A Study Of Invert Emulsion Drilling Fluids, Edward R. Tegland Jan 1961

A Study Of Invert Emulsion Drilling Fluids, Edward R. Tegland

Masters Theses

"Since invert emulsions are being applied as drilling fluids to cope with special drilling and completion problems, evaluations of existing and new types of emulsions are needed. Three types of emulsions are evaluated in this study: (1) type A emulsions prepared with a commercial emulsifier, (2) type B emulsions prepared by adding clay to the external phase, and (3) type C emulsions containing no externally added emulsifier.

Standard testing procedures were used to measure the viscosity and filtration properties of the emulsions studied. Interfacial tension measurements were made using a technique described in the literature. The degree of stability for …

Use Of Light-Weight Steel Strapping As External Reinforcing To Concrete Beams, John O. Buchanan Jan 1961

Use Of Light-Weight Steel Strapping As External Reinforcing To Concrete Beams, John O. Buchanan

Masters Theses

"As a result of some recent failures in reinforced concrete construction throughout the United States, a study was made by several national authorities to find some remedial measures of strengthening existing structures without rebuilding. A system was developed, using high strength steel bands applied externally to beams, to act as stirrups, which has been highly successful. It not only greatly increased the strength of beams already in place but was used to repair members which had already failed.

The application of these bands was made under very exact specifications, using closely controlled procedures, with many physical refinements, in order to …

A Systematic Study Of Experimental Parameters In A Cloud Chamber Search For Subionizers, Zin Aung Jan 1961

A Systematic Study Of Experimental Parameters In A Cloud Chamber Search For Subionizers, Zin Aung

Masters Theses

"Since there is no theoretical basis for the quantization of electric charge, it is reasonable to consider the possible existence of particles with charges much less than the electronic charge ‘e’. Such particles, if they exist, are expected to ionize more lightly than the electron. Similar remarks hold true for particles with electric dipole moments, and relativistic monopoles with strengths much less than ’e’ electrostatic units. These particles have been termed subionizers.

The selection of apparatus for a subionizer search has been discussed. The desired conditions for such a search using a low background, long sensitive time Wilson cloud chamber …

Temperature Distribution In An Infinite Plate As A Function Of The Input Heat Flux, George Franklin Wright Jan 1961

Temperature Distribution In An Infinite Plate As A Function Of The Input Heat Flux, George Franklin Wright

Masters Theses

"It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate the effects of a variable input heat flux impinging equally on both sides, on the temperature distribution within an infinite plate. An infinite plate may be defined as one in which the dimensions are infinite in two directions and finite in thickness. For practical purposes such a plate could be thought of as one in which the thickness was small enough, compared to the other two dimensions, so that a temperature gradient exists only normal to the surfaces of the plate. This assumption will be made to establish one-dimensional heat flow …

A Heterocyclic Alkyd Resin, Bhailalbhai M. Patel Jan 1961

A Heterocyclic Alkyd Resin, Bhailalbhai M. Patel

Masters Theses

" 'Alkyd’ is a word coined by Kienle in 1927 to designate a class of synthetic resins which include the complexes resulting from the reaction of polyhydric alcohols and resinifying carboxylic organic aromatic acids or their anhydrides. The word in a broad sense is generally considered to apply to many modifications of these resins - drying, semi-drying and non-drying oil-modified alkyds. It was derived from the words alcohol and acid by combining “al” and “cid” and for euphony changing the ”cid” to “kyd” – al(cid)kyd.

Compounds having rings composed solely of carbon atoms are called homocyclic compounds or carbocyclic compounds. …

A Method Of Estimating Groundwater Influx Into A Vertical Mine Shaft, Morris T. Worley Jan 1961

A Method Of Estimating Groundwater Influx Into A Vertical Mine Shaft, Morris T. Worley

Masters Theses

"Prediction of groundwater influx into mine openings is one of the more important pre-development problems encountered in mining. A satisfactory method of estimation would provide the information necessary for a mining company to dewater prior to shaft sinking, pre-grout the shaft area, or plan pumping schemes to handle the expected flow.

