High-Pressure Kinetic Interactions Between Co And H2 During Syngas Catalytic Combustion On Pdo, Ran Sui, John Mantzaras, Rolf Bombach, Meysam Khatoonabadi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The catalytic combustion of H2/CO/O2/N2 mixtures over PdO was investigated at pressures 3 to 10 bar, H2:CO volumetric ratios 1:5 to 3:1, and global equivalence ratios ψ = 0.13 and 0.23. The catalyst surface temperatures were controlled to 540-690 K, a range especially important for hybrid hetero-/homogeneous combustion approaches with large gas turbines at idle or part-load operation and for microreactors with recuperative small-scale turbines. In situ Raman measurements determined the major gas-phase species concentrations over the catalyst boundary layers in a channel-flow reactor, thermocouples monitored the surface temperatures, and surface characterization identified the catalyst oxidation state (PdO) and surface …

Jointly-Learnt Networks For Future Action Anticipation Via Self-Knowledge Distillation And Cycle Consistency, Md Moniruzzaman, Zhaozheng Yin, Zhihai He, Ming-Chuan Leu, Ruwen Qin
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Future action anticipation aims to infer future actions from the observation of a small set of past video frames. In this paper, we propose a novel Jointly learnt Action Anticipation Network (J-AAN) via Self-Knowledge Distillation (Self-KD) and cycle consistency for future action anticipation. In contrast to the current state-of-the-art methods which anticipate the future actions either directly or recursively, our proposed J-AAN anticipates the future actions jointly in both direct and recursive ways. However, when dealing with future action anticipation, one important challenge to address is the future's uncertainty since multiple action sequences may come from or be followed by …

Spatial Transformation Of A Layer-To-Layer Control Model For Selective Laser Melting, Xin Wang, Robert G. Landers, Douglas A. Bristow
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique with challenges in its complexity of process parameters and lack of control schemes. Traditionally, people tried time-domain or frequency-domain control methods, but the complexity of the process goes beyond these methods. In this paper, a novel spatial transformation of SLM models is proposed, which transforms the time-domain process into a spatial domain model and, thus, allows for state-space layer-to-layer control methods. In a space domain, this also provides the convenience of modelling laser path changes. Finally, a layer-to-layer Iterative Learning Control (ILC) method is designed and demonstrates the methodology of …

This work challenges the common assumption in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) that the movement intention of a human user can be simply modeled with dynamic equations relating forces to movements, regardless of the user. Studies in physical human-human interaction (pHHI) suggest that interaction forces carry sophisticated information that reveals motor skills and roles in the partnership and even promotes adaptation and motor learning. In this view, simple force-displacement equations often used in pHRI studies may not be sufficient. To test this, this work measured and analyzed the interaction forces (F) between two humans as the leader guided the blindfolded follower …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Residual stresses developed during additive manufacturing (AM) can influence the mechanical performance of structural components in their intended applications. In this study, thermomechanical residual stress simulations of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process are conducted for both simplified (plate and cube-shaped) geometries as well as five complex lattice geometries fabricated with Inconel 718. These simulations are conducted with the commercial software package Simufact Additive©, which uses a non-linear finite element analysis and layer-by-layer averaging approach in determining residual stresses. To verify the efficacy of the Simufact Additive© simulations, numerical results for the plate and cube-shape geometries are analyzed for …

The many iterations needed to explore a design space in the conceptual design process preclude the use of time-consuming RANS CFD for all but a few flight conditions. This research focuses on identifying the level of fidelity needed to adequately predict the aerothermodynamic characteristics of hypersonic vehicles. Three tools with differing levels of fidelity – CBAERO, Cart3D, and Kestrel – were used to analyze the Generic Hypersonic Vehicle (GHV) at the design condition of Mach 5.85 and an off-design condition of Mach 4.5. The results are representative of the different design tools but are not definitive due to the mesh …

Vibration Bending Fatigue Analysis Of Additively Repaired Ti-6al-4v Airfoil Blades, Lucas Jordan Smith
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Repairing airfoil blades is necessary to extend the life of turbine engines. Directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing (AM) provides the ability to add material at a specific location on an existing component. In this work, AM repairs on Ti-6Al-4V airfoil blades were analyzed to determine what effect the repair will have on the blade performance in high cycle vibration fatigue testing. Targeted sections were cut out of airfoil blades near high stress locations and repaired using DED. To understand the defects that arose with this type of repair, computed tomography imaging was used to quantify the defects from the …

