The Problem Of The Anode Electrolyte In H-Type Electrolytic Cell For Electrochemical Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide, Rui Zhang, Wei-Xin Lv, Li-Xu Lei Feb 2017

The Problem Of The Anode Electrolyte In H-Type Electrolytic Cell For Electrochemical Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide, Rui Zhang, Wei-Xin Lv, Li-Xu Lei

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) was studied in the H-type electrolytic cell. It was found that the voltage between the cathode and the anode would increase during the long time electrolysis process, for this reason the electrolytic process would be unsustainable. After the experimental investigations carried out by constant potential electrolysis, constant current electrolysis, pH test and KHCO3 concentration analysis of anode electrolyte before and after the electrolysis, the increase in cell voltage might be caused by the following process: H+, that was generated from the anodic oxygen evolution reaction, reacted with HCO3 …

Application Of Adamantane Schiff Base Nickel Complexes/Graphene Oxide/Glassy Carbon Modified Electrode In Detection Of Carmine, Peng Guo, Zheng Liu, Hai-Ying Li, Li-Ming Ma

Journal of Electrochemistry

The Schiff base nickel complexes/graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrodes were prepared by embedded method and electrodeposition on which were used to quantitatively detect the contents of carmine. Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other methods were employed to characterize properties and morphologies of the modified electrodes. The results show that the adamantane double Schiff base nickel complexes/graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrode had high electric catalytic activity toward carmine oxidation reaction, and might provide an easy and quick way to detect carmine content with good reproducibility.

Preparation And Electrochemical Properties Of Attapulgite-Supported Nitrogen-Doped Carbon@Nico2O4Composites For Supercapacitors, Hui Wan, Zong-Rong Ying, Xin-Dong Liu, Jian-Jian Lu, Wen-Wen Zhang Feb 2017

Preparation And Electrochemical Properties Of Attapulgite-Supported Nitrogen-Doped Carbon@Nico2O4Composites For Supercapacitors, Hui Wan, Zong-Rong Ying, Xin-Dong Liu, Jian-Jian Lu, Wen-Wen Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, the attapulgite-supported nitrogen-doped carbon (ANC) was prepared by in-situ chemically polymerizing polyaniline coating upon attapulgite, followed by high temperature heat treatment, and then NiCo2O4was reacted onto the surface of ANC by a combination of hydrothermal reaction and calcination to synthesize ANC@NiCo2O4 composites. The chemical composition and morphology of the samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N2 adsorption/desorption. The electrochemical properties were evaluated by means of constant current charge discharge (GCD) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). …

Development Of Magnetorheological Elastomers (Mres) For Strength And Fatigue Resistance, J. Mcintyre, Stephen Jerrams Jan 2017

Development Of Magnetorheological Elastomers (Mres) For Strength And Fatigue Resistance, J. Mcintyre, Stephen Jerrams

Books/Book Chapters

Natural rubber (NR)-based magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) exhibiting a reasonable switching effect were fabricated and tested. They were strong enough for use in automotive applications but still needed protection against ageing. Ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (EPDM) is a cost-effective material that is frequently used in the automotive industry because of its advantageous range of properties. With these applications in mind, it was a logical progression to the development of EPDM-based MREs. Unlike strain-crystallising NR, EPDM requires reinforcement to render its tensile and fatigue strength suitable for use in most applications. While small amounts of carbon black were sufficient for the NR-based MREs, a …

A Fast Linear Electro-Optical Effect In A Non-Chiral Bent-Core Liquid Crystal, Yuri Panarin, S.P. Sreenilayam, J.K. Vij, A. Lehmann, C. Tschierske Jan 2017

A Fast Linear Electro-Optical Effect In A Non-Chiral Bent-Core Liquid Crystal, Yuri Panarin, S.P. Sreenilayam, J.K. Vij, A. Lehmann, C. Tschierske

