Disassembly Process Planning Using Petri Nets, Kendra E. Moore, Askiner Gungor, Surendra M. Gupta Oct 2010

Disassembly Process Planning Using Petri Nets, Kendra E. Moore, Askiner Gungor, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

We generate a disassembly PN (DPN) from a disassembly precedence matrix. The resulting DPN can be analyzed using the reachability tree method to generate all feasible disassembly process plans (DPPs), and cost functions can be used to determine the optimal DPP. Since generating the reachability tree is NP-complete, we develop a heuristic algorithm to limit the size of the reachability tree. The algorithm employs multihypothesis search to dynamically explore the v likeliest lowest cost branches of the tree, in order to identify near-optimal DPPs. The cost function incorporates tool changes, changes in direction movement, and individual part characteristics (e.g., hazardous). …

Determining Optimum And Suboptimum Disassembly Sequences With An Application To A Cell Phone, A.J.D. (Fred) Lambert, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

We study the disassembly process of a moderately complex consumer product (cell phone) consisting of 25 components. The investigation involves a heuristically solved disassembly line balancing problem and the determination of an appropriate disassembly sequence influenced by sequence-dependent costs, which is based on a novel combination of exact and heuristic algorithms. The issue of generating various suboptimum solutions to cope with multiple optimization criteria is also discussed.

Efficient Design And Effective Marketing Of A Reverse Supply Chain : A Fuzzy Logic Approach, Kishore K. Pochampally, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

A two-phase mathematical programming approach to efficiently design a reverse supply chain is proposed, as follows: in phase I, a fuzzy cost-benefit function is formulated to perform a multi-criteria economic analysis for selecting the most economical product to re-process, from a set of candidate used products; in phase II, an integer goal programming model that not only identifies potential recovery facilities but also leads to transportation of the right mix and quantities of products (used as well as re-processed) across the supply chain, is formulated. Since the success of a reverse supply chain depends on its marketing strategy as well …

Disassembly Petri Net Generation In The Presence Of Xor Precedence Relationships, K. E. Moore, Askiner Gungor, Surendra M. Gupta Oct 2010

Disassembly Petri Net Generation In The Presence Of Xor Precedence Relationships, K. E. Moore, Askiner Gungor, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

A disassembly process plan (DPP) is a sequence of disassembly tasks which begins with a product to be disassembled and terminates in a state where all the parts of interest are disconnected. Disassembly process planning is critical for minimizing the resources invested in disassembly and maximizing the level of automation of the disassembly process and the quality of the parts (or materials) recovered. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which automatically generates a disassembly PN (DPN) from a geometrically-based disassembly precedence matrix (DPM). This algorithm can be used to generate DPPs for products which contain simple AND, OR, complex …

Disassembly-To-Order System Using Linear Physical Programming, Elif Kongar, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

One of the most responsible ways of processing end-of-life (EOL) products is to minimize their disposal to landfills by reusing, remanufacturing and/or recycling them. Often, this necessitates a certain level of disassembly. It is therefore necessary to plan disassembly processing efficiently so as to minimize costs and the amount of disposal as well as to maximize reuse, remanufacturing and recycling. In this paper, we present a disassembly-to-order system to determine the number of EOL products to process to fulfill a certain demand for products, parts and/or materials under a variety of objectives and constraints using a newly developed decision tool, …

Atomic Force Microscopy For Better Probing Surface Properties At Nanoscale: Calibration, Design And Application, Yu Liu Oct 2010

Atomic Force Microscopy For Better Probing Surface Properties At Nanoscale: Calibration, Design And Application, Yu Liu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

To measure force by AFM with high resolution requires accurate calibration of optic – lever detection sensitivity and spring constant. On biological AFM force mode, the coupling effects of the liquid environment, spot size of laser beam and laser spot location on AFM cantilever backside, must be considered to correlate the static sensitivities from force curves in air and in liquid for calibration. An effective model has been developed first and experimentally elucidated to calibrate the static sensitivity in liquid. The proposed model eliminates inconvenience of static sensitivity calibration in liquid with possible contamination sources.

