Technical Investigaton Of Thin-Film Plasticizing Lithium Ion Battery, Xin-Ping Ai, Xin-Lin Hong, Quan-Feng Dong, Sheng-Xian Li, Han-Xi Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

A number of polymer materials as candidates of host matrix of plastic polymer electrolyte were examined and techniques for preparation of thin-film electrolyte were reported. The results showed that the polymer electrolyte prepared with P(VDF-HFP) copolymer as host matrix and DBP as plasticizer exhibit the satisfactory mechanical strength and ionic conductivity. In comprison with liquid electrolyte systems, thin-film lithium ion battery has almost similar charge-discharge capacity and cycleability. The manufacture methods and the technical factors in making plasticizing lithium ion battery were also described in details.

Study On Carbon From Pyrolyzing Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin For The Negative Electrode Of Li-Ion Secondary Battery, Zhi-Yuan Tang, Xin-Guo Zhuang, Yu-Mei Zhai, Jian-Gang Li, Jian-Jun Xue, Chun-Yan Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Li-ion secondary batteries negative electrodes were prepared by low temperature (<1 000 ℃) pyrolysis of commercial phenol-formaldhyde resin. A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and an X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were peoformed for the pyrolytic carbonaceous materials. The results indicated that these samples are amorphous polyacenic structure materials. With increasing pyrolytic temperature, these materials become structurally order, and the first charge-discharge special capacities reduce. The specific capacities base on pyrolytic temperature, involving lithium storage nanometer cavities.

Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance Study On The Promoted Electron Transfer Process At Gold Electrode, Xia-Qin Wu, Zhe-Su Wang, Xiao-Yun Meng, Zong-Rang Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The adsorption behavior of amino acids, such as L-cysteine, histidine and arginine at gold-quartz crystal microbalance (Au-QCM) was investigated. The adsorption quantity of cysteine is more appreciable than others because of the stronger interaction between its thiol group and the gold electrode surface. The electron-transfer process of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in presence of cysteine at Au-QCM has also been studied using the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) technique which reveals clearly the quasi-reversible electron-transfer process accompanied by the frequency shift cycle. The reversible adsorption and disorption processes are discussed.

Rotation-Invariant Synthetic Discriminant Function Filter For Pattern Recognition, Vahid R. Riasati, Partha P. Banerjee, Mustafa A. G. Abushagur, Kenneth B. Howell May 2000

Rotation-Invariant Synthetic Discriminant Function Filter For Pattern Recognition, Vahid R. Riasati, Partha P. Banerjee, Mustafa A. G. Abushagur, Kenneth B. Howell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The ring synthetic discriminant function (RSDF) filter for rotation-invariant response is discussed for pattern recognition. This method uses one half of a slice of the Fourier transform of the object to generate the transfer function of the filter. This is accomplished by rotating the one half of a slice in the Fourier domain through 2π rad about the zero-frequency point of the Fourier plane. This filter has the advantage of always matching at least one half of a slice of the Fourier transform of any rotation of the image. An analytical discussion of the filter construction and correlation results are …

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak May 2000

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

We compute the outside-cell interference factor of a code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system for a three-dimensional (3-D) air-to-ground (AG) "cellular-like" network consisting of a set of uniformly distributed ground base stations and airborne mobile users. The CDMA capacity is roughly inversely proportional to the outside-cell interference factor. It is shown that for the nearly free-space propagation environment of these systems, the outside-cell interference factor can be larger than that for terrestrial propagation models (as expected) and depends approximately logarithmically upon both the cell height and cell radius.

