Spheroidization Heat Treatment Conditions With Data Analysis In Medium Carbon Cr-Mo Steel For Ultra High Strength Cold Heading, Yong Deok Jo, Sung Yi, Byoung Lok Jang

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The degree to which parameters affect the spheroidization heat treatment of steel was calculated by setting the spheroidization heat treatment conditions of Cr-Mo steel and using data analysis such as S/N ratio and ANOVA. After analyzing the transformation temperatures of the steel, Ac1 and Ac3, using a DSC, the conditions were set accordingly. The surface hardness was measured for the conditions and used as an evaluation index. The correlation was analyzed by comparing the spheroidized volume fraction and the surface hardness, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was -0.88, proving that a correlation existed between the two values. …

Measurement Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) On Indoor Materials: Method Development, Aurélie Laguerre, Elliott T. Gall Jun 2023

Measurement Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) On Indoor Materials: Method Development, Aurélie Laguerre, Elliott T. Gall

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wildfire smoke penetrates indoors, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke may accumulate on indoor materials. We developed two approaches for measuring PAHs on common indoor materials: (1) solvent-soaked wiping of solid materials (glass and drywall) and (2) direct extraction of porous/fleecy materials (mechanical air filter media and cotton sheets). Samples are extracted by sonication in dichloromethane and analyzed with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Extraction recoveries range from 50–83% for surrogate standards and for PAHs recovered from direct application to isopropanol-soaked wipes, in line with prior studies. We evaluate our methods with a total recovery metric, defined as the sampling and …

The Role Of High-Order Anharmonicity And Off-Diagonal Terms In Thermal Conductivity: A Case Study Of Multi-Phase Cspbbr3, Xiangdong Ding, Guimei Zhu, Yi Xia, Jie Ren, Jun Sun, Multiple Additional Authors

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate the influence of three- and four-phonon scattering, perturbative anharmonic phonon renormalization, and off-diagonal terms of coherent phonons on the thermal conductivity of CsPbBr3 phase change perovskite, by using advanced implementations and first-principles simulations. Our study spans a wide temperature range covering the entire structural spectrum. Notably, we demonstrate that the interactions between acoustic and optical phonons result in contrasting trends of phonon frequency shifts for the high-lying optical phonons in orthorhombic and cubic CsPbBr3 as temperature varies. Our findings highlight the significance of wavelike tunneling of coherent phonons in ultralow and glasslike thermal conductivity in halide perovskites.

This paper analyzes the implementation of the Solidworks® Topology Optimization add-in into the mechanical design process and discusses required postprocessing to ensure manufacturability of the optimized part though a case study on two example parts. Results of traditional optimization, topology optimization and “selective” optimization (optimization using the results from topology optimization to selectively remove …

Statistical Uncertainty Of The Ignition Time, Burning Rate, And Extinction Characteristics Of Engineered Timber Products, Jacob David Jun 2023

Statistical Uncertainty Of The Ignition Time, Burning Rate, And Extinction Characteristics Of Engineered Timber Products, Jacob David

Master's Theses

The characterization of flammability parameters such as time to ignition, mass loss rate (MLR), and extinction criteria is critical for understanding ignition and burning behavior of timber products. These parameters, often determined with bench scale experiments, have previously been presented in literature. However, standard test methods generally use relatively low trial quantities (e.g., n=3) which can potentially cause large variation in reported values. This study investigates the influence of trial quantity on observed statistical variation in key flammability metrics for timber products (e.g., ignition time, peak MLR, MLR at extinction). Using a conical heater, 100 repeat trials were conducted …

Development Of A Low-Cost Acoustic Gauge For Simultaneous Tide And Wave Measurement, Alexander Kalman Dunn Jun 2023

Development Of A Low-Cost Acoustic Gauge For Simultaneous Tide And Wave Measurement, Alexander Kalman Dunn

