Alum And Pacl Coagulation, Winarni Winarni
Makara Journal of Technology
Alum and PACl Coagulation. Coagulation occurs by interaction of aluminum hydrolysis products with the contaminant such as colloidal particles. It is necessary to consider the different aluminum species that may present during specific conditions, since the mechanism of turbidity removal is dependent upon them. PACl consists of preformed aluminum hydrolysis products, which are stable below pH 6 and less sensitive than in situ hydrolysis product, alum. The benefits of PACl relative to alum have been investigated as a function of pH and Al dosages. Specific conditions and aluminum species that exist during the certain mechanisms of coagulation are discussed. Results …
The Selection Of Materials For Roller Chains From The Perspective Of Manufacturing Process, Rahmat Saptono
The Selection Of Materials For Roller Chains From The Perspective Of Manufacturing Process, Rahmat Saptono
Makara Journal of Technology
The selection of materials for an engineering component is not only requested by its design function and shape, but also the sequence through which it is manufactured. The manufacturing operation of roller chains involves drawing and trimming processes aimed at producing semi-finished chain drives component with a well-standardized dimension. In addition to final combination of properties required by design constraints, the ability of materials to be formed into a desired shape and geometry without failure is also critical. The objective of materials selection should therefore involve additional attributes that are not typically accommodated by the standard procedure of materials selection. …

An Economic Analysis Of Variable Rate Technology, Isti Surjandari, Marvin T. Batte, Mario J. Miranda
Makara Journal of Technology
Variable Rate Technology (VRT) offers an opportunity to improve production efficiency by allowing input applications to fluctuate in response to spatial variations in soil characteristics and nutrient levels. Society may also benefit from reduced negative externalities, such as surface and groundwater contamination, from input applications. Using a dynamic spatial model, this study examines how the interaction among variability, spatial autocorrelation, and mean level of soil fertility affects optimal sampling density and the economic gains from VRT. VRT was found to be profitable under selected conditions, and the optimal grid size will vary with these conditions. In the case where variability …
Automated Casting Cleaning, Chris Anderson
Automated Casting Cleaning, Chris Anderson
Graduate Research Papers
The dilemma facing all foundries today is finding a cost effective, efficient, and safe manner in which to clean castings. At the same time produce a cleaned casting that meets consistent quality and delivery expectations. Today nearly 90% of all casting produced are cleaned by the use of manual labor via chipping an grinding. This manual method has proved to be very labor intensive, costly, lacking consistent quality, and carry high rates of injuries. The use of automation to clean castings is in its embryo stage in the foundry industry. The use of automation in the foundry industry, products currently …

Why Toyota And Honda Topped The 2002 J.D. Power Quality Study, Susan Lightle, Kenneth Yale Rosenzweig, John Talbott
Accounting Faculty Publications
Toyota again topped the annual J. D. Power and Associates quality study released in late May of 2002. Toyota scored the highest mark ever with l 07 defects per l 00 vehicles, while Honda came in second with 113 defects. The study was based on responses of approximately 65,000 new car owners queried during their first 90-days of ownership.
These results do not surprise us, as we have been fortunate to make numerous sojourns to the Toyota plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, and observe the manufacturing processes. These trips were normally facilitated by a former Japanese student of ours, Minako Yanke, …
Dynamic Modeling Of Compliant Constant-Force Compression Mechanisms, Cameron Boyle, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby, Mark S. Evans
Dynamic Modeling Of Compliant Constant-Force Compression Mechanisms, Cameron Boyle, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby, Mark S. Evans
Faculty Publications
A mathematical dynamic model is derived for compliant, constant-force compression-mechanisms, based on the pseudo-rigid-body model simplification of the device. The compliant constant-force compression mechanism (CFCM) is a slider mechanism incorporating large-deflection beams, which outputs near-constant-force across the range of its designed deflection. The equation of motion is successfully calibrated with empirical data from five separate mechanisms, comprising two basic configurations of CFCMs. The dynamic equation is derived from a generalized pseudo-rigid-body model. This allows every configuration to be represented by the same model, so a separate treatment is not required for each configuration. An unexpected dynamic trait of the constant-force …

Simulated Properties Of Kagomé And Tetragonal Truss Core Panels, S. Hyun, Anette M. Karlsson, S. Torquato, A. G. Evans
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The finite element method has been used to simulate the properties of panels with Kagomé and tetragonal cores under compressive and shear loading. The simulation has been performed for two different materials: a Cu-alloy with extensive strain hardening and an Al-alloy with minimal hardening. It is shown that the Kagomé core is more resistant to plastic buckling than the tetragonal core under both compression and shear. One consequence is that the Kagomé structure has the greater load capacity and a deferred susceptibility to softening. Another is that the Kagomé core is isotropic in shear: contrasting with the soft orientations exhibited …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The objective of the thesis is to study the effect of chemical kinetics and thermal hydraulics of Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) flow in the Materials Test Loop (MTL). The Materials Test Loop, also known as the Delta Loop, was built in Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL) to obtain the experimental data for corrosion estimation and analysis. It is a well-known fact that corrosion plays an important role in the design of nuclear thermal hydraulic systems. Since the MTL is a multi-section closed system that differs in diameter from one part to another, an intensive study on the overall and regional …
Design And Development Of A Lubrication Pump For A Horizontally Mounted Air-Conditioning Compressor., Kenneth T. Gilbert
Design And Development Of A Lubrication Pump For A Horizontally Mounted Air-Conditioning Compressor., Kenneth T. Gilbert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Horizontally mounted compressors offer the advantage of reduced height in central air-conditioning units but prove difficult to produce economically due to costs associated with the manufacture of acceptable lubrication systems for the compressors. This study develops an effective, affordable oil pump for use on a horizontal compressor. Concepts are proven through testing of prototype assemblies. Test results drive modifications for future prototypes, and prototypes demonstrating adequate performance are modified for ease of manufacture.
Research in this study proves that the most suitable design results from a modification of a rotating vane pump. The pump’s modifications enable it to pump oil …

