines At Modern Turbine Inlet Temperatures, Robert Laycock
Theses and Dissertations
Certain types of fuel used for combustion in land-based gas turbines can contain traces of ash when introduced into a gas turbine. Examples include synfuel, from the gasification of coal, and heavy fuel oil. When these ash particles travel through the hot gas path of the gas turbine they can deposit on turbine vanes and blades. As deposits grow, they can reduce turbine efficiency and damage turbine hardware. As turbine inlet temperatures increase, ash deposition rates increase as well.Experiments were conducted in the Turbine Accelerated Deposition Facility (TADF) at Brigham Young University to better understand ash deposition behavior at modern …
Continuous Permeability Measurement During Unidirectional Vacuum Infusion Processing, David Wayne Hoagland
Continuous Permeability Measurement During Unidirectional Vacuum Infusion Processing, David Wayne Hoagland
Theses and Dissertations
Composite materials have traditionally been used in high-end aerospace parts and low-end consumer parts. The reason for this separation in markets is the wide gap in technology between pre-preg materials processed in an autoclave and chop strand fiberglass blown into an open mold. Liquid composite molding has emerged as a bridge between inexpensive tooling and large, technical parts. Processes such as vacuum infusion have made it possible to utilize complex layups of reinforcement materials in an open mold style set-up, creating optimal conditions for composites to penetrate many new markets with rapid innovation. Flow simulation for liquid composite molding is …
Full-Scale Testing Of Blast-Induced Liquefaction Downdrag On Driven Piles In Sand, Luke Ian Kevan
Full-Scale Testing Of Blast-Induced Liquefaction Downdrag On Driven Piles In Sand, Luke Ian Kevan
Theses and Dissertations
Deep foundations such as driven piles are often used to bypass liquefiable layers of soil and bear on more competent strata. When liquefaction occurs, the skin friction around the deep foundation goes to zero in the liquefiable layer. As the pore pressures dissipate, the soil settles. As the soil settles, negative skin friction develops owing to the downward movement of the soil surrounding the pile. To investigate the magnitude of the skin friction along the shaft three driven piles, an H-pile, a closed end pipe pile, and a concrete square pile, were instrumented and used to measure soil induced load …
Vivado Design Interface: Enabling Cad-Tool Design For Next Generation Xilinx Fpga Devices, Thomas James Townsend
Vivado Design Interface: Enabling Cad-Tool Design For Next Generation Xilinx Fpga Devices, Thomas James Townsend
Theses and Dissertations
The popularity of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) has grown in recent years due to their potential performance advantages over sequential software, and as a prototyping platform for application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC). Vendors such as Xilinx offer automated tool suites that can be used to program FPGAs based on a RTL description. These tool suites are sufficient forgeneral users, but they usually don't provide the opportunity to integrate custom computer-aideddesign (CAD) tools into the regular design flow. Xilinx first offered this capability in their ISE tool suite with the Xilinx Design Language (XDL). Using XDL, a Xilinx design could be extracted …
Determining H2O Vapor Temperature And Concentration In Particle-Free And Particle-Laden Combustion Flows Using Spectral Line Emission Measurements, John Robert Tobiasson
Determining H2O Vapor Temperature And Concentration In Particle-Free And Particle-Laden Combustion Flows Using Spectral Line Emission Measurements, John Robert Tobiasson
Theses and Dissertations
There is a growing need for the clean generation of electricity in the world, and increased efficiency is one way to achieve cleaner generation. Increased efficiency may be achieved through an improved understanding of the heat flux of participating media in combustion environments. Real-time in-situ optical measurements of gas temperature and concentrations in combustion environments is needed. Optical methods do not disturb the flow characteristics and are not subject to the temperature limitation of current methods. Simpler, less-costly optical measurements than current methods would increase the ability to apply them in more circumstances. This work explores the ability to simultaneously …
Academic Packing For Commercial Fpga Architectures, Travis D. Haroldsen
Academic Packing For Commercial Fpga Architectures, Travis D. Haroldsen
Theses and Dissertations
With a few exceptions, academic packing algorithms for FPGAs are typically applied solely to theoretical architectures. This has allowed the algorithms to focus on the basic components of packing while abstracting away many of the details dictated by real hardware. As commercially available FPGAs have advanced, however, the academic algorithms and architectures have diverged significantly from their commercial counterparts. In this dissertation, the RapidSmith 2 framework is presented. This framework accurately reflects the architecture of Xilinx FPGAs and provides support for integrating custom tools into the commercial CAD tools. Using this framework, the RSVPack packing algorithm is implemented. The RSVPack …
Development Of A Simplified Performance-Based Procedure For The Assessment Of Liquefaction-Induced Settlements Using Liquefaction Loading Maps, Braden Michael Error
Development Of A Simplified Performance-Based Procedure For The Assessment Of Liquefaction-Induced Settlements Using Liquefaction Loading Maps, Braden Michael Error
Theses and Dissertations
Liquefaction-induced settlement can cause extensive damage to infrastructure. Quantifying the amount of settlement that may occur after an earthquake is crucial to seismic design. The Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center developed performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) as a probabilistic framework to characterize the risks associated with a seismic event. When applied to liquefaction-induced settlement, the PBEE framework provides a more complete and accurate representation of liquefaction hazard than other more conventional evaluation methods. Performance-based engineering is not widely used in practice, however, due to its complexity. In an attempt to make performance-based engineering methods more accessible to engineers for routine …

Economic Returns To Clean Water: Evidence From Us Historical Records., Joseph Price
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project was to use linked census records to evaluate the long-run effects of access to clean water. By linking individuals across census years we can specifically determine where they lived during their childhood and also have information about their educational attainment and earnings later in life (using the 1940 census). The project was designed to use a time period when the US was a developing country and beginning to use chlorination to clean its water to assess the economic returns to clean water.

Additional work in ongoing to extended the wake mode’s usefulness for wake interactions and closely-spaced turbines.
Rebuilding Kidneys, Alonzo D. Cook, Deverly L. Roeder, Jonathan J. Wisco
Rebuilding Kidneys, Alonzo D. Cook, Deverly L. Roeder, Jonathan J. Wisco
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The motivation for this work was the tremendous need for replacement kidneys. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) affects over 500,000 patients in the U.S. and costs Medicare $30 Billion annually for dialysis and transplant procedures. Our overall objective was to engineer kidneys from decellularized porcine extracellular matrix (DPECM) scaffolds and cell cultures grown from human progenitor cells. The primary reason for using human cells was to develop non-immunogenic kidneys that can be used to treat the more than 100,000 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients awaiting a transplant, thus obviating the need for post-transplant immunosuppressive therapy and the associated risks of acute …
