Wide Field Of View Imaging Of Premotor And Sensorimotor Cortex Activation Patterns By Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Pankaj Chand
Wide Field Of View Imaging Of Premotor And Sensorimotor Cortex Activation Patterns By Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Pankaj Chand
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive optical technique which can measure concentration changes of oxygenated (HbO), deoxygenated (HbR), and total hemoglobin (HbT) in brain tissue that are induced by neuronal activation. A major hindrance at present for brain optical imaging research is the limited field of view (FOV) size, which is restricted due to the limited number of source-detector pairs that current fNIRS hardware technology and cost considerations allow. As a result it is challenging to simultaneously capture hemodynamic changes in the premotor, motor and sensory cortex as some of these activations can occur outside the available FOV. …
Novel Animal Model And In Vivo Imaging System To Study Inflammatory Response-Mediated Cancer Metastasis, Cheng-Yu Ko
Novel Animal Model And In Vivo Imaging System To Study Inflammatory Response-Mediated Cancer Metastasis, Cheng-Yu Ko
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Cancer metastasis is the leading cause of death in cancer patients. A vast majority of cancer-related mortality is attributed to this rather than the primary tumor itself, making the understanding of cancer metastasis critically important. Inflammatory responses have been implicated to play an important role in cancer metastasis. However, the investigation of the relationship between inflammation and cancer cell migration is limited by the lack of a reproducible cancer metastasis animal model. To fill the gap, we have recently developed an animal model. This model is composed of a two-step procedure. First, poly-L lactic acid (PLA) microspheres were implanted subcutaneously …
Mechanisms Of Biomaterial Mediated Fibrotic Responses And Strategies To Improve Tissue Reactions To Biomaterial Implants, Paul Todd Thevenot
Mechanisms Of Biomaterial Mediated Fibrotic Responses And Strategies To Improve Tissue Reactions To Biomaterial Implants, Paul Todd Thevenot
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Despite considerable advancements in biomaterial synthesis and modification techniques, most tissue engineering scaffolds elicit fibrotic reactions resulting in implant encapsulation, secluding cells and/or therapeutic agents within a thick collagenous matrix. Therefore, strategies to minimize these responses while improving the functionality of recruited/transplanted cells are required. This work set out to improve the host response to biomaterials and identify what cellular responses were attributed to biomaterial-mediated fibrosis. Two strategies were investigated involving two different targets. In the first approach, PLGA scaffolds were RFGD modified to bear -NH2 (amine), -COOH (carboxyl), and -OH (hydroxyl) groups altering surface wettability and charge properties. Surface …

Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder where limitation or cessation of breathing occurs. It is characterized by abnormalities in the respiratory pattern and quantity of ventilation during sleep. According to a study 4% of men and 2% of women have sleep apnea, which is a sizable sector of the adult population. To analyze end-tidal CO₂ and heart hate variations due to apnea, 8 hr polysomnography (Sleep Consultant. Inc, Fort Worth, Texas) was performed on limited sleep apnea subjects and breath hold maneuvers were performed in awake subjects. In the simulated apnea study, 16 volunteer subjects (age: 29 ± 5 yrs, …
Development Of An Accident Model For Construction Industry, Hoda Alavi
Development Of An Accident Model For Construction Industry, Hoda Alavi
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Safety has always been a persistent problem in the construction industry. Construction accidents are a major concern for the construction industry and the researchers. In spite of the role of many construction accident causation models in understanding the accident process, none adequately explain the underlying reasons for construction accidents because of their dynamic nature. To overcome this restriction a new advancement in understanding construction accidents has been proposed by Howell et al (2002) based on the work of Rasmussen (1997). The model recognizes that organizational and individual forces push workers in to hazardous conditions. These forces overcome efforts to impose safe …

Characteristics Of Fresh Municipal Solid Waste, Tashfeena Taufiq
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
The characteristics of fresh municipal solid waste (MSW) are critical in planning, designing, operating or upgrading solid waste management systems. Physical composition, moisture content, compacted unit weight, permeability are the most important MSW characteristics to be considered in planning a system. When the landfill is operated as enhanced leachate recirculation (ELR) landfill, the physical and hydraulic characteristics are of particular interest in determining the amount of moisture to be recirculated and to design the leachate recirculation and gas collection systems. The current study presents the physical and hydraulic characteristics of MSW collected from the working face of Denton Landfill. The …

Small-strain soil stiffness properties such as shear modulus, shear wave velocity, and material damping, are key subsoil parameters for an adequate analysis and design of unsaturated earth structures subject to static and non-static loading. Most conventional geotechnical testing techniques, however, are not able to capture this small-strain behavior and, hence, enormously underestimate the true soil stiffness, primarily due to inaccuracies in small-strain measurements. Around the world, a great deal of research efforts has been dedicated to field and laboratory based measurements of soil suction, assessments of soil-water retention properties, and analyses of swell-collapse behavior. However, very few efforts have been …

Pathological conditions like coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral artery diseases as well as cardiovascular interventions used in the treatment of coronary artery diseases such as angioplasty and stenting, damage/injure the blood vessel wall, leading to inflamed or activated endothelial cells that have been implicated in events leading to thrombosis, inflammation, and restenosis. Oral administration of anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory drugs causes systemic toxicity, bleeding, patient incompliance, and inadequate amounts of drugs at the injured area. Though drug-eluting stents have shown therapeutic benefits, complications such as in-stent restenosis and late thrombosis still remain and are a cause for …
Development Of Orchestrated Stem Cell-Based Regeneration (Oscer) -Strategies To Recruit And Differentiate Autologous Stem Cells For Tissue Regeneration, Ashwin Nair
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Stem cell therapy has shown great promise in curing diseases. However, clinical application of stem cell therapy is often hindered by the lack of reliable sources and convenient methods to recover stem cells. Our laboratory has recently discovered that adult stem cells can be actively recruited via inflammatory chemokines/growth factor. My research was aimed towards the development of a new technology - "Orchestrated Stem Cell-based Regeneration" or OSCeR - to induce stem cell-mediated tissue regeneration by blending stem cell therapy and tissue engineering technology. This work has led to a series of interesting findings as listed below. Shortly after implantation, …

