Optical vortex beams with helical phase fronts have immense potential to enhance data capacity due to the unbounded values of orbital angular momentum. Chip-scale platforms for producing vortex beams are of paramount importance for a variety of applications. On the other hand, 2D materials with unique optical properties are essential for developing multifunctional ultrathin photonic devices. Here, anisotropic and temperature-tunable second-harmonic vortex beam generation is demonstrated with ultrathin ferroelectric niobium oxide dichloride (NbOCl2) fork holograms. The polarization-resolved Raman measurements are performed on the NbOCl2 crystal to understand the anisotropic behavior of the Raman modes. It is demonstrated …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The influence of grain size, irradiation temperature, and dose on the evolution of irradiation-induced defects in austenitic 304L stainless steel (SS) was systematically investigated. Coarse-grained (CG), ultrafine-grained (UFG), and nanocrystalline (NC) specimens were exposed to irradiation doses up to 10 displacements per atom (dpa) at room temperature (RT), 300°C, and 500°C. Dislocation loop size and density were quantitatively analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, and results showed that the dislocation loop size remained comparable across different grain sizes. However, loop density was strongly dependent on the grain size. The CG specimens exhibited the highest loop density due to a limited fraction …

Nonlinear Dynamics And Control Of An Autonomously Operated Towed System, Brian Allan Carr
Wayne State University Theses
Emergency towing vessels are a vital component of maritime safety. This study works to improve on previous works in the area of automating the towing of disabled ships. In doing so control methods for transient three degree of freedom dynamics of a tug and tow system which is connected with a finite element cable are evaluated. A Heaviside unit step function is inserted to void both the elastic and viscous interaction between the massive elements whenever the distance between two neighboring masses appears to be below the corresponding undeformed distance. This follows the representation of the cable as a one-dimensional …

The Design Of A Bioinspired Impact Mitigation System Towards The Prevention Of Brain Injuries, Bryce H. Reimer
Master’s Theses
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), including concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), remain a major concern across contact sports, military operations, and transportation. Despite advancements in protective equipment, current strategies often fall short in preventing the mechanical conditions that contribute to long-term neurological damage. This thesis presents the design and validation of a bioinspired impact mitigation system modeled after bighorn sheep horn structures, which have evolved to endure high-energy collisions without apparent brain injury.
Using biomimetic principles, the research integrates experimental and computational methods to evaluate how horn-like geometries reduce impact-induced accelerations. A custom drop tower was built to test dynamic …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The residual stress state in the sub-surface of machined components can significantly impact the properties and performance of parts, such as tribological properties, fatigue life, and dimensional distortion. The evolution of residual stresses depends on the selected process parameters and tool geometry, which affect the thermo-mechanical load imposed on the workpiece. The cutting-edge radius is among the most important factors influencing the resulting residual stresses. In this paper, a semi-analytical model for the determination of residual stresses after peripheral milling of Ti–6Al–4V is presented. It considers the physical principles of orthogonal machining, including the complex geometric and kinematic relationships during …

Identification Of Corrosion Damage, Vibration, And Loose Conections In Aircraft Data Transmission Lines Using Reflected And Transmitted Signals; Formulation Of Vegetable Oil-Based Nanofluids As Cutting Fluids For Mql Machining, Saidanvardzhon Valiev
Doctoral Dissertations
This research presents a novel Frequency Domain Transmitometry (FDT) method that uses transmitted signals (S21) to detect and characterize aircraft data transmission lines (ADTL) corrosion damage without additional reflectometry circuitry. Corrosion experiments were conducted according to ASTM G85-A5 over 14 weeks. Combined FDT and reflected signals (S11) analyses revealed distinct three-peak signatures associated with damage and corrosion. The square root of the Area Under the Curve (AUC) of the FDT damage peak and the Full Width at Three-Quarter Maximum (FW3QM) of the S11 damage peak is correlated with corrosion propagation depth and width. S11 signals were further used for vibration …
Process-Structure-Property Relationships In Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced 17-4 Ph Steel, Ben Brown
Process-Structure-Property Relationships In Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced 17-4 Ph Steel, Ben Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a metal additive manufacturing method that produces non-traditional microstructures as a result of the rapid solidification and thermal cycling inherent to the process. When using LPBF-produced material in application, these unique microstructures challenge the applicability of well-developed mechanical property databases achieved by conventional heat treatments. For wider adoption of this technology, a more holistic understanding is necessary on how process attributes develop material structure, which dictate mechanical properties. This dissertation explores the process structure-property relationships in LPBF 17-4 PH steel through systematic evaluation of atmospheric processing and heat treatment effects on microstructure and mechanical …

Effect Of Build Orientation On Tensile Properties And Fractography Of Additive Manufactured Inconel 718 Alloy, Ajay Kumar Maurya, Amit Kumar, Swarnambuj Suman
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The additive manufacturing (AM) technique “Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS)” is used to create 3D objects directly from 3D design data. A lightweight and complexity-free part without any expensive tooling can be fabricated easily using this method, but it is still challenging to achieve the desired mechanical strength from AM parts, as the mechanical properties of AM-produced parts vary with orientation, scan strategy, and process parameters. Inconel 718 alloy is most commonly utilized in the aerospace and automotive industries, because of its high resistance to corrosion and excellent mechanical qualities. This work presents a study to investigate the orientation-based mechanical …

Estimating Pedestrian Crossing Times At Scramble Crossings Via Machine Learning And Agent-Based Modeling, Sho Takami
Estimating Pedestrian Crossing Times At Scramble Crossings Via Machine Learning And Agent-Based Modeling, Sho Takami
CURE Proceedings
Scramble crosswalks differ from conventional crosswalks in their ability for pedestrians to cross diagonally. This research compares the average crossing times and investigates the walking behaviors that pedestrians adopt to produce the speediest times in the two crosswalk configurations. Identification of the most efficient set of walking behaviors is done through an agent-based model, whereas producing polynomials relating crossing times to the most prominent walking behaviors is done through regression algorithms in machine learning. With the combination of these two approaches, it is revealed that pedestrians must adopt a relaxed walking style to make each crosswalk configuration efficient. Additionally, between …
