Crack Propagation In Aluminum Sheets Reinforced With Boron-Epoxy, George Lawrence Roderick
Crack Propagation In Aluminum Sheets Reinforced With Boron-Epoxy, George Lawrence Roderick
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The literature has shown that crack propagation in cracked metal sheets can be significantly reduced by bonding an uncracked reinforcement to the metal sheet. However, cyclic debonding typically occurs over a localized area near the crack. Herein, an analysis was developed to predict both the crack growth and debond growth in a reinforced system. The analysis was based on the use of complex variable Green's functions for cracked, isotropic sheets and uncracked, orthotropic sheets to calculate inplane and interlaminar stresses, stress intensities and strain-energy-release rates. An iterative solution was developed that used the stress intensities and strain-energy-release rates to predict …

Relativistic Scattered-Wave Theory Ii. Normalization And Symmetrization, Cary Y. Yang
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Formalisms for normalization and symmetrization of one‐electron Dirac scattered‐wave wavefunctions are presented. The normalization integral consists of one‐dimensional radial integrals for the spherical regions and an analytic expression for the intersphere region. Symmetrization drastically reduces the size of the secular matrix to be solved. Examples for planar Pb2Se2 and tetrahedral Pd4 are discussed.
Atomic Hydrogen Storage Method And Apparatus, John A. Woollam
Atomic Hydrogen Storage Method And Apparatus, John A. Woollam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Atomic hydrogen, for use as a fuel or as an explosive, is stored in the presence of a strong magnetic field in exfoliated layered compounds such as molybdenum disulfide or an elemental layer material such as graphite. The compound is maintained at liquid helium temperatures and the atomic hydrogen is collected on the surfaces of the layered compound which are exposed during delamination (exfoliation). The strong magnetic field and the low temperature combine to prevent the atoms of hydrogen from recombining to form molecules.

Simulation Of External-Internal And Through Trips For Small Urban Areas, Jerry G. Pigman
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The objective of this study was to develop models which would simulate internal-external trips and external-external (through) trips. Regression analysis and cross-classification of data were tested in an attempt to predict the number of internal-external trips and the percentage of through trips. Regression analysis was used in the development of a through-trip distribution model. Grouping data for analysis created some problems; however, trial-and-error evaluation enabled selection of variables which produced reasonable results. Variables found to be most significant in the development of internal-external models were population and employment. For through-trip models, variables used were population, functional classification, AADT at the …

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The weld used by the steel deck erectors to anchor steel decking to structural steel framing is commonly known as "Puddle Weld". It is formed by arc-welding with stick electrodes to "melt" through the deck, resulting in puddle of molten steel durinlj the welding operation. Hence, the weld is commonly referred to in the trade as "Puddle Weld". Since the inception of this research projE:ct, this type of weld has been given a new technical name -the "Arc-Spot Feld" to reflect the actual welding process and the formation of the weld.

Electronic Fuel Injection Techniques For Hydrogen Fueled Internal Combustion Engines, Carl Arthur Maccarley
Electronic Fuel Injection Techniques For Hydrogen Fueled Internal Combustion Engines, Carl Arthur Maccarley
Electrical Engineering
Numerous studies have demonstrated the advantages of hydrogen as a fuel for Otto Cycle engines due to high thermal efficiency and low exhaust pollutant levels. Characteristic of hydrogen engine operation using pre-mixed intake charge formation is a problem of pre-ignition resulting in an intake manifold "backfire." Additional problems include high NO production when using certain equivalence ratios and power output degradation due to low fuel energy/volume density.
Techniques for direct and manifold fuel injection are discussed as means for overcoming these problems. Emphasis is placed on the need for total engine control, integrating control of fuel injection, ignition timing, intake …

Site Selection For Air Pollution Monitoring In The Vicinity Of Point Sources, John C. Brown
Site Selection For Air Pollution Monitoring In The Vicinity Of Point Sources, John C. Brown
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Ever since air pollution became a national concern in the 1950's, more and more emphasis has been placed on collection of representative air samples for many purposed, to include (1) evaluation of the degree to which national ambient air quality standards are being met and (2) to monitor maximum emission levels from point sources. Until recently efforts were directed toward qualitative methods of siting monitors for representative sampling. Since the dispersion of effluents is most complex, the quality of the data collected on the basis of judgment and, more or less, incremental siting about the source, has become suspect. Furthermore, …