Articles

We report the observation of an electro-optical effect for a linear rotation of the optical axis as function of the electric field in an achiral tilted bent-core liquid crystalline compound, in which 4-cyanoresorcinol bisbenzoate core is symmetrically terminated by long linear alkyl chains (n =16) on both ends. The linear electro-optic effect observed in this material is similar to the deformed helical ferroelectric liquid crystal (DHFLC) effect reported previously in a FLC material except that dimensions of the helical pitch differ by two orders of magnitude. In the chiral systems, the helical pitch usually lies on the scale of sub-optical …

Charge Transport In Electronic-Ionic Composites, Long Zhang Jan 2017

Charge Transport In Electronic-Ionic Composites, Long Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

The goal of this thesis is to generate fundamental understandings of charge transport behaviors of composites consisting of garnet structured Al substituted Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) electrolyte and LiCoO2 electrode. In order to take full advantage of all-solid-state batteries, bulk type composite electrodes should be introduced to increase energy and power density. However, the charge utilization of bulk type composite electrodes is quite low. Understanding ionic conduction behavior is, therefore, important for improving the performance of all-solid-state batteries, because ion conduction within solids depends on effective pathways. Electronic conductivity can be easily compensated by …

Acenes, Heteroacenes And Analogous Molecules For Organic Photovoltaic And Field Effect Transistor Applications, Devin B. Granger Jan 2017

Acenes, Heteroacenes And Analogous Molecules For Organic Photovoltaic And Field Effect Transistor Applications, Devin B. Granger

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons composed of benzenoid rings fused in a linear fashion comprise the class of compounds known as acenes. The structures containing three to six ring fusions are brightly colored and possess band gaps and charge transport efficiencies sufficient for semiconductor applications. These molecules have been investigated throughout the past several decades to assess their optoelectronic properties. The absorption, emission and charge transport properties of this series of molecules has been studied extensively to elucidate structure-property relationships. A wide variety of analogous molecules, incorporating heterocycles in place of benzenoid rings, demonstrate similar properties to the parent compounds and have …

Biomimetic Devices To Drive A Thermodynamically Uphill Reaction Using Light And To Degrade Industrial Waste Stream Components, Madison Joanne Sloan

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Given the amount of industrial waste produced each year, as well as the accruing amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere produced by the burning of fossil fuels, it is imperative that humanity develop environmentally-sustainable sources of energy and methods of remediation. Nature achieves both of these by use of enzymes as catalysts, inspiring interest in designing biomimetic systems capable of harnessing clean energy and remediating industrial waste. This study examined the ability of enzymes in electrochemical and convective flow systems to achieve these tasks. The first portion studied the incorporation of enzymes into an electrochemical system to drive the …

Deconvolving The Steps To Control Morphology, Composition, And Structure, In The Synthesis Of High-Aspect-Ratio Metal Oxide Nanomaterials, Lei Yu Jan 2017

Deconvolving The Steps To Control Morphology, Composition, And Structure, In The Synthesis Of High-Aspect-Ratio Metal Oxide Nanomaterials, Lei Yu

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Metal oxides are of interest not only because of their huge abundance but also for their many applications such as for electrocatalysts, gas sensors, diodes, solar cells and lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Nano-sized metal oxides are especially desirable since they have larger surface-to-volume ratios advantageous for catalytic properties, and can display size and shape confinement properties such as magnetism. Thus, it is very important to explore the synthetic methods for these materials. It is essential, therefore, to understand the reaction mechanisms to create these materials, both on the nanoscale, and in real-time, to have design control of materials with desired …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Enhanced Magnetic Properties Of Iron Carbide Nanomaterials, Brent M. Williams Jan 2017

Synthesis, Characterization, And Enhanced Magnetic Properties Of Iron Carbide Nanomaterials, Brent M. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Permanent magnets are classified as hard magnetic materials with the main purpose of generating flux for applications such as electric motors, turbines, and hard drives. High coercivity, magnetic remanence, and saturation values with high stability are some of the requirements for permanent magnets. Rare-earth magnets including neodymium and samarium based magnets are known to have superior magnetic properties due to their high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. However, due to the price of rare-earth materials development of alternate permanent magnets composed of inexpensive materials is an ongoing process. Previously cobalt carbide (CoxC) have shown promise as a potential rare-earth free magnet …
