Manure Disposal From Piggeries, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Many new piggeries have been built during the past year as more farmers swing over to intensive housing.

In most cases the problem of effluent disposal has been overlooked. This article shows how some pig raisers are beating the problem.

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre Jan 1966

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the problems of intensive houses for pigs is the disposal of the dung and urine.

If proper arrangements are not made to remove this, it soon accumulates in an offensive pile at one end of the piggery, making an excellent breeding ground for flies.

Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara Jan 1966

Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOOD is the major cost in any pig enterprise and it is particularly easy for waste to occur in the breeding herd.

Individual feeders enable the pigman to feed each sow according to her need, and enable the sows to eat their feed slowly or quickly as they choose.

This gradual development may eventually lead to his desired layout.

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins Jan 1966

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TERMITES are commonly but erroneously called "white ants."

Actually they are more nearly related to cockroaches than to ants, but their general appearance and subterranean habits have given strong support to the popular designation.

They may be divided into two major groups from an economic point of view, viz., wood-dwelling and earth-dwelling termites.

Mastitis : Modified Teat Cups Give Better Back-Flushing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1966

Mastitis : Modified Teat Cups Give Better Back-Flushing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Back-flushing of the teat cups has not brought the expected reduction in the spread of mastitis in some dairy herds.

Replacement of the conventional nut-and-tail nipple with a special flushing nipple, or use of a one-piece teat cup liner, will ensure that flushing is efficient.

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie Jan 1965

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY THINGS must be considered in planning a feed lot.

The site must be well chosen, fencing, gates and yards must be adequate for the cattle carried and feeding and watering facilities should be of a high standard.

Other things to consider are the provision of shelter and shade for the cattle and buildings for feed storage and other purposes.

Weed Control In Irrigation Channels, Geoffrey A. Pearce Jan 1965

Weed Control In Irrigation Channels, Geoffrey A. Pearce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Probably the major task involved in maintaining drainage and irrigation channels is the regular removal of weed growth.

The cost of hand chipping a standard head channel is approximately 10s. per chain.

The use of suitable chemicals could reduce this cost considerably.

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 1. Introduction, W J O Wilkie Jan 1965

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 1. Introduction, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

"LOT FEEDING" of cattle is the name given to the operation of bringing cattle in from pasture and giving them the total ration they are to receive in open or partly roofed yards.

The roof would be intended to protect the feed trough and not the cattle.

Sharpening And Care Of Mulesing Shears, A L. Jones Jan 1965

Sharpening And Care Of Mulesing Shears, A L. Jones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THIS year will probably see more sheep mulesed in Western Australia than ever before.

It is not surprising, therefore, that some improvements have been made to the standard mulesing shears.

New modified shears make mulesing easier —but they must be properly sharpened.

Good Facilities Help T.B. Testing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1965

Good Facilities Help T.B. Testing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Attack The Rabbit At Home : Destroy Warrens And Harbourage, J S. Crawford Jan 1964

Attack The Rabbit At Home : Destroy Warrens And Harbourage, J S. Crawford

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Effective rabbit destruction often calls for a carefully worked out control programme consisting of poisoning, fumigating and warren and harbourage destruction.

Possibly the most effective means of not only controlling rabbits but ultimately eradicating them from holdings is the destruction of warrens and harbourage.

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne Jan 1963

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FENCING is the basis of the regeneration programme on the eroded Ord River catchment area, and the fences constructed must cross numerous creeks.

But heavy downpours of short duration characterise the wet season experienced in this area.

Because the rain falls on to bare, compacted ground, run-off is intense and gullies and creeks rise rapidly, causing serious damage to conventional fences and flood gates across watercourses.

Back Flushing On Milking Machine Teat Cups, G W R Scott, K. Needham Jan 1963

Back Flushing On Milking Machine Teat Cups, G W R Scott, K. Needham

Well Designed Cattle Yards, W J O Wilkie Jan 1963

Well Designed Cattle Yards, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

GOOD yards are those in which cattle can be handled quietly, safely and efficiently.

The manner of handling is as important as the design of the yards.

Too much dog or whip can make cattle difficult, in even the best of yards.

Udder Preparation For Milking, W G. Robinson Jan 1963

Udder Preparation For Milking, W G. Robinson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

REGULAR routine methods of preparing the udder for milking hare long been recognised as essential for good "let down" of milk.

The biggest problem so far has been to combat the spread of disease, in particular mastitis from udder to udder by the milker's hands or the udder washing cloths.

The Effects Of Tillage Implements On Cereal Yields, H M. Fisher Jan 1962

The Effects Of Tillage Implements On Cereal Yields, H M. Fisher

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Careful soil preparation is essential for cereal crops grown without fallow on clover ley land.

Crops give better yields where the land is broken up with a mouldboard or disc plough rather than a scarifier or similar machine.

The implements differ appreciably in their capacity to control weed growth and this is largely responsible for variations in cereal yields. "Takeall" disease is reduced by efficient weed control.

Check Your Milking Machine, T Pavy Jan 1962

Check Your Milking Machine, T Pavy

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MILKING machine efficiency testing carried out by officers of the Department of Agriculture's Dairying Division have shown that many machines are not up to standard.

One reason for this is that farmers do not check their machines regularly.

Water Cooling Towers : For Cooling Milk On The Dairy Farm, K Needham Jan 1962

Water Cooling Towers : For Cooling Milk On The Dairy Farm, K Needham

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Experience on dairy farms where water cooling towers have been installed has shown that the quality and grading of milk and cream has been improved and maintained, particularly during the summer.

MOST defects in the quality of dairy produce can be attributed to the activity of micro-organisms which cause spoilage.
