Ground Improvement To Reduce Liquefaction Potential Using Vibrocompaction And Stone Columns, Sanjeev Kumar, Tim Holcomb, Shahram Pezeshk

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

With the rapid pace of industrialization, structures are being designed and constructed in the flood plains of major rivers. In earthquake prone areas, a fundamental issue in the design and construction of structures on saturated sandy soils is weather or not the design earthquake could initiate liquefaction in the form of lateral spreading, sand boils, settlement, or cracking. Many different methods, including vibrocompaction, deep dynamic compaction, compaction piles, geopiers, deep mixing, vibratory probes, displacement/compaction grout, etc., have been used to reduce the liquefaction potential at various sites. Use of vibrocompaction to densify cohesionless soil is becoming more common and cost …

Practical Seismic Design Considering Non-Linear Soil-Pile-Structure Interaction, Y. C. Han, Shin – Tower Wang May 2010

Practical Seismic Design Considering Non-Linear Soil-Pile-Structure Interaction, Y. C. Han, Shin – Tower Wang

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A substructure approach is proposed for the seismic analysis considering the soil-pile-structure interaction. Two software packages are available for practical applications, DYNAN program and SAP 2000 program. The nonlinearity of soil is considered approximately using a boundary zone model with non-reflective interface. The validation of model is confirmed with dynamic tests on piles in the field, and the results for a single pile are used to compare with the predictions in this study. The liquefaction for sand soil layer can be accounted for, and a case of liquefaction is discussed. The seismic response of a vacuum tower structure supported on …

Recent Advances In Predicting Earthquake-Induced Sliding Displacements Of Slopes, Ellen M. Rathje, George Antonakos May 2010

Recent Advances In Predicting Earthquake-Induced Sliding Displacements Of Slopes, Ellen M. Rathje, George Antonakos

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper summarizes recent research related to predicting earthquake-induced sliding displacements of earth slopes. Recently developed empirical models for the prediction of sliding displacements for shallow (rigid) failure surfaces are discussed, and comparisons of the different models demonstrate that including peak ground velocity, along with peak ground acceleration, reduces the median displacement prediction and the standard deviation of the prediction. Thus, peak velocity provides important information regarding the level of sliding displacement. A framework is developed such that the recently developed empirical displacement models for rigid sliding can be used for deeper, flexible failure surfaces, where the dynamic response of …

Seismic Response Of Columnar Reinforced Ground, C. Guney Olgun May 2010

Seismic Response Of Columnar Reinforced Ground, C. Guney Olgun

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Ground improvement using stiff columnar reinforcement, such as stone, jet-grout and soil-mix columns, is commonly used for mitigation of seismic damage in weak ground. Seismic shear stress reduction in the reinforced soil mass is often counted on for reducing liquefaction potential. Current design methods assume composite behavior of the reinforced soil, where the shear stress reduction is based on the ratio of the columnar stiffness relative to the soil as well as the area replacement ratio. This implicitly assumes that the stiff columns will deform in pure shear along with the surrounding soft soil. Three dimensional dynamic finite element analyses …

The Importance Of Creating Value In Seismic Design, Barnali Ghosh, Zygmunt Lubkowski, Jack Pappin May 2010

The Importance Of Creating Value In Seismic Design, Barnali Ghosh, Zygmunt Lubkowski, Jack Pappin

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Major earthquakes have resulted in devastating consequences in terms of human and economic loss. In almost all the earthquakes we observe the failure of structures, sometimes due to poor construction but also due to designers not identifying the specific geo-hazards (iIntensity of ground motion, faults, liquefaction, slopes etc) which affect these structures. In many cases these damages could have been avoided if the original design had correctly identified the geohazards at the site and incorporated the philosophy of performance based design. In this paper several examples will be presented where the different stages of risk assessment will be identified and …

The Role Of Soil And Site Conditions In The Vulnerability And Risk Assessment Of Lifelines And Infrastructures. The Case Of Thessaloniki (Greece)., Kyriazis Pitilakis, Anastasios Anastasiadis, Kalliopi Kakderi, Maria Alexoudi, Sotiris Argyroudis

