Critical Variables Of Solder Paste Stencil Printing For Micro-Bga And Fine Pitch Qfp, Jianbiao Pan, Gregory L. Tonkay, Robert H. Storer, Ronald M. Sallade, David J. Leandri Oct 1999

Critical Variables Of Solder Paste Stencil Printing For Micro-Bga And Fine Pitch Qfp, Jianbiao Pan, Gregory L. Tonkay, Robert H. Storer, Ronald M. Sallade, David J. Leandri

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Stencil printing continues to be the dominant method of solder deposition in high volume surface mount assembly. Control of the amount of solder paste deposited is critical for fine pitch and ultra-fine pitch SMT assembly. The process is still not well understood as indicated by the fact that industry reports 52-71% of SMT defects are related to the solder paste stencil printing process. The purpose of this paper is to identify the critical variables that influence the deposited solder paste volume, area, and height. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of relevant process parameters on the amount of …

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu Oct 1999

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Micro-channel flows have been computed to investigate the influence of Navier-Stokes formulation for the slip-flow boundary condition, and a micro-polar fluid model, respectively.

The results of the slip boundary condition show that the current methodology is valid for slip-flow regime (i.e., for values of Knudsen number less than approximately 0.1). Drag reduction phenomena apparent in some micro-channels can be explained by slip-flow theory. These results are in agreement with some computations and experiments.

An ad hoc micro-polar fluid model is developed to investigate the influence of micro effects, such as micro-gyration, in micro-scale flows. The foundation of the ad hoc …

Effect Of Interfacial Mobility On Flexural Strength And Fracture Toughness Of Glass/Epoxy Laminates, T. W. H. Wang, Frank D. Blum, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mechanical testing and surface fractography were used to characterize the fracture of E-glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites as a function of the silane coupling agent used. gamma-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and delta-aminobutyltriethoxysilane (ABS) were used because these have been shown to have different interfacial mobilities at multilayer coverage. The values of the properties studied generally increased from untreated c, as determined from a Mode I translaminar fracture toughness tests, for the untreated composites (10.5 ± 0.4 kJ/m2) was lower than that for the ABS-treated composites (14.3 ± 2.1 kJ/m2) which was lower than that for the APS-treated composites (17.1 ± 2.4 kJ/m2). …

Suppression Of Post-Buckling Deflection And Panel-Flutter Using Shape Memory Alloy, Mohammad Tawfik Abo El So-Oud Oct 1999

Suppression Of Post-Buckling Deflection And Panel-Flutter Using Shape Memory Alloy, Mohammad Tawfik Abo El So-Oud

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A novel concept proposed is the use of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) to reduce the panel thermal deflection and flutter responses. SMA has unique ability to recover large prestrains completely when the alloy is heated (by aerodynamic heating in the present case) above the austenite start temperature As. During the recovery process, a large tensile recovery stress occurs if the SMA is restrained.

In this thesis, a panel subject to the combined aerodynamic and thermal loading is investigated. A nonlinear finite element model based on von Karman strain displacement relation is utilized to study the effectiveness of SMA …

Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz Oct 1999

Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz

Mechanical Engineering

Accurate tissue stress predictions for the annulus fibrosus are essential for understanding the factors that cause or contribute to disc degeneration and mechanical failure. Current computational models used to predict in vivo disc stresses utilize material laws for annular tissue that are not rigorously validated against experimental data. Consequently, predictions of disc stress resulting from physical activities may be inaccurate and therefore unreliable as a basis for defining mechanical–biologic injury criteria. To address this need we present a model for the annulus as an isotropic ground substance reinforced with two families of collagen fibers, and an approach for determining the …

The Mechtech Program: An Education And Training Model For The Next Century, Robert Forrant Sep 1999

The Mechtech Program: An Education And Training Model For The Next Century, Robert Forrant

New England Journal of Public Policy

The small-firm metalworking industry is routinely characterized by cutthroat competition and fierce privacy. Yet, since the late 1980s, the members of the western Massachusetts chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association have participated in an education, training, and technology diffusion network characterized by a high degree of interfirm cooperation. Hundreds of workers and managers have take part in group training sessions and seminars. The reconstruction of the skill base is central to the MechTech apprenticeship program through which apprentices spend four years in participating firms, exiting the program as licensed machinists, tool and die makers, or moldmakers. In an …

Evaluation Of The Use Of Optical Fiber Thermometers For Thermal Control Of The Quench Module Insert, Matthew R. Jones, Jeffery T. Farmer, Shawn P. Breeding Sep 1999

Evaluation Of The Use Of Optical Fiber Thermometers For Thermal Control Of The Quench Module Insert, Matthew R. Jones, Jeffery T. Farmer, Shawn P. Breeding

Faculty Publications

Issues regarding the use of optical fiber thermometers to control heater settings in a microgravity vacuum furnace are addressed. It is desirable to use these probes in environments such as the International Space Station, because they can be operated without re-calibration for extended periods. However, the analysis presented in this paper shows that temperature readings obtained using optical fiber thermometers can be corrupted by emissions from the fiber when extended portions of the probe are exposed to elevated temperatures.

