The Detection Of Magnetic Fields Caused By Groundwater, Duane G. Chadwick, Larry Jensen
The Detection Of Magnetic Fields Caused By Groundwater, Duane G. Chadwick, Larry Jensen
Reports
Perturbations on the earth’s magnetic field may coincide with the existence of groundwater. Theoretical calculations are made showing how and to what extent this effect may exist. The suggestion is also made that water dowsers may get a dowsing reaction as a result of entering a change in magnetic gradient. Tests were conducted to determine the statistical significance of dowsing reactions obtained by separate individuals dowsing in a common test area. Approximately 150 people participated in the experiment over a period of one year. Chi-square tests showed considerable statistical significance. Virtually all people tested experienced dowsing reactions though most of …
A Computerized Method Of Precipitation Data Quality Control, Ronald H. Campbell
A Computerized Method Of Precipitation Data Quality Control, Ronald H. Campbell
Reports
A computerized data quality check and data edit program has been developed to aid in the processing of telemetered precipitation data. The logic considerations and program development are discussed and results are displayed. This effort has resulted in successful editing of large amounts of precipitation data gathered by automated remote data acquisition techniques. The application of this processing routine has resulted in reducing data editing costs to about three percent of that required to do the work manually.
Extending Utility Of Non-Urban Water Supplies, Jay M. Bagley
Extending Utility Of Non-Urban Water Supplies, Jay M. Bagley
Reports
Extending the utility of an existing water supply in any river basin suggests a management-planning approach under three general guiding principles: (1) minimize depletions wherever possible (thereby maintaining a greater manageable quantity with subsequent potential to satisfy more uses); (2) generally preserve, protect, and improve water quality (thereby retaining its itility for use by a wider variety of potential users); and (3) make carefully considered allocations (thereby assuring multiples duty, more optimal sequencing, and shifts in use to conform to current and projected soil preferences). There are many technological and managerial techniques that can be employed to implement these principles. …
Hydrologic Inventory Of The Great Salt Lake Desert Area, Gary L. Foote, Robert W. Hill, Daniel H. Hoggan
Hydrologic Inventory Of The Great Salt Lake Desert Area, Gary L. Foote, Robert W. Hill, Daniel H. Hoggan
Reports
The Great Salt Lake Desert, located in the southwest corner of the State of Utah"is a very dry region with sparse population and relatively small scattered areas of development. Since only a meager amount of hydrologic data has been collected and compiled for this relatively undeveloped area, the inventory presented herein is but a general appraisal of hydrologic conditions. Because of the small amount of development that has taken place and the general lack of hydrologic data, a water budget analysis is included for the Tooele Valley only.

Hybrid Computer Simulation Of The Accumulation And Melt Processes In A Snowpack, Keith O. Eggleston, Eugene K. Israelsen, J. Paul Riley
Reports
This study represents the first phase of an investigation to develop an operational simulation model of the point snowmelt process based on a time increment of one day or less. Mathematical relationships for various phenomena involved in the snowmelt process were proposed and tested. These relationships were combined into a model which is applicable to any geographic locations by determining appropriate constants for certain relationships. The model was synthesized on a hybrid computer and calibrated using field data from the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory. It was then tested with data from other well instrumented locations. Sensitivity tests were also conducted …

Design Of A Semi-Automatic Transmission, Yogendra Prahladray Buch
Design Of A Semi-Automatic Transmission, Yogendra Prahladray Buch
Masters Theses
"Design of a semi-automatic four-speed transmission for automotive engines with moderate horsepower is described. The basic configuration consists of main and countershafts and five pairs of constant-mesh gears. Engine torque is transmitted through an input gear pair to the countershaft, and finally to the output shaft through a selected output gear pair. Selection is accomplished by engaging one of five hydraulically operated clutches located on the countershaft. Engagement fixes the desired gear to the countershaft and engine torque is then transmitted to the mating gear, which is fixed to the output shaft. Fourth speed is obtained by coupling the input …
