Vaporization Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley Apr 1967

Vaporization Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mixtures may be evaporated from one interface of a Non wettable porous membrane with diffusion through the vapor-filled pores and condensation at the other interface of the membrane, by a sufficiently higher temperature on the mixture side maintained by a heat supply to the mixture and heat removal from the condensate equal to the latent heat transferred with vapor plus heat transferred by conduction. This permits essentially infinite-stage flash evaporation at constant liquid pressures, either with diffusion through Non condensable gases in the pores, or with vapor flow at a lower pressure than liquid pressures, but with liquids excluded from …

A Compressive Force Transducer For Use On Rocket Sleds., Robert Merrill Workhoven Mar 1967

A Compressive Force Transducer For Use On Rocket Sleds., Robert Merrill Workhoven

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

In the field of research and development and the growing area of environmental testing a good method of measuring compressive forces, often under the most adverse field conditions, has been sought many times over. Several methods, both direct and indirect, have been used to attempt to define such compressive loads. Some are universally successful, but often a method has to be developed for each individual job.

A common problem among existing force transducers is their delicacy and mortality rate under field conditions. Some are complex and costly, and repeated replacement of damaged units is quite undesirable. Many transducers that are …

Energy Transfer And Electron Conduction In The Fluid Transpiration Arc Column, Pin-Seng Tschang Feb 1967

Energy Transfer And Electron Conduction In The Fluid Transpiration Arc Column, Pin-Seng Tschang

Dissertations

The energy relaxation and electrical conductivity of an electron gas in one atmosphere argon arc discharge has been examined theoretically and observed quantitatively in an experimental arrangement. The plasma column utilized for study is the type generated in a fluid transpiration arc equipment in which the argon working fluid is injected through a porous graphite anode. The rate of forced convection is such as to insure significant electron-heavy particle nonequilibrium in the sample volume of interest. A simple model of a developing arc column with internal heat generation indicates that, with typical rates of argon injection realized in practice, the …

Unit Weights Of Paving Materials, For Estimating Quantities, James H. Havens Feb 1967

Unit Weights Of Paving Materials, For Estimating Quantities, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Pursuant to our assignment, continuation issuing from the meeting of March 29, 1967, with Messers Brunnhoeffer, Mathis, et al, the Research Division staff performed specific-gravity tests on an ensemble of gravel samples furnished by Mr. Mays and made further evaluations of those and other data available -- that is, for the purpose of deriving the best or most judicious unit weights -- with a minimum of areal and mineralogical differentiation. Because of previously recognized variances in pavement densities, we elected to proceed on a theoretical basis. On the basis of assumed volume constants, it was possible to calculate theoretical unit …

Economic Impacts Of The Highway Beautification Act In Kentucky, Vincent W. Mcgurl

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Highway Beautification Act of 1965, Public Law 89-285, has as one of its main purposes "the control of outdoor advertising along interstate and all Federally aided primary highways "in order to protect "the public investment in such highways, to promote the safety and recreational value of public travel and "to preserve natural beauty." The Secretary of Commerce, in cooperation with the state highway departments, was authorized to make a comprehensive study of the economic impact of such legislation on affected individuals and commercial and industrial enterprises.

Carburizing Of Steel Using "Cracked" Methane, Robert Alvin Hesse Jan 1967

Carburizing Of Steel Using "Cracked" Methane, Robert Alvin Hesse

Theses

An attempt was made to carburize steel using cracked methane, industrial terminology for methane burned in air over a catalyst to give carbon monoxide and hydrogen, as the carburizing agent. Initial tests in a laboratory scale furnace using steel in chip form showed that, the feasibility of this method was excellent. These tests also indicated that a good method of control of the carburizing would be by a system that could measure the dew point of the gases introduced into the furnace. The next step was to apply the method of carburizing to small production size lots of bearing components. …

Melt Rheological Properties Of A Filled Polyethylene, George Lewis Levy Jan 1967

Melt Rheological Properties Of A Filled Polyethylene, George Lewis Levy

Theses

A procedure was developed to convert shear stress at various melt temperatures into a computed shear stress at a constant temperature in an isothermal system.