Screen Printing Process Design Of Experiments For Fine Line Printing Of Thick Film Ceramic Substrates, Jianbiao Pan, Gregory L. Tonkay, Alejandro Quintero Sep 1999

Screen Printing Process Design Of Experiments For Fine Line Printing Of Thick Film Ceramic Substrates, Jianbiao Pan, Gregory L. Tonkay, Alejandro Quintero

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Screen printing has been the dominant method of thick film deposition because of its low cost. Many experiments in industry have been done and many models of the printing process have been developed since the 1960's. With a growing need for denser packaging and a drive for higher pin count, screen printing has been refined to yield high resolution prints. However, fine line printing is still considered by industry to be difficult. In order to yield high resolution prints with high first pass yields and manufacturing throughput, the printing process must be controlled stringently.

This paper focuses on investigating the …

Galnnas Resonant-Cavity-Enhanced Photodetector Operating At 1.3 Μm, J. B. Heroux, Xiaodong Yang, W. I. Wang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We demonstrate a GaAs-based p-i-n resonant-cavity-enhanced (RCE) GalnNAs photodetector operating near 1.3 µm. The device design was optimized using a transfer matrix method and experimental absorption spectra obtained from p-i-n structures grown without a resonant cavity. The RCE photodetector was fabricated in a single growth step by using GaAs/AlAs distributed Bragg reflectors for the top and bottom mirrors. A 72% quantum efficiency was obtained with a full width at half maximum of 11 nm.

Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien Aug 1999

Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien

Theses

The perfect and precise surgical cut, similar to today's laser one, is very important in many surgeries, especially in dissection and to recanaize arterial occlusive lessions. Causing no coagulation is one of the advantages of water jet because it generates no heat. It also provides omni-directional cutting capabilities at very high speeds, resulting edge quality that is usually superior to other existing conventional cutting processes. Debris is always carried away from incisions by jet stream and less damaged tissue, than mechanical incisions. In addition, water jet exerts minimal contact pressure on the tissue being cut due to the small diameter …

Assessment Of Environmental Performance Of Rapid Prototyping And Rapid Tooling Processes, Yanchun Luo, Ming-Chuan Leu, Zhiming Ji

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for assessing the environmental performance of solid freeform fabrication (SFF) based rapid prototyping and rapid tooling processes is presented in this paper. In this method of assessment, each process is divided into a number of life stages. The environmental effect of each process stage is analyzed and evaluated based on an environmental index utilizing the Eco-indicators that were compiled by PreConsultants of the Netherlands. The effects of various life stages are then combined to obtain the environmental performance of a process. In the assessment of SFF processes, we consider the material use in the fabrication of a part, …

Rapid Tooling By Integrating Electroforming And Solid Freeform Fabrication Techniques, Bo Yang, Ming-Chuan Leu Aug 1999

Rapid Tooling By Integrating Electroforming And Solid Freeform Fabrication Techniques, Bo Yang, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes a rapid tooling process that integrates solid freeform fabrication (SFF) with electroforming to produce metal tools including molds, dies, and electrical discharge machining (EDM) electrodes. Based on experimental data analysis, the geometry and material of the SFF part, the properties of the electroformed metal, and the process parameters are significant factors that cause inaccuracy in the manufactured tools. Thermomechanical modeling and numerical simulation is used to determine the geometry of the SFF part and the electroform thickness for minimizing the manufacturing time and cost while satisfying the tooling accuracy requirement.

