Models, Composability, And Validity, Eric Werner Weisel Apr 2004

Models, Composability, And Validity, Eric Werner Weisel

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Composability is the capability to select and assemble simulation components in various combinations into simulation systems to satisfy specific user requirements. The defining characteristic of composability is the ability to combine and recombine components into different simulation systems for different purposes. The ability to compose simulation systems from repositories of reusable components has been a highly sought after goal among modeling and simulation developers. The expected benefits of robust, general composability include reduced simulation development cost and time, increased validity and reliability of simulation results, and increased involvement of simulation users in the process. Consequently, composability is an active research …

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu Apr 2004

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In practice, many large-scale linear programming problems are too large to be solved effectively due to the computer's speed and/or memory limitation, even though today's computers have many more capabilities than before. Algorithms are exploited to solve such large linear programming problems, either in the sequential or parallel computation environment. This study focuses on two parallel algorithms for solving large-scale linear programming problems efficiently.

The first parallel decomposition algorithm discussed in this study is from the theory problems in a special block-angular structure. The theory or the decomposition principle is first examined. Since the subproblems of a linear programming problem …

Microdischarge Arrays, Wenhui Shi Apr 2004

Microdischarge Arrays, Wenhui Shi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Microhollow cathode discharges (MHCDs) are DC or pulsed gas discharges between two electrodes, separated by a dielectric, and containing a concentric hole. The diameter of the hole, in this hollow cathode configuration, is in the hundred-micrometer range. MHCDs satisfy the two conditions necessary for an efficient excimer radiation sources: (1) high energy electrons which are required to provide a high concentration of excited or ionized rare gas atoms; (2) high pressure operation which favors excimer formation (a three-body process). Flat panel excimer sources require parallel operation of MHCDs. Based on the current-voltage characteristics of MHCD discharges, which have positive slopes …

Static Analysis Of Memory-Accessing Gestures In Java, Christopher R. Hill Mar 2004

Static Analysis Of Memory-Accessing Gestures In Java, Christopher R. Hill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We propose the notion of Java-program gestures that are composed of a series of memory-accessing instructions. By finding patterns in gestures whose execution can be atomic, we can load them in an intelligent memory controller. This process can improve performance of the Java Virtual Machine, decrease code footprint, and reduce power consumption in hardware. In this thesis we formally define a language of gestures and introduce a method of detecting them statically at compile-time. We introduce a simple heuristic for reducing the number of gestures that must be loaded into the memory controller and show that finding the minimum number …

Design And Implementation Of A String Matching System For Network Intrusion Detection Using Fpga-Based Bloom Filters, Sarang Dharmapurikar, Michael Attig, John Lockwood Mar 2004

Design And Implementation Of A String Matching System For Network Intrusion Detection Using Fpga-Based Bloom Filters, Sarang Dharmapurikar, Michael Attig, John Lockwood

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Modern Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) inspect the network packet payload to check if it conforms to the security policies of the given network. This process, of-ten referred to as deep packet inspection, involves detection of predefined signature strings or keywords starting at an arbitrary location in the payload. String matching is a computationally intensive task and can become a potential bottleneck without high-speed processing. Since the conventional software-implemented string matching algorithms have not kept pace with the increasing network speeds, special purpose hardware solutions have been introduced. In this paper we show how Bloom filters can be used effectively …

Explosion Dynamics Of Pyroclastic Eruptions At Santiaguito Volcano, Jeffrey B. Johnson, Andrew J. L. Harris, Steve T. M. Sahetapy-Engel, Rudiger Wolf, William I. Rose Mar 2004

Explosion Dynamics Of Pyroclastic Eruptions At Santiaguito Volcano, Jeffrey B. Johnson, Andrew J. L. Harris, Steve T. M. Sahetapy-Engel, Rudiger Wolf, William I. Rose

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

In Jan. 2003 we monitored explosions at Santiaguito Volcano (Guatemala) with thermal, infrasonic, and seismic sensors. Thermal data from 2 infrared thermometers allowed computation of plume rise speeds, which ranged from 8 to 20 m/s. Rise rates correlated with cumulative thermal radiance, indicating that faster rising plumes correspond to explosions with greater thermal flux. The relationship between rise speeds and elastic energy is less clear. Seismic radiation may not scale well with thermal output and/or rise speed because some of the thermal component may be associated with passive degassing, which does not induce significant seismicity. But non-impulsive gas release is …