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Soil conditions and site effects play an important role in the vulnerability assessment of lifelines and infrastructures under strong seismic excitation. Due to the spatial extent of these networks, they are subjected to non-uniform and incoherent ground motion as a result of the variability of soil and geological conditions; consequently their vulnerability assessment depends entirely on the variability of soil conditions and ground motion, known as site effects, for a given seismic scenario. Fragility functions for the exposed elements at risk, composing the different lifelines and infrastructure systems, play an equally important role. The paper presents some selected results of …

Soil Improvement Techniques For Mitigation Of Seismic Hazards - An Overview, Ram Prasad Sharma May 2010

Soil Improvement Techniques For Mitigation Of Seismic Hazards - An Overview, Ram Prasad Sharma

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

If seismic hazards are deemed to be unacceptably high because of poor soil conditions, it is often possible to achieve improved seismic performance through the use of one or more soil improvement techniques. Poor performance is the result of inadequate strength, low stiffness, or insufficient drainage. Many improvement techniques have been evolved over the years, mostly through trial and error, aimed at improving at least one of these properties. When selecting one or more mitigation methods, it is important to consider the effectiveness of the improvement approach for the particular situation at hand, cost, environmental consequences, regulatory requirements, and technical …

Threshold Shear Strain For Cyclic Degradation Of Three Clays, Kentaro Tabata, Mladen Vucetic May 2010

Threshold Shear Strain For Cyclic Degradation Of Three Clays, Kentaro Tabata, Mladen Vucetic

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Cyclic threshold shear strain, γt, is small cyclic shear strain amplitude above which soil properties significantly change with the number of cycles, N, and below which such changes are for all practical purposes negligible. To date, three cyclic threshold shear strains have been experimentally verified: for cyclic settlement (cyclic compression), for residual cyclic pore water pressure, and for cyclic stiffening. Subject of the paper is testing of fourth cyclic threshold shear strain for cyclic degradation, γtd. When fully saturated soil is subjected in undrained conditions to moderate or large cyclic strain-controlled loading, its secant shear modulus, …

Residual Strength Of Liquefied Sand: Laboratory Vs. Field Measurements, Julián Sandoval, Pedro De Alba, Thomas P. Ballestero, Barry K. Fussell May 2010

Residual Strength Of Liquefied Sand: Laboratory Vs. Field Measurements, Julián Sandoval, Pedro De Alba, Thomas P. Ballestero, Barry K. Fussell

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Determining the residual strength of liquefied sand is essential for estimating post-earthquake stability of vulnerable earth structures, or calculating runout of liquefaction flow slides. Current practice is to select values from a database of back-calculated residual strengths from failure case histories, which have been related to representative penetration test resistance numbers in the failed materials. Given the uncertainties involved, it is desirable to compare the field data with laboratory tests under controlled conditions. This paper describes residual strength measurements for a uniform fine sand using two recently-developed tests designed to impose large strains and strain rates: a modified triaxial test …

Large Scale Model Test For Pile-Supported Wharf In Liquefied Sand, Wen-Jong Chang, Jyh-Fang Chen, Hsing-Chuan Ho May 2010

Large Scale Model Test For Pile-Supported Wharf In Liquefied Sand, Wen-Jong Chang, Jyh-Fang Chen, Hsing-Chuan Ho

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Pile-supported wharf is a general option in port design to provide lateral resistance and bearing capacity under both static and dynamic loadings. In situ large-scale physical modeling using surface wave generator was performed to study the dynamic soil-structure interactions in pile-supported wharves and to serve as a prototype for in situ monitoring station. A wharf model consisting of 2 steel pipe piles welded on a steel slab was installed on a reconstituted underwater embankment. Due to screening of stress wave, the two piles are subjected to different loading conditions. Data reduction procedures were developed to analyze coupled shear strain-pore pressure …

Sphere Penetration Experiments In Vertically Vibrated Sand, Nicolas Denies, Jean Canou, Jean-Noël Roux, Alain Holeyman May 2010

Sphere Penetration Experiments In Vertically Vibrated Sand, Nicolas Denies, Jean Canou, Jean-Noël Roux, Alain Holeyman