Lashing and de-lashing operations of containers cargo on board containerships are considered as quite strenuous activities in which operators are required to work continuously over a 6 or 8 hours shift with very limited break. This is mostly because containerships need to leave the port as soon as possible and containers loading and unloading operations must be executed with very high productivity (stay moored in a port is a totally unproductive time for a ship and a loss-making business for a shipping company). Operators performing lashing and de-lashing operations are subjected to intense ergonomic stress and uncomfortable working postures. To …
Investigating Ground Interactions Of A Rotocraft Landing Vehicle On Titan, Adam Rozman
Investigating Ground Interactions Of A Rotocraft Landing Vehicle On Titan, Adam Rozman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The exploration of celestial bodies has recently advanced from rovers to rotorcraft. This includes the recent flights of Mars Ingenuity and the upcoming Dragonfly mission to explore the terrain of Saturn’s moon Titan as part of NASA’s New Frontiers Program. Flight-based landers can travel quickly to sites kilometers apart and land in complex terrain. Although cruise conditions for these rotorcrafts are well understood, studies are necessary to understand take-off and landing. In ground effect conditions, a rotor wake impinges and reflects off the ground, creating changes in aerodynamics such as increased lift. Additionally, operating over loose surfaces, the rotors can …

Autoignition Delay Time Measurements And Chemical Kinetic Modeling Of Hydrogen/Ammonia/Natural Gas Mixtures, Jessica Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In recent years, hydrogen-carrying compounds have accrued interest as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels due to their function as zero-emission fuels. As such, there is interest in investigating hydrogen-carrying compounds to improve understanding of the fuels' characteristics for use in high pressure systems. In the current study, the oxidation of ammonia/natural gas/hydrogen mixtures was carried out to study CO formation profiles as well as the ignition delay times behind reflected shock waves in order to refine chemical kinetic models. Experiments were carried out in the University of Central Florida's shock tube facility by utilizing chemiluminescence to obtain OH* emission …
Prediction And Validation Of Residual Stresses In Additively Manufactured Metal Parts, Jose Mayi Rivas
Prediction And Validation Of Residual Stresses In Additively Manufactured Metal Parts, Jose Mayi Rivas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Selective Laser Melted (SLM) Additively Manufactured (AM) metal parts are of special interest to many industries because their designs can be made arbitrarily complex while still maintaining bulk type mechanical properties. However, the large thermal gradients inherent to the SLM process generate residual stresses (RS) and distortions that are detrimental to the fit, functionality and integrity of parts. Predicting the state of stresses in as-built 3D printed parts is a difficult problem that currently has only been approached with the use of transient thermomechanical Finite Element Models (FEMs). The nonlinearities associated with AM processes are difficult to capture in these …
Generative Adversarial Networks For Extrapolation Of Corrosion In Automobile Images, Andre Von Zuben
Generative Adversarial Networks For Extrapolation Of Corrosion In Automobile Images, Andre Von Zuben
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Deep learning has shown success in several applications involving pattern recognition, expert systems, and scientific discovery. However, existing methods struggle with industrial applications, which are often challenged by non-ideal datasets. In many cases, the datasets are small, poorly labeled, noisy, or have unbalanced class distribution or any combination of such problems. In this Master's research, we propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) strategy that is able to circumvent limitations imposed by tiny datasets. As a case study, we use the extrapolation of corrosion in automobiles and feed our deep learning framework with only a few dozen images instead of the …
Simulation Of A Comprehensive Heat Recovery Steam Generator, Jose Chalarca Castro
Simulation Of A Comprehensive Heat Recovery Steam Generator, Jose Chalarca Castro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
With the increasing prevalence of renewables, it is important to optimize combined cycle power plants during transient conditions to better compliment the variable generation of renewable energy generators. There is a demand for dynamic heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) models that may enable improved control designs. Sufficiently accurate real-time simulations of HRSGs may serve as soft sensors and state estimators during transient conditions. Furthermore, real-time simulations of HRSGs can be used for operator training which does not incur the inherit risk of using plant hardware. The focus of this research is on the development towards an integrated dynamic closed loop …
The Fluid Dynamics Of A Spanwise-Morphing Wing: An Experimental And Analytical Study, Kamlesh Joshi
The Fluid Dynamics Of A Spanwise-Morphing Wing: An Experimental And Analytical Study, Kamlesh Joshi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The unsteady forces and fluid flow structure of a morphing wing are investigated for low Reynolds number (Re) flows, i.e., Re < 20,000. The morphing wing is designed to change shape in the spanwise direction in a controlled manner using internal actuation. The two types of wing morphing are studied in this work, i.e., spanwise bending and spanwise twisting. The wing morphing is named based on the overall shape of the wing after it is dynamically morphed.
Laptop Recycling Case Study: Estimating The Contained Value And Value Recovery Process Feasibility Of End-Of-Life Consumer Electronics, Zebulon Hart
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
Work has been done to establish, through the development and use of novel assay techniques and analysis metrics, the contained value of a sampling of laptop computers (as an analog for myriad e-waste sources). This work has conceptualized e-waste as an alternative to geologic-origin complex metallic ores and has likewise evaluated the feasibility of value recovery from e-waste sources in a similar manner to an ore. The application of conventional and novel mineral separation techniques to e-waste recycling processes has been evaluated and positive results are demonstrated. Further, this work has demonstrated the ability to identify the presence of base …

