Behavior Of Steel Building Connections Subjected To Inelastic Strain Reversals, E. P. Popov, R. B. Pinkney

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Inelastic design of steel structures to withstand seismic forces requires a knowledge of the behavior of connections when subjected to cyclically reversed loading. This report contains a description of the design and testing of selected steel beam-to-column connection specimens. The motivations for the choice of connection types and overall geometry of the specimens are discussed, relating them to full-size prototypes used in actual building frames. The characteristics of the test installation are described, including means of loading, type of lateral support provided, etc. The programs of cycling of all tests are presented in terms of the deflection of the tip …

A Theoretical Model For Gas Separation In A Glow Discharge: Cataphoresis, Fredrick H. Shair, Donald S. Remer Nov 1968

A Theoretical Model For Gas Separation In A Glow Discharge: Cataphoresis, Fredrick H. Shair, Donald S. Remer

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A theoretical model for transient and steady-state cataphoresis is developed starting with the macroscopic equations of continuity. After a brief breakdown period, the impurity ions are assumed to be closely coupled with their neutral counterparts. The basic assumptions in the model are that after breakdown, the level of ionization of the impurity, and the axial electric field remain constant; it is demonstrated that under these conditions a system involving rapid ionization-recombination reactions is equivalent to a system in which no reaction occurs, but in which the "effective'' ion mobility is a product of the true ion mobility and the fraction …

Hot Mix Sand Surfacing, James H. Havens Nov 1968

Hot Mix Sand Surfacing, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Everyone has some compassion toward drivers who become victims of pavement slipperiness. The development of slipperiness on a road surface follows one of the laws of nature. Why not, then, employ other laws provided by nature to better advantage? For example, craftsmen use grinders, abrasives, buffers, etc. to achieve glossy surface finishes. Traffic does the same to our pavements. We might employ craftsmens' routine in reverse -- that is, roughen the surface. Better still, the principles that are apparent in a grinding wheel or whetstone may be used as a model for our pavement surface: a material of hard, abrasive …

Rational Analysis Of Kentucky Flexible Pavement Design Criterion, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Rational criteria for the structural design of pavements are emerging from classical theories equated to the observed behavior of real pavements. Pavement behavior is known to be affected by traffic, variations in soil support, and variations of component thicknesses. Considerable attention has been devoted to the mechanistic response of pavements to static and dynamic loads and to the development of theoretical design procedures, which rely, in part, on the computation of certain critical stresses, strains, and(or) deflections in the structure. A computer program (1) for the elastic analysis of multilayered pavement systems has enabled an extensive investigation of the effects …

Investigation Of Torsional-Flexural Buckling Of Thin-Walled Open Sections With Unequal End Eccentricities, Nuri Celebi, George Winter Oct 1968

Investigation Of Torsional-Flexural Buckling Of Thin-Walled Open Sections With Unequal End Eccentricities, Nuri Celebi, George Winter

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Compression members of thin walled open sections may buckle in the torsional-flexural mode at loads lower than the Euler buckling load, because of their low torsional rigidity. Doubly symmetric sections, loaded eccentrically in the plane of symmetry, buckle in the torsional-flexural mode when sufficient strength against flexural yielding is provided in the plane of loading. In singly symmetric sections, the shear center and centroid do not coincide. When such sections are loaded in the plane of symmetry, flexural buckling out of the plane of loading is possible only if the load acts at the shear center. Otherwise, torsional flexural …

Design Recommendations For Diaphragm-Braced Beams, Columns And Wall-Studs, T. V. S. R. Apparao, George Winter, S. J. Errera Oct 1968

Design Recommendations For Diaphragm-Braced Beams, Columns And Wall-Studs, T. V. S. R. Apparao, George Winter, S. J. Errera

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Light gage steel panels are often used as wall sheathing, roof decking or floor covering in steel framed buildings. These panels carry loads normal to their plane by virtue of their bending strength. Also, diaphragms formed by interconnecting such panels can resist shear deformation in their plane. Because of this shear resisting capacity, diaphragms can be very effective in bracing columns and beams of a steel frame against lateral buckling and, thus, increase the load carrying capacity of these members. For wall columns, such diaphragm bracing may be either directly attached or connected to girts which in turn are …

Proposed Experimental Design And Construction Features, Kentucky Department Of Highways

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: The experimental features proposed in connection with this project are three-fold: the first pertains to subsurface drainage of the pavement system, the second pertains to the feasibility of constructing full-depth, asphaltic concrete pavement sections directly on subgrade material -- rock or soil; the third pertains to the structural design and performance of pavement sections employing designated substitutions of bituminous concrete dense-graded aggregate base.

A Study Of Thermoacoustic Oscillations At Elevated Static Pressures, Michael Einar Berger Sep 1968

A Study Of Thermoacoustic Oscillations At Elevated Static Pressures, Michael Einar Berger

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effect of high static pressure on a closed thermoacoustic sound generator.

The theory for thermoacoustic oscillations is reviewed and analyzed for the case of elevated static pressure. Design equations for high internal pressure oscillators are developed from the principles of dimensional analysis, and a general design equation is proposed.

A closed double-end thermoacoustic oscillator was designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures and was used in the experimental investi9ation. Both air and helium were used as the working gases.

The results of both the theoretical and experimental investigations show that acoustic sound-pressure …

Economic Feasibility Of Increasing Southwestern Water Supplies Through The Reduction Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration, William C. Hughes Sep 1968

Economic Feasibility Of Increasing Southwestern Water Supplies Through The Reduction Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration, William C. Hughes

Civil Engineering ETDs

Each year a large portion of the southwestern water supply is lost through evaporation and plant transpiration. The growing water shortage in the Southwest makes vegetation manipulation and evaporation suppression to reduce these losses increasingly attractive. These losses can be successfully reduced, but it has been difficult to estimate how much additional water large scale vegetation management and evaporation control could produce. Three hydrologic models were developed for the Pecos River Basin in New Mexico to estimate the additional water which could be obtained by vegetation treatment in the forested headwater areas, the removal of salt cedar in the lower …