Deviation Of Time-Resolved Luminescence Dynamics In Mwir Semiconductor Materials From Carrier Recombination Theory Predictions, Peter M. Johnson Mar 2004

Deviation Of Time-Resolved Luminescence Dynamics In Mwir Semiconductor Materials From Carrier Recombination Theory Predictions, Peter M. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Time resolved luminescence spectroscopy was used to characterize luminescence decay curves for a bulk InAs sample and an InAsSb type-I quantum-well sample over the first 3ns following excitation. The luminescence decay curves were then converted to carrier densities and used to find recombination coefficients that provided the least-squared-error solution of the rate equation describing carrier recombination. Recombination coefficients describing Shockley Read-Hall (ASRH) radiative (Brad) and Auger (CAug) recombination were determined at two different temperatures and four excitation powers, then analyzed for consistency and physical significance. For all of the resulting least …

An Analysis Of Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Of Ultra Wideband(Uwb) And Ieee 802.11a Wireless Local Area Network (Wlan) Employing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (Ofdm), Juan Lopez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Military communications require the rapid deployment of mobile, high-bandwidth systems. These systems must provide anytime, anywhere capabilities with minimal interference to existing military, private, and commercial communications. Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology is being advanced as the next generation radio technology and has the potential to revolutionize indoor wireless communications. The ability of UWB to mitigate multipath fading, provide high-throughput data rates (e.g., greater than 100 Mbps), provide excellent signal penetration (e.g., through walls), and low implementation costs makes it an ideal technology for a wide range of private and public sector applications. Preliminary UWB studies conducted by The Institute for …

Service Oriented Computing Imperatives In Ad Hoc Wireless Settings, Rohan Sen, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill Mar 2004

Service Oriented Computing Imperatives In Ad Hoc Wireless Settings, Rohan Sen, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Service oriented computing is a new paradigm that is gaining popularity in dis-tributed computing environments due to its emphasis on highly specialized, modular and platform-agnostic code facilitating interoperability of systems. It borrows concepts from more mature paradigms such as object-oriented and component computing. This results in a progression from object-oriented computing to component computing and finally to service oriented computing, a new paradigm for designing and delivering software. Just as an object encapsulates state and behavior at a fine level of granularity, a service offers similar encapsulation at a larger scale. This evolution raises the level of abstraction at which …

Optical Characterization And Modeling Of Compositionally Matched Indium Arsenide-Antimonide Bulk And Multiple Quantum Well Semiconductors, Scott C. Phillips Mar 2004

Optical Characterization And Modeling Of Compositionally Matched Indium Arsenide-Antimonide Bulk And Multiple Quantum Well Semiconductors, Scott C. Phillips

Theses and Dissertations

Indium arsenide-antimonide (InAsSb) semiconductors have been determined to emit in the 3-5 micrometer range, the window of interest for countermeasures against infrared electro-optical threats. This experiment set out to cross the bulk to quantum well characterization barrier by optically characterizing two sets of compositionally matched type I quantum well and bulk well material samples. Absorption measurements determined the band gap energy of the bulk samples and the first allowed subband transition for the quantum wells. By collecting absorption spectra at different temperatures, the trend of the energy transitions was described by fitting a Varshni equation to them. The expected result …

Preparation Studies For Secondary Electron Emission Experiments On Superconducting Niobium, Anoop George, Robert A. Schill Jr. Mar 2004

Preparation Studies For Secondary Electron Emission Experiments On Superconducting Niobium, Anoop George, Robert A. Schill Jr.