A Hybrid Finite Element-Finite Difference Method For Thermal Analysis In A Double-Layered Thin Film, Teng Zhu Apr 2000

A Hybrid Finite Element-Finite Difference Method For Thermal Analysis In A Double-Layered Thin Film, Teng Zhu

Doctoral Dissertations

Thin film technology is of vital importance in microtechnology applications. For instance, thin films of metals, of dielectrics such as SiO2, or Si semiconductors are important components of microelectronic devices. The reduction of the device size to the microscale has the advantage of enhancing the switching speed of the device. The reduction, on the other hand, increases the rate of heat generation that leads to a high thermal load on the microdevice. Heat transfer at the microscale with an ultrafast pulsed-laser is also a very important process for thin films. Hence, studying the thermal behavior of thin films or of …

Cramer-Rao Bound And Optimal Amplitude Estimator Of Superimposed Sinusoidal Signals With Unknown Frequencies, Shaohui Jia Apr 2000

Cramer-Rao Bound And Optimal Amplitude Estimator Of Superimposed Sinusoidal Signals With Unknown Frequencies, Shaohui Jia

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation addresses optimally estimating the amplitudes of superimposed sinusoidal signals with unknown frequencies. The Cramer-Rao Bound of estimating the amplitudes in white Gaussian noise is given, and the maximum likelihood estimator of the amplitudes in this case is shown to be asymptotically efficient at high signal to noise ratio but finite sample size. Applying the theoretical results to signal resolutions, it is shown that the optimal resolution of multiple signals using a finite sample is given by the maximum likelihood estimator of the amplitudes of signals.

Solid-State Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of The Methyl Dynamics Of Poly(Alpha-Methylstyrene) And Polymethylphenylsilane, Robert D. O'Connor, Eric J. Ginsburg, Frank D. Blum Apr 2000

Solid-State Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of The Methyl Dynamics Of Poly(Alpha-Methylstyrene) And Polymethylphenylsilane, Robert D. O'Connor, Eric J. Ginsburg, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The methyl-d3 dynamics of two relatively similar polymers, poly(alpha-methylstyrene) (PAMS-d3) and polymethylphenylsilane (PMPS-d3), are investigated via deuterium NMR relaxation experiments. Our analysis of the relaxation data uses the entire solid-echo spectra to maximize the precision of the experiments with regard to the information available on the methyl dynamics. The analysis is novel in that it does not use M[infinity] or M0 to fit the relaxation data. Additionally, the three-site symmetric jump model is shown to not have an observable azimuthal angular dependence for T1 relaxation. The methyl dynamics are quantified with taum, sigma, and f which are the log-average correlation …

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold Apr 2000

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical model for the existence of a Critical Size Defect (CSD) in certain animals is the focus of the majority of this dissertation. Adam [1] recently developed a one-dimensional model of this phenomenon, and chapters I–V address the exist the CSD in a two-dimensional model and a three-dimensional model. The two dimensional (or 1-d circular) model is the more appropriate for a study of CSD's. In that model we assume a circular wound of uniform depth and develop a time-independent form of the diffusion equation relevant to the study of the CSD phenomenon. It transpires that the range of …

A Buffered Advection/Dispersion Lake Water Quality Transport Framework For Modeling Lake Gaston Pipeline Intake Water Withdrawal, Lloyd Ashton Gatling

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Water quality response to reservoir water withdrawal is investigated in Pea Hill Arm of Lake Gaston, a non-tidal reservoir tributary, where the point of water withdrawal is in an upstream tributary and influences the direction of tributary flow causing longitudinal velocity null flow conditions to occur. The study also focuses on control of withdrawal rate and timing to optimize both quality of water remaining in the tributary and quantity of water that can be safely withdrawn.

Research was conducted assuming steady state conditions and later under spatial and temporal variability experienced in the reservoir with main lake pool elevation fluctuations …

A Generic Object-Oriented Server Model, Brian Douglas Jones Apr 2000

A Generic Object-Oriented Server Model, Brian Douglas Jones

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a generic, object-oriented model for the simulation of networks of queues. Generic simulation modeling provides robust ways of laying out processes in stochastic, event driven simulations. The approach taken is to define a methodology that will be implementation independent, termed the Generic Server Simulation Model (GSSM); thus, leaving the implementers to choose the best (most suited for their use) means of implementation. GSSM uses many object-oriented concepts to provide its basic structure and has in its design the ability to take advantage of these object-oriented concepts, including reuse of (existing) code. GSSM …