The isothermal shear stress was first analyzed at an equilibrium condition before time induced stress reduction for

1) the temperature dependency of shear stress

2) non-newtonian flow behavior

3) a relationship between the independent variables of shear rate, filler concentration and temperature, and shear stress.

A statistical analysis was performed on the data to find an empirical relationship between shear stress and the independent variables, at any time, under stress, for unfilled and filled high …

The Effects Of Solar Magnetic Activity On Electric Power Systems, John C. Slothower, Vernon D. Albertson Jan 1967

The Effects Of Solar Magnetic Activity On Electric Power Systems, John C. Slothower, Vernon D. Albertson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Disturbances an large electric power transmission systems have been attributed to magnetic storms following solar flares. It can be shown that these magnetic disturbances are of the proper nature and magnitude to produce the documented effects on these electric systems. It is anticipated that these effects may become more serious with the greater and greater geographical spread of interconnected systems. More research and information on causal relationships is needed.

Relationships Among The Metallurgical Condition, Hardness, And The Electrical Conductivity Of Aluminum Alloys, Richard A. Mueller Jan 1967

Relationships Among The Metallurgical Condition, Hardness, And The Electrical Conductivity Of Aluminum Alloys, Richard A. Mueller

Masters Theses

"Electrical conductivity measurements (eddy current determined) combined with indentation hardness measurements are now being used throughout the aerospace industry for nondestructive evaluation of the metallurgical condition of commercial precipitation hardenable aluminum alloys. The review of literature and experiments with two aluminum alloys, 7178 and a 5% Zn-Al binary, have shown that skilled interpretation of hardness-conductivity data depends not only upon a qualitative understanding of the modern wave mechanical theories of electron conduction, but also upon some knowledge of the precipitation reaction kinetics. In particular, the effects of "quenched-in" vacancies and retrogression upon the reaction kinetics must be considered. Studies of …

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin Jan 1967

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Viscosity-concentration results in the moderately concentrated range for four samples of polyisobutylene (molecular weights of 1.3 x 104 to 1.0 x 106) in cyclohexane (concentrations up to 4.7 g./dl.) and in benzene (concentrations up to 7.0 g./dl.) at 24°C. (a theta solvent) showed molecular weight and goodness of solvent dependencies similar to those reported earlier for three other polymers. For polyisobutylene, polystyrene, and a copolymer of styrene and methyl methaerylate in good solvents, viscosity-concentration data plotted as ηsp. C[η] vs. k′[η]C fit a single curve. The linear region of this curve suggests that the Huggins equation is useful to C[η] …

A Determination Of The Rate Of Evaporation Of Zinc At Atmospheric Pressure., Yu Ming Su Jan 1967

A Determination Of The Rate Of Evaporation Of Zinc At Atmospheric Pressure., Yu Ming Su

Masters Theses

"Measurements of evaporation rates of zinc in three different residual gases, e.g., argon, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen at one atmosphere pressure, were made. It was found that the rate of evaporation of zinc in one atmosphere of argon was almost the same as that in carbon monoxide, while the rate in hydrogen was almost twice the rate in argon or carbon monoxide. Measurements of evaporation rate of zinc in one atmosphere of argon-oxygen mixtures were also made. The evaporation rate was considerably reduced because the formation of the oxide film retards the zinc vapor escaping from the evaporating surface"--Abstract, page …

Research Relating To State Highway Laws, James H. Havens Jan 1967

Research Relating To State Highway Laws, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Department's study began late in 1962 and was undertaken as a review and analysis of the main body of highway law; but, of course, any subsequential objectives--stated or implied-remained contingent upon and would become a natural consequence of the first-mentioned type of inquiry and the improbablity of discovery. Undoubtedly, the Department was influenced by and was under inducement of the Bureau of Public Roads in this undertaking, The review-and-analysis phase was accomplished, in part, by the School of Law, University of Louisville, acting under contract (CH119 36, dated November 15, 1962) which was subsequently dissolved (9-30-63); a draft report …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of cadmium has been studied in aqueous solutions containing Cl−, Br−, I−, Ac−, SO4=, and NO3− ions. The normal valence (+2) was found in all solutions with the exception of NO3−. The apparent valence (calculated) of cadmium ions in nitrate solutions varied from 1.2 to 2.0 and was found to be a function of NO3− concentration, current density, and temperature. An anodic dissolution mechanism has been proposed involving local corrosion and disintegration of the anode which is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. Rectangular Cutthroat Flow Measuring Flumes, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt Jan 1967