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Accelerator driven transmutation of waste is one complementary approach to deal with spent nuclear fuel as compared to permanent storage. High-energy protons generated by a particle accelerator collide with a heavy metal target producing neutrons. Long-lived radioactive isotopes interacting with the neutrons transmute into shorter-lived isotopes. To generate the high-energy protons efficiently, linear accelerators use multi-cell superconducting radio frequency (RF) cavities made of niobium. Superconducting niobium cavities have several advantages, including small power dissipation. The high electromagnetic fields present in these cavities may result in undesired field emission from surface imperfections with the probability of generating an avalanche of secondary …

Corollaries On The Fixpoint Completion: Studying The Stable Semantics By Means Of The Clark Completion, Pascal Hitzler Mar 2004

Corollaries On The Fixpoint Completion: Studying The Stable Semantics By Means Of The Clark Completion, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The fixpoint completion fix (P) of a normal logic program P is a program transformation such that the stable models of P are exactly the models of the Clark completion of fix (P). This is well-known and was studied by Dung and Kanchanasut [15]. The correspondence, however, goes much further: The Gelfond-Lifschitz operator of P coincides with the immediate consequence operator of fix (P), as shown by Wendt [51], and even carries over to standard operators used for characterizing the well-founded and the Kripke-Kleene semantics. We will apply this knowledge to the study of …

Astronaut Eva Exposure Estimates From Cad Model Spacesuit Geometry, Giovanni De Angelis, Brooke M. Anderson, William Atwell, John E. Nealy, Gary D. Qualls, John W. Wilson Mar 2004

Astronaut Eva Exposure Estimates From Cad Model Spacesuit Geometry, Giovanni De Angelis, Brooke M. Anderson, William Atwell, John E. Nealy, Gary D. Qualls, John W. Wilson

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Ongoing assembly and maintenance activities at the International Space Station (ISS) require much more extravehicular activity (EVA) than did the earlier U.S. Space Shuttle missions. It is thus desirable to determine and analyze, and possibly foresee, as accurately as possible what radiation exposures crew members involved in EVAs will experience in order to minimize risks and to establish exposure limits that must not to be exceeded. A detailed CAD model of the U.S. Space Shuttle EVA Spacesuit, developed at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), is used to represent the directional shielding of an astronaut; it has detailed helmet and backpack …

A Rapidly-Converging Alternative To Source Iteration For Solving The Discrete Ordinates Radiation Transport Equations In Slab Geometry, Nicholas J. Wager Mar 2004

A Rapidly-Converging Alternative To Source Iteration For Solving The Discrete Ordinates Radiation Transport Equations In Slab Geometry, Nicholas J. Wager

Theses and Dissertations

I present a numerical technique to solve the time independent Boltzmann Transport Equation for the transport of neutrons and photons. The technique efficiently solves the discrete ordinates equations with a new iteration scheme. I call this new scheme the angle space distribution iteration method because it combines a non-linear, high angular-resolution flux approximation within individual spatial cells with a coarse angular-resolution flux approximation that couples all cells in a spatial mesh. This shown to be an efficient alternative to source iteration. The new method is implemented using the step characteristic and exponential characteristic spatial quadrature schemes. The latter was introduced …

Swarm Based Implementation Of A Virtual Distributed Database System In A Sensor Network, Wen C. Lee Mar 2004

Swarm Based Implementation Of A Virtual Distributed Database System In A Sensor Network, Wen C. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in recent military operations has had success in carrying out surveillance and combat missions in sensitive areas. An area of intense research on UAVs has been on controlling a group of small-sized UAVs to carry out reconnaissance missions normally undertaken by large UAVs such as Predator or Global Hawk. A control strategy for coordinating the UAV movements of such a group of UAVs adopts the bio-inspired swarm model to produce autonomous group behavior. This research proposes establishing a distributed database system on a group of swarming UAVs, providing for data storage during a …

With Department of Defense (DoD) weapon systems being deeply rooted in the command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) structure, it is necessary for combat models to capture C4ISR effects in order to properly assess military worth. Unlike many DoD legacy combat models, the agent based model System Effectiveness and Analysis Simulation (SEAS) is identified as having C4ISR analysis capabilities. In lieu of requirements for all new DoD C4ISR weapon systems to be placed within a DoD Architectural Framework (DoDAF), investigation of means to export data from the Framework to the combat model SEAS began. Through operational, system, …

Atmospheric Simulation Using A Liquid Crystal Wavefront Controlling Device, Matthew R. Brooks Mar 2004

Atmospheric Simulation Using A Liquid Crystal Wavefront Controlling Device, Matthew R. Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

