A Model For Evaluating The Effect Of Energy Reductions On Industrial Production Facilities., Eugene Dale Manning

Masters Theses

"The Energy/Production Simulation Model (EPSM) was developed to determine the impact that energy reductions have on industrial production facilities. The total energy requirements for manufacturing activities are analyzed for their effects on important production, ii which involves accounting for energy shortages as the raw material flows through all manufacturing stages to finished product. The computer algorithm presented herein involves a feedback analysis from the viewpoint of the physical units of the plant or facility in question, and is designed to aid industrial managers in designing effective energy management programs"-- Abstract, p. ii

A Fluid Control System For The University Of Missouri--Rolla Nuclear Reactor, Billy Roger Mcpherson Jan 1977

A Fluid Control System For The University Of Missouri--Rolla Nuclear Reactor, Billy Roger Mcpherson

Masters Theses

"Solid control rods and their movement through a reactor core present problems inherent in any moving machinery. The problems of binding, wear, and noise have to be dealt with in the usage of a solid control rod system. Therefore, an alternate system that eliminates or minimizes these problems would lower maintenance costs, extend the lifetime of the control system, and produce safer operating conditions.

This thesis presents a control system that has no moving parts inside the reactor core. The system is based upon a neutron-absorbing fluid contained in hollow tubes in the reactor core. The fluid level is operated …

Classroom Analysis Of Various Plastics, Paul D. Harrington Dec 1976

Classroom Analysis Of Various Plastics, Paul D. Harrington

Graduate Research Papers

In the junior high plastics course this writer. teaches, the students display more interest in the manipulative activities of the laboratory than in the sit-down classroom activities. The results of this tend to be a once-over-lightly treatment of the technical aspects of plastics and more hands on craft type activities in the laboratory. To bring more balance to the program, an activity needs to be devised which will have more industrial relevance. Such an activity should allow the students a certain amount of freedom and still provide them with technical information and acquaint them with the properties of various plastics. …

Beam Modes In Complex Lenslike Media And Resonators, Lee W. Casperson Dec 1976

Beam Modes In Complex Lenslike Media And Resonators, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

General sets of higher-order beam modes are derived for light propagation in media having spatial variations of the gain or loss. The resulting expressions are also valid for propagation through conventional optical elements and graded transmission filters. The four basic mode sets obtained include off-axis Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian modes of both real and complex argument. A procedure is developed for finding the resonant modes of laser oscillators containing arbitrary complex lens elements, and the mode stability properties of lasers can be interpreted physically by means of these formulas.

Voltammograms were obtained using industrial, purified neutral leach solution (Cominco Ltd., Trail, BC) acidified to give a final concentration of 0.77 M Zn++ and 1 M H2SO4. The polarization curves were then evaluated and used as reference standards to compare with results obtained when various organic and inorganic additions were made. The deposit morphologies …

A Possible Explanation Of Concrete Pop-Outs, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen Dec 1976

A Possible Explanation Of Concrete Pop-Outs, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report summarizes several years of research relating to damage to concrete and aggregates undergoing freezing and thawing. Basic principles involving freezing and attendant pressures are considered. Application of these principles to the evaluation of concrete was accomplished in experiments on concrete having low and high air contents.

Freeze-thaw characteristics of saturated aggregates relative to physical properties such as porosity, absorption, and bulk specific gravity were studied by submerging individual particles in pre-chilled mercury. Pressures associated with pop-outs in concrete were monitored and are presented along with accompanying theoretical considerations.

Various expressions of wet-pavement accidents and pavement friction were related and analyzed. Averaging methods were used in developing trends and minimizing scatter. A moving average for progressively-ordered sets of ten test sections and test sections grouped by Skid Numbers and Peak Slip Numbers yielded more definite results. The expression of accident …

An Experimental Study Of Semi-Continuous Ph-Parametric Pumping With A Center Feed, John S. Dell'osso Oct 1976

An Experimental Study Of Semi-Continuous Ph-Parametric Pumping With A Center Feed, John S. Dell'osso

Theses

Parametric pumping represents a new development in separation science. It has attracted considerable attention both because of its novelty and because it permits continuous operation in small equipment with very high separation factors. The basic principle of parametric pumping is to utilize the coupling of periodic changes in equilibrium conditions caused by periodic changes in some intensive variables (temperature, pH, electric field, etc.), and periodic changes in flow direction to separate the components of fluid which flows past a solid adsorbent. Applications of parametric pumping involving the separation of valuable materials such as proteins would be very attractive and profitable …

Optimal Fuel Supply Control For Electrical Energy Systems -- A Real Time Computer Technique, J. Derald Morgan, Richard Thomas Smith Oct 1976

Optimal Fuel Supply Control For Electrical Energy Systems -- A Real Time Computer Technique, J. Derald Morgan, Richard Thomas Smith

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The techniques of linear-integer programming are applied to the problem of supplying coal to power plants. A heuristic technique for optimizing the supply of coal to power companies is created. The optimization minimizes the purchase, transportation, and demurrage costs of coal subject to power system operations, power plant demands, coal purchase supply, power plant coal handling operations, and transport options. A procedure for calculation and analysis of cost sensitivity of optimal solutions to input data perturbations is presented which utilizes the optimizing technique.

The nature of the constraint set developed allows for the inclusion of loading and unloading operations in …

Over One Billion Tons Of Coal In 1985: Can The Railroad Industry Handle It?, Larry C. Peppers Oct 1976

Over One Billion Tons Of Coal In 1985: Can The Railroad Industry Handle It?, Larry C. Peppers

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Any evaluation of our country's resource potential must carefully consider the transport network and the constraints which it places upon future energy development and growth. The federal government has a vague goal of energy independence (or, at least, less energy dependence), but it has not developed a coherent energy plan—a critical element of which is energy transport. The paper analyzes the uncertain coal outlook facing the rail industry, translates these coal scenarios into alternative financial projections for the rail sector, and clarifies the most urgent federal decisions needed in the energy-transport policy matrix. The rail industry is being asked to …