Predition Of Torque And Radial Forces In Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Using Field Reconstruction Method, Banharn Sutthiphornsombat
Predition Of Torque And Radial Forces In Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Using Field Reconstruction Method, Banharn Sutthiphornsombat
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Due to their high torque-to-loss ratio, permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) have received increasing attention in automotive applications over the past decade. Because of this unique characteristics, many applications have utilized PMSM. In addition to high efficiency, quiet operation of the machines is desirable in automotive, naval and military applications. In order to operate at high efficiency quietly, the torque pulsation or torque ripple needs to be monitored and mitigated accurately. Magnitude of the torque ripple is influenced by the magnetic design (cogging torque) and excitation, and the pattern of ripple is affected by the machine's geometry (stator slots).Field reconstruction …
Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta
Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
In this thesis, I present novel circuit designs that convert a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag into a semi-passive RFID tag. Passive RFID tags are relatively inexpensive to purchase and to integrate into objects and devices. However, in some environments and on some objects the performance of the pure passive tags is not sufficient for the intended applications. A semi-passive tag, in comparison to a pure passive tag, has significantly greater communication range since the semi-passive tag derives its operational power from an on-tag power source instead of just from an interrogator's communication signal. As a result, semi-passive tags …

Optimal Output Gain Algorithm For Feed-Forward Network Training, Babu Hemanth Kumar Aswathappa
Optimal Output Gain Algorithm For Feed-Forward Network Training, Babu Hemanth Kumar Aswathappa
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
A batch training algorithm for feed-forward networks is proposed which uses Newton's method to estimate a vector of optimal scaling factors for output errors in the network. Using this vector, backpropagation is used to modify weights feeding into the hidden units. Linear equations are then solved for the network's output weights. Elements of the new method's Gauss-Newton Hessian matrix are shown to be weighted sums of elements from the total network's Hessian. The effect of output transformation on training a feed-forward network is reviewed and explained, using the concept of equivalent networks. In several examples, the new method performs better …

H.264 Standard Based Side Information Generation In Wyner-Ziv Coding, Subrahmanya Maira Venkatrav
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
The traditional video coding involves a high complexity encoder and relatively low complexity decoder. The complexity of the encoder is mainly due to motion estimation [3] and other prediction techniques employed . There is a new paradigm emerging in video coding - Distributed video coding (DVC). This is based on Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv6 theorems. In Wyner-Ziv video coding, encoder is less complex compared to the decoder. The decoder is very complex due to prediction involved for side information (SI) generation. There is lot of research done previously on linear density parity check codes (LDPC) and H.263 standard based SI generation …

Capacitive Strain Sensors For Measurement Of Large Strain For Structural Health Monitoring, Clement Jacob
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is increasingly used to replace time based management, with a more efficient Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). The traditional scheme of scheduling down time for aircraft inspection or periodic evaluation of civil infrastructure costs millions of dollars in maintenance due to either downtime or lack of timely maintenance. SHM involves periodic, real time sampling and analysis of signals, from onboard sensors like accelerometer, pressure, strain or acoustic sensors to determine the condition of the structure. This can be used to carry out immediate repairs as well as predict failure. We report the development of a new high …

Detection And Severity Classification Of Rotor Imbalance Faults In Induction Machines, Himanshu Jain
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
As world economy continues to globalize, increased competition has lead to a reduction in profit margins. To remain competitive in such an economy, an industry needs to reduce the downtime of critical components even for maintenance purposes. However, this should not jeopardize the genuine maintenance needs of the equipments. In other words, an optimized maintenance strategy is needed, in which maintenance is performed only when a need for it arises; unlike the currently popular periodic maintenance. Condition based Maintenance (CBM) is one such strategy. Induction machines are work horse of an industry. Their criticality to industry may be gauged by …

Low Complexity H.264 To Vc-1 Transcoder, Vidhya Vijayakumar
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
The high definition video adoption has been growing rapidly for the last five years. The H.264 and VC-1 coding standards are two of the recent and dominant coding standards. Compared to H.264, VC-1 is less complex but capable of achieving the same visual quality as H.264. Hence there is increasing importance of techniques which can convert video from H.264 to VC-1 and thereby enable mobile devices to work with less complex codecs. While there has been recent work on VC-1 to H.264 transcoding, the published work on H.264 to VC-1 transcoding is nearly non-existent. This has created the motivation to …

The development of methods for the re-use and modification of motion data is an activearea of research. Among these methods, we find automatic techniques to generate a spliced motion by combining different actions recorded in separate sessions. Motion splicing allows capturing motion independently and later combining them to create a new natural looking motion. Even though there have been a lot of research on motion editing techniques, less focus has been given to evaluate these edited motions. In this thesis, we present a novel methodology to quantitatively evaluate the synthesized motion generated by different motion editing techniques. We implemented three …

Solution To Incompressible Navier Stokes Equations By Using Finite Element Method, Wanchai Jiajan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The finite element method has become a popular method for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. High Reynolds number cases require fine meshes so computational efficiency becomes an important factor in algorithm and code development. In this work, a Galerkin finite element method is proposed to solve the two dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. This approach typically leads to a sparse and indefinite matrix that is difficult to solve efficiently. The formation of an indefinite matrix is avoided in the present work by introducing an artificial compressibility term in the continuity equation. The concept of this method is to transform …