A standardized field method of estimating groundwater supply from pumping test data was developed by O. V. Theis and others. In the present research problem, the estimation procedure has been simplified by the use of nomograms. Certain modifications in the estimate must be made when a pumping well is …

A Dissolution Rate Study Of Beryllium In Hydrofluoric Acid, Donald Lee Mathis Jan 1961

A Dissolution Rate Study Of Beryllium In Hydrofluoric Acid, Donald Lee Mathis

Masters Theses

"Beryllium was shown to react stoichiometrically with HF, HCl, and H2SO4 acids in accordance with a plus two valence. These reactions were investigated by the hydrogen evolution method.

Dissolution rates were determined in five concentrations, 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.50, and 0,75 N, of HF acid at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50°C, This was accomplished by the hydrogen evolution method and the results were based on the tested stoichiometry. Beryllium has a high dissolution rate in HF acid, which approximates the following under similar conditions: 10 times Al, 4 times Ti, and 1.5 times Zr. A kinetic …

A Study Of The Concrete Making Properties Of Idealite Lightweight Expanded Shale Aggregate, John J. Ahlskog Jan 1961

A Study Of The Concrete Making Properties Of Idealite Lightweight Expanded Shale Aggregate, John J. Ahlskog

Civil Engineering ETDs

Among the many commercially produced lightweight aggregates, Idealite seems to exhibit many desirable qualities. According to the available literature, the expanded shale group of lightweight aggregates are capable of producing concrete with excellent structural characteristics, and one researcher found that expanded shale aggregate produced in rotary kilns resulted in the lowest weight aggregates of the ten groups that he studied.1 While having low creep and shrinkage values, Idealite has been found to give strengths equal to or better than that of conventional sand and gravel concretes.

Idealite concretes are also reported to have excellent workability properties.^

Evaluation Of Protective Paint Films On Steel By X-Ray Diffraction Techniques, Donald Charles Knobeloch Jan 1961

Evaluation Of Protective Paint Films On Steel By X-Ray Diffraction Techniques, Donald Charles Knobeloch

Masters Theses

"Paints and related organic materials provide the most widely used means of protecting metals against corrosion. While corrosion measurements are based on a full range of quantitative methods in physical and analytical chemistry, the basic problem of evaluation work in the field of paint chemistry has been characterized by empirical testing procedures. Field tests are still of major importance and secondly, the relative value of paints may be predicted through exacting laboratory tests. However, the results of accelerated exposure tests have never successfully been correlated with service experience despite the efforts of many laboratories over a period of 35 years …

Discussion Of The Kentucky Criteria For Design Of Flexible Pavement Thicknesses, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory Jan 1961

Discussion Of The Kentucky Criteria For Design Of Flexible Pavement Thicknesses, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Department of Highways, in 1946, sought a more systematic criteria and basis for designing the thickness of bituminous concrete pavements. The Research Division was authorized to pursue this work and to develop the criterion. These efforts were embodied in a report (1) to the Department, which offered a system of design based upon CBR's and EWL's. EWL's were computed originally for a 10-year period but this practice was revised in 1954 to encompass 20-year traffic (more realistic with respect to average road life). Then, in 1957, the Department requested a re-evaluation of the criteria from the standpoint of …

Hiding Power Of White Pigments : Theory And Measurement, Parker Bovaird Mitton, Lawrence Vejnoska Dec 1960

Hiding Power Of White Pigments : Theory And Measurement, Parker Bovaird Mitton, Lawrence Vejnoska

Theses

Optical properties of pigmented films such as hiding power, scattering coefficient, and absorption coefficient were measured at three bands of wavelength of light (blue, green, red) for ten white pigments at seven pigment concentrations in a paint. These pigments range from the highest index of refraction (rutile) to the very low index of an extender pigment (CaC031); they range from a fine particle size (average 0.2 microns) to a relatively coarse size (average 2.2 microns).

Among the findings presented below the first two confirm the general observations of pigment behavior found by others; the rest of the findings are new. …

A Study Of A Plane Dislocation Problem, Daniel D. Kana Dec 1960

A Study Of A Plane Dislocation Problem, Daniel D. Kana

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This paper treats a more complete solution to the logarithmic spiral problem. Some changes in the basic dislocation theory are first accomplished to generalize the form of functions involved. The resulting equations are then applied to the logarithmic spiral dislocation at a hole in a large plate. A complete solution of pertinent stresses is obtained. Data are calculated to obtain the required dislocation relation along the logarithmic spiral cut, circumferential stress at the hole, and maximum shear stress along the dislocation cut.