Free Vibrations Of Circular Cylindrical Shells, Sushil Kumar Sharma
Free Vibrations Of Circular Cylindrical Shells, Sushil Kumar Sharma
Masters Theses
"In this report bending theory of shells is used to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of circular cylindrical shells. The governing eighth-order system of differential equations has been put in a form which is especially suitable for numerical integration and application of different sets of homogeneous boundary conditions. The Holzer method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem. During numerical integration of the differential equations, the exponentially growing solutions are suppressed whenever they become larger than previously selected values. Numerical results are obtained for various shell geometry parameters and for three different sets of homogeneous boundary conditions. These …
The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch
The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch
Masters Theses
"Present comprehensive planning endeavors lack a consistent methodology which will produce realistic, useable results. The validity of this statement should be obvious after one has read Miller's "Evaluation of City and Region Planning Techniques." This paper contains a methodology, "The Integrated Planning Method," which will go a long way toward correcting this gross inadequacy that planners presently encounter in directing planning efforts. Two government developed planning and analysis procedures that, up until this time have been applied almost exclusively to hardware systems, have been combined into one integrated planning methodology that will provide not only meaningful and rigorous definition and …
Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell
Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell
Masters Theses
"It has become apparent in recent years that the United States Government's construction contract supervision and administration procedures are causing an increase in contractor claims and disputes and that the system itself is becoming prohibitively expensive. To deal with some of these problems, the Department of Defense is attempting to implement a new approach to construction inspection--Contractor Quality control. Under the Contractor Quality Control System the majority of the standard contract inspection and testing responsibilities are placed on the contractor, and the Government relinquishes its traditional step-by-step inspection and testing procedures and withdraws to a position of contract surveillance. The …

Shop Level Maintenance Of Inertial Platforms Without A Surveyed Site, Max E. Bott
Masters Theses
"The initial installation of a rotary tilt table for an aircraft inertial navigation system test facility includes accurately aligning the rotary tilt table to local level and true north coordinates. The survey techniques presently employed are an encumbrance during installation and complicate remote deployment. The objective of this thesis is to determine if an inertial platform or platforms can practically be used to replace the role of the survey techniques in the rotary tilt table alignment. The construction, capability and operation of a rotary tilt table are reviewed. The tests necessary to test and calibrate an inertial platform are outlined, …

The Effect Of Cathodic Protection On The Stress Corrosion Characteristics Of 300m Low Alloy Steel, John Pechonick
Masters Theses
"The objective of this investigation was to determine if stress corrosion failure of 300M steel is accelerated by the application of cathodic protection. Testing was conducted on notch tensile specimens that were coated with vacuum cadmium, electroplated cadmium, and vacuum aluminum. All specimens were stressed and placed in an aqueous sodium chloride environment. The failure times for the specimens were monitored and graphs were drawn which characterized the stress corrosion resistance of 300M steel and the cathodic protection systems. Fractography techniques were used to study the failure surfaces to determine the type of failure mechanism. The results of this thesis …

The Genesis Of Cellular Precipitation In Copper Rich Copper-Indium Alloys, Raymond Albert Fournelle
The Genesis Of Cellular Precipitation In Copper Rich Copper-Indium Alloys, Raymond Albert Fournelle
Doctoral Dissertations