Modeling Human Control Behavior In Command-Following Tasks, Sajad Koushkbaghi
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Humans interact with a variety of complex dynamic systems on a daily basis. However, they are often the lesser understood component of human-in-the-loop (HITL) systems. In this dissertation, we present the results of two HITL experiments to investigate the control strategies that humans use when performing command-following tasks. The first experiment is designed to investigate the control strategies that humans use to interact with nonlinear dynamic systems. Two groups of human subjects interact with a dynamic system and perform a command-following task. One group interacts with a linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamic system and the other group interacts with a Wiener …
Energy And Economic Modeling Of Stillage Dewatering Processes In Kentucky Bourbon Distilleries, William Brennan
Energy And Economic Modeling Of Stillage Dewatering Processes In Kentucky Bourbon Distilleries, William Brennan
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Stillage is a byproduct of alcohol distillation and must be managed in all distilleries to sustain operations. In the United States, fuel ethanol plants typically convert all stillage into Dried Distillers’ Grains with Solubles (DDGS). This process and its variations are well known. Typical stillage management approaches are not well known, however, for the Kentucky bourbon industry. A survey of stillage management approaches in operational bourbon distilleries was conducted. Process modeling was performed to evaluate the energy and economic considerations of the available stillage dewatering methods for a 7 Million Original Proof Gallon (MMOPG) distillery. Monte Carlo simulations were performed …
Quantitative Methods For Total Lifecycle Risk Likelihood And Impact Assessment In Sustainable Product Design Decision Making, Christian Enyoghasi
Quantitative Methods For Total Lifecycle Risk Likelihood And Impact Assessment In Sustainable Product Design Decision Making, Christian Enyoghasi
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Sustainable products promise significant economic, environmental, and societal benefits. Numerous methods are available for use during the new product development process to identify alternate product designs that optimize sustainability performance. Once any such design is selected and the product is launched, many uncertainties are likely to affect its performance over the total lifecycle. Such uncertainties give rise to risks that can influence the overall product sustainability performance. However, comprehensive quantitative methods to evaluate the likelihood or the impact of different risks to enable sustainable product design decision making are lacking.
This research aims to address this gap by developing a …
In-Situ Characterization Of Surface Quality In Γ-Tial Aerospace Alloy Machining, David Adeniji
In-Situ Characterization Of Surface Quality In Γ-Tial Aerospace Alloy Machining, David Adeniji
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The functional performance of critical aerospace components such as low-pressure turbine blades is highly dependent on both the material property and machining induced surface integrity. Many resources have been invested in developing novel metallic, ceramic, and composite materials, such as gamma-titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl), capable of improved product and process performance. However, while γ-TiAl is known for its excellent performance in high-temperature operating environments, it lacks the manufacturing science necessary to process them efficiently under manufacturing-specific thermomechanical regimes. Current finish machining efforts have resulted in poor surface integrity of the machined component with defects such as surface cracks, …
Radiative Conductivity Estimation Using Direct Approach For Fibrous Materials, Mohammad Khaleel
Radiative Conductivity Estimation Using Direct Approach For Fibrous Materials, Mohammad Khaleel
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
During planetary entry, space vehicles encounter high loads of thermal energy which requires a thermal protection system. Ablative thermal protection systems are usually made out of fibrous materials that exhibit internal radiation. In order to model the internal radiation response of a thermal protection system one should obtain proper radiative properties as well as thermal properties. The objective of this work is to provide a method that solves for the solid/gas thermal conductivity. Which can be used in coupled detailed radiative analysis.
Keywords: radiative conductivity, fibrous materials, radiative transfer, thermal protection system, P1 approximation, Finite Volume method.
A Decoupled Engineering Methodology For Accurate Prediction Of Ablative Surface Boundary Conditions In Thermal Protection Systems, Justin Cooper
A Decoupled Engineering Methodology For Accurate Prediction Of Ablative Surface Boundary Conditions In Thermal Protection Systems, Justin Cooper
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The main objective of the present work is to demonstrate a method for prediction of aerothermal environments in the engineering design of hypersonic vehicles as an alternative to the current heritage method. Flat plate and stagnation point boundary layer theory require multiple assumptions to establish the current engineering paradigm. Chief among these assumptions is the similarity between mass and heat transfer. Origins of these assumptions are demonstrated and their relationship to conservative engineering design is analyzed, as well as conditions where they possibly break down. An alternative approach for assessing aerothermal environments from the fluid domain is presented, which permits …
Formation Control With Bounded Controls And Collision Avoidance: Theory And Application To Quadrotor Unmanned Air Vehicles, Zachary S. Lippay
Formation Control With Bounded Controls And Collision Avoidance: Theory And Application To Quadrotor Unmanned Air Vehicles, Zachary S. Lippay
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This dissertation presents new results on multi-agent formation control and applies the new control algorithms to quadrotor unmanned air vehicles. First, this dissertation presents a formation control algorithm for double-integrator agents, where the formation is time varying and the agents’ controls satisfy a priori bounds (e.g., the controls accommodate actuator saturation). The main analytic results provide sufficient conditions such that all agents converge to the desired time-varying relative positions with one another and the leader, and have a priori bounded controls (if applicable). We also present results from rotorcraft experiments that demonstrate the algorithm with time-varying formations and bounded controls. …