Development Of Mechanical Properties Micromapping For Composite Polymer Systems, Zheng Huang Aug 1999

Development Of Mechanical Properties Micromapping For Composite Polymer Systems, Zheng Huang

Masters Theses

By adoption of classic indentation models (Hertzian, modified Hertzian, Sneddon, JKR), the elastic properties of polymeric material can be measured by AFM. Heterogeneous thin films were fabricated from polymer blends with a wide range of Young's moduli and thermal transition temperature to test the developed procedure. Results show that the micromapping of elastic properties can be obtained concurrently for glassy and rubber phases as well as across the interface with a lateral resolution better than 100 nm. Application of the elasticity micromapping on heterogeneous polymeric materials reveals thermal transition temperature that coincides very well with bulk values. Depth profile also …

Nonlinear Robust Missile Autopilot Design Using Successive Galerkin Approximation, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard Aug 1999

Nonlinear Robust Missile Autopilot Design Using Successive Galerkin Approximation, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard

Faculty Publications

The application of a new nonlinear robust control strategy to the design of missile autopilots is presented. The control approach described and demonstrated here is based upon the numerical solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation by Successive Galerkin Approximation. Using this approach, feedback controllers are computed by an iterative application of a numerical Galerkin-type PDE solver. Application of this approach to the design of a pitch-axis autopilot for a missile having uncertain pitch moment and lift force is described.

Active Local Volume Displacement Cancellation Of A Vibrating Baffled Beam, Marcellin Zahui Aug 1999

Active Local Volume Displacement Cancellation Of A Vibrating Baffled Beam, Marcellin Zahui

Dissertations

An active noise control apparatus is developed. The device reduces the sound radiated from a vibrating clamped beam. The attenuation of the sound field is obtained through minimization of local volume displacements of the vibrating beam. Two single-input/single-output cancellation devices are used. Each device employs a motion sensor and an acoustic actuator. The actuator is a loudspeaker equipped with a pressure sensor to detect its volume displacement. The motion sensor signal is related to the local volume displacement of the structure which is then reduced by a loudspeaker driven with an equal but opposing volume displacement. The volume displacement sensors …

Successive Galerkin Approximation Of The Isaacs Equation, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, John T. Wen Jul 1999

Successive Galerkin Approximation Of The Isaacs Equation, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, John T. Wen

Faculty Publications

The successive Galerkin approximation (SGA) algorithm has recently been developed for approximating solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation. The algorithm produces feedback control laws that are stabilizing on a well-defined region of state space. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application of the SGA algorithm to two simple examples. The examples serve several purposes: first they illustrate how the algorithm is applied in a setting that is simple enough to write out in detail, second they demonstrate the convergence of the algorithm in a setting where the actual solution can be derived analytically.

Adaptive Sampling For Coordinate Metrology, Robert Edgeworth, Robert G. Wilhelm Jul 1999

Adaptive Sampling For Coordinate Metrology, Robert Edgeworth, Robert G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

An iterative sampling process for dimensional measurement is presented. The strategy is based upon the use of surface normal measurement data to develop an interpolating curve between sample points. The interpolant is used to select subsequent measurement targets iteratively. The process is repeated until the measurement converges to a complete and accurate evaluation of the surface. The required sample size is proportional to part quality. The most accurate parts will require the least sample points; whereas, lower quality parts will require a greater number of total samples. The method is particularly applicable to measurement of complex surfaces with coordinate measuring …

Industrial Engineering Made Simple, Deena Daggett, Sema E. Alptekin Jun 1999

Industrial Engineering Made Simple, Deena Daggett, Sema E. Alptekin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Many high school students these days do not quickly recognize or identify Industrial Engineering (IE) procedures, practices, and products. Recruitment of qualified students into IE programs requires continuous planning, publicizing, and networking. Traditional recruitment efforts have included high school visits, brochures & flyers, and university-sponsored workshops. However, these techniques have only achieved mediocre success. Currently, a need exists for new promotional materials that utilize visual tools and provide a “hands-on” approach. We have developed several exercises that successfully introduce IE. Two such exercises are explained in this paper. The first exercise demonstrates the differences between Assembly line and Cellular Manufacturing …

Successive Galerkin Approximation Of A Nonlinear Optimal Attitude Control, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Johnathan Lawton Jun 1999

Successive Galerkin Approximation Of A Nonlinear Optimal Attitude Control, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Johnathan Lawton

Faculty Publications

This paper presents the application of the successive Galerkin approximation (SGA) to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation to obtain solutions of the optimal attitude control problem. Galerkin's method approximates the value function by a truncated Galerkin series expansion. To do so, a truncated Galerkin basis set is formed. A sufficient number of functions must be included in this Galerkin basis set in order to guarantee that the solution will be a stabilizing control. By increasing the size of the Galerkin basis the quality of the approximation is improved at the cost of rapid growth in the computation load of the SGA. A …