Master's Theses

High-quality tide and wave data are essential in a variety of fields including coastal engineering, climate science, disaster response, and recreational activities. Accurate data are publicly accessible from government organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), however the high costs associated with deploying and maintaining their high accuracy gauges results in a deficit of localized data. Commercial gauges available starting at $2,000 are still expensive for local agencies and individual users to deploy and maintain. These commercial options can also be limited in their scope, accuracy, or ease of use. In this thesis, a low-cost acoustic gauge …

Computational Study On The Acoustic Footprint Of Stenosis In Larger Arteries, Ahmed Abdelnabi Jun 2023

Computational Study On The Acoustic Footprint Of Stenosis In Larger Arteries, Ahmed Abdelnabi

Theses and Dissertations

We identify a new (acoustic) frequency-stenosis relations whose frequencies fall within the recommended auscultation threshold for stethoscopy (< 120 Hz) in this study. We demonstrate that these relations can be used to extend the application of phonoangiography (the measurement of the degree of stenosis from bruits) to stethoscopes that are broadly available. The First relationship is successfully identified using an analysis limited to the acoustic signature of the von Karman vortex street, which we automatically isolate using a metric based on an area-weighted average of the Q-criteria for the post-stenotic region. Specifically, we conduct LES-CFD simulations on simplified 2D internal flow geometries that represent blood vessels with varying degrees of stenosis. Then, using the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation, we extract their emitted acoustic signals, which we subtract from a pure signal (stenosis-free) at the same heart rate. Next, we transform this differential signal to the frequency domain and meticulously classify its acoustic signatures according to six stenosis-invariant flow phases of a cardiac cycle. Using our Q-criterion-based metric, we then automatically restrict our acoustic analysis to the noises emitted by the von Karman vortex street (phase 4). Our analysis of its acoustic signature demonstrates a strong linear relationship between the degree of steno- sis and its dominant frequency, which differs significantly from the break frequency and heart rate (previously identified dominant frequencies). For the Second relationship, we develop a frequency-stenosis scaling law for particularly supravalvular aortic stenosis that falls within the preferred frequency range (30-120 Hz) for echocardiography. We expand to 3D patient specific geometry using Simulia’s Living Heart Human Model (LHHM), which has an anatomically accurate aorta geometry. This LHHM geometry is modified with stenoses ranging from 30 to 80 percent (moderate to severe). For physiologically consistent hemodynamic boundary conditions, we expand the study to employ the Windkessel model, which has been implemented on Fluent using UDF. We demonstrate that physiological boundary conditions reduce simulation time significantly compared to static boundary conditions. The FW-H model extracted the flow-generated acoustic signal of the stenotic geometries and analysed it at clinically relevant receiver locations. A preferred receiver location consistent with clinical practise is determined, and a correlation between the degree of stenosis and the prevalent acoustic frequency (within the frequency range of 70-120 Hz) is established. The obtained second scaling law is shown to be clinically reliable in assessing stenotic severity. Future research will investigate incorporating the vibroacoustic role of adjacent organs and tissue to expand the clinical applicability of our findings. Expansion of clinical and numerical datasets will be pursued in future research to enhance the reliability of our scaling law, possibly by leveraging much-needed ML-based acceleration schemes.

Optimal Domain-Partitioning Algorithm For Real-Life Transportation Networks And Finite Element Meshes, Jimesh Bhagatji, Sharanabasaweshwara Asundi, Eric Thompson, Duc T. Nguyen Jun 2023

Optimal Domain-Partitioning Algorithm For Real-Life Transportation Networks And Finite Element Meshes, Jimesh Bhagatji, Sharanabasaweshwara Asundi, Eric Thompson, Duc T. Nguyen

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

For large-scale engineering problems, it has been generally accepted that domain-partitioning algorithms are highly desirable for general-purpose finite element analysis (FEA). This paper presents a heuristic numerical algorithm that can efficiently partition any transportation network (or any finite element mesh) into a specified number of subdomains (usually depending on the number of parallel processors available on a computer), which will result in “minimising the total number of system BOUNDARY nodes” (as a primary criterion) and achieve “balancing work loads” amongst the subdomains (as a secondary criterion). The proposed seven-step heuristic algorithm (with enhancement features) is based on engineering common sense …