"The morphology of cellular precipitation in a Cu-9.5at.%In alloy has been investigated by light and electron microscopy and x-ray and electron diffraction. Both cellular and general precipitation were observed to occur simultaneously in quenched and aged alloys while only cellular precipitation was observed to occur in isothermally aged alloys. Because of the presence of wide, vacancy depleted precipitate free zones in the vicinity of grain boundaries, general precipitation was observed to have no effect on the early development of cellular precipitation. Hence, the early development of cellular precipitation was found to be identical for both types of heat treatment. By …
Thermal Lattice Expansion Of Various Types Of Solids, Jayantkumar Shantilal Shah
Thermal Lattice Expansion Of Various Types Of Solids, Jayantkumar Shantilal Shah
Doctoral Dissertations
"Thermal lattice expansion studies of various types of solids were carried out in this investigation and were corelated to their crystallographic and various other properties. The advantages and limitations of various methods of studying thermal expansion are discussed in detail. A new design for a versatile low temperature camera to study expansion by an X-ray method is proposed. The thermal lattice expansion of silicon was negative below 119ºK. This behavior is discussed in terms of crystal structure and interatomic bonding. Diamond exhibits no anomalous thermal expansion. Lattice parameter data for many metals at low temperatures are reported for the first …
An Investigation Of The Radiation Polymerization Of Methyl Methacrylate-Kaolin Clay Composites, James Jackson Beeson
An Investigation Of The Radiation Polymerization Of Methyl Methacrylate-Kaolin Clay Composites, James Jackson Beeson
Doctoral Dissertations
"A kinetic and characterization study has been made on the effects of gamma-rays (Co⁶⁰) on the polymerization of a 50-50 weight mixture methyl methacrylate (MMA) kaolin clay system. The effect of dose rate (7.35 - 24.9 rads per second), temperature (25 to 75ºC) and total dose on the percentage conversion of monomer to polymer was studied. The rate of formation of polymer at 25ºC in the composite system was found to be faster when compared to a bulk MMA system at the same experimental conditions. This acceleration showed that the clay had a catalytic effect on the formation of polymer. …
An Age Hardening Study Of Magnesium-Thorium-Manganese Alloys, Kuldip Singh Chopra
An Age Hardening Study Of Magnesium-Thorium-Manganese Alloys, Kuldip Singh Chopra
Doctoral Dissertations
"The age hardening processes in Mg-3.5 wt.% Th-1.0 wt.% Mn and Mg-1.0 wt.% Th-1.0 wt.% Mn alloys have been studied by light and electron microscopy, and by electron and X-ray diffraction. At aging temperatures of 300ºC and below, G.P. zone formation rapidly hardens these alloys followed by the precipitation of disc shaped plates during averaging. During aging above 300ºC, no G.P. zones form and the disc shaped precipitate grows to very large sizes. The combined results of X-ray and electron diffraction indicate that the disc shaped precipitate has a Mg₃Cd (DO₁₉) type structure. The basal plane of the Mg₃Th discs …
Detection Of Delay Time And Filtering Using Sequency Domain Technique, Earl F. Richards
Detection Of Delay Time And Filtering Using Sequency Domain Technique, Earl F. Richards
Doctoral Dissertations
"A procedure is presented by which it is possible to detect a known signal of unknown delay in a noisy medium contaminated by noise. From the results the characteristics of a sequency digital filter which would be required to remove the noise contamination is indicated. The Walsh functions are discussed and the sequency domain, which is analogous to the continuous frequency domain, is used in the spectral analysis of signals. The binary nature of the Walsh functions and their ease of generation makes processing of signals easier than the Fourier analysis approach. The applications of fast forward and inverse Walsh …
Activation Volumes Of Carbon Diffusion In F.C.C. Iron-Nickel Alloys, James Raymond Keiser
Activation Volumes Of Carbon Diffusion In F.C.C. Iron-Nickel Alloys, James Raymond Keiser
Doctoral Dissertations
"The disaccommodation technique was used to determine the activation volume of carbon diffusion, ΔV, in six fcc iron-nickel alloys. Measurements were made at temperatures ranging from 68ºC to 90ºC and pressures up to six kilobars on samples having a nickel content between 31 and 63 at. %. A maximum activation volume of 3.9 cm³/mole was found at 34 at. % nickel. The compositional dependence of ΔV is satisfactorily reproduced by a magnetic energy continuum model in which it is assumed that the activation free energy of diffusion is essentially ferromagnetic in origin "--Abstract, page iii.
