The Dynamic Behavior Of Steel Frame And Truss Buildings, Dixon Rea, Jack G. Bouwkamp, R. W. Clough Apr 1968

The Dynamic Behavior Of Steel Frame And Truss Buildings, Dixon Rea, Jack G. Bouwkamp, R. W. Clough

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

This report describes experimental and analytical studies of the dynamic behavior of the East Building of the University of California's new Medical Center at San Francisco, California. It also describes experimental tests conducted on the East Building's mechanical service tower and on an adjacent elevator tower. Experimental tests on the East Building were conducted in the summers of 1964 and 1965. Vibrations were produced by eccentric-masstype vibration generators. Frequency responses, time responses, and mode shapes were observed. In the summer 1964 tests, the first mode east-west had 2% of critical damping and the first mode north-south had 1.8%; the values …

An Evaluation Of Temperature Distribution Within Asphalt Pavements And Its Relationship To Pavement Deflection, Herbert F. Southgate Apr 1968

An Evaluation Of Temperature Distribution Within Asphalt Pavements And Its Relationship To Pavement Deflection, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The attached report presents significant progress and achievements in the area of asphalt pavement design. Benkelman beam deflections were used extensively in conjunction with our 1958 study of asphalt pavement performance; apparent relationships between 18–kip deflections and pavement structures were evident then although scatter in the data was thought to be necessarily admissible. During the spring and summer of 1966, another extensive series of pavements, built since 1958, were evaluated from the standpoint of performance and deflection. It seemed compelling at that time to adjust all deflections to some common reference temperature and so the surface temperature of the pavement …

The Crab Orchard And Osgood Formations: The Case For Slope Instability, Robert C. Deen Apr 1968

The Crab Orchard And Osgood Formations: The Case For Slope Instability, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

For the past few years, the Division of Research, as a part of its continuing study of the occurrence of landslides in Kentucky, has reviewed and studied several sites in order to identify and delineate the geologic and soil formations which might be involved in the unstable earth masses. After a study of a number of landslides, it became evident that one particular material was highly susceptible to the development of landslides. This material, in Eastern Kentucky, is known as the Crab Orchard Formation and was deposited during the middle Silurian age. The Crab Orchard Formation, a deposit some 50 …

Deformation And Energy Absorption Capacity Of Steel Structures In The Inelastic Range, Theodore V. Galambos Mar 1968

Deformation And Energy Absorption Capacity Of Steel Structures In The Inelastic Range, Theodore V. Galambos

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

This report summarizes the status of knowledge on the inelastic deformability of steel members and frames. It demonstrates that the inelastic response of planar beams, beamcolumns, connections and frames is well understood and can be adequately, though conservatively, predicted by theory provided the loading is static, proportional and monotonic, and adequate provisions are made to inhibit premature local and lateral-torsional instability. The report reviews the available theoretical work, and examines the experimental evidence. It shows that the inelastic rotation capacity, which defines also the "ductility factor" and the inelastic energy absorption capacity, is both predictable and large enough to meet …

Transient Pulse Transmission Using Impedance Loaded Cyclindrical Antennas, David E. Merewether Mar 1968

Transient Pulse Transmission Using Impedance Loaded Cyclindrical Antennas, David E. Merewether

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Two aspects of the problem of pulse transmission using impedance loaded cylindrical antennas have been considered. First, an approximate solution is obtained for the current distribution on a thin cylindrical antenna driven at an arbitrary point along its length. This solution may be applied to an antenna of any length, and its simplicity makes the current distribution rapidly computable. This solution is ideal for the prediction of the transient electromagnetic field radiated when an arbitrary voltage transient is impressed across the input terminals of a long, thin, cylindrical antenna loaded with lumped impedances. Second, an antenna synthesis procedure was evolved. …

A High Current Density Pulse-Mode Proton Source: Preliminary Study, Warren D. Smith Feb 1968

A High Current Density Pulse-Mode Proton Source: Preliminary Study, Warren D. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A neutron source which produces high density pulses is useful, for example, in the simulation of an atomic blast or in neutron activation chemical analysis. Rather than forming pulses by deflecting the deuteron beam emitted from a continuous source of deuterons onto and off of a tritium target, it was decided to investigate the possibility of transient deuteron production. Proton sources were studied in place of deuteron sources because of the availability of hydrogen gas for experimentation. An experimental system was set up in which transient electrical discharges through hydrogen could take place. It was hoped that discharges could be …

A Three-Component Force Transducer For Monorail Rocket Sleds, Vincent Warren Gorman Feb 1968

A Three-Component Force Transducer For Monorail Rocket Sleds, Vincent Warren Gorman

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A three-component force transducer which permits measurement of the vertical force, the cross-track force, and the roll moment about an axis parallel to the track was developed for use on monorail rocket sleds. For this force system it was found that the maximum allowable load for both the vertical and cross-track components was approximately 28,000 pounds, and the maximum allowable roll moment was approximately 45,500 inch-pounds. The transducer, mounted between the slipper and sled, uses strain gages as component sensing elements. The strain gage bridges were statically calibrated for each component of load the transducer was designed to measure. In …

The Effect Of Transient Ionizing Radiation Upon Schottky Barrier Diodes, Robert H. Schnurr Feb 1968

The Effect Of Transient Ionizing Radiation Upon Schottky Barrier Diodes, Robert H. Schnurr

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The theory of operation of the Schottky barrier diode was reviewed. The complications caused by a more accurate space charge formulation were discussed. Consideration of image effects, tunneling, interfacial dielectric layers, surface states, and minority carrier current was also included.

