The Leaching Of Electrodeposition Of Iron, Emmett G. Simmons May 1933

The Leaching Of Electrodeposition Of Iron, Emmett G. Simmons

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Electrolytic iron as deposited is brittle and therefore must be annealed. After annealing, the material is ductile and closely resembles copper in its behavior under work. It is claimed to be more resistant to corrosion than dead soft iron. It also has the advantage of corroding uniformly ( ordinary soft iron develops pin holes which shorten its life considerably).

The extreme purity of electrolytic iron namely makes it very suitable as a base metal for alloys. Its ductility opens up a field for use in the manufacture of cold rolled strip, seamless tubes, and wire.

Fitting The Mechanical Refrigerator Into The Home, E. B. Lewis, M. P. Brunig May 1933

Fitting The Mechanical Refrigerator Into The Home, E. B. Lewis, M. P. Brunig

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Within the last five years the mechanical refrigerator has become a popular piece of household equipment. Its year-round use has caused architects and others interested in planning for the convenience of the housewife to recommend placing the new cabinet in kitchens and other convenient places, with little thought about the effect on the operation of the refrigerator. The purpose of this publication is to point out some of the conditions under which the refrigerator has been expected to operate successfully, and some of the effects of these conditions upon the operation of the machine.

Playgrounds And Recreation Areas In Real Estate Subdivisions, Joseph L. Doyle Apr 1933

Playgrounds And Recreation Areas In Real Estate Subdivisions, Joseph L. Doyle

Bachelors’ Theses

With the coming of the machine age, the need of adequate playground and recreation areas in large cities is steadily increasing. During the past ten years, or more, congested cities have found it necessary to supply at any cost, playground and. recreation areas, for their people, who from year to year find that they have more and more leisure time at their disposal. In an unlimited number of instances the only way this could be secured was by buying valuable land, wrecking the buildings thereon, and thus provide open spaces for recreation at an enormous cost to the city. Had …

The Effect Of Variations In The Rate Of Heating On The P.C.E. Value Of Clays, Kenneth Emerson Evans Jan 1933

The Effect Of Variations In The Rate Of Heating On The P.C.E. Value Of Clays, Kenneth Emerson Evans

Bachelors Theses

"Softening temperature of ceramic materials vary with the rate of heating. Recently much discussion has centered about the proper rate of heating of cones in the P.C.E. test. The most obvious reason for the discussion is that the cones are affected by the rate of heating when tested alone for softening temperature"--Introduction, page 1.

A Comparative Study Of The American Society For Testing Materials Spall Test And The Federal Specifications Spall Test, Justus Jordan Beinlich Jan 1933

A Comparative Study Of The American Society For Testing Materials Spall Test And The Federal Specifications Spall Test, Justus Jordan Beinlich

Bachelors Theses

"Commercial brands of fireclay brick will be tested with both the American Society for Testing Materials and the Federal Specifications Spall Tests in order to determine whether the two tests are consistent in the indication of resistance to spalling. It is suggested that the properties of a refractory affecting thermal spalling are reversible thermal expansion, elasticity, heat transfer, plastic flow, and strength. It is hoped that it will be possible to explain the discrepancies that may arise in the results of this work in terms of the above physical properties or else find a reasonable agreement between the two tests"--Introduction, …

Study Of The Substitution Of Barite For Barium Carbonate In A Whiteware Body Suitable For Brick Manufacture, Charles Edward Achuff Jan 1933

Study Of The Substitution Of Barite For Barium Carbonate In A Whiteware Body Suitable For Brick Manufacture, Charles Edward Achuff

Bachelors Theses

"Some years ago a method of manufacturing white brick from Georgia Kaolin and apatite rock was developed. This was successful for supplying an attractive white brick to the southern trade, until difficulties were encountered in securing apatite rock of sufficiently high grade to insure the continuance of manufacture of the brick...With the foregoing facts at hand, a study was made of the utilization of an auxiliary flux to replace the apatite rock. A commercial brick was developed, wherein eight (8) per cent of this flux, with forty-two (42) per cent potters flint and fifty (50) per cent Georgia Kaolin was …

The Replacement Of Calcium Carbonate With Calcium Chloride And Calcium Fluoride In A Whiteware Body, Charles Richard Rosenbaum Jan 1933

The Replacement Of Calcium Carbonate With Calcium Chloride And Calcium Fluoride In A Whiteware Body, Charles Richard Rosenbaum

Bachelors Theses

"In the steel industry it is a common metallurgical practice to add fluospar sic (CaF₂), to a slag to render it more fluid. Ladoo states that the fluospar sic , thus added, forms eutechtics with the silica, alumina, calcium and barium sulfates, rendering them more fusible. The fluospar sic does not decompose, but forms solutions or eutechtics with other substances in the slag. He further states that calcium chloride (CaCl₂) has been used for this purpose but is apparently not as active, necessitating larger quantities per charge. It is also probably more expensive. Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) is commonly used as …

The Effect Of Reheating Certain Fire Brick On Pyrometric Cone Equivalents, Francis J. Louney Jan 1933

The Effect Of Reheating Certain Fire Brick On Pyrometric Cone Equivalents, Francis J. Louney

Bachelors Theses

"In a recent survey of the refractories field, especially with respect to the softening point of fire brick, it was suggested to the author that the possibility of reheating certain fire brick, according to the specifications given by the American Society for Testing Materials, might produce a difference in pyrometric cone equivalent from that of the original or unreheated sample. At present, there is considerable lack of knowledge regarding the problem, as evidenced by the utter lack of literature on the softening point resulting from the reheating of fire brick"--Introduction, leaf 1.

A Study Of The Evaporation Of Organic Liquids And Mixtures Of Organic Liquids, George Walter Eckert

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to make a study of the evaporation of organic solvents. The relative rates of evaporation of the single substances and binary and ternary mixtures are to be considered. A study of the changes in composition of binary and ternary mixtures that occur on evaporation are to be made. Information on the evaporation of organic liquids is important in relation to lacquers, and for that reason the solvents used in this work are liquids commonly used in making lacquers"--Introduction, page 2.

A Method For Increasing The Iodine Value Of The Saturated Fatty Acids, Richard Groves Holmes Jan 1933

A Method For Increasing The Iodine Value Of The Saturated Fatty Acids, Richard Groves Holmes

Masters Theses

"The work covered by this thesis was undertaken with the idea of finding a method whereby unsaturated oils, of the drying type (those having iodine values of one hundred fifty or above), could be made from the saturated fatty acids. After an exhaustive search of the literature no evidence was found that this means of producing the unsaturated acids had ever been developed. Work has been done on the chlorination products of the fatty acids, the processes being covered by patents. No evidence however was given as to the possible structure of these compounds"--Introduction, page 1.

The Relation Between The Mean Molecular Weight And The Absolute Viscosity Of Lubricating Oils, John Isler Moore Jan 1933

The Relation Between The Mean Molecular Weight And The Absolute Viscosity Of Lubricating Oils, John Isler Moore

Masters Theses

"Of all the properties required of a good lubricant the most important is that of the viscosity at the temperature of its use. Most lubricants consist of oils blended or compounded together in such a way as to produce an oil of a desired viscosity, falling in the special group of viscosities expressed by the Society of Automotive Engineers in their tabulations.

There have been several methods developed to enable the refiner to blend quickly and efficiently although Bell stated that the methods were largely that of trial and error. Herschel formed a chart for blending by the logarithmic rule …