An Investigation Of Subsequent Yield Phenomena, Joseph George Hoeg
An Investigation Of Subsequent Yield Phenomena, Joseph George Hoeg
Doctoral Dissertations
"A method utilizing high pressure fluid environments is described whereby a three-dimensional subsequent yield surface was determined for 304 stainless steel. Cylindrical parent specimens of this material were prestrained in axial compression under fluid pressure and then small sub-specimens were sectioned from these parent specimens. Finite element techniques were used to optimize the parent specimen size so that a zone of uniform axial stress would result during the prestraining. Longitudinal strains in this zone were monitored during the prestraining and the sub-specimens were cut from this region in a manner that did not allow the machining to appreciably affect the …
On-Line Economic Optimization Of A Chemical Reactor, Jesse Daniel Bennett
On-Line Economic Optimization Of A Chemical Reactor, Jesse Daniel Bennett
Doctoral Dissertations
"An economic optimizing control system for a continuous flow stirred tank chemical reactor is designed, simulated, and installed on a pilot scale reactor. The control scheme utilizes a reaction and reactor model to predict on-line the economic optimum of a reactant concentration. In this manner the control system manipulates the reactant flow rate to maintain the optimum concentration during changes in reaction-reactor parameters with time. Typical parameter changes include the decay of reaction catalyst activity. The optimizing controller will function in conjunction with various operating policies including control to maintain a specified production rate"--Abstract, page ii.

"Study of the return on investment response surface of a characteristic chemical plant indicates unimodality in the valid region, but the optimum design condition with this response surface is strongly affected by the correlation used for the investment. The method used for the design of this type of chemical plant incorporates the use of a simulation routine for preliminary estimates"--Abstract, page ii.
Structure And Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, Edward Nashed Boulos
Structure And Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, Edward Nashed Boulos
Doctoral Dissertations
"Clear glasses form in the system Ag₂O-B₂O₃ up to about 35 mol.% (65 wt.%) Ag₂O. Infrared absorption, thermal expansion and density data indicated an analogy to the Na₂O-B₂O₃ system. Pentaborate-triborate group pairs appear to be formed upon the addition of Ag₂O to B₂O₃ up to 20 mol.% Ag₂O and diborate groups from 20 to 33 mol.% Ag₂O. This interpretation is supported by the comparison of the infrared absorption spectra of quenched and crystallized glasses. One crystallization product ,Ag₂O.4B₂O₃, has been identified previously. A new compound starts to appear at 28 mol.% Ag₂O. Silver is generally present as a network modifier …
Transient Hydraulic Simulation: Breached Earth Dams, D. L. Fread
Transient Hydraulic Simulation: Breached Earth Dams, D. L. Fread
Doctoral Dissertations
"A conceptual method to alleviate flood damages due to over-topping failures of small earthfill dams is the incorporation of a relatively thin erosion retarding layer within the dam. This paper investigates the reduction in the reservoir release due to the hypothetical erosion retarding layer. In addition, the paper provides a method for the determination of an optimal location of the layer so as to minimize the maximum possible reservoir release due to a gradually breached earth dam. The transient reservoir flow is simulated by a numerical model, based upon the solution of the one-dimensional St. Venant unsteady open-channel flow equations. …
X-Ray And Neutron Diffraction Study Of The Holmium-Iron System, Michael Fred Simmons
X-Ray And Neutron Diffraction Study Of The Holmium-Iron System, Michael Fred Simmons
Doctoral Dissertations
"Neutron diffraction and x-ray powder studies have been made of holmium-iron intermetallic compounds. The magnetic moments of Ho and Fe are in good agreement with measured spontaneous magnetization assuming a ferrimagnetic model with the Ho moments antiparallel to the Fe moments. The magnetic moments of the Fe atoms are found to be localized and thus independent of the rare earth content in the alloys. In contrast to HoCo₃, (00ℓ) type magnetic peaks in the neutron diffraction patterns are still prevalent at room temperature and gradually decrease as the Curie temperature is approached. This fact indicates that the easy direction of …