Multiple Uav Cooperative Search Under Collision Avoidance And Limited Range Communication Constraints, Randal W. Beard, Timothy W. Mclain
Faculty Publications
This paper focuses on the problem of cooperatively searching, using a team of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), an area of interest that contains regions of opportunity and regions of potential hazard. The objective of the UAV team is to visit as many opportunities as possible, while avoiding as many hazards as possible. To enable cooperation, the UAVs are constrained to stay within communication range of one another. Collision avoidance is also required. Algorithms for team-optimal and individually-optimal/team-suboptimal solutions are developed and their computational complexity compared. Simulation results demonstrating the feasibility of the cooperative search algorithms are presented.

Evaluation Of Event Data Recorders In Real World Crashes And Full-Scale Crash Tests, Lewis Thomas Clayton Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
With the advent of advanced safety systems in U.S. passenger vehicles, there has been increased interest shown by automakers in recording crash related parameters that ultimately lead to the deployment of these safety systems in what are known as Event Data Recorders (EDRs). Since the only other record of these parameters, specifically crash pulse, comes from staged crash tests in a controlled environment, the advent of the EDR has become increasingly important to crash researchers. The purpose of this study is to quantify the performance of EDRs in full-scale crash tests and real world crashes.
Comparison of EDRs with staged …

Modeling The Transient Response Of A Thermosyphon, James Kirk Storey
Modeling The Transient Response Of A Thermosyphon, James Kirk Storey
Theses and Dissertations
Thermosyphon transient operation was numerically modeled. The numerical model presented in this work overcame the limitations of previous studies by including transient conduction in the vessel wall, shear stress between the rising vapor and the falling film in the thermosyphon, the influence of the mass in the liquid pool in the evaporator, and by using a more refined and accurate numerical grid. Unique to this model was the accounting for temporal changes in the effective length of the vapor space due to the expanding and contracting of non-condensable gases in the vapor space. The model assumed quasi-steady one-dimensional vapor flow, …

Riser Design For Green Sand And Ductile Iron Castings, K. Michael Kuebler
Graduate Research Papers
Shrinkage defects in ductile iron riser contacts has long been one of the most frustrating defects to eliminate for the foundry engineer. While process variation can definitively contribute to the occurrence of these defects most can be prevented if the risers are properly designed and/or applied to the castings to be fed. There are several proven methods for the designing risers some of which go back over 40 years ago. There are also new methods available today with the advancements of simulation software. Four of these riser design methods were evaluated for their ability to produce an internally sound casting …

Robust Pi Controller Design Satisfying Sensitivity And Uncertainty Specifications, O. Yaniv, Mark L. Nagurka
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper presents a control design method for determining proportional-integral-type controllers satisfying specifications on gain margin, phase margin, and an upper bound on the (complementary) sensitivity for a finite set of plants. The approach can be applied to plants that are stable or unstable, plants given by a model or measured data, and plants of any order, including plants with delays. The algorithm is efficient and fast, and as such can be used in near real-time to determine controller parameters (for online modification of the plant model including its uncertainty and/or the specifications). The method gives an optimal controller for …

Thermodynamic Determination Of The Cation Distribution In Nixmn1-Γ-Xfe2+Γo4 Ferrites, Qiangmin Wei, Brian W. Robertson
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
The cation distribution in the spinel ferrite system NixMn1-γ-xFe2+γO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and γ = 0.137) has been calculated analytically in complete form as a function of thermodynamic parameters. A generalized theoretical framework based on the O’Neill–Navrotsky model and Newton methods was used to solve a multicomponent system for up to 10 cation species. The relationship between the cation distribution and composition is given. The results are shown to agree with the available experimental results.

In the past, natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, tornados, and earthquakes, were one of our major concern. Now, terrorist events are becoming more common and more destructive. Whether, natural or man made, a disaster can happen at any time, often with little or no advance warning. A disaster can leave many people without adequate medical services, potable water, electrical service and communications for long periods of time. They can be as destructive as Hurricane Mitch leaving several hundred-thousand people homeless or as minor as an afternoon thunderstorm knocking down local power lines to your home. Not only can lives …

The Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc. (FGBC), developed a standard for green land development. It is the first voluntary, non-government standard of its kind to target an entire state. Other groups have created development standards that apply to just a local Home Building Associations (HBA) or a local jurisdiction. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is beginning a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEEDTM) for neighborhoods. To comply with Florida's standard, a developer has to earn sufficient points among six categories:
- Protect Ecosystems and Conserve Natural Resources: for example, surveys, conservation areas, wildlife corridors, wetland preservation and management
- Circulation: …

The Effects Of Nationality In The Intercultural Relationship In A Maquila Environment, Cultural Dimensions A Practical Approach, Daniel Martin Reynoso Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The Maquiladora Industry has enhanced economic development in the U.S. and Mexico border region. Initially, investors came to set up assembly lines requiring a small amount of technical skill; however, increases in the technological level of products have created the need for companies to require more technical expertise from their staff. Today, the requirement is for the design or redesign of some of their products and the manufacturing processes required to make these products. This brings managerial problems in dealing with technical people in cross cultural environments. These problems deal with staffing issues such as getting the right people and …