A Digital Pressure Sensor Data Acquisition System In A Wind Tunnel Model, John J. Novakoski Apr 2000

A Digital Pressure Sensor Data Acquisition System In A Wind Tunnel Model, John J. Novakoski

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Pressure measurements on wind tunnel models provide an important aid to overall aerodynamic analysis and design of aircraft and vehicles. Most pressure measurements in wind tunnels are made using analog pressure sensors with interfacing electronics that connect to an external data acquisition unit. Some of desirable features of an improved pressure measurement system are that it be: 1) model embeddable, 2) inherently digital in nature, 3) intelligent, and 4) controllable by a remote computer.

An intelligent, model-embedded, eight-channel digital pressure sensor system has been developed and tested in a wind tunnel. The implemented system consists of Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) digital …

Process Flow Optimization Studies Through Discrete Event Simulation, Milind Chokshi Apr 2000

Process Flow Optimization Studies Through Discrete Event Simulation, Milind Chokshi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computer-aided simulation has begun to emerge as a powerful tool for numerical analysis of the behavior and anticipated performance of industrial systems and their optimization. Applications include materials handling, storage and controls systems, prediction of manufacturing efficiencies, and production optimization. Simulations are used to test baseline models and subsequently analyze new production concepts, operating strategies, and planned procedures prior to costly implementation.

The study of process flows in a manufacturing environment is difficult due to its inherent stochastic nature. Breakdown of the sub-systems and failures of machines is a random process and needs to be solved based on concepts of …

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank Mar 2000

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Although the large-scale stratigraphy of many terrestrial foreland basins is punctuated by major episodes of gravel progradation, the relationships of such facies to hinterland tectonism and climate change are often unclear. Structural reentrants provide windows into older and more proximal parts of the foreland than are usually exposed, and thus provide key insights to earlier phases of foreland evolution. Our magnetostratigraphic studies show that, although the major lithofacies preserved within the Himachal Pradesh structural reentrant in northwestern India resemble Neogene facies in Pakistan, they have a much greater temporal and spatial variability. From 11.5 to 7 Ma, major facies boundaries …

An Interpretation Of Martian Thermospheric Waves Based On Analysis Of A General Circulation Model, Manoj Joshi, Jeffery Hollingsworth, Robert Haberle, Alison Bridger Mar 2000

An Interpretation Of Martian Thermospheric Waves Based On Analysis Of A General Circulation Model, Manoj Joshi, Jeffery Hollingsworth, Robert Haberle, Alison Bridger

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

Planetary‐scale longitudinal variations in density observed by the Mars Global Surveyor accelerometer in the 125 km region can be qualitatively reproduced by the NASA Ames Mars general circulation model in the 80 km altitude region, but only when locations having specific local times are used in the analysis. If the model results are averaged over all local times, the high‐altitude longitudinal variations nearly disappear, leaving only a small stationary wave 1 pattern, consistent with theory and previous modeling studies. This analysis suggests that the observed wavelike structures are a result of sampling tidal modes at a limited range of local …

Toxicity Of Tolyltriazole To Gram-Positive Coccus Microorganisms, Heather L. Mitchell Mar 2000

Toxicity Of Tolyltriazole To Gram-Positive Coccus Microorganisms, Heather L. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining safe flight operations, military and civilian, in cold weather requires the use of de-icing fluids. Glycols, the primary component of de-icers, have been extensively studied. Water and additives such as corrosion inhibitors and other performance enhancing chemicals make up the remaining portion of de-icing fluids. Little research has been conducted on the additives, but several are suspected toxins to microorganisms, therefore the EPA regulates the disposal of spent de-icing fluids. Tolyltriazole, a corrosion inhibitor found in de-icing fluids, is a suspected human carcinogen. It is also known to be moderately toxic to microorganisms based on Microtox results. The purpose …