Mechanical Properties Of Low Carbon Martensite, Allen L. Affolter
Mechanical Properties Of Low Carbon Martensite, Allen L. Affolter
Masters Theses
"Steels of three different compositions were heat treated and tensile tested in order to determine their mechanical properties after heat treatment. All samples had near 0.20 per cent carbon and two manganese levels 0.90 per cent and 1.35 per cent. One group containing the higher manganese level also had small additions of columbium and vanadium. The specimens were too brittle in the as-quenched condition to be loaded to full strength. Maximum strength and ductility were found after short time tempering at low tempering temperatures -- 2 to 15 minutes at 200º to 300ºF. Higher strengths were found at the low …
Practical Application Of Digital Computer To Distribution Systems, Juan Vincente Saavedra
Practical Application Of Digital Computer To Distribution Systems, Juan Vincente Saavedra
Masters Theses
"Given a three phase ac power distribution system, a digital computer program is presented which determines a complete steady state solution for a given condition. The network data is processed by the computer into an admittance matrix, and these parameters are stored in a manner that enables the computer program to operate upon them as the coefficient of a simultaneous set of nonlinear equations. This set of equations are solved by the Gauss-Seidel Iterative Process improved by a modification of the relaxation method. Practical experience with the distribution system of the Davenport, Iowa, plant of the Aluminum Company of America …
The Artificial Sedimentation Of Soil, John Richard Wagner
The Artificial Sedimentation Of Soil, John Richard Wagner
Masters Theses
"Previous investigations concerned with artificially sedimented soils and a review of the literature on soil structure are summarized. These studies show that many of the physical properties of a soil depend upon its structure and that the structure of a sedimented soil depends principally upon the salt content of the pore water. In addition, artificially sedimented soils have been shown to have a "natural" soil structure. An apparatus was developed which will automatically sediment soils in water of controlled salt content. To determine whether or not the apparatus was able to sediment uniform and homogeneous soil samples, moisture content determinations, …
A Closed Form Method For Predicting The History Of Circular Orbit Altitude Decay Of A Near-Earth Satellite Including The Effect Of A Dynamic Atmosphere, John Copley Buchholtz
A Closed Form Method For Predicting The History Of Circular Orbit Altitude Decay Of A Near-Earth Satellite Including The Effect Of A Dynamic Atmosphere, John Copley Buchholtz
Masters Theses
"A closed form expression for the time to decay between two circular orbit altitudes is developed. The long-term dynamic variation of high altitude atmospheric density is included. The density is approximated as a ratio of two quadratics with the numerator being a function of the time-related exospheric temperature and the denominator being a function of altitude. The 11-year cyclic variation of exospheric temperature is then represented as a piecewise linear function of time. The analytic expression for circular orbit altitude decay rate is developed by describing the energy loss due to atmospheric drag. A point mass representation of the Earth's …
Intrinsic Viscosities Of Linear Polyethylene, Joseph Shing Chiang
Intrinsic Viscosities Of Linear Polyethylene, Joseph Shing Chiang
Masters Theses
"Intrinsic viscosity measurements were performed on linear polyethylene (Marlex 6009) in decalin at 135ºC and in diphenyl ether at 163.9ºC. Molecular weights ranging from 3x10³ to 35x10⁴ were studied. It was found that for linear polyethylene of molecular weight up to 35x10⁴, the tedious intrinsic viscosity measurement could be replaced by inherent viscosity measurement at a concentration of 0.1 grams per deciliter. The effect of shear on viscosities measured in decalin increased as the molecular weight of the sample increased. The shear rate effects on intrinsic viscosities were negligible. On the other hand, the shear rate effect on the Huggins' …