Rectangular Cutthroat Flow Measuring Flumes, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt

Reports

Introduction: Procedures and methods for more accurate measurement and improved management of water are continually being sought to make better use of our water resources. Of all the devices and structures developed for measuring water, measuring flumes are among the most widely accepted and used. The most common measuring flume is the Parshall flume developed by Ralph Parshall at Colorado State University. Common to most flumes is the basic geometry consisting of a converging inlet section, a throat, and a diverging outlet section. Occasionally, the diverging outlet section is removed under free flow conditions, and the water is allowed to …

Feasibility Study Of A Capacitance-Type Electronic Sediment-Sensing Device, C. Earl Israelsen, Duane G. Chadwick Jan 1967

Feasibility Study Of A Capacitance-Type Electronic Sediment-Sensing Device, C. Earl Israelsen, Duane G. Chadwick

Reports

Difficulties caused by sediment carried in natural streams have existed since earliest times. Although instruments and techniques for measuring stream discharge have existed for many years, only recently have attempts been made to measure sediment carried by the streams. The earliest observations of sediment discharge in the United States were made by Captain Talcott in the Mississippi River in 1838 (1). More or less continuous samples of sediment from the Rio Grande have been collected by the United States Geological Survey since 1879, and from the Colorado River Basin since 1925. Studies of sediment transport are seriously hampered by the …

Highway Construction In Windblown Silts Of Western Kentucky, Robert C. Deen Jan 1967

Highway Construction In Windblown Silts Of Western Kentucky, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

It has been shown that engineering experience and performance histories of earthwork structures and foundations in distinctive physiographic regions provide valuable insights applicable to the planning and construction of future projects. Geologic information further categorizes earth materials on the basis of parent material and geologic processes which modify the rock and soil masses. A knowledge of the resulting topographic expression or landforms and reference to geologic and soils information contained in surveys, reports, and maps is particularly useful in the early stages of planning and site selection. When sufficient information is available, regional units may be recognized for the purpose …

A study was conducted to evaluate the theoretical and practical aspects of using an automobile as a testing device for measurement of pavement slipperiness. Every parameter and significant event in the excursion history of a skidding automobile was measured and recorded. The resultant skid-resistance values, twenty-five in all, were compared and correlated. As a result of the study, the measurement of time in the velocity increment between 30 mph to 20 mph was selected as an interim standard test. A number of experiments were also conducted to aid in the interpretation of test results and to establish control tolerances for …

Stresses In A Thick Spherical Shell, David Wayne Moore Jan 1967

Stresses In A Thick Spherical Shell, David Wayne Moore

Masters Theses

"This thesis reports a method to evaluate the stresses in a segment of a thick spherical shell. In the numerical examples loads due to thermal expansion as the shell is constrained at the free edge and a dead load acting vertically downward were considered for a shell assumed pinned but free to rotate and for a shell assumed completely fixed at the edge. A concrete shell was specifically studied but the method would also apply to a shell of any homogeneous, isotropic material"--Abstract, page i.

Small-Signal Impedance Of A Junction Diode At High Injection Levels, John E. Lundy Jan 1967

Small-Signal Impedance Of A Junction Diode At High Injection Levels, John E. Lundy

Masters Theses

"A mathematical expression for the driving point impedance of a junction diode at high injection levels is developed. To evaluate the impedance versus frequency characteristic of a diode, it is necessary to know the minority carrier lifetime as a function of injection level and doping density in the base (lightly doped) region, the junction area, and the base width. The interesting characteristic of the diode impedance at high injection levels is the inductive reactance displayed by the diode.

The expression is developed by solving the differential equation for charge flow in the base region of a diode assuming space-charge neutrality …