The static sensitivity based on …

Analysis And Simulations Of Z-Source Inverter Control Methods, B. Y. Husodo, M. Anwari, S. M. Ayob, Taufik

Electrical Engineering

In this paper, two different control methods for Z-source inverter are examined. The Simple Boost and the Maximum Boost control methods of the inverter are analyzed and compared each other using simulation with MATLAB/Simulink. The Simple Boost control with independence relation between modulation index and shoot-through duty ratio is also simulated and analyzed. The selection of high modulation index and shoot-through duty ratio can reduce the inverter’s dc link voltage overshoot and increasing power delivery capacity of the inverter.

Mechanical Engineering

Calls for educational reform emphasize the need for student-centered learning approaches that foster lifelong learning. To be a lifelong learner includes characteristics consistent with those of self-directed learners, such as being curious, motivated, reflective, analytical, persistent, flexible, and independent. Instructor support of students’ self-directed learning (SDL) development relies on understanding and balancing these factors in the classroom. Engineering educators play a critical role in influencing outcomes related to SDL through their design of courses that support students’ transitions from controlled to autonomous learning behaviors. This study will examine a variety of engineering courses and pedagogical approaches. Each will be characterized …

Understanding The Interaction Between Blood Flow And An Applied Magnetic Field, Francy L. Sinatra Oct 2010

Understanding The Interaction Between Blood Flow And An Applied Magnetic Field, Francy L. Sinatra

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hemodynamic monitoring is extremely important in the accurate measurement of vital parameters. Current methods are highly invasive or noncontinuous, and require direct access to the patient’s skin. This study intends to explore the modulated magnetic signature of blood method (MMSB) to attain blood flow information. This method uses an applied magnetic field to magnetize the iron in the red blood cells and measures the disturbance to the field with a magnetic sensor [1]. Exploration will be done by experimentally studying in-vitro, as well as simulating in COMSOL the alteration of magnetic fields induced by the flow of a magnetic solution. …

Increasing Parameter Certainty And Data Utility Through Multi-Objective Calibration Of A Spatially Distributed Temperature And Solute Model, Christina J. Bandaragoda, Bethany T. Neilson Oct 2010

Increasing Parameter Certainty And Data Utility Through Multi-Objective Calibration Of A Spatially Distributed Temperature And Solute Model, Christina J. Bandaragoda, Bethany T. Neilson

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

To support the goal of distributed hydrologic and instream model predictions based on physical processes, we explore multi-dimensional parameterization determined by a broad set of observations. We present a systematic approach to using various data types at spatially distributed locations to decrease parameter bounds sampled within calibration algorithms that ultimately provide information regarding the extent of individual processes represented within the model structure. Through the use of a simulation matrix, parameter sets are first locally optimized by fitting the respective data at one or two locations and then the best results are selected to resolve which parameter sets perform best …

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin Oct 2010

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We report on the embedding of a domain specific language, (X)HTML, into Haskell and demonstrate how this superficial non-context-free language can be represented and rendered to guarantee World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) compliance. Compliance of web content is important for the health of the Internet, accessibility, visibility, and reliable search. While tools exist to verify web content is compliant according to the W3C, few systems guarantee that all produced content is compliant. We present CH-(X)HTML, a library for generating compliant (X)HTML content by using Haskell to encode the nontrivial syntax of (X)HTML set forth by the W3C. Any compliant document …

Malaria remains a serious concern for people living and traveling to warm climates in Africa, Asia, and some parts of America. Understanding the mechanism of the malaria parasite in the liver phase could lead to important discoveries for preventative and treatment therapeutics before the disease develops into the blood stage. While in vitro liver cell culture models have been explored, a device that mimics the liver cell architecture with the capability of high-resolution imaging has never been created. In this research, a cell culture microfluidic device was designed and fabricated with a membrane integrated design to mimic the architecture of …

Continuous Electrowetting Actuation Utilizing Current Rectification Properties Of Valve Metal Films, Corey M. Lynch Oct 2010

Continuous Electrowetting Actuation Utilizing Current Rectification Properties Of Valve Metal Films, Corey M. Lynch

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) is a technique for reducing the apparent contact angle of a fluid droplet, which has many promising applications in the fields of optics, digital displays, and lab-on-a-chip research. In this thesis, a design is presented for a novel single circuit device for achieving continuous droplet motion, by using the current-rectifying properties of valve metals to create diode-like behavior. This contrasts with existing designs, which require an array of individual electrodes to achieve motion in discrete steps. We are able to demonstrate continuous droplet motion across a 28mm-long test strip with an applied voltage of 303 V …