Test and evaluation of laser warning devices is important due to the increased use of laser devices in aerial applications. In this thesis, an atmospheric aberrating system is developed to enable in-lab testing of laser warning devices. This system employs laser light at 632.8nm from a Helium-Neon source and a spatial light modulator (SLM) to cause phase changes using a birefringent liquid crystal material. Before the system can be used, the SLM phase response must be quantified to ensure proper manipulation of index of refraction. Additionally, diffraction from the SLM and real-world system scaling are addressed. Once completed, the atmospheric …

Characterization Of Microbial Processes That Degrade Chlorinated Solvents In A Constructed Wetland Using Organic Acid And Inorganic Anion Concentration Profiles, Chad B. Bondurant

Theses and Dissertations

Chlorinated solvents have been used in industrial cleaning and degreasing processes in the United States since the early 1900s, and their induction into the environment increased significantly with the growth of industrial processes over the past century. PCE, TCE and their daughter products have been associated with a number of human health concerns and are currently the most common contaminants found in groundwater in the United States. Wetlands possess characteristics necessary for the complete degradation of chlorinated ethenes by microorganisms via anaerobic and aerobic regions that foster the necessary oxidation-reduction conditions. Organic acid and inorganic anion concentrations were evaluated in …

Modeling A Field Application Of In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Groundwater Using Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells (Hftws), Peter G. Chosa Mar 2004

Modeling A Field Application Of In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Groundwater Using Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells (Hftws), Peter G. Chosa

Theses and Dissertations

Perchlorate contaminated groundwater is rapidly becoming a significant environmental remediation issue for the Department of Defense. In this study, an existing numerical model that simulates the operation of a Horizontal Flow Treatment Well (HFTW) system to effect the in situ biodegradation of perchlorate through the addition of an electron donor is modified to include a submodel that describes bioclogging. Bioclogging restricts flow out of the HFTW due to the accumulation of biomass directly adjacent to the well. The modified model is then applied to an existing perchlorate contaminated site that will be used for an evaluation of the HFTW technology. …

Application Of Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells For In Situ Treatment Of Mtbe-Contaminated Groundwater, Preston F. Rufe Mar 2004

Application Of Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells For In Situ Treatment Of Mtbe-Contaminated Groundwater, Preston F. Rufe

Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized a three-dimensional numerical model to evaluate the potential application of HFTWs to manage MTBE-contaminated groundwater. HFTWs consist of two dual-screened treatment wells. One well operates in an upflow mode, with MTBE-contaminated water extracted from an aquifer through a screen in the deep portion of an aquifer and injected into the aquifer through a shallow well screen, while the adjacent well operates in a downflow mode, extracting water from the shallow zone of the aquifer and injecting it into the deep zone. As the MTBE-contaminated water flows through the wells, an electron acceptor and/or another electron donor is …

Making The Business Case For Sustainable Design In The Department Of Defense, David M. Warnke Mar 2004

Making The Business Case For Sustainable Design In The Department Of Defense, David M. Warnke

Theses and Dissertations

Buildings are one of the largest consumers of natural resources, a major source of ecological pollution, and occasionally toxic to human health. Sustainable design is the common term associated with buildings which, during their construction, use, and eventual disposal, seek to minimize their negative impact on the environment and human health. The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system helps to assess a building's sustainability level. In the Federal Government's push to set the example for the rest of the nation, nearly every Federal Agency has chosen to adopt the LEED assessment tool. Each …

Concurrent with this apparent decrease in reliability, the Coast Guard seeks ways to expand the HH- 65’s Airborne Use of Force capabilities as a result of the September 11th, 2001 terrorists’ attacks. This study is an exploratory, empirical analysis of engine and airframe component replacements as related to engine mishaps and reliability in the HH-65. We use contingency table analysis, ordinary least squares regression, and logistic regression to examine the mishap history and component replacement …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics-Task V: First Quarterly Report 01/12/04-02/29/04, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen Feb 2004

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics-Task V: First Quarterly Report 01/12/04-02/29/04, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the TRP proposed application. Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with only very sparse experimental data. Scientists have noticed that the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the liquid alloy could control the corrosion rate of steels exposed to Pb or Pb-Bi. At high …