Vortex Particle Method For Electric Ducted Fan In Non-Axisymmetric Flow, Eduardo Alvarez, Cibin Joseph, Andrew Ning Jun 2023

Vortex Particle Method For Electric Ducted Fan In Non-Axisymmetric Flow, Eduardo Alvarez, Cibin Joseph, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

The vortex particle method has been reformulated in recent work as a large eddy simulation (LES) in a scheme that is both meshless and numerically stable, solving long-standing issues of numerical stability. In this study, we build upon this meshless LES scheme to create a simulation framework for electric ducted fans. This poses the challenge of introducing solid boundaries in the vorticity form of the Navier-Stokes equations without a mesh. Rotor blades are introduced in our computational domain through an actuator line model (ALM) following well-established practices for LES. A novel, vorticity-based, actuator surface model (ASM) is developed for the …

Novel Approach For Non-Invasive Prediction Of Body Shape And Habitus, Emma Young Jun 2023

Novel Approach For Non-Invasive Prediction Of Body Shape And Habitus, Emma Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While marker-based motion capture remains the gold standard in measuring human movement, accuracy is influenced by soft-tissue artifacts, particularly for subjects with high body mass index (BMI) where markers are not placed close to the underlying bone. Obesity influences joint loads and motion patterns, and BMI may not be sufficient to capture the distribution of a subject’s weight or to differentiate differences between subjects. Subjects in need of a joint replacement are more likely to have mobility issues or pain, which prevents exercise. Obesity also increases the likelihood of needing a total joint replacement. Accurate movement data for subjects with …

Importance Of Vegetation In Tsunami Mitigation: Evidence From Large Eddy Simulations With Fluid-Structure Interactions, Abhishek Mukherjee

Dissertations

Communities worldwide are increasingly interested in nature-based solutions like coastal forests for the mitigation of coastal risks. Still, it remains unclear how much protective benefit vegetation provides, particularly in the limit of highly energetic flows after tsunami impact. The present thesis, using a three-dimensional incompressible computational fluid dynamics model with a fluid-structure interaction approach, aims to quantify how energy reflection and dissipation vary with different degrees of rigidity and vegetation density of a coastal forest.

In this study, tree trunks are represented as cylinders, and the elastic modulus of hardwood trees such as pine or oak is used to characterize …

These improvements showed the important role of nanostructures’ interaction within the biodegradable lubricant. The thermal conductivity performance improved for nanolubricants ranging from 6.5% at 30 °C and 0.20 wt.% AgNs content up to a maximum 32.2%, which was obtained at …

A New Atomization Paradigm: Smart Wave-Augmented Varicose Explosions, Daniel Mason Wilson May 2023

A New Atomization Paradigm: Smart Wave-Augmented Varicose Explosions, Daniel Mason Wilson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The characterization of viscous, non-Newtonian slurry heating and atomization by means of internal wave excitation is presented for a twin-fluid injector. We detail mechanisms that enhance their disintegration in a novel process called “Wave-Augmented Varicose Explosions” (WAVE). Atomization of such fluids is challenging, especially at low gas-liquid mass ratios. Droplet production is further complicated when slurry viscosity varies widely; if viscosity levels are too high, atomization quality suffers, and an undesirable pressure drop restricts the flow. To mitigate, we introduce and demonstrate “Smart” atomization, a novel implementation of simultaneous proportional integral derivative (PID) control algorithms to accommodate dynamically and extensively …

A Nonlinear Impact-Driven Triboelectric Vibration Energy Harvester For Frequency Up-Conversion, Hadeel Abumarar, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Energy harvesting effectively powers micro-sensors and wireless applications. However, higher frequency oscillations do not overlap with ambient vibrations, and low power can be harvested. This paper utilizes vibro-impact triboelectric energy harvesting for frequency up-conversion. Two magnetically coupled cantilever beams with low and high natural frequencies are used. The two beams have identical tip magnets at the same polarity. A triboelectric energy harvester is integrated with the high-frequency beam to generate an electrical signal via contact-separation impact motion between the triboelectric layers. An electrical signal is generated at the low-frequency beam range achieving frequency up-converter. The two degrees of freedom (2DOF) …