The Effects Of Reference-Command Preview On The Strategies That Humans Use In Command-Following Tasks, Amelia J. S. Sheffler
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This thesis presents results from an experiment in which 22 human subjects each interact with a dynamic system 40 times over a one-week period. For each interaction, a subject performs a command-following task, where the reference command is the same for all 22 subjects but different on each trial. The subjects are divided into 2 groups of 11 subjects. One group performs the command-following task without reference-command preview. The other group is provided with 1-s preview of the reference command. The experimental results are used to examine the effects of reference-command preview. For the group with 1-s reference-command preview, the …
Small-Satellite Attitude Control Using Sinusoidal Actuator Motion: Experiments On The International Space Station, K. Ryan Lush
Small-Satellite Attitude Control Using Sinusoidal Actuator Motion: Experiments On The International Space Station, K. Ryan Lush
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
In this work, we design, build, and test two 1.25U CubeSats. These small satellites were deployed on the International Space Station to perform attitude control experiments in microgravity. These CubeSats use an oscillating-mass actuation system for attitude control as opposed to traditional flywheels. Each CubeSat uses 3 pairs of servomotors to oscillate masses about 3 orthogonal axes. The servomotors have strict rotational stroke limits. Thus, they cannot spin continually. To oscillate each pair of masses, the angle of each servomotor is commanded using signals that are continuous and piecewise sinusoidal with amplitudes that do not violate the servomotor stroke constraints. …

Experimental Comparison Of Two Sampled-Data Adaptive Control Algorithms For Rejecting Sinusoidal Disturbances, William Grayson Woods
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
We review two adaptive control algorithms that address the problem of rejecting sinusoids with known frequencies that act on an unknown asymptotically stable linear time-invariant system. We present modifications to the algorithms that address the problems of sensor noise and actuator saturation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithms and compare the performance of the algorithms via numerical simulation and experimental testing.