The interaction of ionizing radiation with semiconducting materials was reviewed. The behavior of a Schottky barrier diode in an ionizing radiation environment was considered. The resultant model for the Schottky barrier diode is analogous to a p-n diode with one side having a very high dopant concentration.

Tests were performed upon GaAs and silicon Schottky barrier diodes, using a 2 …

Analysis Of Traffic Loads On Bridges, Robert L. Lynch Feb 1968

Analysis Of Traffic Loads On Bridges, Robert L. Lynch

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report contains information concerning:

  1. The statistical determination of frequencies of critical axle loadings on highway bridges and
  2. The adaptability and adaptability of historical loadometer and classification data in Kentucky to the recently adopted AASHO design criteria for evaluating the fatigue history of existing bridges.

The analysis of the fatigue history of a bridge consists of evaluating the distribution of instantaneous axle loadings over the applicable period. Because of the urgency, only historical records currently available were used as source data. This report is therefore divided into two sections: 1) a summary of quantitative results based on available data, and …

Construction And Interim Performance Report Of Experimental Salt (Nacl) Stabilization Of Plant-Mixed, Dense Graded Aggregate, Robert L. Florence Feb 1968

Construction And Interim Performance Report Of Experimental Salt (Nacl) Stabilization Of Plant-Mixed, Dense Graded Aggregate, Robert L. Florence

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

For some time the Department has been interested in building-up and retaining thicknesses of granular base course on rural roads through the use of various stabilizing additives and(or) the use of light asphalt seals or surfacings (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). These efforts more or less recognize that the "stage construction" concept is frustrated by weather and traffic erosion of unbound and exposed granular base material. Thus, the motive in experimenting with and in utilizing these treatments is to find economical and effective means by which a granular base can be built and retained until such time that a …

Isotope Effect Of Interstitial Diffusion Of Carbon In A Dilute Fe-Si Alloy, Edward T. Yen Jan 1968

Isotope Effect Of Interstitial Diffusion Of Carbon In A Dilute Fe-Si Alloy, Edward T. Yen

Masters Theses

"The isotope effect of carbon interstitial diffusion in a Fe-2.75at%Si alloy has been measured at -3.10°C using the disaccommodation technique. The disaccommodation has been analyzed in terms of two relaxation processes which are discussed on the basis of the reorientation mechanism of carbon interstitials at Fe-Fe sites and Fe-Si sites respectively. The ratios of the relaxation times [tau]₁₃/[tau]₁₂ are 1.0382 for the former and 1.0072 for the latter relaxation process. This result is discussed on the basis of many-body reaction rate theory"--Abstract, page ii.

Zener Disaccommodation In Dilute F.C.C. Co-Ti Alloys, H. B. Aaron, M. (Manfred) Wuttig, H. K. Birnbaum

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The magnetic Dis accommodation, i.e., the time dependence of the low field magnetic permeability, was investigated in cobalt base alloys containing 0-5.1 at.% (0-4.2 wt.%) titanium in the temperature range 400-700°C. A strong temperature dependence of the Dis accommodation observed in the range 430-530°C could be accounted for predominantly by a single first order relaxation process. Analyzing the data in terms of (a) a single exponential relaxation, (b) a lognormal distribution of relaxation times, and (c) a sum of exponential relaxations, it was shown that the relaxation strength varies as the square of the titanium concentration and that the relaxation …

Waveform Distortion Caused By A Plasma Sheath, James R. Carl Jan 1968

Waveform Distortion Caused By A Plasma Sheath, James R. Carl

Masters Theses

"A short burst of electromagnetic energy that propagates into and through a plasma medium can react with the plasma medium in several different ways depending on both the characteristics of the plasma and of the pulse. This thesis derives approximations for the plasma transfer function at low pressure (high altitude) and at high pressure (low altitude). The mechanisms that can change the shape of a waveform, in general, are dispersion and breakdown. dispersive distortion at low altitude is shown to exist for electron concentrations well above the resonant concentration for plasma sheaths that are thin compared to one wavelength. Several …

Influence Of Continuous Precipitation Upon The Growth Kinetics Of The Cellular Reaction In An Al-Ag Alloy, H. I. Aaronson, J. B. Clark Jan 1968

Influence Of Continuous Precipitation Upon The Growth Kinetics Of The Cellular Reaction In An Al-Ag Alloy, H. I. Aaronson, J. B. Clark

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The influence of the prior formation of a continuous precipitate upon the growth kinetics of the cellular reaction has been evaluated in an Al-17.9 wt. % Ag alloy. The continuous precipitate, in the form of intragranular plates of the γ′ transition phase, was shown to have reduced the upper bound of the driving force for the cellular reaction from the silver content of the untransformed alloy to that corresponding to the coherent solvus. When this reduction (≥ 98 %) is taken into account, the growth of cells is found to be controlled by cell boundary rather than by volume diffusion …