We compare the relevance of POMDP graphical models to addressing a given common task, the autonomous navigation, in mobile robotics, for robots in three different environments: legged walking, wheeled, and underwater robots. Principled approaches to the implementation of Intelligent robots in realistic environments with uncertainty exploit probabilistic models. The use of graphical models increases tractability and verifiability of probabilistic reasoning. Our robots face similar localization problems of passing by three doors on a corridor in a building, respectively, for the underwater case, of passing by three barrels in a pool. All the three robots are equipped solely with noisy sonars …

Flexible Magnetic Skin Sensor Array For Torsion Perception, Lucja Stawikowska, Erik D. Engeberg

Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics

Prosthetic hands help upper limb amputees and people who were born without hands. Currently, these prostheses are rather rudimentary and do not provide adequate sensing capabilities compared to a human hand. People use their natural hands to perceive complex tactile phenomena such as shear and torsion using thousands of mechanoreceptors in their fingertips. The capability to detect torsional loads at the fingertips is a notable gap in prosthetic hand sensation. Flexible tactile sensors are a promising new technology that would be ideal for prosthetic hands since they allow for stretching and movement like human skin without damage to the sensor. …

Flexural Wave Manipulation By Non-Hermitian Planar Elastic Metasurface, Katerina Stojanoska May 2023

Flexural Wave Manipulation By Non-Hermitian Planar Elastic Metasurface, Katerina Stojanoska

Theses and Dissertations

It has been demonstrated that metasurfaces with spatially asymmetric inner geometry exhibit unidirectional scattering effects, which can be used to control waves in a directional fashion. In this thesis, a planar Non-Hermitian elastic metasurface exhibiting unidirectional focusing of flexural waves is proposed. Asymmetrically loaded piezoelectric disks and metallic blocks comprise the unit cells. By using a negative capacitance shunting, a tunable material loss is embedded into the system. With suitable engineering of the induced loss profile, resonating building blocks are designed, which are capable of independently accessing unidirectional zero reflection. A planar metasurface is then created so that constructive interference …

Enhanced Throughput Of Aligned Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Manufacturing Via High-Speed Centrifugal Spinning, Jason Glen Ippolito May 2023

Enhanced Throughput Of Aligned Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Manufacturing Via High-Speed Centrifugal Spinning, Jason Glen Ippolito

Theses and Dissertations

Centrifugal spinning is noteworthy due to its high fiber throughput rate compared to other nanofiber manufacturing platforms. It is capable of producing fibers in the nanoscale diameter range from a multitude of polymers, such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN). With a traditional centrifugal spinner, fiber can be rapidly spun and collected on static posts. However, the use of static posts inevitably forms a dense ring of fiber after a short period of time, and this fiber build up can halt the spinning process. In this work, the factors that influence the throughput and scalability of highly aligned centrifugally spun PAN fibers are …

Yet, there is a lack of research and insufficient guidance for implementing BIM in energy-driven retrofitting. A BIM framework is presented to enhance decision-making processes during retrofitting. The aims of this study were to (1) identify BIM technologies and methodologies that could address existing barriers and improve efficiency …

A Literary Survey On The Challenges Of Adopting Lean In Aerospace Production And Aviation Maintenance, Seanan C. Lee May 2023

A Literary Survey On The Challenges Of Adopting Lean In Aerospace Production And Aviation Maintenance, Seanan C. Lee

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Lean production began as a new method for creating value through the elimination of waste, continuous process improvement by workers, and fostering respect for people. Despite its success in other industries, the significantly lower production volume, the substantially higher complexity, and the service-oriented nature of aviation maintenance demand significant adaptation of Lean principles to be effective. The lack of a holistic study on Lean adoption for aerospace production and aviation maintenance organizations hinders transformation as the two industries are intertwined in product and characteristics. Lean adoption in aerospace production is hindered by the lingering notion that it is an ‘‘automotive …