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The paper concerns vibrodriving and vibrocompaction processes applied to granular soils and presents experiments able to characterize the behaviour of sand subjected to vertical vibration. Soil degradation phenomena arising during vibro-driving are first described and the vibro-fluidization of dry granular matter is discussed. The paper concentrates on the shear strength degradation of vibrated dry granular soils. Vertical vibration is then particularly investigated. The volume change during vertical vibration is described and the sand behaviour during vibration is also discussed. One focuses on the influence of the acceleration on the dry density after vibration. Finally, new sphere penetration experiments (SPE) based …

Multi-Modal Synthesis And Variable Modulus Effects In Resonant Column Tests By Random Excitations, Jeramy C. Ashlock, Ronald Y. S. Pak May 2010

Multi-Modal Synthesis And Variable Modulus Effects In Resonant Column Tests By Random Excitations, Jeramy C. Ashlock, Ronald Y. S. Pak

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

To extend current measurement and data synthesis techniques for resonant column testing, random vibration transfer functions measured using a modified 6 inch (152.4 mm) diameter Drnevich free-free resonant column device are evaluated against viscoelastic theories of homogeneous and heterogeneous soil models. By means of the transfer function approach, it is found that the first four resonant peaks of the soil column response can be captured experimentally with some instrumental adaptations. By calibration against theoretical transfer functions, the ability to characterize the modulus and damping properties of the soil samples over a broad range of frequencies is demonstrated. As a generalization …

Influence Of Densification Method On Some Aspects Of Undrained Silty Sand Behavior, Mehmet Murat Monkul, Jerry A. Yamamuro May 2010

Influence Of Densification Method On Some Aspects Of Undrained Silty Sand Behavior, Mehmet Murat Monkul, Jerry A. Yamamuro

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Different specimen preparation methods such as moist tamping, dry funnel deposition, slurry deposition, dry air pluviation have been reported in the literature to investigate the undrained behavior of silty sands. Similarly, different means have been used to densify the soils prepared with such methods. Ongoing research shows that the change in undrained behavior (e.g. change in initial peak deviator stress and instability angle) due to different deposition densities is significantly affected by the densification technique utilized within a particular deposition method. It is believed that those variations are closely related with changes in the initial soil fabric that is achieved …

Attenuation Of Traffic Induced Ground Borne Vibrations Due To Heavy Vehicles, Ozgur L. Ertugrul, Deniz Ulgen May 2010

Attenuation Of Traffic Induced Ground Borne Vibrations Due To Heavy Vehicles, Ozgur L. Ertugrul, Deniz Ulgen

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Traffic induced vibrations, which are transmitted through the ground, may interfere with the proper operation of vibration sensitive equipments and cause nuisance on local population. Influence of these vibrations on surrounding buildings and sensitive devices play an important role on acceptance of the projects. In this study, main objective is the estimation of ground-borne vibration levels due to operation of heavy vehicles at two different sites where soil type and stratification significantly differs. For this purpose, site specific vibration surveys are conducted. A series of dynamic finite element modeling analyses are performed to predict actual vibration records at measurement points. …

Dynamic Analysis Of Piles Under Lateral Harmonic Vibration, Mahmoud Ghazavi, Ahmad Dehghanpour May 2010

Dynamic Analysis Of Piles Under Lateral Harmonic Vibration, Mahmoud Ghazavi, Ahmad Dehghanpour

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presents a new mathematical approach for the analysis of harmonically vibrating horizontal, linear, elastic uniform pile. The soil properties may vary from layer to layer. No separation is allowed at the soil-pile interface. The pile is modeled as a number of cylindrical segments connected by rigid nodes. The length of each segment is chosen such that the effects of the soil inhomogenity are accounted for. The governing differential equation for an arbitrary pile segment is obtained and solved. According to the pile support types such as pinned, fixed and free conditions, first an arbitrary appropriate value for either …

Influence Of Dislocations On Bumps Occurrence In Deep Mines, Petr P. Prochazka May 2010

Influence Of Dislocations On Bumps Occurrence In Deep Mines, Petr P. Prochazka

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The problem of bumps occurrence in deep mines during longwall mining appears to be one of the most serious in the design of engineering of mining. They are caused for various reasons, but basically it is an aftermath of accumulated energy, which is released under some unfavorable conditions. In this paper the influence of given dislocations and their slope in a coal seam are studied based on free hexagon method. This method belongs to a set of discrete element methods and enables one to define and calculate stresses in natural way along the interfacial boundaries of adjacent particles (elements). Since …