Age Hardening In A Mg-9 Wt.% Al Alloy, J. Beverley Clark Jan 1968

Age Hardening In A Mg-9 Wt.% Al Alloy, J. Beverley Clark

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The precipitation process and age hardening mechanism in a Mg-9 wt.% Al alloy were studied principally by transmission electron microscopy. This alloy age hardens by the general precipitation of plates of the equilibrium Mg17Al12 phase on the basal plane of the magnesium solid solution matrix. No evidence for the formation of either G.P. zones or a transition lattice of the Mg17Al12 precipitate was obtained. Cellular precipitation occurs competitively with the general precipitation at nearly all age hardening temperatures. In the solution treated condition, basal slip and {101̄2} twins are the principal deformation modes. Precipitation …

Application Of Stanford Watershed Model Concepts To Predict Flood Peaks For Small Drainage Areas, K. D. Clarke Jan 1968

Application Of Stanford Watershed Model Concepts To Predict Flood Peaks For Small Drainage Areas, K. D. Clarke

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report embodies two principal objectives: 1) updating rainfall intensity-duration curves for the hydraulic design of culverts and 2) adaptation of the Stanford Watershed Model concept to small drainage basins in Kentucky. The first objective is familiar -- the curves presently being used for the rational method of design were established from an earlier Department study made by E. M. West and W. H. Sammons, issued in July, 1955 (Report No. 2, "A Study of Runoff from Small Drainage Areas and the Openings in Attendant Drainage Structures"), and were based on rainfall records then available through 1951. The second objective …

Neutron Radiation Damage In Silicon Transistors, C. A. Goben, F. M. Smits, J. L. Wirth Jan 1968

Neutron Radiation Damage In Silicon Transistors, C. A. Goben, F. M. Smits, J. L. Wirth

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the investigation of base and collector current as a function of the emitter-to-base voltage, previous studies have shown that neutron-induced base current has components originating in the emitter space charge region as well as the neutral base region. This study shows that while the low injection level neutron-induced base current is dominated by the space charge component, the high injection behavior appears to be controlled by recombination in the neutral base region. Additional experiments performed in special tetrode transistors and van der Pauw-type samples indicate that changes in collector current are dominated by recombination in the neutral base, while …

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin Jan 1968

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin

Masters Theses

"Turbulent flow pressure drop measurements were made for solutions of aluminum dioleate (soap) in toluene at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 per cent. Tube diameters ranged in size from 0.01 to 2.0 inches. The results of these measurements differed from those observed in aqueous systems. Higher concentrations (at least 0.75 per cent) were required before drag reduction was observed. Although fresh solutions were somewhat sensitive to shearing, once a solution was over about two weeks old it showed little further mechanical degradation. Although in the toluene solutions, wall shear stresses were reached which were over an order of …

Signal Theoretic Characterization Of A Function Using Positive Exponential Basis Functions, James Julius Baremore Jan 1968

Signal Theoretic Characterization Of A Function Using Positive Exponential Basis Functions, James Julius Baremore

Doctoral Dissertations

"A signal theory characterization of a time function or signal is a representation of the function throughout a sample interval by an orthogonal basis function expansion. The characterization described here obtains the coefficients in the expansion by processing the input waveform, in real time, through a system of three terminal passive RC filters. The outputs of the filters are sampled periodically and the coefficients of the basis function expansion in that interval are related to these values. The basis functions result from an exponential transformation applied to the Legendre polynomials and are orthogonal in time over the sample interval. The …

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson Jan 1968

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations

"A High-Resolution Velocity Analysis (HRVA) has been developed for the determination of the root-mean-square subsurface-velocity energy spectrum from gated seismic data which has been normal-moveout corrected. All calculations are performed in the frequency-space or frequency-wavenumber domain; seismic gates are transformed from the time-space domain via the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. HRVA is not restricted to the investigation of apparent horizontal velocities which have associated stepout values that are integral multiples of the time sampling interval, as are the existing correlation techniques. The technique liberally exploits the inexistence of significant energy in the higher frequency harmonies of seismic data, resulting in …

Zap - A Computer Program To Predict Fission Product Concentrations As A Function Of Neutron Flux, Irradiation And Cooling Times, Bruce Earl Koopmann Jan 1968

Zap - A Computer Program To Predict Fission Product Concentrations As A Function Of Neutron Flux, Irradiation And Cooling Times, Bruce Earl Koopmann

Masters Theses

"The development of a computer code was undertaken to calculate the fission product nuclide concentration for spent fuel discharged from a nuclear reactor, as a function of irradiation time, cooling time, neutron flux, and element cross section. The necessary input data was prepared from the basic nuclear data for fission of uranium-235 and plutonium-239. Calculations are also made for total or selective element beta heating and total gamma flux according to user selected input groups. These calculations would be useful in fuel element shielding, cooling, shipping and processing studies"--Abstract, page ii.
